June 21, 2002 : Not to change the subject from the important stuff like booze and music or anything, but ...

Fantasy Football Weekly's 2002 Annual Guide hit the mailboxes today. It got me thinking - as I'm going to soon start having to tinker with my own league (logo only at the moment, sorry), and as several of the league's owners have asked about having a fully on-line league (which is impractical for the real league, as some other owners aren't computer-literate or inclined), I was wondering if there'd be any interest in a 9622 league?

People have said these things about that :

I don't know commish, the evil foriengers here at 9622 are luring me away from American Football. I'm going to be up until about 6am this morning alternating between an RPG and Brazil v England and US v Germany.

I'm interested, but I've never played in a fantasy league before, it might take some hand holding. Plus, I'm a little out of touch with the NFL these days, having been disenchanted with the tumultuous tides of free-agency that have pretty much killed the reign of any love 'em or despise 'em dynasties (though I fucking hate the Rams. Hate. Hate. Hate.)

as MarsCrash can attest to, last yeat in the FF league I was in, I went by drafting the names that were most amusing to me... so I'd have to say I'm out, but he may be in....

USA! USA! USA!

Actually, the attributes you describe would make you ideal particpants, from the point of view of the other teams. Especially, EBK, if your Rams-hatred led you to pass on a chance to draft Marshall Faulk. You'd make at least one friend for life. Keep it in mind, though, and at some point I'll post my league's rules and some history to my (admittedly pathetic) webspace, so hand-holdees can get a better idea of what's involved.

Oh, and go USA!

Posted by: yhbc on June 21, 2002 08:12 AM

I'll definitely play, commish. But I do have to warn you that I won the MeFi league last year, like the stupendous badass that I think I am, but actually am not.

Besides, who wants to watch soccer anymore now that...Oh man I can't even say it.

*weeps*

Damn you. Damn you all for making me stay up until the sun came up to have my heart ripped from my chest. I knew this soccer thing would turn sour.

Hey, c'mon you guys - it turned out well. The U.S. team earned the respect of the world, and, just maybe, the interest of the home fans. All in all, an excellent result!

As to a fantasy league, great! I'll put up the rules, etc., when I can, so the fence-sitters can maybe see how easy (and enjoyable) it can be. The only hang in a fully online league would be that we'd probably have to set up a IRC room to actually do the draft, because it needs to be conducted in real time. I may need to press one of you into service to hold my hand through the set-up of that.

I wish you could say fuckin' kraut nazi bastards on the Internet, I do. But it would be wrong. ;)

Posted by: Miguel on June 21, 2002 11:40 PM

Yes, it would be wrong. Just as wrong as pointing out how every pair of German tourists, anywhere in the world, have synchronized watches and bus schedules to everywhere, but they still couldn't fit in anywhere they tried to go. And they would be named Hans and Fritz.

Good thing we don't profile or anything. ;)

Ah, the footie. Last acceptable bastion of nationalism...

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on June 22, 2002 02:12 AM

Nah, stavros, I think that way about Germans all the time. In a perfect world, it would be just as easy (and politically correct) to make jokes about the Germans as it is about the French.

Eh?

Posted by: yhbc on June 22, 2002 02:50 AM

It's OK - I dislike all nationalities in equal measure. I'm a bastard that way.

Spoken like one of the true
!

This place is starting to sound like The Blue Pages.

Now Senegal's out. WTF? Sorry, Miguel, but I can't root for Brazil. Look at Rivaldo. One of the greatest strikers in the world, and he's one of the biggest floppers in the game. All that diving, and not a swimming pool in sight.

I can't support Germany. I just can't. Despite the quality automobiles they produce.

Turkey? No thanks.

So I guess it's Korea. Go Korea! God, how weird does that sound? <whispers>go korea</w>

Posted by: jpoulos on June 22, 2002 06:46 PM

Daehan Minguk! Korea Fighting!

(like a broken record, me)

I coulda said "I like all nationalities in equal measure," too, but that would've gone against my well-cultivated hand-tooled misanthropy, now woouldn't it?

I'm harsh, yes, but fair.

Heh :

"EMBARRASSED BBC chiefs apologised last night after soccer pundits Alan Hansen and Ian Wright used the f-word on air after England's defeat.

Asked which match was next, thousands of viewers heard Hansen reply: "It's the f**king Krauts.""

Why not join in and say something too?
