July 29, 2002 : Music for Monkeys

Is today the day to send out the mixes? How are we all doing with that? I have not received any yet, but dogmatic reported getting a few in the mail. He brought his mix by this weekend, and I must say that it is thoroughly enjoyable. I will stop by Mailboxes Etc. at lunch and send my shipments of doom to all you Mojos.

Posted by adampsyche at July 29, 2002 10:14 AM

People have said these things about that :

I sent mine out last week. I feel so responsible. But, that money for postage was burning a whole in my pocket and Celine Dion remixes just don't get sent out on their own.

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 29, 2002 10:29 AM

mine will go out tomorrow. put a wrong song on and since i have to borrow my neighbor's burner, i can't do redo it until tonight. apologies to my little harem.

Posted by: witchstone on July 29, 2002 10:32 AM

I'll be sending mine out by Friday latest. And Marquis's Madredeus record too. ;)

Posted by: Miguel on July 29, 2002 10:32 AM

Matt: dogmatic (Ryan) got your mix, but I haven't yet. Maybe it will come today (just sayin', becuase we live in the same area.) I'll look out for it, though.

Posted by: adampsyche on July 29, 2002 10:36 AM

Sent mine last Thursday. How very exciting!

(Yours, Miguel, will be on its way later this week.)

Posted by: Marquis on July 29, 2002 10:44 AM

I'll be late sending mine out. I have no big excuse or anything. I'm just a lame-ass. I hope to get them out tomorrow.

Posted by: jpoulos on July 29, 2002 11:09 AM

Mine are going out today. I feel all burny.

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 12:56 PM

I'm a lame-ass too.

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 01:13 PM

Just sent mine. Your lives will never be the same.

Ok, it won't be that dramatic.

Posted by: adampsyche on July 29, 2002 01:24 PM

How is having another coaster going to change my life?

Ha! I kid, I kid.

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 01:28 PM

Also, could someone tell all these damn CD manufacturers to make all the CDs the same level? I can't tell you how many times I've burned CDs that require you to turn up the volume to hear one song, only to have the next one issue forth with earbleeding ferocity from your speakers.

The Chemical Brothers have a lot to answer for. Their damn CDs are loud as something really loud. Is.

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 01:29 PM

You are lucky enough not to be in my group, Kaf. But, my wife is a Tom Waits fan (and in your group), so you have nothing to worry about.

Could the volume variation have to do with the bitrate? As in, one song being 128kbps, and the next song being 256kbps? I know not of such things, but that is my best guess.

Posted by: adampsyche on July 29, 2002 01:33 PM

And Johnny Cash. She loves Johnny Cash, but I am not sure if he made it onto her mix or not.

Posted by: adampsyche on July 29, 2002 01:35 PM

I use CoolEdit to chop blank space, generally arse about with things, and try to get the levels at least similar. Would've linked it, but you can't get it free now. I paid for mine anyway: worth it for 50 dollar, when I bought it. Dunno about bitrate: haven't noticed this, but then I gen'rally have the volume turned up to excessive.

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 01:40 PM

I don't generally have problems with levels...

Though "Stars of Track and Field", off Belle & Sebastian's If You're Feeling Sinister is pretty darn quiet.

(Hooray! Some Tom Waits for me!)

Posted by: Marquis on July 29, 2002 01:43 PM

Well Tom and Johnny are both on mine.

Actually, mine ended up having a lot of stuff on it that some of you probably already have. But that's life.

You really never noticed the volume thing Walrus? I find it really annoying when I have 5 discs in the changer and one of them is really low, or one realy high. Tom Waits' Big Time is an example of a low CD, though that could be because it's live. But like I said, Dig Your Own Hole is really really loud.

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 01:45 PM

As much as she likes the stuff, I am not sure if she has much of it, so I am sure it will all be welcome.

Posted by: adampsyche on July 29, 2002 01:48 PM

I do the same things that walrus does with the free version of cool edit, a bargain at twice the price.

The Chemies are bad, but even worse if the whisper quiet music of pre-1987 cds, before they figured out how to master for digital.

Posted by: dong_resin on July 29, 2002 01:49 PM

Actually I might have noticed it on my Rio, but haven't plugged in for a while. I'm gonna have to check my levels again now, before I burn (8 CDs @ 16 speed = 40 minutes ... hurrah). Damn obsessives.

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 01:50 PM

"is the whisper quiet "

Posted by: dong_resin on July 29, 2002 01:50 PM

Sean, you may appreciate this: Best ever trade - I made a mix tape for someone in Germany and she sent me an original program from The Black Rider at the Thalia Theatre.

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 01:51 PM

& d_r ... I owe you a CD. I may even post it one day.

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 01:52 PM

BTW, if you burn with a normalizer such as the one in AudioCrusher. you can get pretty close volume levels, even without tweaking

Posted by: dong_resin on July 29, 2002 01:53 PM

Also, is it true that you shouldn't burn faster than 4x? Someone told me this, but they could have been wrong.

This is starting to sound like the old Playboy Advisor where people would write in with questions about their Hi-Fis.

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 01:54 PM

I look forward to it whenever it comes, walrus, as I suspect we have similar tastes.

Posted by: dong_resin on July 29, 2002 01:54 PM

I burn at 8X and 16X with no problems. Faster may result in a coaster for most people's systems. It's a memory thing.

Posted by: dong_resin on July 29, 2002 01:55 PM

I got ebk's mix this morning but I haven't listened to it yet. I can't put any music on until all the day-shift guys go home, 'cause they're all top-40 fans and will complain if they hear anything that ClearChannel hasn't approved.

Posted by: Crash on July 29, 2002 01:56 PM

Sean, you may appreciate this...

Oh wow.

Sometimes, the Internet's like magic. It makes amazing things happen.

(And regardless of having 'heard' music before, the wondrousness of a mix cd/tape has everything to do with a reconfiguring of one's experience with a song, a reinvention of it in another space & time, through another lens. It can transform previously ignored songs into breathtaking masterworks, or change silly piddle into nuanced tastes of brilliance. I very much look forward to your disc, K, as I do with everybody's [except SapphireBlue's, on MeFiSwap, who keeps threatening Hall & Oates].)

I burn at 8X, sans problèmes.

Posted by: Marquis on July 29, 2002 01:57 PM

I suspect we have similar tastes.

True enough, from listening to yours. I just have to recoup the track list from someone, cuz I didn't keep a copy when I re-flanged my PC.

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 01:59 PM

I don't understand, walrus, are you saying you need the tracks I sent you? You all got mildly different discs, so someone else's would be different. I probably still have your list, somewhere, if you do.
That disc I sent out last time was meant to be sort of a shameless crowd pleaser, by the way, I played it down the middle, sorta, because I ended giving out about 13 of them to all sorts of people.
If I were doing it again for this group, I'd probably go more esoteric.

Posted by: dong_resin on July 29, 2002 02:06 PM

Not everyone got LeAnne Rimes?

I feel so special!

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 02:08 PM

I just inhaled a half a bag of really cheap coffee brewed at 4X strength, but I think I've gotten away with it without anybody being able to tell from my smooth and unhurried posting style today.

I'm off to go read a couple dozen foreign dictionaries now, and then maybe I'll detail the neighbor's driveway with a toothbrush.

Posted by: dong_resin on July 29, 2002 02:11 PM

No, I mean I lost the list of tracks on my 11629 mix.

I'm esoteric by default. Crowds run in fear.
/tongueincheek

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 02:11 PM

That was the special nitzer ebb remix of LeAnne Rimes, Kafka, and I hope you appreicated it.

Posted by: dong_resin on July 29, 2002 02:12 PM

I burnt the original at 20x and the rest at 4x. The computer I built has the 20x, but has no second CD drive, so I had to go to the 4x burner to make copies (The Wife wouldn't have me sitting at that computer all night). Hope there's no problems, but I did listen to a copy all week in my car and had no problems.

Posted by: adampsyche on July 29, 2002 02:16 PM

If I send out all the CDs I got from dong resin, walrus, Lupo, Kaf, EBK and ColdChef, now that I'm sick and tired of them, would anybody know? Except Lupo, who was on my previous list?

Boy, think of how cool my group would think I was...

And that way I could probably afford sending Marquis his Madredeus before he dies! :)

Posted by: Miguel on July 29, 2002 02:31 PM

"now that I'm sick and tired of them"

Way to ingratiate yourself, Miguel. :) Are you aiming for a simultaneous MeTa/9622 pile-on?

But hey, whatever gets that Madredeus album into my mailbox...

Posted by: Marquis on July 29, 2002 02:33 PM

Go get a CD Burner, you lazy fabulously wealthy novelist, you.

What are they, like 100 bucks now?

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 02:33 PM

You can get one here for $65 CDN.

Posted by: Marquis on July 29, 2002 02:35 PM

that's only five bucks in real money! Crazy!

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 02:42 PM

Sending mine out tomorra.
(good things come to those who wait)

Posted by: Aw on July 29, 2002 02:55 PM

I received the Commish CDs (count 'em, two) on Saturday. Mine will go out tomorrow...I've been looking for an OS X driver for my burner...

Posted by: anathema on July 29, 2002 02:57 PM

Best wishes on your postage, folks. I just mailed a book and cd to Scotland and the postage was 11 bucks. I had six other packages to mail and all combined were about that price.

In case you were wondering, my music tastes are so weird I didn't want to inflict them on any of you. (don't worry-southern gospel is NOT on the list.)

Posted by: b****fire on July 29, 2002 03:03 PM

Hey can we make that monkey logo (up in the corner) into a link to the front page? I keep clicking on it regardless.

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 03:11 PM

Or maybe 'm drunk.

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 03:13 PM

(don't worry-southern gospel is NOT on the list.)

And why would southern gospel be a bad thing?

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 29, 2002 03:22 PM

Master Walrus, as a philatelist drools over upcoming first issues, I wonder what original covers you prepared for this latest release. I figure the Formula 1 motif has been superceded and yet find myself stymied about its replacement. Any hints?

Posted by: Miguel on July 29, 2002 03:29 PM

mine will go out tomorrow, hopefully. i have to wait till my family goes away so they don't see me stealing all their precious stamps. ah, the pleasures of being back home.

Posted by: pikachu lolita on July 29, 2002 03:32 PM

Because I can't stand southern gospel.

Sounds like barbershop quartet stuff. No soul. Ick.

Now the soundtrack from "O Brother Where Art Thou" rocks.

Posted by: b****fire on July 29, 2002 03:40 PM

Now the soundtrack from "O Brother Where Art Thou" rocks.

Be sure to look up The Boggs and The Be Good Tanyas, for a bigger gulp of indie-chic bluegrass.

I figure the Formula 1 motif has been superceded and yet find myself stymied about its replacement. Any hints?

That was only yours. Everybody else got other carefully selected trash. I had half decided to print out a cover this time, but now you're making me feel maudlin.

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 03:43 PM

Btw, 11629, the thread where us monkey-lovers planned our first swap, has just been closed forever on MetaFilter. Along with, of course, 9622 and 1142.Eyeballkid noted the occasion with a great post!

Posted by: Miguel on July 29, 2002 03:44 PM

Now the soundtrack from "O Brother Where Art Thou" rocks.
Email me your address, I think you'll like my mix.

Posted by: ColdChef on July 29, 2002 03:45 PM

In other news, Matt commented: "(...)I appreciate the additional sense of community and commradire that the cult threads brought to the site(...)". I've omitted the usual "drain on resources" bits for exhortatory purposed.

And that rascal Commish actually link-gloated about having the last word on 9622. And to think, dude, I was the one who ushered him in.
[There's something wrong with the placement of that "dude", isn't there?]

Posted by: Miguel on July 29, 2002 03:50 PM

Though comradire makes me think of a dire sort of friendship.

Posted by: Miguel on July 29, 2002 03:51 PM

Bunny, there's no way mailing a CD to Europe costs 11$. I think the book bears most of the guilt, and the weight.

I have to say I don't care if I don't hear the O Brother soundtrack for a long while. I like the music, but that is not all the bluegrass music there is. I had a neighbor who would blast Man of Constant Sorrow ad infinitum, and then skip through the rest of the CD. ugh.

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 03:54 PM

And that rascal Commish actually link-gloated about having the last word on 9622. And to think, dude, I was the one who ushered him in.
I still regret ever asking Miguel to join us.

Posted by: walrus on July 29, 2002 03:58 PM

And I'll never forget it, ColdChef. But let us not forget a much more important point - the first monkey-lover to post on thread 9622, by a long shot, was Marquis. And yet his Madredeus CD, despite all the bally-hoo and constant pledges, is still pointedly not in the mail. So ask me - go ahead - whether life is unjust or not. ;)

Posted by: Miguel on July 29, 2002 04:07 PM

But alas! It was tj who first used the word "monkey" in 9622.

Posted by: adampsyche on July 29, 2002 04:12 PM

Man, I bet we're beating the fuck out of that new server today.

Posted by: ColdChef on July 29, 2002 04:18 PM

I just have to say that I regularly ship stuff global priority to Glasgow Scotland, sometimes up to 6 cds at a go, for a big 5 bucks a hit.

Posted by: dong_resin on July 29, 2002 04:25 PM

Uh, Kafka, why didn't you TELL me you lived next door?

Posted by: b****fire on July 29, 2002 04:37 PM

Mailing a cd to Turkey was just 4 bucks.

Posted by: b****fire on July 29, 2002 04:40 PM

EBK: got the CD today. Very nicely packaged. Can the music live up to the hype? ;-)

Posted by: adampsyche on July 29, 2002 05:53 PM

no adam, it doesn't, but with the right center implement, it makes a great top.

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 29, 2002 06:18 PM

5 bucks a hit? damn, that shit must be good... oh, you were talking about cd's.

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 29, 2002 06:19 PM

Remember up there somewhere when I said my CDs were going out today? Well, I may have been premature in my ETA vis-a-vis the CDs, seeing as how it's now 3:42 and I haven't gotten the envelopes yet.

But tomorrow, for sure!

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 29, 2002 06:42 PM

Granted, Adam - tj first used the word monkey and that's probably the seminal moment. But the monkey beauty started here, with kokogiac kicking off.

Posted by: Miguel on July 29, 2002 06:45 PM

not to be a stickler, but I was also the first to post on the motherthread (look up about 5 post from Marquis' post)

I will have my props

Posted by: tj on July 29, 2002 07:32 PM

Yo! - two points:

1. It wasn't a "link-gloat", Migs - I was actually ineffably saddened by realizing I was the last post. It's the "I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy" syndrome coming out in me.

2. Anybody else get my CDs? (Miguel, yours will be a tad late.) Others, what'd you think?

Posted by: yhbc on July 29, 2002 07:34 PM

Old eagle-eye apologizes: all due props to tj, with interest.

Mahalia Jackson makes me believe in God, four minutes at a time.

Posted by: jpoulos on July 30, 2002 12:13 AM

My Cd's and Marty's will probably be going out on Saturday. The burner is making fine coasters right now and I have to fix it tonight.

Posted by: tj on July 30, 2002 08:47 AM

Oh the guilt and the joy! I've just this moment been handed a massive cardboard box from the Commissioner's Office with not one, but two spanking CDs. I loved that he wrote, beneath his address, "yhbc" and sent a personal note.

Way to go, dude! I wanted to thank you before I actually listen to the damn things, in case I regret it later. ;)

No - thanks a lot for bringing the goods to Lisbon, Commish!

Posted by: Miguel on July 30, 2002 10:18 AM

Got mine Saturday, Commish. I plan to listen to them this afternoon, but the tracklists look great.

Posted by: jpoulos on July 30, 2002 11:06 AM

OK! Mine went out this morning.

Posted by: kafkaesque on July 30, 2002 11:27 AM

Despite NUMEROUS setbacks to my cdburning abilities (long story, involves the near striking of a Circuit City employee with a wooden Office Solutions display), I am back on track and starting to burn tonight.

Soon, my precious. Soon.

Posted by: ColdChef on July 30, 2002 11:51 AM

the tracklist looks great

Heh. I have a friend, Chico, who only reads tracklists (very closely) says "Wow! Fabulous!" and then puts the CD down. If pressed to actually listen to the thing, he resents it and mumbles something about not having to listen to it to see how good it is.

He works for a record company, natch.

Posted by: Miguel on July 30, 2002 12:16 PM

Well, of course.
They've been listening with their eyes for years.

Posted by: dong_resin on July 30, 2002 12:29 PM

Mahalia Jackson sings black gospel, which is marvelous and incredible. What I was referring to is a quartet of good old boys in suits, four part harmony, sweating up a storm.

I would quote you song lyrics but knowing how that would go over here I will refrain.

hey, adam & dogmaticMe

are you both coming to the mefi thingey on tuesday? and if so, should we just exchange the CD's then and save ourselves the postage? or would we rather get them in the mail?

Posted by: witchstone on July 31, 2002 03:57 PM

Ya know, I was going to ask about that, but I went ahead and sent it anyhow. If you want to just give it to me then, that is fine.

Posted by: adampsyche on July 31, 2002 04:00 PM

i'll send it, just in case something comes up. you know, like i'm too drunk to get on the subway or something.

bastards. I am seething with jealousy. Take pictures.

Posted by: ColdChef on July 31, 2002 04:10 PM

Well, it's always a nice surprise to have something show up in the afternoon mail. I am listening to dogmaticMe's mix right now, fresh out of the mailman's twitchy gun hand.

Scratch that, I was listening to it. Track two is a little...raw, shall we say. At least for easily offended (read: Mormon) coworkers.

I'll put it back on when the last one leaves. Heh.

thx, kafkaesque -- i actually received your cd yesterday, but have not yet had a chance to listen to it, due to general out and about drunken debauchery. however, it is the first thing i will throw into my cd player for the pilgrimage to sacramento.

as for not liking track #7, well, i can't believe you disliked the only track on that album that F"N RAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWKKKKKKKKXXXXXX.
