The monkeys of Vietnam are endangered. Seeing as most of us will never get there, have a look here. Then forget about them. They're lunch for larger primates.

And the author of my first monkey book, Caps for Sale, has died.
I just feel like a vanishing monkey today.
Posted by: Eeksy-Peeksy on July 28, 2002 06:38 AMI didn't feel the article was wholly pessimistic, Eeksy. I also liked the North Vietnam slide show on the same page.

I can't remember what my first monkey book was, unfortunately. The first animal story I really enjoyed was Rudyard Kipling's "How The Leopard Changed His Spots", from Just So Stories, with his own illustrations.
Posted by: Miguel on July 28, 2002 07:04 AMI liked those stories, too, but I was The Cat that Walked by Himself.

I gave up Kipling when I was young, but returned to him later. He has some great stories ('Mrs Bathurst', etc.), though none, I think, about monkeys.
I owe you a birthday drink, by the way. Just stop in at the Golden Pub on ul. Grunwaldzka some evening.
(And if I had server sapace, I wouldn't link to people's pictures. Sorry, purists.)
Posted by: Eeksy-Peeksy on July 28, 2002 07:25 AMWe have to recruit some more people from the planetary arc from Europe---- >Japan.
The only people awake when I'm posting here under the influence are you two Europans, and not only are you afternooned and regrettably coherent when I'm just gearing up, you freak me out*!
*not really.
I can't ever be here under the influence -- either I'm home, where the connection is too slow (Polish telephone company) and smoking is banned by the woman, or at work, where they have a crazy policy against guys kicking back at their desks with beer and smokes. And I can't drink without smoking. So you only see the sober me. Which is probably good.
And Bridgie, I warned you: warm milk, teeth, bed, sleep, and church in the morning.
Say... I think I'll write a bad poem about warm milk, teeth, bed, sleep, and church in the morning.
OK, kids, I'm off to the pub. Don't wait up for me.
Posted by: Eeksy-Peeksy on July 28, 2002 08:19 AMwow, reading those words at 8 in the morning reminds me of dad.
Posted by: pikachu lolita on July 28, 2002 08:22 AM(so as not to sound too creepy, i must clarify that i mean the combination of the "go to bed" message and the "OK, kids, I'm off to the pub. Don't wait up for me" message.)
Posted by: pikachu lolita on July 28, 2002 08:28 AMNice link to the whole of Just So Stories, Eeksy, thanks. It reminded me the story was actually called "How The Leopard Got His Spots." Ah, the old memory is, with every passing hour, getting more and more stavroed. ;)
Posted by: Miguel on July 28, 2002 11:07 AMAh, I remember the Just So Stories. I think along with the Arabian Nights, they were just about my favorite.

Posted by: jonmc on July 28, 2002 06:26 PMHa! So now we're back to the cross dressing motif? I knew you had it in ya, jonmc.
Posted by: jpoulos on July 28, 2002 06:49 PMMy daughter has a video which has stories turned into cartoons, like Harold's Purple Crayon (or magic crayon, or something), and Caps For Sale. To date, she's watched it over 200 times, often back to back for days on end.
Let's just say that if I never hear, "Caps... Caps for Sale..." or "YOU MONKEYS! Give me back my caps!" again, it will be too soon.
With that said, how sad. :/
Posted by: Misty on July 29, 2002 12:03 AMI had a great Noddy story about elves stealing peoples hats on windy days.
Oh the trauma.
parp!parp!
Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 01:14 AMAh yes, Charles the lesser-known Gibson. Always standing in Mel's shadow.
Warning: Self Promotion Ahead!
Hey, by the way, if any monkeys are in San Diego January 15-February 15, I'm in a play at the Old Globe called Sky Girls.
I thought the movie sucked. The book - meh. I've read better.

Posted by: kaf on February 23, 2004 11:26 AMA note about posting images:
We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys
wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone
else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts
on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found
here. Thanks.
