August 06, 2002 : Sad Little Man

I wish I was at a MeFi meetup instead of hanging with you losers.

No offense.

Posted by ColdChef at August 06, 2002 08:08 PM

People have said these things about that :

I bet they have pie.

Posted by: ColdChef on August 6, 2002 08:09 PM

I see they left a mess here....

Posted by: b****fire on August 6, 2002 08:10 PM

I did my best to stop them, but...well, they were pushing me around and calling me "square."

Posted by: ColdChef on August 6, 2002 08:11 PM

Meetups are so old server.

Posted by: anathema on August 6, 2002 08:13 PM

I am obviously very, very jealous.

Posted by: anathema on August 6, 2002 08:19 PM

Are they there yet? Are they enjoying themselves? What were they wearing? Oh, I bet they're having fun, coz that's the kinda guys and gals they are! My heroes!

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 08:23 PM

I wouldn't know. They seem to dislike monkeys far too much to be any fun at parties, though. I'm not really a computer guy, so it's hard for me to say. As a matter of fact, I can't believe I'm using the computer while TJ's at my parents house. He's usually afraid that he'll have to take me to the hospital to get the "W" key surgically removed from my ear. Again.

Posted by: MarsCrash on August 6, 2002 08:29 PM

We don't need them to have fun!

Who knows some ghost stories? I'll dim the lights.

Posted by: ColdChef on August 6, 2002 08:30 PM

Seriously, there is no way in the world I would have ever gone to one of those mefi meetups. wouldn't be prudent.

Posted by: b****fire on August 6, 2002 08:32 PM

Well, I just phoned Kaf. It's funny how nervous and littleboyish you can get when you're about to talk to someone you don't know in the flesh but feel is a friend. Anyway, typically perhaps, the Master was unavailable so I had to leave a message, a very muddled message.

He's probably enjoying himself with Eyeballkid (I pronounce his nick Ennn-v-ee, btw) and down-and-out Optamystic even as we bathetically speak...

I might not go to bed and try again, like those stalker fellows, in an hour or two.

If you're reading, Kaf - excuse my shyness and befuddled syntax. I'm going to listen to Hune 1976 Lenny now. :)

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 08:49 PM

Hune bugs!

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 08:50 PM

i really hate those bastards that are having fun, too. damn them! if only there were a lot of mefites in portland. then i could be happy.

miguel, just a heads-up, i'm not sure when they were starting their festivities in LA, but it's only 6pm in that timezone. they may be meeting up a little later.

of course, i have no clue when they're meeting up, as i don't get to go.

*cries alone*

Posted by: pikachu lolita on August 6, 2002 09:06 PM

P-Lo: I'm monkey enough to hit the streets pleading "Please, sir, would you help us 9622 outcasts save up for the fare to LA?"

Aw, it's sad, it is. Well not Aw. Aw and Adam are living it up in Manhattan as we speak.

Oh sob!

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 09:09 PM

the annoying thing is, if i had left this morning, i could easily have driven down to LA or something. it would have been ridiculous, but i've driven to LA by myself before and i'm sure i could do it again.

of course, then i'd be stuck in LA, drunk and tired. boo!

Posted by: pikachu lolita on August 6, 2002 09:11 PM

I tried calling the birthday girl. No answer. Is it possible she's passed out already?

Posted by: ColdChef on August 6, 2002 09:12 PM

Et goneill brutus too, huh?

P-Lo, ColdChef and any other sad loser feeling lonely and left out: Next year, this time, somewhere in the middle? Say New Orleans?

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 09:17 PM

Naw, stop your weepin'. Most of the people at the meetups are probably bores, whiners and lurkers. The coolest people are in crazier places: Korea. Canada. Portugal. Louisiana.

I mean, seriously, those are so much groovier than, uh, Washington DC, LA or NYC.

Posted by: Marquis on August 6, 2002 09:19 PM

Still, Marquis, tonight us meerkats are gazing, precisely and respectively, at New York, Washington and Los Angeles and going "Whoozat there? Is dat witchy? Dat jonmc? Dat Adam? Can't be Evanizer, can it? Kaf been in yet? Optamystic barfed on anyone's shoes? EBK still sober? Sheeet, has RomaKimmy flown in?" ;)

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 09:24 PM

bwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

oh, miguel. :) dudes, there should so be a big drunken 9622 meetup. it would be a huge pain in the ass to coordinate, but i for one would be too drunk to notice.

Posted by: pikachu lolita on August 6, 2002 09:33 PM

New Orleans. That's what I'm talkin' about.

Posted by: ColdChef on August 6, 2002 09:33 PM

Well, we're free and nobody can stop us planning it. I've always wanted to see New Orleans. Perhaps a drink can be had there as well. So why don't we committ now? Hell, we have a year to prepare. And (this is for you, Bridgie) many Sazeracs to cross...

*feeling happier already*

[OK, I admit Marquis helped.]

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 09:38 PM

I mean...if you're gonna give out your number, answer your friggin' phone!

Posted by: ColdChef on August 6, 2002 09:39 PM

I like calling North Carolina home.
Hooah!

Posted by: b****fire on August 6, 2002 09:39 PM

I think I'll just rent a bus for about 6 months, paint a big monkey on the side, and tour the continent, picking up 9622'ers along the way.

(But only we're allowed. none of these Meetup People.)

Roll up
Roll up for the Mystery Tour

Posted by: jpoulos on August 6, 2002 09:39 PM

Perhaps a drink can be had there as well.

Yes, in fact. New Orleans has recently lifted Prohibition. We're in luck!

Posted by: jpoulos on August 6, 2002 09:41 PM

À propos of nothing: there's this well known Spanish brandy called Soberano and for years I'd wondered why all the drunken tourists who drank it kept chuckling. Then it dawned on me: Sober-ano.

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 09:41 PM

Unremovable image of Lupo cruising for 9622'ers, picking and liquoring us up on his way to New Orleans:

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 09:47 PM

For the record, I never barfed on anyone's shoes. (Hopefully, I'll rectify that omission tonight).

Ya'll will be sorely missed. We'll be sure to raise a glass or ten in toast to absent friends.

Posted by: Optamystic on August 6, 2002 09:59 PM

I wish I wasn't so poor. And Canadian. 'Nawlins is mighty far away.

A road trip I could handle. A flight - eek.

We -should- set up a 9622 chat, however, to facilitate late-night grumblefests such as this one.

Posted by: Marquis on August 6, 2002 10:00 PM

(Oh, and I don't remember if anyone here cared, but I got my press copy of Hem's Rabbit Songs in the mail today, finally. The packaging is ooh-er, so if you like them, I'd nod my head approvingly at the purchase.)

Posted by: Marquis on August 6, 2002 10:01 PM

Good evening, fellow lose...er...ers...er, nevermind! Hey, I bet they're not really having a great time, awash in cocktails and witty repartee! I bet they WISH they could be here, on 9622, right, uh... now ...
*sobs*
*swigs bourbon*
I'll be outside waiting for jpoulos' bus if ya need me.

Posted by: tizzie on August 6, 2002 10:04 PM

[offtopic]
does that monkey's tag (above) really say:
"push dice cup up
and I shoot crap"?

I vote for this monkey as the 9622 mascot:
9622 - Flinging poo and shooting crap
[/offtopic]

Sorry. I'm childish. It makes me laugh.

Posted by: scribblative on August 6, 2002 10:12 PM

Done.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 6, 2002 10:21 PM

Optamystic was the only one with the compassion and the sheer humanity to check in and console us.

*pins whole girl guide on Opta's lapel, scribbling out the prepared in Be Prepared and replacing it with gentle.

And yet...and yet the in crowd is arriving and tomorrow, when the Gatsby mob wake up, all they'll have will be a hangover, whereas we'll have a...even worse hangover.

But this thread too!

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 10:21 PM

Wow - Lupo really did change our motto! *fawns*

Scribblative - you have 20/20 vision and that vision thing too!

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 10:26 PM

Well, if anyone wants to join me, I will be sitting alone, drinking Jack Daniels, in #tangmonkey , at:

"I wish I was at a MeFi meetup instead of hanging with you losers."

Bite me, loser.

No offense.

*flings a huge handful of green poo*

Posted by: Crash on August 6, 2002 10:55 PM

Hi, Crash. I just got back from a crappy meeting. With any luck, tomorrow I will have a local newspaper story to post on my own damn blog about it. For now, though, I have an hour left to drink Keystone (Ice, not the Light).

So, how was your day?

Posted by: yhbc on August 6, 2002 10:58 PM

My day rocked. The big boss flew in from CA, let us all off early and took us to dinner at the Ruby River Steakhouse.

Three pints of Ruby Red Ale made it go down smoothly, too.

Posted by: Crash on August 6, 2002 11:08 PM

I missed the Dallas meetup too. I'd planned on going, but after a day smelling glue fumes from having huge amounts of my hardwood floors replaced today, I just couldn't even face the concept of traffic. I've been randomly napping and bitching all evening...figured I'd spare people. :)

Posted by: dejah420 on August 6, 2002 11:17 PM

(Waves a hand to everyone, gesturing towards the archaic and puerile IRC address noted above. Miguel and Marquis are already sipping juleps by the ASCII beach...)

Posted by: Marquis on August 6, 2002 11:20 PM

mmmm. Steak Soup and a Garlic Mushroom Swiss Burger, please. I feel better already.

(anything's better with garlic - throw on mushrooms and swiss cheese - well, heck, that's just extra!)

Posted by: yhbc on August 6, 2002 11:21 PM

* sniff *

But at work, I don't have 9622.

At home, I don't have IRC.

I'll just stay here, drinking beer.

(Yeah, I'm just technologically deficient on the IRC thingy. Don't try to help tonight; at some point, I'll sit down and try to set it up myself).

Posted by: yhbc on August 6, 2002 11:23 PM

Marquis?

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 11:36 PM

Marquis?

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 11:36 PM

Miguel! Fancy meeting you here!

Posted by: Marquis on August 6, 2002 11:37 PM

Hey, Commish - it's easy-peasy! I've just spent a good half-hour chatting to my brand new friend (truth be told I never liked him before) Marquis!

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 11:37 PM

And I've been fooling this rube I met into giving me his credit-card number!

Posted by: Marquis on August 6, 2002 11:38 PM

Ha, it wasn't my real number! ;)

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 11:42 PM

yhbc, i think the answer is obvious. you need a new job. and a new home.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 6, 2002 11:42 PM

I'm stuck at work. I hate my job. I probably can't make it to the meetup. This sucks.

Posted by: Optamystic on August 6, 2002 11:43 PM

Plus, the kind of phone sex you give I can get from Amazon customer service any day of the week. If it's all down to "What does Tom Clancy do for you, honey?" I can do without, thank you very much. Specially for 50 Euros a friggin' minute! ;)

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 11:45 PM

Woohoo! The 2nd reading of the "Zoning By-Law Amendment".

I hear the first reading was Standing Room Only and drew a huge ovation and three curtain calls.

Sony Pictures has already optioned the movie rights for a seven-figure sum.

Tom Cruise is reportedly on-board to play yhbc.

The town of Franklin is being Scotch-Garded.

Stop me before I go too far.

Posted by: Crash on August 6, 2002 11:46 PM

Daryl - stay with us! We're exactly as we seem on the web. No disillusions here! ;)

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 11:47 PM

Miguel - jpoulos has joined the jacuzzi. Come one, come all.

Posted by: Marquis on August 6, 2002 11:48 PM

I just phoned Kaf again - but no luck. I left another silly message, sounding like a gay hussar or something. They must be having cocktails, dinner, fun, children...!

Next time you give me your number, Kaf *Crybaby Gay Hussar voice* please make sure you actually want me to call you! :)

Posted by: Miguel on August 6, 2002 11:56 PM

Thanks for the comfort, Migs. My job basically consists of monitoring servers for a law firm, waiting for something to break down or blow up. 90% of my at-work time is spent gazing vacantly at my monitor, idly surfing the net waiting for the extremely rare, extremely dreaded phone call which tells me that everything has gone kaflooey and that I'll be locked in a windowless computer room for the next several days, trying to make it go "un-kaflooey".

I just got that call. Have fun at the meetup kids. Wish I could join ya.

Posted by: Optamystic on August 6, 2002 11:59 PM

"My job basically consists of monitoring servers for a law firm, waiting for something to break down or blow up."

Mine too! (except for the law firm part)

Kicks ass, doesn't it?

Posted by: Crash on August 7, 2002 12:06 AM

Mostly yes. Today, no.

Posted by: Optamystic on August 7, 2002 12:08 AM

hey - i'm back. you guys aren't going to believe who called for my birthday!!! :-) my first love, timmy mccormick! oh, he sounds just as he did when he was 5. and we would sit in his sister's room and say, 1 - 2 - 3 kiss... and unsuccessfully try to kiss one another. oh, my heart is filled with love and devotion! I think I'll do another little smiley face... this will be my second...:-) So yeah - I'm still standing, amazingly. isn't there a 9622 louisiana some time around cc's wedding? where we all throw some sort of ape initiation party?

Posted by: goneill on August 7, 2002 12:11 AM

isn't there a 9622 louisiana some time around cc's wedding? where we all throw some sort of ape initiation party?

If there wasn't before, there will be now!

Posted by: yhbc on August 7, 2002 12:14 AM

when is it? I'll start saving my empties for the plane fare.

Posted by: scribblative on August 7, 2002 12:21 AM

If you have enough empties for plane fare, you have enough empties to build you own plane. They're just metal and glass, I think.

Posted by: MarsCrash on August 7, 2002 12:45 AM

Well, anyone who goes to Louisiana had better bring back a picture of him/herself standing in front of this.

Posted by: Crash on August 7, 2002 12:50 AM

I just got back from the wing-ding, and I had a blast, although the monkey's in kinda rough shape. Good thing the Mrs. reminded me to zip up my fly otherwise that shot coulda been embarrasing.

(Ms. Lolita:

I live in Portland. Don't tell anyone.)

Posted by: readymade on August 7, 2002 01:49 AM

goddamnit! i go out to dinner with my mom and i come home to find that the party in the 9622 chat is over. screw you guys. :)

dude, readymade, rock on. i'm moving up there relatively soon. i plan on getting a job at a convenience store and bitching about it a lot.

anyway, if anyone's still up, i'm hanging around in the room marquis said, all by my lonesome.

Posted by: pikachu lolita on August 7, 2002 01:58 AM

*peeks in*

Dude, the LA Meetup was H-U-G-E there were like 6 of us and we had some beer!

*ducks out*

Posted by: eyeballkid on August 7, 2002 02:32 AM

*weeps*

It was indeed a total bust.

Miguel...you called the first time while I was talking to Matt. What are the chances? 9622ers must have radar or something. There were about 6 of us, as EBK said, and we chatted a bit and I waited around for Optamystic so I could give him his CD...and the bastid never showed!

We could have used you, Daryl. You would have livened the place up a bit.

Anyway, I had no connection inside the restaurant, so I missed your other call.

But I can tell you, friends and neighbors, Miggety sounds like a suave mofo on the phone.

Glad you liked the birthday present!

I think the highlights of the night were Miguel's messages and having dinner with Matt. Still, that's good in itself. And really, a larger percentage of 9622 was at the meetup than of MeFi.

We are hatching plans for the next Meetup to actually have more people than will fit in one VW Bug.

Posted by: kafkaesque on August 7, 2002 02:53 AM

I'm starting to feel better now.

Posted by: anathema on August 7, 2002 04:40 AM

In a stupor, Ufez and Ike bought an Airstream and have gone on the road searching for monkeys...I think I hear them pulling into the driveway now.

Posted by: anathema on August 7, 2002 04:47 AM

Matt went?
*swoons then faints*
Ah well, I did have a nice little chin-wag with Marquis and Lupo. Missing P_Lo was the unkindest cut of all, though.

Posted by: Miguel on August 7, 2002 06:19 AM

I was going to call, ebk (I feel like I've used this line before...) but we split out before you guys started up...

Posted by: adampsyche on August 7, 2002 06:54 AM

well the meetup would've been fun if adam & his wife would've stopped making out for one second and talked to other people.

Posted by: witchstone on August 7, 2002 09:37 AM

why, that's exactly what I was going to say to you two!

Posted by: adampsyche on August 7, 2002 09:43 AM

time flies when you're making out with Aw. *saucy wink*

Posted by: witchstone on August 7, 2002 10:47 AM

(psst, Miguel, wrong Matt, he meant me)

Posted by: eyeballkid on August 7, 2002 11:01 AM

Not you again!

Posted by: Miguel on August 7, 2002 11:03 AM

yeah, that would be pretty amazing if mr. haughey could be in two places at once.

although, it is california.

Posted by: witchstone on August 7, 2002 11:18 AM

Everyone got to make out with Aw but me.
*pouts*

Posted by: jpoulos on August 7, 2002 11:21 AM

not everyone. just me. and adam. and koko.

Posted by: witchstone on August 7, 2002 11:30 AM

i got no action at all.

Posted by: goneill on August 7, 2002 11:35 AM

who are these two? palegirl on the right, no? that's what I was told...

Posted by: adampsyche on August 7, 2002 11:39 AM

Wow, that was some party. Palegirl (or whoever) appears to be doing her best Anna Nicole Smith imitation.

Posted by: pardonyou? Jeff on August 7, 2002 11:44 AM

I think a 9622 meeting in Nawlins could be good fun. I'm generally opposed to tourist new orleans...more of a garden district girl myself...but I'll make the drive over and down to meet you guys. :) I think it's like 8-10 hours or some-such...and my hubby's parents live in Baton Rouge, so we'd could clear some family obligations out of the way at the same time.

Of course, 3 months from now, I'll be toting a new little monkey with me...but really, spitting up seems to be a national sport in N.O., so who'd notice? Heh.

Posted by: dejah420 on August 7, 2002 05:40 PM

Not to mention that, if you're anything like my wife was when she had our kids, the boobie fairy will show up and cursebless you with a three or four cup size increase, which guarantees bonus beads in Nawlins.

Posted by: Crash on August 7, 2002 06:56 PM

Oh...the boob fairy has already appeared...they cannot get any bigger or I will fall over, I swear. I was busty to begin with...but I'm almost at the custom bra stage now...no more boobs...I don't need em. Got plenty. To quote Robin Williams "Kilimanjaro...I can feed the world!" Somewhere out there is a flat chested 13 year old praying for the boob fairy to visit. She can have my next helping. :)

Posted by: dejah420 on August 7, 2002 08:10 PM

I too am a member of the big butts for white girls club. :) When not pregnant, I'm fairly hourglass shaped...pregnant of course, I'm rather round all the way around. A bit like an egg with legs really. It's sad. :) And from what I understand, the egg shape only gets bigger for the next 3 months. Then of course, I assume that chasing a baby around the place will help me get back down to a reasonable size. (hopehopehope)
