Okay, so here's what I was thinking:
I really, really enjoyed the last CD swap. It was fun, and we got to peek inside of your musical collection. And while I won't say I loved them all...some of them have become regulars in my listening lineup.
Seeing that there seems to be some interest in another swap, I'd like to propose we give it a second go. However, this time, I'd like to suggest something different. Grab a coaster and follow me inside.
Posted by ColdChef at June 20, 2002 04:08 PMAs wonderful as the mixes were, I'd like to propose something a little different this time. What if everyone made a regional mix? Such as only songs from bands or singers in your immediate area?
I know, I know. That's what I did for my mix, and some people didn't care for that. BUT! I like discs with a "theme" to them. It's jarring to go from one extreme to another extreme.
Are you with me? Should I shut up?
*slurps on daiquri*
Posted by: ColdChef on June 20, 2002 04:08 PMThat may work for people in larger metro areas. Here (Salt Lake), there are a lot of bands who play live, but precious few who have anything recorded, in any format. At least, precious few of which I am aware.
Posted by: mr_crash_davis on June 20, 2002 04:15 PMbut ya got that kick ass choir, right?
okay. maybe I need to rethink this. what about just saying that cds should have a "theme?" you know:
"Miguel's Fav. Love Songs"
"Johnmc's Songs to Kick Ass To"
"Kafkaesque's Wiggity Waggity Wack Dope Beats and Shit"
*untwists top of Mountain Dew 20 oz.*
Hm. I am living in NJ. I don't know how Springsteen and Bon Jovi would feel being next to George Clinton. However, I am from Detroit, so I could offer up Ted Nugent and the Almighty Lumberjacks of Death (I am not making that one up) and Iggy Pop.
Posted by: adampsyche on June 20, 2002 04:29 PMWell, bang goes my title then.
I'd dig doing another swap. I thought it went quite well last time (apart from one welching participant who shall remain nameless). Themed CDs might be interesting, though the local thing would probably not work out for me. I could look through my collection for L.A. bands, I suppose, but to be honest I haven't dug the music scene here in the land of wigs and novelties all that much lately.
I think we need a list of everyone who's participating, so we can see if we do it like last time (which may have been a bit much for some of the more financially challenged...I think it was 7 CDs or something?), or come up with something else.
I think I've given my reasons before for not participating in the MeFi swap.
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 20, 2002 04:32 PMSo, are we (collective "we") talking about a non-meficentric CD swap, in addition to the one currently being run by Dreama over on the gray pages?
See, I have a lot of blank CDs, and access to free postage...
Posted by: mr_crash_davis on June 20, 2002 04:35 PMWe had one before, in the larval stages of 9622, before it spread its monkey wings.
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 20, 2002 04:37 PMAhem. 11629, you mean.
I understand if people don't like the "theme" thing. It was just a suggestion. Mine, will have a theme, though. Hell, I've already got half the songs chosen.
Posted by: ColdChef on June 20, 2002 04:43 PMOf course, I meant 11629. How could I be such a thoughtless fool?
In error and shamed
Kafka repents: wail loudly
to the skies, moron!
Chef, why be morose?
Here in your new monkey cage
You may play all day!
Here (Salt Lake), there are a lot of bands who play live, but precious few who have anything recorded, in any format.
Isn't Low from Salt Lake? Or are they just Mormon?
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 20, 2002 05:12 PMI was sitting all morose and quite sad
With the thoughts of fun times I once had
But my pal from the west
Who always knows best
Brought back all the joy, and I'm glad
*wipes tears*
He's...he's back!
Like the cleansing rain
Washing away years of filth
Cold Chef has returned!
One way or another, there's filth involved. I can tell you that much.
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 20, 2002 05:21 PMI have no idea who Low is, kafkaesque.
You may have just pinpointed the problem.
Posted by: mr_crash_davis on June 20, 2002 05:36 PMA little research turns up the official site of Low, who are from Duluth, MN.
Now I don't feel so bad for not knowing of them.
Posted by: mr_crash_davis on June 20, 2002 05:37 PMI only have their In The Fishtank with The Dirty Three anyway. Mopey shoegazing stuff, dig?
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 20, 2002 05:41 PMI must confess to a bit of subterfuge on my part. I suggested the cd swap after already having made a cd that I really enjoy that I'd like to share (I mentioned it to the other half and she's already bought me a coupla packages of jiffy envelopes.) I was considering offering it on my 'blog to the first ten people that made a comment on a particular entry, but I'd rather it go to people I know apperciate it. So I'm ready and raring to go already, I just don't want to participate in the MeFi swap because only two people sent cds to me the last time. At least here, there were hardly any flakes.
Posted by: eyeballkid on June 20, 2002 05:52 PMI'm up for it too. But the regional thing probably would not work for me right now. Evan Izer and I swap mixes a while back and that was pretty cool. He sent me all this prog stuff, I'm talking like Rick Wakeman in his Arthurian legend on ice phase.
Posted by: anathema on June 20, 2002 06:17 PMThere's nothing like a little Wakeman to hush the crowd.
Posted by: kafkaesque on June 20, 2002 06:21 PMOh goodie! As I lack the apparatus for burning CDs and I've exhausted my modest heritage as a track-picker, if it's all right with you guys I'll follow ColdChef's original idea - nothing his I wouldn't follow, except perhaps his cajun cum sazerac farts(that sounds filthy!) - and select a Portuguese record of distinction. There have been about seven in the last 900 years which are worth having.
After that, I'll get myself the equipment and, again following the Chef's advice, make thematic compilations. But I've still got seven CDs to swap. So, if you all agree, let's do it.
Don't leave me out in the cold!
Posted by: Miguel on June 20, 2002 08:30 PMi am also totally in. the computer to which i have access has no sound card, though, so i'm going to have to bitch and whine about live versions and misnamed mp3s a lot.
Posted by: pikachu lolita on June 20, 2002 09:29 PMYah, I think I'm in as well. Questions: regular audio (wav) or MP3, or both? I think regular is best. When's the due date? I'm fine with something generous like first week of August, if not before. Who's setting up the list?
I'm looking forward to some new tunes!
Posted by: ashbury on June 20, 2002 10:44 PMchristalmighty already, yeah I'm in on this one here too!!!
... bastards drank all the mai-tais ... never leave me anything ...
* pops another beer, pulls out list of skanky '80's local tunes and sharpens grease pencil *
Posted by: yhbc on June 20, 2002 11:21 PMI am officially, irreversibly, unfathomably obssessed with mix cds. none of you really know me, but that's the fun? maybe? i'm simply wary of trading with miguel. :) (You never sent that CD my way, Mister Cardoso, so I was forced to pick up some madredeus on my own.)
Posted by: Marquis on June 20, 2002 11:29 PMPikachu: I fear/look forward to a cd from you because I hate/love Eminem/Modest Mouse.
Posted by: eyeballkid on June 20, 2002 11:47 PMi'll have to find a particularly loverly eminem song, then. :D
Posted by: pikachu lolita on June 21, 2002 12:05 AMShit, Marquis - I forgot and that's the truth. Sorry, mate. I still have the two copies. I'll send you one along with the first CD in this new series - you can give it to someone you like.
*really hanging my head in shame here*
Posted by: Miguel on June 21, 2002 06:37 AMI know that the sight of my name in this thread will prompt some eyeballs to go up near some cranii, but while I was choosing my songs for the CD which went un burned (due to lack of aparattii) I decided to choose a musical theme. Sort of, I was kind of thinking 'bad ass women you don't listen too', but then I thought, hmmm... there aren't enough of them, perhaps: 'people who rock' and that was where I left my theme.
Now, I do not want the pressure of participating in the cd swap, as, obviously, I am no good at fulfilling obligations (see Buffyfilter.com), for I am all talk and no action. I thought though that all CDs were amazing, and all seemed 'themed' to me.
