September 01, 2002 : I Pagliacci

Some say Caruso defined the role of Canio, others would say Mario Lanza or even Placido Domingo.

They are all wrong. None could hold a candle to Mr. Winkie:

People have said these things about that :

I held a candle to a monkey once. It screeched like hell and tried to claw one of my eyes out.

Now, I just make birthday cakes for sloths.

This post reminded me for some unknown reason of this story from today's sports pages. When I first read it I thought the horse's name was "Zippy Chimp" and I filed it away in the grey matter for a post to 9622; alas, the losingest horse in history is actually named "Zippy Chippy", so he only ranks a comment within another post.

Isn't that a nice little story? Let's give the Commish a big hand, people!

* crickets *

Hel-LO???

Ah, fuck me, I'm - oh, you know the rest.

::total tangent::

The commish just got me thinking. Does anybody else remember a Little Golden Book called "Zippy" about a chimp of the same name who did cute shit like ride a tricycle in overalls and drink juice from a cup?

I distinctly remember this. But then again, I'm probably crazy? But does anyone else share this memory/delusion?

jonmc, not only do I recall said chimp, but my younger brother's nickname was Zippy all throughout childhood because he actually carried a stuffed version of that monkey until he was about seven years old.

Of course, now my brother and I don't speak with each other, but I'm sure that had nothing to do with it.

Crash,
I've been searching for traces of that book for decades! You rock my world!

Posted by: jonmc on September 2, 2002 12:07 AM

I was just about to post that...har! I came across some for sale on eBay, here.

Posted by: gummi on September 2, 2002 12:12 AM

Funny you should mention EBay, gummi. This is identical to the monkey my brother dragged all over creation. For all I know, it could even be his.

Man I googled my ass off searching for Zippy and came up empty, you two clobber me into seconds, my Google-Fu must be slipping.

But I dont care cos it's a Zippy Palooza!
Zippy as far as the eye can see! Oh I'm so happy!

*tears of joy*

But the real question is:

Can Mr. Winkie do Petrushka better than Nijinsky?

Posted by: romakimmy on September 2, 2002 03:40 PM

No kimmy the real question is can he do a better "Mannish Boy" than Muddy Waters?

Posted by: jonmc on September 2, 2002 08:59 PM

no one can, jon

Why not join in and say something too?
