May 16, 2002 : My near-Uncle Neil Young

I didn't want to post this to the MetaFilter thread itself, but if anybody is reading or has read the Young biography under discussion, could you let me know if Carlotta Ferguson is mentioned? She's my aunt, and the family story is that she called my grandparents from California to let them know that everything was great, and she was living with this guy who played guitar in a band called Buffalo Springfield. As far as I know, they were together in the 1967 - 1969 time period, although family history is a little hazy on the details (oh, the scandal!)

Why don't you read it then yhbc? Too damn lazy?

Honestly, I am at best a fair-weather Neil Young fan. Granted I live in Southern California, so the weather is usually fair.

But it can get hot.

Let's say I listen to Neil Young only when the optimum temperature of 70-72 degrees is reached as a high temperature for the day for a minimum of three hours. In that circumstance I might make it through Cinnamon Girl, perhaps Powderfinger, though any sudden backsliding into the Corsby, Stills Nash and Young catalog would call for an immediate musical switch to something else.

Also, I might give Neil a go during hailstorms or natural disasters that can be safely categorized as Acts of God.

So we're not talking about a whole lot of play time here.

Lazy? Well - yeah.

The truth is that kafkaesque can only sneak in Neil Young between his secret marathon Eagles listening sessions.

Every Eagles listening session is a marathon Eagles listening session.

Amen.

TJ stole that "his voice sounds like someone whacking a bag full of cats" line from me. It was a phrase I used at work to keep me sane. My boss used to listen to a classic rock station, and when Neil Young came on, I needed an outlet that would keep me from grinding my teeth into powder. So I listened for the part of the song where I could insert some variation of "cats," "bags," and "whacking" in place of the actual lyrics. I know of no such remedy for the Eagles, however. Sorry Kafkaesque.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Phil Collins also sucks incontinent donkey ass. That is all.

And he has a giant head.

In fact he kind of looks like a life-size Phil Collins bobblehead, or one of those field-goal kicker toys where you had to hit the poor guy's head as hard as you could..What the hell were those things called?

I liked Heart of Gold...but I was young then.

I'm old enough to have been hooked by Buffalo Springfield's "Expecting to Fly". Then the "Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere" album became my favourite for years.

In those days I figured only Canadians(Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell)could be truly great and that Tim Buckley and Bob Dylan were just exceptions to the rule. Thirty years later I now know this was absolutely true. :)

I've been to Hollywood,
I've been to Redwood
I keep on smackin' on a bag of cats

...And Phil Collins looks like an orange on a toothpick.

It was a SUPER TOE, of course.

Thanks for all the help. I'll have to read the damn book after all.

grumble, grumble ... bag full of cats ...

I see the needle and the bag of cats
I start a-whackin' it with wiffle bats

Why not join in and say something too?

A note about posting images:
