August 24, 2002 : Fun with Mucilage

This guy seems to have some time and materials on his hands and an odd but delightful hobby and there's a simian among his menagerie. Corny, yes, but just what the doctor ordered for this tired chimp.

Posted by jonmc at August 24, 2002 10:41 PM

People have said these things about that :

Yeah, but as the guy says, jon: it's hard to form lasting relationships with such crudely constructed animals

And yet we do and manage just fine, right?

McNally - your CD may be the opposite of everything I've ever liked but your notes are a masterpiece. I found if I read them first, I almost like the music. At least I appreciate what I've been missing. :)

Posted by: Miguel on August 24, 2002 10:50 PM

Thanks Migs...

So What the hell are Os Mutantes singing in "Top Top?"

Given your political history, I figured the Plastic People would be right up your alley, man...

Posted by: jonmc on August 24, 2002 10:56 PM

Oh yeah! And I will say your mix was:

1)The most versatile (it jumped!)

2)The most unpredictable

3)The most eclectic

4)The most good-hearted in an Irish/Jewish way

5)The most obviously knowledgeable in that difficult "History of Rock and Pop Music" way.

Oh I give up - yes, I liked it!

Posted by: Miguel on August 24, 2002 11:30 PM

The Mutantes track is incomprehensible - about sabotage and shit. I can't understand more than the odd word or two. In other words, you're not missing anything lyric-wise, believe me. :)

I want a jonmc mix. (hey, my whining got me a promised (but not yet delivered) mix from dong_reson detre)

Posted by: adampsyche on August 25, 2002 12:00 AM

jonmc-what a brilliant post! I love how crappy, dead-end jobs result in such great, bizarre detritus. Some of my best graphics were created when I had been relegated to the equivalent of an equipment/server room (it was in actuality a closet in a former incarnation) and everyone forgot that I was still employed there as a graphics/video tech. I had plenty of free time, no respect, and loathing galore. I got paid to f*ck off most of the time because my co-workers didn't remember where I was or what I did. The rest of the time I was abused by higher-ups who couldn't remember what my job title was or that I had been "promoted."

I love how contempt breeds good art...

adam--email me a mailing address and give a couple days to get some blanks, that last batch wiped me out.

Posted by: jonmc on August 25, 2002 01:25 AM

What a great link! How fun. Thanks jonmc.

Migel, if Enemy Within's sweeping shred era gee-tar arpeggios don't make you sign the devil with both fists and pine for a mullet, well, then you simply don't drink enough.

My mix didn't reach you yet, adampsyche? I sent out two others that day, and they've both arrived by now. If it doesn't show up by tuesday, email me and I'll send you another.

Anyone else want one?
After all, I'm sending them out like mother#@*!ing frisbees over here.*

Speaking of mixes, I just got jpolous' falling in/ falling out mix, and it's a perfect collection of tunes, and getting me to say that about a mix containing the Counting Crows is a Sisyphean task, at the very least.

*The irritation is false, but the offer is real.
Reciprocal mixes appreciated but not nessecary .

Posted by: dong resin on August 25, 2002 04:14 AM

Man, everyone disses the Crows.

Britt: we're all alone, babe.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 25, 2002 11:14 AM

I don't hate Counting Crows because they are beautiful. I love 'Anna Begins'.
And those little blue sculptures are excellent. Did you see the clay heads that Jeff Bridges makes?

Posted by: tizzie on August 25, 2002 01:30 PM

"Anna Begins" is badass. "August and Everything After" is a heart-wrenching album.

But everything after that has been pretty lame and they really, really suck live.

Posted by: brittney on August 25, 2002 02:33 PM

Anna Begins
My friend assures me "it's all or nothing"
I am not worried
I am not overly concerned
My friend implores me "for one time only, make an exception"
I am not worried
Wrap her up in a package of lies
Send her off to a coconut island
I am not worried
I am not overly concerned
With the status of my emotions
"oh" she says "you're changing"
But we're always changing
It does not bother me to say
This isn't love
Because if you don't want to talk about it then it isn't love
And I guess I'm gonna have to live with that but I'm sure
There's something in a shade of grey
Something in between
And i can always change my name if that's what you mean...

My friend assures me "it's all or nothing"
But I am not really worried
I am not overly concerned
You try to tell yourself the things you try to tell yourself to make yourself forget
To make yourself forget
I am not worried
"if it's love" she said "then we're gonna have to think about the consequences"
And she can't stop shaking
I can't stop touching her and...

This time, when kindness fall like rain
It washes her away
And Anna begins to change her mind
"these seconds when I'm shaking leave me shuddering for days" she says
And I'm not ready for this sort of thing

But I'm not gonna break
And I'm not gonna worry about it anymore
And I'm not gonna bend and I'm not going to break
And I'm not gonna worry about it anymore
It seems like I should say "as long as this is love"
But it's not all that easy
So maybe I should
Snap her up in a butterfly net
Pin her down on a photograph album
I am not worried
I've done this sort of thing before
But then I start to think about the consequences
Because I don't get no sleep in a quiet room and

This time, when kindness falls like rain
It washes me away
And Anna begins to change my mind
And everytime she sneezes I believe it's love
And oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing

She's talking in her sleep
It's keeping me awake
And Anna begins to toss and turn
And every word is nosense but I understand
And oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing

Her kindness bangs a gong
It's moving me along
And Anna begins to fade away
It's chasing me away, she disappears and
Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing

I promised that I'd never disrespect someones personal taste in music, since we all need something to get us through the night.

So I'll just say that if you like Counting Crows, you'll love these excellent albums.

This concludes my daily dose of pedantry.

Posted by: jonmc on August 25, 2002 04:24 PM

Actually, I have heard of that guy Dylan, despite the fact that I own five counting crows records. And I think my father used to have a Van Morrison album. IMO, they were much better after David Lee Roth joined.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 25, 2002 04:59 PM

Every time you say Dylan
He thinks you're talkin about Dylan Thomas
Whoever he was.
The man ain't got no culture.
But that's alright, ma
Everybody must get stoned.

Musical snobbery is like farts in the wind. The soapbox stander ends up sounding like a tool, or didactic fool.

Posted by: kafkaesque on August 25, 2002 05:12 PM

*looks up "didactic"*

*is mortified*

*shuts up*

Posted by: jonmc on August 25, 2002 06:41 PM

No offense intended, Mr Jon.

Posted by: kafkaesque on August 25, 2002 07:00 PM

jon, i accept your point! Blood on the Tracks is a superior album, but I try to keep my mind open to the stuff that the kids like, too. *grin*

brittney - thanks!

Posted by: tizzie on August 25, 2002 08:44 PM

Oh, and Britt, Recovering the Satellites is better than the first record. After that, though, I agree they took a sharp left toward Lameness.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 26, 2002 12:16 AM

Short trip.

Posted by: dong resin on August 26, 2002 09:18 AM

Hahaha! Dong resin, thank you for making coffee come out of my nose!

Posted by: tizzie on August 26, 2002 09:26 AM

That's how I make the zero dollars, tizzie.

Posted by: dong resin on August 26, 2002 09:35 AM

It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.

Posted by: tizzie on August 26, 2002 09:38 AM

i love both august & everything after and recovering the satellites. i didn't get the one after that (this desert life? is that right?) and i just bought hard candy and have only listened to it a bit, so i don't have a lordly opinion on it yet.

long december is a beautiful song.

i think some people can't stand adam duritz's voice, but i love it.

Posted by: witchstone on August 26, 2002 10:33 AM

I can't stand adam duritz's pulse.

Posted by: dong resin on August 26, 2002 10:37 AM

I'm just sayin'.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 26, 2002 11:18 AM

brittney, you ignorant slut...

Posted by: dong resin on August 26, 2002 11:20 AM

Yes, dear and it's all your fault. I liked your father a good deal until he knocked me up with your sorry ass.

Posted by: Lupo's Mom on August 26, 2002 11:22 AM

Let's see how that goes over at your Bridge Club.

Posted by: Not Really Gay Lupo on August 26, 2002 11:57 AM

Let's see how that goes over at your Bridge Club.
Hey, we're cool with that. You don't think we wear these assless chaps just to play cards, do ya? And you thought "Go Fish" was just a kids' game.

Posted by: The Bridge Club on August 26, 2002 11:59 AM

Assless chaps and Abe Vigoda masks for all!

Posted by: kafkaesque on August 26, 2002 12:22 PM

Assless chaps and Abe Vigoda masks

I think I'm going to have to go and lie down now.
Or go look at the goat sex picture again.

What, no Bea Arthur masks? Dammit.

Why not join in and say something too?
