Senegal stun defending champs 1-0 in Cup opener. Am I the only one here who cares? Please say no.
Posted by jpoulos at May 31, 2002 09:46 AMAfter just five minutes, Diouf shot down the right wing and squared for Fadiga whose weak effort from the edge of the box was easily collected by Fabien Barthez.
Sorry, J-man. To me, this sounds like a missing scene from Star Wars 2. But, I am happy if this makes you happy.
Posted by: ColdChef on May 31, 2002 10:56 AMSilence, Chef!
I was up at 4:30 to watch it, John.
GO SENEGAL!
I will be eating sleeping breathing, possibly even pooping the World Cup for the next month.
Now where's that coffee?
Posted by: kafkaesque on May 31, 2002 10:57 AMI'll be rooting for senegal like i was rooting for nigeria in 98.
i dig your point, chef, but imagine what a baseball play-by-play must sound like if you don't know the game:
"slider down and away. line shot in the gap. could be two. offerman to garciaparra. bobbles it. in time!"
Posted by: jpoulos on May 31, 2002 11:06 AMoh, and kafka, try not to poop the world cup. they hate that.
Posted by: jpoulos on May 31, 2002 11:07 AMso, chef, i received in the mail the other day a cardboard mailer, return-addressed to GJ Charlet III. the frickin' thing was open and empty. how pissed am i? some post office punk is boogeying his ass off at my expense!
Posted by: jpoulos on May 31, 2002 11:37 AM*cries for lack of cable television*
I am actually considering going to work around 5 a.m. to catch webcasts, if'n there are any.
Posted by: avogadro on May 31, 2002 12:10 PMAvo, I think your local Univision or Galavision should be showing both live games and a "game of the day" each night in primetime.
Check www.soccertv.com for all soccer telecasts in America.
Posted by: kafkaesque on May 31, 2002 12:19 PMYes, welcome back, ColdChef! Are you in Texas or Louisiana now? And, is your email address still bouncing expressions of thanks and good wishes? (My package was also open, but with contents) :)
Posted by: yhbc on May 31, 2002 12:45 PMAvo, I think your local Univision or Galavision should be showing both live games and a "game of the day" each night in primetime.
Shit yeah, thanks bug-man! I forgot about that; I recall watching previous World Cup matches on Univision!
/writes reminder to catch "Sabado Gigante"
Posted by: avogadro on May 31, 2002 01:08 PMEBK:
Thursday, September 5, 2002 at 8:30 PM EST, when San Francisco takes on the New York Giants.
However, the Gnational Football League (the "G" is silent) will be holding its player draft the weekend before Labor Day weekend, on Saturday, August 24, 2002, beginning precisely at 2:00 PM EST (after the ceremonial barbeque, and the Warseck Brothers Invitational Full-Contact Croquet Tournament), so that's when real football will start for me, at least.
Posted by: yhbc on May 31, 2002 09:00 PMI think it's a shame that people in the US mock soccer. I don't mind friends like you guys dissing it, but it angers me to see the guys on Baseball Tonight making fun of the World Cup on national television, because there's "not enough scoring". Well, it's not that kind of sport, chuckleheads. A 1-0 baseball game is a "pitchers' duel" but a 1-0 World Cup match is a yawner. Sure.
It makes American's look like asses to the rest of the world, something we already excel at as it is.
Too bad.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll continue to revel in the greatest sporting event in the entire world.
Posted by: kafkaesque on May 31, 2002 11:06 PMNobody's mocking football ("soccer"? What is that, anyway? Some American term?) here, Kafkaesque. Enjoy. Just be sure you get to bed early enough!
Posted by: yhbc on May 31, 2002 11:22 PMI apologize for the empty envelopes. As others can attest, it was a crappy cd, but a nice thought. I wish I had another and I'd send it to you, jpoulos.
The wedding is still months off, but I have a job now, so that's good.
I will not tell you, however, that I am living at home with the parents. That's just too embarrasing for me. Let's say that I'm with my family for an extended visit.
I've missed you sots. Hey, who offed Miguel?
Posted by: ColdChef on May 31, 2002 11:34 PMI didn't mean to sound bitter.
I'm sure it's the lack of sleep talking.
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 1, 2002 01:54 AMthere's on;y on e manlt low soring sport, and that's hockey.
Go Wings!
Posted by: tj on June 1, 2002 02:19 AMI like soccer and all.. but there's so much running... Maybe I need to spend time learning to appreciate this manlt low soring sport.
On the otter hand, it is nice for the rest of the world to have one global arena where they can consider the US as bush-leaguers.
Posted by: kokogiak on June 1, 2002 02:31 AMI'm bitter. Not about anything anyone said here, but it's friggin ridiculous that they get 26 minutes into sportscenter before they even mention the cup.
Gotta concur with my man K. It really just makes us (americans) look like assholes--not the fact that we don't get into the game, but that we feel compelled to make gratuitous smartass remarks about it at every turn. (9622.net, of course, was founded on smartass remarks. hence, it's all fair game within these hallowed halls.)
I wasn't pushing for another disc, cc. i'm just sorry it happened. and don't sweat the "visit" to your parents, most of us have been there. not *your* parents of course, although i'm sure they're wonderful people. tell them i said hi, won't you?
you'd really better catch some sleep, kaf. uruguay v. denmark starts in 2 1/2 hours. :-)
Posted by: jpoulos on June 1, 2002 02:32 AMI'll agree with k on the coolness of soccer. It's one of those sports (like hockey) that I never follow, but can't seem to change the channel when it's on.
BTW. Welcome Back ColdChef... and there were some gems on that cd, thank you. I can't get the Experimental Aircraft song out of my head.
Posted by: eyeballkid on June 1, 2002 03:35 AMCan I just take this opportunity to rub in the fact that The Large Phallic Cup Ball-Kicking Competition is happening in my backyard?
Can I further enrage you by admitting that I'm not actually going to any games?
Don't hate me because I'm beautiful...
Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on June 1, 2002 09:56 AMStav, I am jealous indeed, and wish I had taken in a few games in 94.
Stayed up last night, and fell asleep during Ireland/Cameroon, but woke up in time for Germany/Saudi Arabia. Damn, but the Germans look good. Their midfield absolutely controlled the game, what with their crisp passing and squashing of Saudi strikes. Nevermind all those headers too.
Posted by: avogadro on June 1, 2002 03:44 PMI made it from the beginning of France - Senegal to the end of Uruguay - Denmark with no sleep.
I feel a little crispy, but got a few hours last night, after the Uruguay game.
Taped the Germany game. That was like a ritual slaughter. That group'll be a competition to see how many goals each team can hang on Saudi.
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 1, 2002 05:32 PMI was supposed to be in Japan for this. I've got a friend teaching over there. But we had a falling out, and now i'm stuck with espn2.
i wish i were stavros right now.
Posted by: jpoulos on June 2, 2002 01:37 AMI sold Brazil vs. US tickets when the World Cup was here. Made some nice $$.
