August 23, 2002 : Bringing Up Baby

[Or how not to throw out the bath water with the beloved little pygmy marmoset we call 9622.net]

Commish has just brought our relationship with MetaFilter into the open. Kaf has warned us about this since day one. I'm probably the guiltiest party so far, as I've linked to us twice - though the one on the original 9622 thread shouldn't count.

But it's probably time we agreed on how to behave over on the sacré bleu so that it doesn't look like a rampage of not-so-subliminal self-linking. Some rules seem obvious: no linking; no private 9622 jokes; no monkey-derailments on innocent threads which happen to mention, say, the Kinks or Alice Faye.

Knowing how we work here, this should almost certainly be over by comment no. 7 and we can get back to what we do best. I mean, it is Friday! Yee ha!

People have said these things about that :

That pygmy marmoset is fully grown, by the way. Oh and they cost around $5000. I checked...

Posted by: Miguel on August 23, 2002 01:07 PM

As I said on the grey, was it a post that had 9622 in mind? It seems like a thread that was posted innocently enough, and we came along. There wasn't a link to 9622 on the whole thread, but someone did mention the site. I agree, it is water that needs to be tread lightly, but I don't think anyone behaved too badly.

Posted by: adampsyche on August 23, 2002 01:08 PM

I thought it was wierd when YHBC was talking about 9622 on MeTa. Just me probably.

But it seems kind of self-important.

If MetaFilter people really want to play here too, that's fine, but don't think that anyone really gives a marmoset's ass about these shenannigans over here.

As always, I hate the cliquishness, and would strive to avoid it.

Posted by: kafkaesque on August 23, 2002 01:13 PM

Apparently Velvethelvis had never heard of 9622.net. He has now. Let's face it: monkeys are popular!

Commish sounds ever more bitter because he can't get here during the day - can nothing be done? Or is it all a firewall thingie on his side? I recall Lupo mentioning some possibility.

Posted by: Miguel on August 23, 2002 01:17 PM

It's all about his network, as far as I know, although he may be able to get through by using just the ip address. I'm not sure, as I don't know what they've done on his end. I'll look into it.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 23, 2002 01:29 PM

Does 9622 have a static IP? I know most hosts don't offer that, unless for a price. But, isn't Blogfucker also mirrored onto Blogflicker? Can 9622 be mirrored to something else?

Posted by: adampsyche on August 23, 2002 01:31 PM

A unique IP address would cost $60/year. That's more of a last resort option.

Blogflicker.com does mirror blogfucker.com, i suppose i could take one of the domains i'm not using and mirror 9622. that's worth a try--at least until i need the domain name back.

i tried a subdomain when the problem first arose. it didn't work.

i've emailed Dreamhost tech support to see if they have any ideas.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 23, 2002 01:39 PM

I thought the whole original intent of 9622 (correct me if I'm completely outta my tree) was to provide the space for monkeyplay that was frowned upon in the blue. It seems like the two sites provide different but complementary services, and there shouldn't be a competition between the two. I think Matt is probably relieved that the monkeys have moved to a different jungle: it seems to me to be self-policing at it's finest. If the walls of the blue become too confining, make a new home. That seems to be a very pro-active solution, not bad in any way.

I do think that 9622 will probably be overrun if there are posts back and forth between the two sites. I mean, I found you guys, and I hardly ever posted in the blue. If I can find you, think of how many others are just waiting for a site like this deep in their psyches, even if they don't know it. I think everyone here knows it's only a matter of time before this place gets a lot of new traffic, but cross-linking doesn't seem a good idea.

I know 9622 is all about the love, and non-cliqueishness is the modus operandi, but I think it is impossible as an outsider to not sense that there is "an in-crowd." You guys have accepted me warmly, but I always feel a bit alien, perhaps because I lurked at the blue so long without saying much. Others may feel the same. You guys are very distinct personalities, both here and there; it is impossible to not recognize the same names coming up over and over again.

Just revel in the glory days, before more interlopers like me come along.

Posted by: readymade on August 23, 2002 01:43 PM

Can't we figure out a new, better way to snub them??

there's gotta be a way... just gotta be...

I especially want the poo.

Please, sir, may I have some more?

Posted by: readymade on August 23, 2002 01:54 PM

Not just warmly, readymade. Let's not mince words here, woman! :)

Posted by: Miguel on August 23, 2002 01:55 PM

ok, here's my take on the whole deal, we do our thing here, they do their thing there. Over there it's self policing, here it's a small cadre of extremely apathetic and lovable admins.

I'm not for linking us on the blue, but the original link to here wasn't from one of our (ir)regulars (at least I don't think so).

so umm yeah..

UncleFes - perhaps when monkeys are mentioned a blasé, world-weary flutter along the lines "Oh not monkeys again. Please - I come here to get away from all that! Life can't all be fun, fun, fun, you know..."

Sort of like treating 9622.net as the forum and the Blue as the foray. ;)

Posted by: Miguel on August 23, 2002 02:00 PM

...no private 9622 jokes...

I have to admit, though, that it always makes me laugh when I see the phrase "unruly boner" on MeFi.

Posted by: pardon me on August 23, 2002 02:01 PM

First it is soo small, that is tiny, what you call it a mynute monkey of little importance, the picture w/ the thread.

monkey see monkey doo
throw some pooo at you *splat* I see monkeys in my mirror...........(per my comment above the Comishs')

Just so I know has the creator of the blue e-mailed 9622 about the monkey business on Meta recently? Or about the recent, Comish comments of this site and or any other shenanigans? See I think he wants things learned, by example not taught by Gestapo. So has a barrier been crossed with MH? I have not mention anything monkey on any of my comments of late in the blue. Besides if I wanted to, I could post all I wanted about my site or this site monkeys on my profile page in the blue profile page, of this monkey. So self-posts are allowed in the right areas. ;P

Posted by: thomcatspike on August 23, 2002 02:03 PM

Thom: what about on your site profile if not then on profiling the blue monkey on profile to be sited then if not besides ok then bongo-sort? Means on the monkey no monkey to blue profile if Matt not then the dong joke kaf profiled next sheilas there?

(I kid because I love!)

Posted by: Miguel on August 23, 2002 02:12 PM

Much like the "unruly boners", "fuck me I'm drubk" is funny even if you don't know the origin.

But I agree, the less overlap, the better.

Curse you, SillyFriday!

Posted by: ColdChef on August 23, 2002 02:12 PM

Also, that thing at the top of the page is no monkey. It's some kind of tribble.

Posted by: ColdChef on August 23, 2002 02:17 PM

I get a static IP through Verve Hosting. Ah, well. Maybe a mirror would work.

i've set up a mirror and a subdomain (so i can still use the domain name). it hasn't kicked in yet on the server side, but i expect it to shortly.

9622.menacedbyelves.com

We'll see if that works--probably on monday, as I don't have commish's work email.

Posted by: tizzie on August 23, 2002 08:59 PM

And for comment #7 -

Jeez, I'm sorry. I just thought it was ironic that I was (and still am) a little upset that (IMO) there's too much posting going on the front page of the 'filter and not enough of it going on over here. No? Well, let's take today, for example. There's one post on 9622, about me. Hmmm.

Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned it (although I don't think that this place is that much of a big secret anyway; at least not to anyone who pays any attention). But regardless, I do apologize for that throwaway comment. It was unnecessary to mention, directly, any goings-on from here, over there, and I agree that should be a "rule", inasmuch as there are such things.

My first comment, though (the one Miguel linked to above) was not an attempt to "blow our cover" or otherwise link the two worlds together, and I still, even after accepting VelvetHellvis' explanation that she was ignorant of monkey-lore prior to making the post, don't think I was out of line in making it. Monkey-shenanigans, after all, were what resulted in the "great schism" in the first place, and resulted in the birth of Monkey Island. That much of MetaFilter history and lore is certainly no big secret, and that's what I was complaining about in my post. I honestly thought that Velvet was having a bit of fun with the monkey-history, and coming so soon as it did after the other two (again, IMO) weak posts, I thought it was more of the same. I could see in my mind another near future of yelling and bitching about too much "hijinks and in-jokes" going on in the blue, and I wanted to nip it in the bud - over there. Velvet, if you're reading over here, I apologize again for reading intent in where there wasn't any. That's my fault, not yours.

Anyway, I do really care about both sites, and all I really want is for them both to be the best that they can be. Sometimes, that want translates into criticism from my end, but I hope it's always taken in the spirit and with the love that it's offered - in both places.

Again, my apologies for any upset.

Continue with the poo flinging. *splat*

I ended up with Gannon and Plummer.

I went with sentimental favorites Sapp, Norman Hand and Gilbert Brown on D. My wife likes them because they're morbidly obese. The all-fatty defense, as we call them.

I also am attempting to trade Elam for Martin Gramatica, for comic relief.

...With Filetopia, I generally jump into the Bookz room if there's anyone there.

I was going to suggest a book adam and then I realized you're not looking for a real book.

Posted by: anathema on August 24, 2002 10:34 AM

Anathema, I pretty much have no choice, living as I do in Korea. I'm a voracious and omnivorous reader, and there are no public libraries, never mind ones that would have any books in English, anywhere accessible. There are some bookstores a couple of hours away by subway where I could buy English books, but they are very very expensive indeed here, and on the very meager salary I get from the university where I teach, that's just not a reasonable option. So I curl up with the laptop when I go to bed rather than with paper books. And yes, it's killing my eyes, but there's a Word plugin that lets you turn textfiles into .lit files for MS Reader in a jiffy, and on XP with Cleartype turned on, it's actually not as bad as you might think.

I realize that the published novelists here (well, OK, Migs) might look askance at my book-stealin' ways, but I've spent untold thousands of dollars on books over the years (and given them all away when I moved on from wherever I was), so I rationalize my piracy away...Also I'd just go loopy otherwise.

I like readymade's slogan too...

Posted by: jpoulos on August 24, 2002 11:38 AM

I'll second the notion that English books in a foreign country are expensive and scarse. Unlike poor Stav, though, Italia has a rockin' system where Italian books are cheap and plentiful (well, excepting any frickin' IT books)

Stav, I've sort of held off on reading Eco for some unfathomable reason. (Instead, I've begun giving myself aneurysms with 19th century italian lit, which sends me scurrying for the dictionary every third word. I'm trying to gird my loins, so to speak, and work my way up to reading Dante's trilogy.) Any particular work by Eco you highly reccommend?

Posted by: romakimmy on August 24, 2002 11:56 AM

I read it on my iPAQ 3675 (i think), and it is great. I thought it would be a pain, but reading on the handheld is great. you can bookmark, jump ahead, do all kinds of stuff, and it is always with me.

i loved rushdie's Fury. i haven't read anything else, but do take a look. i have seen the bookz room, but not that many people in there when i went.

that said, go ahead and recommend anything, i am not opposed to picking up a dead tree version.

i started reading lovecraft on the ebook format, and what can I say? i just like it. no need for a booklight, either!

i must get down to studying now, but do i smell a desert island books thread in our future?

Posted by: adampsyche on August 24, 2002 12:05 PM

Eco's Foucault's Pendulum is probably top of my list, mainly 'cause I love all that Knights Templar-y stuff. But you can't go far wrong with any of his work, including the nonfiction stuff.

Since I'm not privy to the finer details of short bussers, I will defer to you and your much more stylish short bus.

¡Viva el autobús corto!

Am I the only one here who found Murakami's "Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" overly vague, plodding, repetitious, unrewarding, and in desperate need of an editor?

That's what I thought.

Posted by: aydemi on August 24, 2002 02:12 PM

I don't know, never read it, but I would like to.

Posted by: adampsyche on August 24, 2002 03:05 PM

I'm going to be a wet blanket on the whole 'short bus' thing. Yes, there's one in every crowd! I hear the term used a lot, like I hear "retarded" used - ick, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard. To me, it's like 'nigger' - it's not your term to use. I own two "short bussers" - so until you do, leave it. (link to article I wrote in Salon)
No hard feelings?

Posted by: tizzie on August 24, 2002 03:07 PM

I'm terribly sorry tizzie. I read your article, and I understand your complaint. As I'm sure you can guess, there was no malicious intent.... Oddly, I never think of "being on the short bus" as being mentally or physically handicapped (I think of the more colloquial "slow" which is really more of the same, I guess) but that does nothing to excuse the hurt that it inflicts, and clearly has affected you deeply.

You have my heartfelt apologies. I will replace my ad mock-up with my NEW 9622 slogan.

Posted by: readymade on August 24, 2002 03:32 PM

Okay, now it's all confusing up there, with apathetic cats going to Lesbos and being called "short bussers," but my heart's in the right place, I think. Cheers, tizzie.

Posted by: readymade on August 24, 2002 04:06 PM

No problem, readymade - appreciate your kind remarks. It's all in the line of 'raising awareness' - I really don't want to rain on the parade. Thanks!

Am I the only one here who found Murakami's "Wind-Up Bird Chronicle"...

I will say that it's not my favorite of his books, and had a couple of draggy bits, but I still like it very much. No sacred cows here.

I do find it odd you drop your first ever comment and take such a combative tone: "I thought so".

Posted by: kafkaesque on August 24, 2002 06:57 PM

Didn't mean to be combative -- I just meant that I'm used to being in the minority about such things. The book was highly recommended to me by a trusted source, and every review I've read has been pretty glowing. I didn't like it, and I sometimes wonder if I'm the only one. Guess I should have included a :) or something...

Posted by: aydemi on August 24, 2002 07:44 PM

oh shit, i didn't see your comment, tizzie...i deleted the pic from my briefcase, but still i feel awful. no harm intended...

fwiw, whenever i heard the term "short bus," i always envisioned the miscreants and ne'er-do-wells that i was usually stuck with, and not anything else...sorry, no offense intended.

(i really have to read more carefully)

Posted by: adampsyche on August 24, 2002 07:58 PM

No sweat, aydemi.

I definitely see where you could find fault with the book.

Posted by: kafkaesque on August 24, 2002 08:02 PM

In a world where...

I love the trailer for the upcoming Seinfeld movie. Does anyone know whether the guy in the studio is actually the voice behind all the blockbuster trailers?

Posted by: Miguel on August 24, 2002 08:14 PM

Hey, tizzie-hope things are going better re you and your boys. I remember reading that article when it first came out. The monkeys around here mean no harm tho. Sometimes they act like they got into my pills and I have to slap them down, but most of the time-oh, never mind, they're always wacked out. the scary thing is you get used to it.

Posted by: b****fire on August 24, 2002 09:53 PM

My stepson takes the short bus.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 24, 2002 10:28 PM

And I still love your "short bus" designs.

Life is bizarre.

Posted by: readymade on August 25, 2002 12:45 AM

Just when I think I've got this English thing figured out, I find that I'm out of step with the kids of today again.

Ah well. Good thing I did a crappy lupo photoshop instead, I guess (and no I didn't post it, as it really was crappy!)

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on August 25, 2002 12:53 AM

as the person who first brought the short bus concept into the conversation that spawned the idea of the short bus of justice, i would like to clarify that i in no way meant to mock any humans- i simply think short buses are funny. the same way i think semi trucks that don't have a trailer are funny. "look! a truck with no ass!", i exclaim. short buses are amusing to me in the same way. something about their actual appearance is comical.

Posted by: pikachu lolita on August 25, 2002 01:13 AM

Sorry to dredge up the non-monkey code-talk thing again, but - Kafkaesque: All my fretting about back-up QB issues didn't matter after all.

Not that anyone in their right mind is interested, of course.

The area I grew up in was sort of in the boonies, and there weren't that many school-aged kids out there at the time I was going to school. It would have been pointless to have a big, 80-kid bus shunting 10 kids back and forth to town every day, so yeah... I'll admit it: I rode a "short bus". So what about if we all just pretend we're country hicks, like I am was? (heh...)

Seriousy though... tizzie, I agree - it sucks that it has so many negative connotations; I'm glad that you brought it up, though (you know, the more I read & interact on this site, the more I am impressed with my fellow 9622-ers).

I vote we start focussing on developing the oft-spoken-of Hedonism Club! Cookie-dough for everybody!!
