OK!
Things may have gotten a little out of hand in that other thread, what with all those deities and assorted riff-raff stopping in for a spot of tea and salvation. I offer you this new (and very serious) thread in which to review the CDs which have winged their way into your mailboxes. Unless you had Optamystic in your trading group, in which case the CDs you sent to him will never be delivered, because he sleeps under a bridge in Hollywood.
Or something.
Have at it, ye scurvy dogs!
Posted by kafkaesque at August 07, 2002 11:52 AMI've gotten four mixes so far from: Kafkaesque, Marquis, yhbc, and He Who Fucks The Fishes.
And they LOOK beautiful.
My S. O. hates the commish's box set, which means they are fucking tight. (she likes 70's wuss rock).
Sadly, I've been so busy burning and stuffing and mailing, that I haven't yet had a chance to listen to the other cds. But they're really lovely. Tonight, I promise I'll listen to each one. I can't wait.
Posted by: ColdChef on August 7, 2002 11:58 AMOh, and if this is a serious thread, am I not allowed to bring up The Great God Contest?
Posted by: ColdChef on August 7, 2002 12:02 PMI have gotten mixes from:
Walrus
FishFondler
and Aw.
Walrus loses points for almost causing a brain embolism with errors on his disc that sounded like Jimi Hendrix's blender. Other than that, very groovy...as I said on that other, tragically doomed, thread.
FishHumper came through with some excellent tunes, although I can't honestly remember the mix that well right now.
Aw got down with the Beefheart and Zappa, and won serious favor with the inclusion of JR Cash.
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 7, 2002 12:06 PMChef, God cheats at bingo. I think we all know that.
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 7, 2002 12:07 PMColdChef, this has already been done and guess who won?
You don't want to know what happened to the priests of the other contestant.
Posted by: b****fire on August 7, 2002 12:10 PMOh, and Kafka, you didn't really expect THIS crowd could do ANYTHING seriously, did you?
Seriously!
Posted by: b****fire on August 7, 2002 12:11 PMI have received platters from Witchstone (great, as is anything that includes Dead Can Dance, Morcheeba and Nitzer Ebb), DogmaticME and adampsyche's, which I bring up together because one includes a country version of "Gin and Juice" (which my wife and I have been rocking to regularly) and the other includes that Dynamite Hack version of "Boyz n the Hood." And the rest of those two cds are cool. Personally, I can't get Adam's out of my computer, it's a nice quirky poppy little thing that repeats without me noticing it's started over (and I also like anything with Pizzicato Five). Crash's cd came weeks ago and has been in the stereo on and off and is, as I've mentioned here before, exactly as advertised, perfect music for the short, fast blaze through the desert that is the I-15 to Vegas (my favorite long drive, BTW).
Posted by: eyeballkid on August 7, 2002 12:16 PMi have received all of mine (tj, dogmatic, adam, crash, & eyeballkid). i have sampled bits of all of them and i'm very happy. i haven't had time to really listen to them yet, since i don't have a car or a cd walkman. i've been trying to listen at work, but getting the levels right is hard (i'm in a cubicle) so mostly i just hear pieces. it may take me a month, but i will give them all a REAL listen. stay tuned.
Posted by: witchstone on August 7, 2002 12:27 PMAnd here we face another problem. I now want Adam's cd. Any chance Adam or one of the lucky recipients wants to burn another?
Posted by: ColdChef on August 7, 2002 12:30 PMwitchy,
you have? Mine haven't been mailed out yet... I have to swing by the house to pick them up and send them out today. Apparently I'm going to be using Faster Than Light Shipping.

Posted by: kafkaesque on August 7, 2002 12:34 PMIsn't that like a Very Special Episode(r) of Friends?
Not unless it's the one where they all get Ebola.
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 7, 2002 12:37 PMMr Kafkaesque's mix is a blue-grey swirl of haze-suckin' downtempo alt.somethin' and grabbajava crazypop. Sweet-as-pie Flaming Lips nuzzled up against Will Oldhman's yearnin' and Tom Waits' croak. Add a blueberry dash of Prof Longhair and some slowburning pinches of Calexico, Willard Grant Conspiracy and Sparklehorse, and you've got that fine fellow's compilation.
Oh, there's some of that other Elvis, too.
Posted by: Marquis on August 7, 2002 12:37 PMack. the mysterious will oldhman is obviously will oldham (ie bonny billy aka bonnie prince billy aka 1/2 of the palace brothers).
and yes, kafkaesque's is the only one I've got so far (from either mix). Canada is simply so far away.

Posted by: eyeballkid on August 7, 2002 12:40 PMIs it news that clavdivs just posted in MeTa?
Are we posting track listings here or what? Alternatively, mine can be found here.
Posted by: anathema on August 7, 2002 12:48 PMColdChef, I will send out one, but it may not have the cover art from the last one. I also don't have a playlist (I have all the mp3s, but need a refresher as to what order the songs are in). I will burn it from dogmaticme and send it out, no doubt.
more reviews from me after i eat my portabella mushroom burger.
Posted by: adampsyche on August 7, 2002 12:51 PMI have "officially" received mixes from the following:
yhbc - I must confess I've had to listen in small doses. I'm allergic to acapella. But as far as acapella goes, it doesn't get any better than this. :-) The tracks with non-vocal instruments are great. They bring back some of my earliest memories of "challenging" music. (Yes, I once found Oingo Boingo challenging. I was 12.) I'll be pecking away at this for some time.
anathema - One of the best mixes I've ever received. The quirk is quirky without being silly. The transitions are smooth where they're supposed to be. The contrasts are harsh, in an invigorating way. I still haven't fully wrapped my head around this disc, but I think it's fantastic. And I can't say enough about "Sweet Caroline."
That's all I've got. The following monkeys are on notice:
p'Lo (I know it's in the mail)
jonmc (same?)
MarsCrash (what up, homey?)
Miguel (tsk tsk tsk)
The public humiliations will begin soon.
Posted by: jpoulos on August 7, 2002 12:53 PMAnd I'd say a no to tracklists [here], unless everyone in said swap-group has received their mixes. In other words, no spoilers.
(But feel free to post to blogs and things, I just don't want everything ruined, ruined!)
Posted by: Marquis on August 7, 2002 12:53 PMI'll be assisting Mars on the technical side of his mixes (probably tonight). The burner on that PC has been uppity.

must've been thinking about how i'd sent mine to you. so where is it, mothafuckah?
Posted by: witchstone on August 7, 2002 12:57 PMMarquis: Please add to your WONDERFUL "How to make a mix" primer...every mix should include at least one cover song.
Posted by: ColdChef on August 7, 2002 12:58 PMAlso, if I can give one piece of advice to the kiddies, HEM. That song "Pacific Street" makes me weepy.
Posted by: eyeballkid on August 7, 2002 01:03 PMI hope I don't forget any, but we have gotten mixes from:
eyeballkid, dogmatic, marquis, kafkaesque, walrus, fishpoker, witchstripper, and...that's all that comes to mind. shit. i know i'm leaving someone out. crash, i can get your mix from dogmatic. will do that this sunday, if when we head up to NYC for a central park outing and to see sonic youth put on a free show.
eyeballkid: great mix. very smooth on the tracks blending together and creating a cohesive sound. i have been searching for some of this stuff since then.
dogmatic: kudos as usual. some nice stuff on there that i haven't heard before.
marquis: the wife loves it, and i am furious that i have not gotten to listen to it yet, with such a fucking cool pic on the front. the wife says it's groovy.
walrus: haven't listened yet. but will do by this weekend.
fishmolester: good mix. very different sound, but thoroughly listenable and versatile. very cohesive as well.
kafka: songs work together very well, a good driving mix. i feel like eatin' cajun already. by the way, has anyone got confederacy of dunces in word, text, or pdf format?
witchflirt: very nice. i have had lightning man in my head all week, and the rest of the mix is good as well. that one has been in the cd player in the bathroom, and even jasper has been known to pass up on Pat the Bunny to listen to it whilst bathing. truly, the mix of an unsatiable party animal.
Posted by: adampsyche on August 7, 2002 01:03 PMColdChef: I agree, most of the time! What about a slightly modified assertion, that every mix should contain at least one classic or cover song? Sometimes (eg: Elvis' "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You"), the original is absolutely unequalled, but you don't want to fill up a disc with too much of the familiar, covered or not.
eyeballk!d: as I posted last night, got Hem's rabbit songs in the mail, and it's got lovely, lovely album art - well worth buying. also received Kepler's new 'un - Missionless Days - which is a quiet, evening gem. i wrote a review, but won't post it till next week.
Posted by: Marquis on August 7, 2002 01:12 PMCommish, as much as I love the mixes I am very disappointed that the Whiffenpoofs of Yale were not included.

Damn Whiffenpoofs, they're just teasing me.
Posted by: eyeballkid on August 7, 2002 01:34 PMJust wanted to let you all know that I am subjecting my office today to Kafka's, Witchstone's (via Adam), Marquis', & Walrus' mix. They will love it, or remove me from the CD player. Nobody's protested yet.
Posted by: Aw on August 7, 2002 02:13 PMUm, any way that a dickhead who, because of technical incompetence, opted to not participate can glom onto the very end of the event and cop a disk? Interesting trades considered...?
::crickets::
Posted by: UncleFes on August 7, 2002 02:15 PMI have to say, that the amount of Tom Waits on the entire collection of Cds I've encountered has been interesting. Same with the Man in Black, but I think Waits has won the popularity contest for appearing on all but one so far. For some, that may be a good thing, for others, death in an empty glass.
Posted by: Aw on August 7, 2002 02:18 PMAnd Aw, seriously, check Walrus's disc, track 12&13 before you go putting it on random for the office. Mine had VERY LOUD errors.
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 7, 2002 02:18 PMAnd on the Tom Waits theme, I just got in all 5 of Waits' Tales from The Underground discs (rarities etc.). If anyone wants to make a trade, let me know.
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 7, 2002 02:20 PMno tom waits on my mix. he's mine and i'm not sharing him!
glad jasper likes the mix. rating above pat the bunny (if only for a brief moment) is a once in a lifetime experience. i shall treasure it always.
Posted by: witchstone on August 7, 2002 02:22 PMEmail me Fes, I've just worked up a great collection of Peter Framption outakes. They're not of him playing or singing, just some random conversation from the studio mix down of Frampton Comes Alive. He wasn't there. It's only one guy alone in the studio trying to get the drums on "It's a Plain Shame" just right. Well, really, it's not so much conversation as much as it is coughing and hacking.

Courtesy of our afternoon mail delivery, I now hold in my hot little hands the STR8 OUTTA HARLEM CD, which I will proceed to spin in very short order.
The package also contained a note which indicates that I am by far witchstone's favorite person, here or elsewhere*.
*This claim is completely unsubstantiated
Posted by: Crash on August 7, 2002 05:46 PMI'm over the moon with Lupo's, Anathema's and Commish's CDs, not to mention the best birthday present I ever got (from Kaf), the Leonard Cohen record every fan dreams of. I can't stop listening to it. But I shall be giving (boring you all with) a full review as soon as I'm familiar enough with them.
My records have been ordered but, it being August and this being Fado country, they still haven't arrived. But they're worth the wait, believe me.
I love you all. But you knew that already.
Posted by: Miguel on August 7, 2002 08:38 PMI have only received CDs from Lupo and Anathema, and I second the "good weirdness" factor of the latter (although we probably only really needed the Jesus putting a yodel in our soul bit once). ;)
Both are as well beautifully designed, though jp gets my vote for best production values so far. I do have to ask tho - is this an autobiographical set, or just a cyncial rant on the futility of love? If its the latter, bravo, well done - if the former, well, as Mrs. Commish said, "Sweetie, I hope we're not listening to a long, drawn-out suicide note."
Posted by: yhbc on August 7, 2002 09:31 PMOh, and John, if you really want to listen to "The Ghost in You", I will gladly email you the Psych Furs' original version ;)
Posted by: yhbc on August 7, 2002 09:49 PMMarquis: I have listened to two trax so far on your mix, and like it a lot. With my 1.5 mile commute to work, it will take me a while to get through it, but I am looking forward to it.
Posted by: adampsyche on August 7, 2002 09:51 PM"With my 1.5 mile commute to work..."
Sheesh.
I have a 26-mile commute but my car doesn't have a CD player, and I don't have a home stereo with which to dub copies to tape, so I do all my CD listening through my PCs.
On the bright side, I'm doing an Arbitron survey for this week. *evil laughter*
Posted by: Crash on August 7, 2002 09:58 PMFishLet'sJustBeFriendser: having given your mix three full listenings, let me just say that you've done the near impossible.

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on August 7, 2002 10:54 PMIt's not all so dark, commish. Disc One is all love songs.
The Counting Crows track is my attempt to fulfill the "at least one cover song" rule. Besides, while it probably doesn't compare to the original, I think it's a little more heartfelt. A nice twist, I thought.
Posted by: jpoulos on August 7, 2002 11:17 PMAw and Walrus' contributions arrived in the mail today. Reviews will appear tomorrow.
Incidentally, everyone here hates me. Between the usual flow of CDs-for-review-consideration and the upsurge courtesy of the MeFi and 9622 mixes, the mailman has started using a wheelbarrow to deliver my packages.
And what makes it even better - everything is so good!
Posted by: Marquis on August 7, 2002 11:32 PMjpoulos:
Well ... okay. I just worry so! (and this from the guy who's only 16% gay, mind you!)
Just keep trying to listen to the a cappella stuff, and think of that as my own "twist" in the mix. I nearly put on an a cappella version of "What I Got", just to let you know you're getting off easy.
Gotta admit, though - the Counting Crows version of "Ghost", in a word, sucked (yes, IMHO). They should've stuck to "Mrs. Robinson".
Posted by: yhbc on August 7, 2002 11:40 PMHi, I have an overdue announcement to make. I am currently burning my first CD: Freakwater is about to become the modern lovers. Please email me addresses, appropriate people and non-appropriate people. Everyone, gesture, good will, and all. But, I'm kind of intimidated by this second round shennanigans. It sounds like JP has box set or something.

Yeah, like I need another stalker.
Posted by: Crash on August 8, 2002 12:21 AMI'm not sure - if you want a cd email me. There are the people I owe cds to, and then there are people who my conscience dictates that I should send CDs to. So, if you send my your mailing address, I will send you a CD. If you don't I won't.
Posted by: goneill on August 8, 2002 12:22 AMWhy don't you simply send a disc to the people who sent you one, as it was implied in the term "swap".

and surprisingly--well, not really once you consider the fact that i'd probably like to sleep with adam duritz (if he took a bath first)--i really like their cover of the ghost in you. i love the original, but i think acoustic works well for it.
speaking of richard butler, the love spit love cover of how soon is now on the craft soundtrack is actually quite great. and that's my favourite smiths song.
Posted by: witchstone on August 8, 2002 09:58 AMAw's I Wish I Could Just Hear Her Voice is a throaty, fist-into-pillows mix of stamping, concrete rock, eye-to-the-sky new-wave, and Austin Powers-style dandy. The Stooges' "Search and Destroy" rolls things down the steps, starting the disc off with a crash, and it's carried through by Sigue Sigue Sputnik's googly-eyed weirdness, the head-bowed jig of Cash & Daniels' "The Devil Came Back to Georgia", and song after song of glinting-toothed energy. "Ganges A Go-Go" is a goofy standout, as is the unlisted Rain Dogs-era Tom Waits. PJ Harvey shows up twice, her Janis Joplin yowl turning blood to salt.
It's gritty fun, and it's mine.
I'll report on Walrus' later.
Posted by: Marquis on August 8, 2002 10:03 AMI'm sad I don't own a CD burner. Couldn't the concept of "swap" include "giving something of value in exchange for a hearty 'thank you'"? I could put together a kick-ass mix, too. The segue from Enya to Megadeath would be killer!

I got Kaf's CD, which was every bit as good as I expected from the 11629 swap. It's music of a style that I used to listen to almost exclusively, but have since not been mad keen on. This is good, because the mix makes me all nostalgic. Also, it makes my "all tracks" shuffle more interesting in musicmatch: the more different styles in there, the better. No other CDs have made it out here to the boondocks yet.

Walrus' mix is a waterfall-cool slice of down- and uptempo IDM, with some regular DM thrown in for good measure, that sizzles, sweats, and then rubs you down. It's really great - probably the best compilation of its kind that I've heard (including the Ninatune anthologies I've listened to) - with absolutely terrific tracks from Roots Manuva, Reprazent, DJ Shadow and Herbaliser. I really really dig the change-of-pace acoustic guitar tune from the Tiger Lilies ("Reap What You Sow"), and the recurrent James Bond strings throughout the album submerge me in Propellerheads nostalgia. Everywhere there's jazz nuzzling up against electronica, with a healthy chunk of hip hop spirit.
It's a great who's-who of the genre - but, I'll admit, it desperately needs some Amon Tobin! (Oh, and props for not including the great but far-overexposed/played St. Germain.)
Posted by: Marquis on August 8, 2002 11:36 AMUnless I am using one of my injured brain cells here, that Waits song on Aw's mix is Jockey Full of Bourbon, as far as I remember...the same track that opens Jarmusch's Down By Law (which is soon to have a Criterion release, much to the dismay of my long suffering wife).
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 8, 2002 11:38 AMOh, and Witchy, I really dig that Love Spit Love track too. Matter of fact, I like both of their albums very much and hope that the reunited Furs continue in the same vein.

p.s. Is it too late to get in on the swap? I have a mix (track list) all ready to go out the door...
Posted by: krimurlilboo on August 8, 2002 12:43 PMwhy is it that nobody has any love for the bon jovi? need i remind you that that particular track is live, doubling any previously implied rocking?
or is it that you all were 14-year olds when bon jovi first skyrocketed to fame, and have shameful shameful memories of mullets, tight leather pants on men, and singing along to "you give love a bad name"?
ha! i pity all you sorry and aged bastards -- you see, i was not even 8 years of age when "slippery when wet" came out -- meaning i can look back at bon jovi with a tear in my eye and my fist pumping the air along with the kickdrum, because all i'm reminded of is "THE ROCKIN' EIGHTIES" and not growing hair in the wrong places or acne or even when richard simmons had that fucking weird public television show with the muscle bodysuit.
and, of course, speaking of, you realize that destined to appear in a future sweating to the oldies is none other than "lay your hands on me" and i can guarantee you it will make you cry (and quite possibly sweat).
possibly then you'll appreciate what a *rockin'* non-sweaty version i put on the mix.
also again i'd like to remind you that i'm young enough to freely listen to rock bands of the past like GNR, poison, def leppard, journey, boston, and billy joel (even though he neither rocked, nor was a band) without banging my head against a wall.
it's only when the subject gets to pantera, or nirvana, or nofx, or the soup dragons, even (well, not really), that i start feeling like a moron.
that and trance. oh man. late 90s trance. what the fuck was i thinking.
ps. glad you likey, cc.
Posted by: fishfucker on August 8, 2002 12:48 PMLooks like a good mix. Strangely, the last time I did a swap, that's the Jack Logan song that ended up on there. Even stranger, I had meant to put Shrunken Head on the mix, but my brain farted.
I would say for swapping purposes, it would be easier to wait for the next one. Otherwise, if you just gots to swap, I'd be up for it.
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 8, 2002 12:51 PMFishConsentualSexer, I honestly never listened to that stuff. My 80s were spent in New Wave land.
And was Slim Goodbody really Richard Simmons? I don't think so...but I want it to be true!
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 8, 2002 12:53 PMas has been made clear before, i am not ashamed of liking 80's heavy/glam metal. and i'm old enough to remember it.
my god! fishfucker! were you actually born in the 80's? no, i guess you'd be about 78 or 79.
Posted by: witchstone on August 8, 2002 01:04 PMAnd was Slim Goodbody really Richard Simmons? I don't think so...but I want it to be true!
then it was only just a beautiful dream.
*cries*.
Posted by: fishfucker on August 8, 2002 01:38 PMFor me, bon jovi's best work was their first album.
"On the streets where you live
Girls talk about their social lives
They're made of lipstick plastic and paint
A touch of sable in their eyes"
*cough* I like late 90's trance *cough*
I jus' received the mighty Coldchef's Louisiana mix.
Well worth the wait, my friend.
How cool is Boozoo Chavis?
Nice work.
Mr. Resin:
I owe you a cd. please send your mailing address. Are you still living under that bridge?
Posted by: jpoulos on August 8, 2002 05:07 PM*cough* I like late 90's trance *cough*
well, to be honest, i do too, but that's the sort of thing you admit to a good friend when you're drunk, sorta right after he says "you know, andrew w.k. is pretty rockin', actually -- did you know almost every one of his songs has the word 'PARTY!' in the chorus".
it's really not something you reveal on the internet.
there's still a couple of posts on usenet that i made using my real name which basically say the equivalent of "metallica fuckin' rocks".
which are still available, thanks to google, goddamn you very much.
Posted by: fishfucker on August 8, 2002 05:14 PMsubnote: metallica does fucking rock, though, so there.
Posted by: fishfucker on August 8, 2002 05:17 PMTrance is misunderstood. There's imaginative trance and there's banal trance, just like any other genre of music, except for 70s progressive rock, which merely sucks across the board.
You lose me with the Andrew WK, however.
In this game of Gay Chicken, you hand went an inch too far up my thigh. *shudders*
Jpoulos, I'll take a mix from you anytime, muh brutha, but I'm not sure why you feel you owe me one.
I got yours safe and sound and enjoy it often. Did I neglect to say so?
metallica did rock, i think. they just don't rock so hard anymore. andrew w.k. is a weird situation. i mean, he's very obviously crap of the Highest Order. somehow, after spending years trashing crap like Poison and Faster Pussycat, music critics are praising andrew w.k. as the return of good old fashioned cock rock, all the same rock they didn't like when it was out. music critics, can't live with 'em, can't... well... that's it really.
Posted by: eyeballkid on August 8, 2002 05:35 PMOK: For those of you who are getting a mix tape from me. If there is an absolute ban I will oblige, but I have a NOFX song on there - I can take it off - and it's really wrong to compare Nirvana to Bon Jovi.
Posted by: goneill on August 8, 2002 05:38 PMAlright everyone, I got the local domain up and running, and put all of the mp3s from my mix in wwwroot.
so, go here, right-click, save as. no need to do any ftp fucking around.
be gentle, limit to one at a time until at least 10:30 tonight.
songs are generally not in order. i think the first three are, but after that, i forgot the order thay are in. have fun!
Posted by: adampsyche on August 8, 2002 06:31 PMDonger:
I got a bonus mix from you not too long ago, IIRC. Maybe I don't owe, but I want to repay. Now send me your address and quit yer bitchin'.
Posted by: jpoulos on August 8, 2002 06:54 PMHa! I'd forgoten I sent you that.
Muh brains don't all fire gud since I turned 29.
i think the joy in andrew w.k. lies in not caring what either the detractors or, yes, protractors (those anglish bastards) say, and just saying "damn it! party! RAWK! POP HOOKS! GREASY HAIR!"
but i'll say this: hair metal and the like was not really a breath of fresh air in the eighties -- two trillion (yes, new favorite number) bands were doing it, or wanted to be doing it, or were fighting against it. In the midst of all this up-our-collective-ass musician-filled bands that noodle endlessly, dabbling in minor chords and its opposing nu-metal companion, it's nice to have a britney spears figure for little boys. I mean, won't you think of the children? the ones too young to want grinding faux raps packaged on mtv in scary computer animation? the ones who've yet to gain appreciation to listen to plodding walls of guitar backed by jazzy drums and the occasional tuneless lyric?
if anything, andrew wk is the new axl rose, and dammit, was not 'welcome to the jungle' critically acclaimed? why should we not bestow our love on a wiry longhaired poprock singer? why should we listen to critics who haven't recently written reviews damning the american pop phenomenon and need to re-establish their indie credentials?
either way, i don't care, as long as they keep broadcasting mtv2 on channel 28 (KBIT) in san francisco from midnight to 6 am (best shopping network channel ever).
also: irony wears a hat.
semi-lastly: PARTYPARTYYPARTYPARTYPRARYT.
lastly: he's from detroit, right? or kinda from detroit, since he was born in L.A. and then lived in michigan for awhile, parts of which, i understand, are very near detroit (and some places are even in it!)
what rocks more than that? detroit? it's fucking rock city -- is it not? deny that it's rock city! deny it!
Posted by: fishfucker on August 8, 2002 08:19 PMI approached this WK thing without prejudice, but just found it annoying and contrived. But I yam what I yam, and I likes what I likes. I am perfectly fine with it, as long as I don't have to hear/see it (or drink coors light).
In other words, if someone tells me they like Mr. WK, I don't think any less of them, and I would hope they'd feel the same way about my liking Ultravox.
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 8, 2002 08:26 PMwho is this WK person and why haven't i heard of him?
*perplexes*
Posted by: witchstone on August 9, 2002 09:16 AMWell, here.
Like if Spuds McKenize had a love child with Slade, and then it got paid by beer companies to make a shitty throw-backish, not-quite ironic late 80s party metal record.
Or, imagine a world where no one had learned from the mistakes of Winger.
Posted by: dong resin on August 9, 2002 09:42 AMI have to admit that I know someone who is obsessed with Kip Winger. She saw them a few weeks ago and ended up being a little disappointed. Really now.
Posted by: anathema on August 9, 2002 09:44 AMAnd he's playing in Asbury Park Sunday? Wierd, I used to live in Ocean Grove (next town over) and could see that Hall from my house.
Posted by: adampsyche on August 9, 2002 09:45 AMI have not even heard of him, but upon preview, I must say that Detroit is, without a shred of a doubt, Rock City. And not the crack rock kind. Well, that too.
Posted by: adampsyche on August 9, 2002 09:47 AMIn my dirty little hands, I hold cds from the Walrus and Aw. Cover art is great. Reviews to follow soon.

Kaf: Prepare the habanero suppositories.
Posted by: jpoulos on August 9, 2002 10:17 AMdamn, now you made me go and google "habanero suppositories." I'm afraid to click the results.
Posted by: adampsyche on August 9, 2002 10:28 AMMarquis, has no one granted you any commentary after your efforts to describe Kafka's and my own mix? I'm unworthy!
Posted by: Aw on August 9, 2002 01:52 PMI still have not received Marquis' mix.
*tears of despair, as I gaze out into the void, bereft, alone and afraid*
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 9, 2002 01:57 PMDon't get me wrong...I'm happy to have all of my cds now. But it makes trips to the post office a little sadder, knowing that new discs aren't waiting for me.
Posted by: ColdChef on August 9, 2002 03:15 PMWorthy or not Aw (and from the quality of your mix - definitely worthy!), I thank you for your concern. :) Save for pikachulolita's lovely email to me, (and she received my MefiSwap mix, not the 9622 one), I haven't had much of a response, no. As Mr Esque says, however, few people appear to have received it so far, and Noises & Nutmeg contains little-to-no music from the 80s, so I've sorta resigned myself to a terse, big-haired glance from the stilted rockin'-to-Andrew-WK kids. That, and I'm accustomed to being unloved.
Posted by: Marquis on August 9, 2002 04:18 PMI sent you mine today, mr chefman.

Posted by: adampsyche on August 10, 2002 09:16 AMi got marquis' mix -- if its entitled nutmeg & noises (which i guess it is) -- and threw it in my bag planning on listening to it on the way to nyc; but alas, it went with the checked goods and so rode in the storage compartment of the jetblue airbus. i'll listen to it soon though.
you read that right, i'm in new york city. hide your incredibly attractive women.
also your fish, smart guy.
Posted by: fishfucker on August 10, 2002 12:19 PMP-Lo's mix makes me flutter and swoon. Bands I know doing songs I don't, and songs I know by bands I've never heard before. That's what this whole thing is about. I've only received three out of the six I'm expecting, but I'm ready to declare this swap a huge success.
Posted by: jpoulos on August 10, 2002 04:02 PMA big second here on bridgie's mix. Great CD, from start to finish!
Posted by: yhbc on August 10, 2002 04:07 PMHey, if anyone wants to do a little more random swapping, I am just closing up entries in the 27th Somewhat Annual Captain Harlock Memorial CD Swap, which I run on the Raindogs Listserv.
If any of you guys want to get in on some more swapping, send me an email with your mailing address, and I'll put you in the mix. I've had good luck swapping with these guys. Waits fans are an eclectic bunch!
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 11, 2002 02:35 AMThanks for the review Marquis, and the props Adam!
Aw's mix arrived today. Looks massively funky. I am sooo busy moving flats tho, that there's hardly any time for listening or monkey lovin' reviews.
Also, I think my internet connection will be cut off in less than two hours. Should be back with a 56k connection by tonight, but that's like crawling through treacle with a large piano strapped to yr back.
Snail mail forwarding is on though, so no mixes should go astray. Kaf, did I mention yours was opened by customs? I'll post a piccie of the swanky label they put on it, when I get back online.
Posted by: walrus on August 12, 2002 05:12 AMSo...
ColdChef's Louisiana mix sounds just like I imagine Louisiana does. All the bands have got paper plates balanced in hands or beside pianos, and between verses they rip off chunks of meat, hands growin' greasy from the sauce and the fat. Amidst the smoke and the grins, there's blues, tum-ta-tum-rock, and a swallowful of jazz spat into a bucket of hey! Odes to New Orleans, Baton Rouge, creoles a'plenty. Could have used a bigger dose of criminy-cool zydeco, but the variety and glazed, single-minded musical stare paints everything in fat pastel colours - purples, red, yellows and browns.
Fishfucker's Inference is one strange motha. I had always wondered who listens to this sort of music - the joe strummers of the world, sitting in back alleys with acoustic guitars, strummin' away, part balladeer, part bad-boy. FF combines Pixies-kissed wails with some suitably cheesy-pretentious glitchpop (Dntel, Fischerspooner), throwing a live Bon Jovi cut in with Komeda pop and cement-on-asphalt slowpunk. The opening cut - Pop O Pies' "The Catholics are Attacking" is absolutely fuckin' outstanding, a classic for the ages. The leisurely trills of guitar, the "oh oh oh" poppiness of the demented chorus, the rolling r's and denim yowls.
Posted by: Marquis on August 15, 2002 10:59 AMThanks, Marquis. And I agree...fishfucker is a whiz.
Posted by: ColdChef on August 15, 2002 11:54 AMthere is an absolutely excellent track on that same pop o pies album that makes me think they, truly, are the pop rock pomo pinnacle:
it's called "timothy leary's dead", and although the lyrics are rather half-rate and unexciting, there is a voice-emulated guitar solo halfway through.
that's right: mid-way through the song, someone gets on the microphone and says "neeewowrr! dun dun na rowwr! doo doo da deern deeern deerrnn neerrrr!"
best solo ever.
maybe for the next disc.
Posted by: fishfucker on August 15, 2002 12:21 PMHi there,
Wow, such a flatering review of some of my ancient stuff. That stuff was done back in 1982.
In case you were wondering the lead guitar solo that's sung was done by myself and there's a reason for that. When it came time for the Guitarist to do the overdub, he was temporarily unavailable for some reason.
So I said to the sound engineer "oh fuck it, I'll just go in and sing it now, so he has an idea of what I'd like it to sound like when he gets back."
But it sounded so well... "good" isn't the word, let's just say "interesting" that we decided to leave it that way.
The "Catholics Are Attacking" was acutally from a demo tape that was recorded in 1980 and tweaked in 1982 for the White EP.
If anyone would like to get in touch with any of the pop-o-pies, you can drop us a line at:
PieheadCentral@hotmail.com
and our wonderful (official) website should be up by 5-26-2003. So watch for it.
A Pop-O-Anthology is scheduled for release later this year (2003). It includes everything from 1984 - 1993 and 2 bonus tracks never before released.
You can buy it direct from our official pop-o-pies website (for way cheaper than you could in the stores) and we would prefer it that way.
We are on something of a crusade now to cut out all the middle men (distributors, record stores, ect...) and just deal directly with the folks who want our music so we can get it to you as inexpensively as possible, and actually get paid for it for a change.
What we mean is, record companies are natorius for not paying their bands (usually because the distributors burn the record companies) and we are trying to keep what little money the music makes so we can keep funding the releases of our latest projects.
We hope all bands follow our lead on this and encourgae their listeners to buy direct from their websites, because you'll be giving your money (for the band's music) directly to the band, and they'll be getting all of it, as opposed to none of it. That's it in a nutshell.
And as a side note to this, don't believe the bullshit that you read in the papers, when the record companies say peer to peer downloading is robbing money from the airtist.
Shit! they never pay us anyway, so most of us don't care if you rip our stuff because we usually never see any money from it anyway.
I think any band worth their salt would tell their listeners "If you are really broke and can't afford to buy our stuff now from our website, then yes by all means rip it from somebody. If you really like our stuff we'd rather you have it now and buy something from us later, when you have the bread, then deprive youself of inspiring sounds in the meantime." OK? that's fair, I think.
All right, thanks again Mr. F. for the nice review.
Be good.
-Joe Pop-O-Pie
(pop-o-pies vocalist/songwriter)
Wow! Thanks so much for the fascinating information and sober assessment, Joe!
