How pleased am I that anti.com is streaming the two new Tom Waits albums?
Answer: a lot.
Almost as much as the music, though, I'm intrigued by the cover art. Waits has always valued the art in which his work came packaged, but these two releases in particular make me miss the glory of a 12" record sleeve. I may buy them on vinyl just to hang on my wall.
Posted by jpoulos at April 30, 2002 04:29 PMI know Kaf's a huge fan. I don't know if you've heard them yet, but "Alice" at least sounds a bit more traditional than his recent stuff. It's hard to tell, though. After a couple of years, your ear adjusts and (despite the blurb on ANTI) it ceases to sound "strange and exotic". It just sounds sweet.
Posted by: jpoulos on April 30, 2002 04:35 PMI haven't gotten around to them yet.
I've actually had the Alice demos on cassette for over a year now.
From what I hear, Alice is reminiscent of Black Rider, and Blood Money more like Bone Machine. Both are taken from stage shows: Alice from "Alice" ... Blood Money from "Woyzeck".
I'm still not a raging computer music listener. Something about the stereo or the car does it more for me.
Posted by: kafkaesque on April 30, 2002 04:41 PMWho's this Tom Waits character? And does he have any songs I may have heard of?
Posted by: eyeballkid on April 30, 2002 05:13 PMYou know...that guy that writes Rod Stewart's songs.
Posted by: kafkaesque on April 30, 2002 05:33 PMTom Waits, isn't he the guy who did "Missing You" in the 80s?
