Now is the time during the 9622.net CD Swap when we begin to humiliate those who have yet to send out their discs.
Who are they? And who do they think they are?!
Posted by jpoulos at August 19, 2002 02:01 PMI'm sorry! TJ got a new computer game, and time has been a little short for me. I've got the playlists finished. Have you ever tried to burn a CD with an abacus attached to a waffle iron. It's not easy, I'll tell ya! They go out Wednesday, and there will be two of them to make up for the delay.
Posted by: MarsCrash on August 19, 2002 02:06 PMMy group has yet to receive discs from:
Miguel
MarsCrash
i still don't have jonmc's, but he assures me his is in the mail, so his name doesn't appear on that list.
Nothing says "I'm sorry" like a mix disc in your mailbox. :-)
Posted by: jpoulos on August 19, 2002 02:12 PMCrucify them!
I never got my cds from goneill, but she sent me a pair of her panties and a compromising photo of her and witchstone, so...it's all good.
Posted by: ColdChef on August 19, 2002 02:18 PMThe GrapeApes have been well represented, with only tragic anti-hero Optamystic not delivering (or receiving, for that matter) any goods.
This is, however, understandable because Optamystic sleeps under a bridge and does not have access to a burner because he is a magical goatherd.
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 19, 2002 02:18 PMThe last of the Mojo-Jojo discs was on my desk this morning. The 9622 swap is thus 5-for-5, whilst my group in the other swap is still a big fucking donut-hole-for-5.
Not that I'm bitter or anything. I think Friday was the actual deadline, so I expect they'll start trickling in this week. I just like saying "a big fucking donut-hole-for-X".
Posted by: Crash on August 19, 2002 02:21 PMI have a theory that Optamystic is to Eyeballkid what Tyler Durden is to Fight Club's Edward Norton character. He's a fabrication. An alter-ego. An Anti-EBK.
And his intentions are not good. Not good at all.
Posted by: jpoulos on August 19, 2002 02:24 PMI have a theory that Optamystic is to Eyeballkid what Tyler Durden is to Fight Club's Edward Norton character
I've seen them in the same room...
Oh wait, that happened in Fight Club too.
ha ha.
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 19, 2002 02:30 PMj-mc's is probably waiting for me at home. wOOt.
CC and donger, did you guys get yours? I think one of you mentioned something about getting one.
b**** and goneill, yours are going out this week.
I'm obviously working on extras, so speak up if ya want one.
Can I get a word in about croquet? CROQUET CROQUET CROQUET
anathema: not yet, but I am waiting with throbbing nipples.
Posted by: ColdChef on August 19, 2002 02:39 PMbong_resin promised me hit of his, but it hasn't arrived =/
Posted by: adampsyche on August 19, 2002 02:50 PMi know that daryl (optamystic) is/was driving his friend kristin to north carolina sometime around now, so that may account for his absence in some way. also, if he is an alter-ego of eyeballkid, then eyeballkid owes me a very serious explanation. :)
Posted by: pikachu lolita on August 19, 2002 02:57 PMBurner devils were at work, mighty anathema.
There was much cursing and throwing of things.
Now, leeches have been applied and the bad humours have been sucked out of my burnner.
Both yours and adampsyche's discs went in the mail this morning.
Apologies for the delay.
If I don't get one from CC soon I am gonna go find a whole cd full of nothing but southern white gospel quartets and send it to HIM.
That would even scare ME.
Posted by: b****fire on August 19, 2002 03:24 PMC'mon, B****frog, I said that I'd send you a mix out of the kindness of my pea-pickin' heart. Don't whine 'cause your free lunch is coming way past noon.
(I returned my burner, so don't hold your breath...literally. My new one won't be in for weeks. Just don't move between now and then. (don't move to a different home, you can still, you know, move around and stuff))
Posted by: ColdChef on August 19, 2002 03:28 PMLets see, the monkeys are optamistic (yes I know it is misspelled) of optamystic's sounds, which sounds mystic, and that sounds bananas to me.
Bong_resin(I know this is Dong_resin), gee if sends me some hits in the mail. I can imagine my neighbors watching me opening my mail from Bong_resin and seeing me take large inhales of it and then puffing out a smoke ring or two. Just please don't send me banana peels to smoke. And Dong_resin, no I do not want mail addressed from you, as I know your scent(LOL), like monkey poo *splat* thanks. Cold Chef, I think I'm on to the type of Chef you are. And why this Chef is Cold, too. Do you enjoy the frozen food section at the grocery story, best place to check out woman they say. And how I thought this, you and your fetish with your banana nipples and others... Making you ColdChef of nipples, can you now dish me up a plate, as that would make me hum a real tune.
TCS: I'm guilty as charged. (hey, I'm starting to get pretty good at ThomCatSpeak)
Posted by: ColdChef on August 19, 2002 03:55 PMi ♥ banana nipples. and tcs.
hey, thomcatspike, have you ever considered starting your own blog?
Posted by: adampsyche on August 19, 2002 04:00 PMYes, Me not public yet and I'm having trouble with my front page, so I have been stuck in the water(I have had a lot of ideas yet I do not want to something and then have to start over) so until blogger gets back with me, I'm without wind for my sails.
Posted by: thomcatspike on August 19, 2002 04:18 PMLet the record show, cc, that I offered to send YOU a cd, which you declined....sheesh, I've been watching the mailbox for DAYS now.
Seriously, you don't have to send me one-I did think it was kind of you to offer. But if you call me b****frog again you're in deep kimchi.
Posted by: b****fire on August 19, 2002 04:30 PMJeez Chef. You could have sent something to Turkey and back in the time this is taking!
Posted by: kafkaesque on August 19, 2002 04:35 PMIt's coming. Just veeeeerry slowly. I apologize for the tease.
Posted by: ColdChef on August 19, 2002 04:35 PMJeez Chef. You could have sent something to Turkey and back in the time this is taking!
And just HOW could you be sure of that? It's not like anyone here has ever sent anything to Turkey, for G*d's sake!
Posted by: ColdChef on August 19, 2002 04:37 PMand a compromising photo of her and witchstone, so...it's all good.
Um...don't the 9622 bylaws say such a photograph must be posted forthwith?
Posted by: pardon me on August 19, 2002 04:40 PMCONGRATULATIONS!
thomcatspike.com is available
you must do this.
Posted by: adampsyche on August 19, 2002 04:40 PMI heard Optamystic got sent to Turkey. He was last seen with a book and a CD and a ripped open package originating from the American South...
Posted by: MarsCrash on August 19, 2002 04:41 PMUm...don't the 9622 bylaws say such a photograph must be posted forthwith?
Sure. Anyone want to buy me a scanner?
Through the miracle of modern tele-scanning technology, I am both pleased and delighted to present the above-mentioned compromising photo:

Yes, I am guilty of not sending out my CDs yet! I feel awful. I should have got them last week but it's August here and the whole of Lisbon is closed. The moment I get them I'm sending them out express mail. Marquis and Kafkaesque are also getting extra CDs. They're worth the wait is all I can shamefully say.
My wife just popped in to say the following question was just now asked on our "Weakest Link" programme:
The Philosophy of the Boudoir is a book written by:
a)The Marquis de Sade
b)Miguel Esteves Cardoso
The guy answered b). I'm quite proud of that, don't know why. They may not have the slightest notion of the titles of my books but at least they've got the right idea.
Posted by: Miguel on August 19, 2002 05:11 PMMy life's goal is to live in a country that's closed for August.

P-Lo, Optamystic is my evil incarnation. I have learned nothing from him. Trust me. (*swings hypnotist watch*)
As has been stated, I've gotten TJ's cd so the MJ's are 5 on 5 or 5 by 5 or whatever.
I have a decision to make. I'm not sure whether to read TCS's new blog on a daily basis or save it up all for the weekend when I can sit and bask in TCSglish for hours. Please spikersthomcaht boy, don't be of my hurting.
Posted by: eyeballkid on August 19, 2002 05:34 PMOK, let's talk penalties for overdue packages! What might be slipped in with the CD to sweeten the delay? Dirty postcards? A second-hand but good CD (I have a lot of these)? Beer Nuts? A nice, long letter? Stamps? There aren't a lot of fun things that aren't illegal or extremely heavy...
Posted by: Miguel on August 19, 2002 05:54 PMPips took mine to the post office on Friday so most of youse should already have them in your hot little appendage-of-choice, except for Miguel, who has the gall to live on another continent. Plus, pips had to fill out a form describing the packages contents. She had extreme difficulty resisting the temptation to write "beer nuts and poop flinging equipment"
Posted by: jonmc on August 19, 2002 06:44 PMNot to be quarrelsome or anything, but I frankly lack the patience and mental focus to figure out whether thomcatspike is asking me for a disc or not.
Thommy, distill the paragraph above that mentions my name 12 times into one simple, declarative or interrogative sentence with basic punctuation at the end of it, and I'll be happy to comply with your wishes, there, Shakespeare.
Posted by: döng on August 19, 2002 07:14 PMYou're to talk dong, I can't figure out if you got mine and I have been asking for days. CC, you should have mine by now. If it doesn't show up this week let me know and I'll send another. No monkey sweat.
Posted by: anathema on August 19, 2002 08:03 PMdong, no don't send me a cd, I can't burn cds, so instead of going into a full story like now, I used some humor. Even said LOL so you don't think any post of yours, I think that they stink. You do very well in you post. Plus when I first wrote it I had mentioned something of a question, is this guy "Bong_resin" also Dong_resin too. Then on preview, I saw more posted in the thread. So I had to re-write and still try to seem funny to the point, bad humor, like toilet humor I guess. Great, as now I'm a wanted poster, who just was warned by the boss, the gods at work are budget cutting and you know where I post from folks...my system at home, is being created.
Posted by: thomcatspike on August 19, 2002 08:07 PM
As a small compensation for my lateness I've dug up ten lovely summer songs from the great Cesária Évora, the barefoot diva of Cabo Verde. You want boozy heartbreak, melancholy laughter and absolute authenticity, look no further. Enjoy!
If we are talking late penalties then coldchef needs to send out mardi gras beads and moon pies.
Posted by: b****fire on August 19, 2002 10:23 PMJust got through jonmc's mix once, and I must say it was absolutely fantastic. Mrs. anathema is making me dub it tonight as she embarks on her appointment as a painting professor tomorrow and needs as many good CDs as possible. I need a few days before I comment on the tracks, but it was worth the wait.
Posted by: anathema on August 19, 2002 10:37 PMGlad you liked it, anathema, yours was pretty damn good too. I like the Wanda Jackson and Lee Hazlewood especially. Good reach, man.
Posted by: jonmc on August 19, 2002 10:52 PMI still have no idea what you're typing `bout, Thom, but for what it's worth, your blog is pretty.
Anathema, I'm not aware of you asking me anything, however, I just retrieved my mail, and your disc has safely arrived. I've only started listening, but the playlist is damned impressive. I'll offer more of an informed opinion later, but I can say the opening track is a ballsy choice. Nice one.
I know no one would type a negitive reply and so this is really a rhetorical question, but has anyone received anything even remotely like a dull mix from a 9622 person?
Posted by: döng on August 19, 2002 11:17 PM"... has anyone received anything even remotely like a dull mix from a 9622 person?"
Dull, no. Way out of my league, oh yeah.
Remember, I like Tesla, so that puts me in the second-lowest tier of musical tastes, just above John Denver fans.
:)
Posted by: Crash on August 19, 2002 11:24 PMBTW, one song on my mix--"Top Top" by Os Mutantes--is in Portugese. I shall be expecting a translation from Miguel.
Posted by: jonmc on August 19, 2002 11:42 PMAlrighty! My CD's are finally burned and cases produced (both with major help from the one we call Teej). I'm not sure that my musical tastes run to the depths of the CDs I've received, but I can only reflect my tastes. I turn 35 in a month, and I have no desire to be cutting edge/cool guy anymore. I'm looking forward to many productive years of telling kids to get off of my lawn.
Posted by: MarsCrash on August 20, 2002 12:01 AMI like the thomcatspike look as well, but I don't know which I like better - the thomcatspikish blocky layout on the archives page, or the (for now) food 4 thought layout on the front page. Keep at it, tcs.
35? youngster. (feeling very old at the moment).
Posted by: yhbc on August 20, 2002 12:30 AMWoops, forgot - jon: love your mix so far. Have you heard John Prine and Bonnie Raitt doing his song "Angel from Montgomery"? Great song - I'll send it if you want it.
Posted by: yhbc on August 20, 2002 12:34 AMWow, jon - now you've really impressed me. Seriously. First thing I'm going to do when I get my burner is scorch you Caetano Veloso's "Sampa", a lovely song that actually mentions the Mutantes.
*Ahem* All that's lacking for you to be a fully-fledged cosmopolitan is to remember that there are two Us in Portuguese. Think Zulu, Honolulu, U2. Portugese would be pronounced Portu - geez! To get the hard G of Portugal you need the extra U. And to think you live among us! :)
Posted by: Miguel on August 20, 2002 12:50 AMMy life's goal is to live in a country that's closed for August.
*big shit eating grin* My next goal is to find a job that has manditory siestas and two hour lunches.
Miguel, we do pronounce it Portu-geeze (well, at least americans raised in texas do). Will you settle for Portoghese? ;)
Posted by: romakimmy on August 20, 2002 09:06 AMI like the thomcatspike look as well
Not to whiz on anyone's wonderfullness, but that's one of the standard blogtemplates that Blogger offers off the shelf. I await some words from TCS to match the elegance and zippiness of the borrowed design.
Yes, I'm drunk and grumpy. Fuckin' sue me.
Heh.
Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on August 20, 2002 09:40 AMIf we are talking late penalties then coldchef needs to send out mardi gras beads and moon pies.
You know what you've got to do for those, right b****?
Posted by: Ufez Jones on August 20, 2002 09:54 AMThat'll do fine, romakimmy! Except to fare portoghese, in Italian, means not paying for something (or not sending back CDs in a swap), doesn't it? In the UK they say welshing but it's probably very un-PC.
I meant portu-jeeze, as the g followed by e is read j in English (portage, porridge).
As for the siestas and two-hour lunch breaks only Andalusia fits the bill - at least until Osama bin Laden gets it back.
Posted by: Miguel on August 20, 2002 10:15 AMAh, I see what you meant. It's not often one is able to say they are spelling deficient in two languages, as I am.
As I understand it, fare portoghese is more along the lines of being tight with money, and if you can manage to get something for free, you take advatange of it. But it's not the same as welshing on something.(I think, I learned from context, not classes.)
Fare una spagnola, on the other hand, is more in the vein of this thread on the blue. ;-)
Posted by: romakimmy on August 20, 2002 10:35 AMWow, thanks romakimmy. We must keep up the Southern European side! :)
Posted by: Miguel on August 20, 2002 10:46 AMCommish, I love that version of "Angel from Montgomery" thanks for asking. If you dig John Prine you should check out some of Todd Snider's stuff. He's got some of the same wicked wit and mournful eye Prine does, "Happy to Be Here" is an especially good song. And he's even on Prine's label Oh Boy! records.
Posted by: jonmc on August 20, 2002 10:51 AMYou know what you've got to do for those, right b****?
In that case it is unnerving to realize every child who lives within three hours of New Orleans has a toybox FULL of those beads.
Posted by: b****fire on August 20, 2002 12:47 PMFor those who wonder, my archive page, I deleted that template, yet it is still there. Every time I see, Food 4 thought, I want to puke..........I wrote blogger yet to no response. Problem, when I view my blog it takes me to the archive page yet I can't change the template for that page in settings. Neither in settings will it allow me to find or change that template.
When I first registered I used a name and some info, then when I went to set up TCSish I changed my personal info, changed the manager of the account and deleted the previous blog then I started TCSish. So I'm thinking the archive page is in a separate account, my old one(???) Again, I can not change the settings for my archive page. Any monkeys going to the Dallas Blog meet up?, well I am, as soon as I find where it is at tomorrow. So this is why I have not been working on it more and it is not public :(
Why don't you just copy your first post (if that's all there is), delte the blog and start over again? As far as I remember, there are setting in the archiving section for the archive template.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 21, 2002 09:19 AMWait! No time for CDs ... I suggest we gang up on anyone who hasn't posted reviews yet ... oh no, that's me. Scratch all that. I thought the CDs were great. Can't work out which is my favourite. I will review them one day. When you least expect it.
Posted by: walrus on August 21, 2002 12:27 PMIs it again time to say, "Move over bacon, now there's somthing meatier!"
Posted by: eyeballkid on August 21, 2002 12:53 PMMy reviews, as I think i left some out before:
Anathema: one of my favorite mixes ever. Pleasingly all-over-the-map.
yhbc: Upon third and fourth listens, my prejudice against acapella has begun to die. That was my only issue earlier--and the issue was with me, not the cd. I just love hearing those Mission of Burma and Dead Milkmen tunes that "the big kids" always listened to, but which scared me as a pre-teen.
pikachu lolita: love love love this mix. i've already bought two discs because of it. It may finally push me into Ben Folds territory, which I've always wanted to visit. Have you seen the brochures? It's lovely. Plus, I sleep with the cover art under my pillow.
jonmc: as i expected, a mix that runs the whole gamut of popular music from the last 40 years. it holds together exceptionally well, though, and the liner notes are the best i've ever received.
I also got bonus discs from the following who weren't in my group:
Walrus: Our dear friend walrus has made a fatal mistake, as i'll never be part of another swap without pestering him to join. he's really got his finger on the pulse of what's New and Important and Good. You can't hide, dude.
Witchstone: STR8 OUTTA HARLEM is my newest workout CD. I put in AS SEEN ON TV (which one is 9622, which is mefi?) when i'm working on php. Surprisingly these discs make excellent companions to Walrus's disc, as they've got that sort of old-skool electronic/dance groove goin' on.
Kafkaesque: The Jennifer Jason Leigh to my Bridget Fonda has, not surprisingly, put together a mix I'd be proud to have made myself. On my CD shopping list: giant sand, calexico, sparklehorse.
Posted by: jpoulos on August 21, 2002 01:53 PMI prefer to think of myself as the Donald Sutherland to your Donald Sutherland.

Posted by: witchstone on August 21, 2002 04:42 PMcommish and jonmc and other John Prine fans,
Have you heard his duet with Iris Dement, "In Spite of Ourselves"? It's so sweet and hilarious - and it says monkey.
She don't like her eggs all runny
She thinks crossin' her legs is funny
She looks down her nose at money
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny
She's my baby I'm her honey
I'm never gonna let her go
He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen
He's my baby
And I'm his honey
Never gonna let him go
In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.
She thinks all my jokes are corny
Convict movies make her horny
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs
Swears like a sailor when shaves her legs
She takes a lickin'
And keeps on tickin'
I'm never gonna let her go.
He's got more balls than a big brass monkey
He's a whacked out weirdo and a lovebug junkie
Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon
Payday comes and he's howlin' at the moon
He's my baby I don't mean maybe
Never gonna let him go
tizzie---that's me and pips official "song"...It describes us perfectly...thanks for posting it..
Posted by: jonmc on August 21, 2002 10:25 PMI haven't had the chance to review the fine discs I received (sheerly out of the generosity of people's hearts, as I wasn't technically a part of this recent trade).
Anathma's disc is amazing all around, but for me the absolute stand out track is "Sweet Caroline" by the langly schools music project, which is not only and amazing track but one that completely comes from out of left field, and really makes the whole disc unique.
The packet of moneypalnt seeds from the Squirrel Nut Zippers was another unique touch. I can only hope my disc will manage to amuse you on the same level.
Jonmc's disc is exactly what I'd expect from him, chock full of pop culture nuggets from all over the road, all lovingly detailed in the liner notes. "It's my life" by Wendy O. Williams had me all keyed up and unruly with visions of buses going through televisors and shit blowing up in that cheesy mid-eighties video manner.
Jon IS the Doctor Johnny Fever of 9622.net.
We know this.
So far I've recived in this swap and the one before it a total of 8 discs from 9622ers, all having their own disticive personalities, and all greatly appreicated.
I look forward to the next swap.
Posted by: dong resin on August 21, 2002 10:50 PMI don't know quite where to post this, so the most recent swap thread seems as good as anywhere else....
A friend of mine just broke up with her beau, and she needed a little something to drink whiskey to, so I made her one of the more depressing and weepy cd mixes I've ever made. It's like a journey through the cruddiness of heartbreak, starting with confusion and then meandering into the minefield of misery, toward those fantasies of revenge, and finally culminating with the hope that it's not all crap after all.
I say this because if anyone is interested in it, I can burn them easily for y'all. I know many of you are blissfully happy, but if you wanted it as insurance against the future....
(There probably aren't many unheard tunes on it, but I think it's the trip it takes you on that's the key....)

YAY! My, I mean your records have finally arrived! I'll be packing them tomorrow and sending them out on Monday. I had ordered two titles in order to be prepared for the next swap but, given the delay and your indulgence, I'm decided to send my swap partners both records, hoping my living in a closed-for-August country will be forgiven me.
Then I'll get a burner and you'll be on your knees begging me to go back to sending proper records!

Posted by: tj on August 22, 2002 06:18 PMThe MarsCrash mix has arrived! From the tracklist, it looks really good, but I haven't heard it yet.
Thanks, Monkey Brother.
Posted by: jpoulos on August 26, 2002 08:04 PMI'm here to say that the MarsCrash mixes not only arrived, but they are
* bites pinky *
ex-cellent.
I have only listened through the "Shine" disk so far, but (and no offence to the other monkeys) it has taken its place as my favorite mix CD (or course, I said that about all the others too, I believe).
I'm just glad at least one of us had the cojones to put on not one, but two songs named "Monkey Man". Oh, and Marty - Mrs. Commish thanks you muchly for reminding her of the Fall - she saw them in '86 or so, and it all came rushing back, so to speak.
In short, then - excellent work, sir!

We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys
wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone
else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts
on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found
here. Thanks.
