After I sorta kinda got the go-ahead from John and Chris (are there any more admins? I didn't get the memo...) this morning (uh, my time : about 9 hours ago) to fire up my templatey skills, I've had about 11 cups of coffee.
Mmmm. Coffee.
I've also whacked together some html for your perusal. I'm far from a Real Coder or anything of the kind : I just like making stuff. I hope y'all like the stuff I made. I'm feeling a little bashful at the moment, to tell the truth.
But onward and forward : here's some detail on the design decisions I made... the sideways scrolling thing is a bit of a wank, I know, but I wanted to try it, and it's growing on me. Different, at least. All permalinks now go to flat pages where all comments can be seen in-line, not unlike our dear MetaMother. I hate pop-ups for comment threads. The #006699 is of course an homage to MeFi too, since that is from whence we sprang. I know some people hate the blue and grey colour schemes all over the place, but I kind of like 'em. It's not like they're written in stone, anyway. A little css-changer doo-dad would allow us to customize our colors : I could add one if you like.
The code is a mess - all the stylesheets are still inline to individual pages and stuff, and a bit messy. I just wanted to get some feedback on my work so far.
The layout seems to work flawlessly in IE 6 and Mozilla 1.0. I haven't tested Netscape, as it sucks donkey butt. There is an issue with Opera 6.0 and the z-indexes, but I'm too whacked out and caffeinated to figure out what it is right now. Also, things might be weird at low screen resolutions. Let me know...
Please let me know what you think. Keep in mind too that we can have multiple index pages with multiple different designs under MT, so other folks who can do better than I could make new ones too, of course.
So, without further ado (and please be gentle if you think it sucks - it's the first time I've done something like this for an audience) : have a look! I had tons of fun making it, anyway.
Posted by at June 08, 2002 05:43 AMCool monkey logo.
But side scrolling makes me dizzy. heh...
I'm intrigued by the side-scroll. I definitely think that we'd have to make sure there's no vertical scroll, if we go that route. i only want to scroll in one direction.
what if it scrolled in the opposite direction? that way, you could read it left to right, oldest to newest. or would we all then start receiving letter-bombs from jakob neilsen?
i'm also not married to #006699
all in all, though, this rocks.
thanks for doing this, stav.
BTW: the other admins are TJ & eyeballkid. Miguel has admin privs, but i don't think he wants them.
Posted by: jpoulos on June 8, 2002 10:17 AMHey that looks (if you'll pardon my french) bitchin. I miss TJ's monkey though :) Maybe we could have both.
Thanks for all the effort, Stav. I think, at the very least, you will achieve total consciousness on your deathbed.
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 8, 2002 04:30 PMI like the side scroll, if, for no other reason, it'd make Jacob Nielsen shit his kidneys in sheer frustration.
Also, I'll see Kafka's bitchn' and raise you a gnarly.
Posted by: dong resin on June 8, 2002 06:48 PMThanks, folks. It's morning again here in WorldCupLand, and the coffee's brewing.
Kaf, I've added the other wee monkey to the mix - you like? I'll prob be fiddling around all day, so if you have any ideas, please drop them here, or in the comments system at the mock-up.
You can also find me on MSN Messenger as 'boscopher AT hotmail.com'
Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on June 8, 2002 09:16 PMAlso, I'll see Kafka's bitchn' and raise you a gnarly.
It's tubular.
ante up, kaf and dong.
Posted by: jonmc on June 8, 2002 09:35 PMTubular eh?
I'd give it a definite "ginchy". With a side of "wicked".
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 8, 2002 10:27 PM...Hmmm....raise yer ginchy with a "bonaroo" and a soupcon of "stylin'"
Posted by: jonmc on June 9, 2002 12:23 AMY'know Stav, that sideways scroll bit - go with it (as long as it's the only way to scroll). I like mainly because it's different. I mean, why the Hell not?
Oh, and re: your DooLittle post on MeFi today. My hotmail address is debaser68@hotmail.com, so yeah - I can identify. I'd have posted on MeFi, but I've been busy, you know how it is.
Posted by: kokogiak on June 9, 2002 01:16 AMStav, I'll email you a larger and cleaner copy of the smoking monkey as soon as I find it... had to do a system recovery and I backed it up to CD so I have to find it first.
Posted by: tj on June 9, 2002 01:41 AMWhere's that!? I really didn't get the memo, honest!
Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on June 9, 2002 03:19 AMI'm also hagning out in #mefi chat too if you want to use turlyming's java client
Posted by: tj on June 9, 2002 03:37 AMLove the side scroll. The whole design is very pleasing, color-wise, and especially the way each entry is in its own little box; that makes it so much easier to separate visually. Nice job.
Posted by: Iconomy on June 9, 2002 09:44 AMIs there any way you can make it scroll diagonally? Other than that, I'll through my two cents in and declare it "tasty."
Posted by: MarsCrash on June 9, 2002 11:07 AMI just opened Netscape 6.2, it was difficult, but I swallowed the quick squirt of bile. The mockup looks perfect.
I have one minor problem. The navigation frame (the goods) gets cut off on my screen (1024x768). It's not bad that the posts themselves need some downward scrolling, but the navigation should probably be visible right on page load. Just a thought.
Otherwise, it's really cool. I like the vertical scroll. I was thinking of doing that the next time I redesigned my site. Now I have to think of something else (grumble grumble grumble).
Posted by: eyeballkid on June 9, 2002 02:07 PMyeah, stav and I were trying to work that out last night(this morning)
Posted by: tj on June 9, 2002 06:33 PMI'm glad folks seem to be pleased : tj, please feel free to mess around with the code as you see fit - I'm going to be out all day (my time : it's 10 am now), so go nuts.
(Even if we decided to cut over to the new tempate, we could still rebuild this page each time, and call it index_old.html or something...MT rocks that way.)
Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on June 9, 2002 09:16 PMthere's no need for it to have to scroll vertically, i think. each post could have its own scrollbar, right? or am i confused. i mean, i know i'm confused, but am i confused about *this*?
Posted by: jpoulos on June 9, 2002 10:15 PMthat jpoulos guy does have a point there. it is possible. we have the technology. we can individually scroll bar.
Posted by: eyeballkid on June 10, 2002 01:02 AMAdam, did you check out the reviews on that page? Or did you write them?
RAD - The Movie: 5 out of 5 stars.
*gibbers*
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 10, 2002 02:52 PMSo there is no end to stavrosthewonderchicken's talent! Can you hold a song as well, Master?
Posted by: Miguel on June 11, 2002 12:16 PMHeh. No, I didn't write them. I like the part where the twins are dancing with that one chick, and they do a high five to each other around her shimmying butt.

We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys
