August 17, 2002 : You Keep Coming Back Like A Song

Frankly speaking, which Sinatra-spun lyric is you?

Posted by at August 17, 2002 08:35 PM

People have said these things about that :

It's just too easy to say, "The Lady is a Tramp."

I'll get back to you...

Posted by: readymade on August 17, 2002 08:43 PM

oh, um, "these boots were made for walkin'"

Posted by: quonsar on August 17, 2002 08:46 PM

If I haven't listened to Nelson Riddle's arrangement of Johnny Mercer's and Henry Mayer's Summer Wind a thousand times, I've never breathed.

It's all about irresponsibility. Guy falls in love, the summer ends, he moves on and is all the better for it. The way Sinatra sings it he actually exults in giving her the push. The way his voice goes stronger as he distances himself, adlibbing those over-joyous "bye byes", is the opposite of sentimentality (going against the grain of the lyric) and makes "Summer Wind" the cruellest, most beautiful song I've ever heard. Class!

Quonsar, you thread-despoiling napalm-wasting Vietcong commie! :)

Posted by: Miguel on August 17, 2002 08:50 PM

"I keep coming back like a song, but you keep coming back like malaria."

(I kid).

I'm not a huge Sinatra guy, but I do like "It Was A Very Good Year".

Posted by: kafkaesque on August 17, 2002 09:54 PM

For me, it's Guys and Dolls. But, I think that's because it's one of my all time favorite movies. It, Aunti Mame and a box of chocolates and I'm a happy, happy girl for an afternoon. :)

I'm not a Sinatra lyric, I'm a Bob Dylan lyric:

If Dogs Run Free
Why Not We?

"I Wish I Were in Love Again" - some classic lines here, including:

When love congeals - it soon reveals
The faint aroma of performing seals;
The double-crossing of a pair of heels
I wish I were in love again...
(Hey, it's the story of my life in one sweetly acerbic quatrain... Neat!)

Posted by: scribblative on August 17, 2002 10:31 PM

I'm a Queen lyric.

Crash - ah - Saviour of the universe
Crash - ah - He'll save ev'ry one of us

OK, so I took a little poetic license. Sue me.

Posted by: Crash on August 17, 2002 10:48 PM

Ain't She Sweet...my grandmother used to sing that one (or at least the first couple of lines) to me when I was a little bunny...

I have been taught that Dean Martin was way cooler, just over looked.

But those who taught me were pretty fucked up, so I take it with a grain of salt.

Posted by: adampsyche on August 17, 2002 11:29 PM

i am the lyric to louie louie.

Posted by: quonsar on August 17, 2002 11:34 PM

I did it my way.

Posted by: döng on August 17, 2002 11:49 PM

Two words: My Way

Posted by: tj on August 18, 2002 01:58 AM

Sometimes it's "The Best is Yet to Come." Sometimes it's "I Wanna Be Around." Right now, it's "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry," but only because I'm still at work on a Saturday night. Boo freakin' hoo.

That's Life :

That's life (that's life), that's what all the people say You're ridin' high in April, shot down in May But I know I'm gonna change that tune When I'm back on top, back on top in June

I said that's life (that's life), and as funny as it may seem
Some people get their kicks stompin' on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down
'cause this fine old world, it keeps spinnin' around

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out and I know one thing
Each time I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race

That's life (that's life), I tell you I can't deny it
I thought of quitting, baby, but my heart just ain't gonna buy it
And if I didn't think it was worth one single try
I'd jump right on a big bird and then I'd fly

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out and I know one thing
Each time I find myself layin' flat on my face
I just pick myself up and get back in the race

That's life (that's life), that's life and I can't deny it
Many times I thought of cuttin' out but my heart won't buy it
But if there's nothin' shakin' come this here July
I'm gonna roll myself up in a big ball a-and die

But only because DOA covered it.

I'm just a fella, a fella with an umbrella,
Looking for a girl who saved her love for a rainy day.
I'm just a fella, a fella with an umbrella,
Glad to see the skies of blue have turned into skies of gray.
Raindrops have brought us together,
And that's what I long to see.
Maybe the break in the weather will prove to be a break for me.
So I'll be the fella, that fella with an umbrella,
If you'll be the girl who saved her love for a rainy day.

Say it with me: "Awwwwwwwwwwww...."

Posted by: jpoulos on August 18, 2002 10:27 AM

That's great, man.

*vomits quietly*

Posted by: döng on August 18, 2002 12:24 PM

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I'm awwwing the vomit, not the song.

Posted by: brittney on August 18, 2002 01:20 PM

I've always been pretty partial to "The Way You Look Tonight," "A Very Good Year" or "Brazil."

To me Sinarta was King and that Elvis guy was just some hick.

*ducks*

Posted by: eyeballkid on August 18, 2002 05:08 PM

Yeah, that Sinarta was something, wasn't he? I remember when he and Sammy Divas Jr. and Dean Maritan used to really tear up Las Vages. Those were the dyas.

Posted by: Crash on August 18, 2002 06:27 PM

no more drubk typing, Crash

Posted by: scribblative on August 18, 2002 07:10 PM

I suppose I can sympathize with that. I expect to be drubk in an hour or so.

The fuck me part comes later.

Posted by: Crash on August 18, 2002 07:51 PM

I'm sorry. I meant Sidharta.

Posted by: eyeballkid on August 19, 2002 02:27 AM

Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema Iwo Jima goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes - ah

Oh, and stavros, the US Bombs version was much better.

Posted by: Ufez Jones on August 19, 2002 11:33 AM

One for my baby. ...And one more for the road.

Posted by: MarsCrash on August 19, 2002 01:57 PM

I actually once did karaoke to "Summerwind". For pure Frank pleasure, though, nothing tops "The Lady is a Tramp". The horns! The saucy delivery! The slightly-off phrasing, and the inappropriate use of "broad"! Why do you need any other Sinatra song?

Posted by: yhbc on August 19, 2002 07:00 PM

I've been singing it all day, so "Fly Me to the Moon" must be my Frank song.

Fly me to the moon indeed. Half the time I'm already there.

Why not join in and say something too?
