September 25, 2002 : The monkeys I understand, but a nose?

People have said these things about that :

Well, Gogol's story The Nose is one of the famous of all Russian literature and bureaucrats are monkeys of sorts, so it makes sense in a senselessly Russian kind of way. Or not!

Posted by: Miguel on September 25, 2002 09:35 PM

Perhaps the nose can pick up it's own scent and lead us to the culprits...

Here I crash headlong into one of the gaps in my cultural literacy - I had not heard of Gogol's nose (maybe that should be Gogol's "Nose"), and always thought that the disembodied noses that somtimes pop up (ha!) in fiction all trace back to Sleeper.

He launches a search and is perturbed when the nose turns out to enjoy a higher civil ranking than he.
I can relate.

Obviously the nose (like mine) is running.

Posted by: b****fire on September 25, 2002 11:32 PM

Ah, those whimsical Russians... ;)

The Nose is indeed a great story. The outraged owner seeing his nose out in high society. Classic.
What's that other Gogol story with the talking dogs?

Because I'm nothing if not community-minded, I've uploaded a copy of Gogol's Dead Souls to the PiliFili here, for those of you who are members...(and I am still working on the Canonical Desert Island Thread List, sorta, honest).

He's a wonderchicken! So many ebooks!

So the Nose
is stuck up
to the owner.
It's running
around St. Perters
with monkey boogalars.
I sure hope the Nose
turns up with
the little monkeys,
warm and dry.

I'm having flashbacks to Steve Martin's short story "Dogs In My Nose". Anyone else remember that?

Posted by: kafkaesque on September 26, 2002 11:58 AM

I first read as, "DigsDogsIn My Nose" Sorry Steve, not with your finger.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on September 26, 2002 12:17 PM

Wait, is this like the NoZe? (read title tag, then click link and laugh).

Eep! It ate my post. Bad server!
Here it is again, *sigh*
And, b/c I know you're all lazy bastards, here is the newest Rope online, and a sample ad, to tease and tittilate.

I saw a band called Gogol Bordello last weekend. They're like an East European Pogues and a lot of fun, but be wary of drubken cossack dancing, unless you are a cossack.

Why has no one mentioned how FUCKING HORRIFYING the monkey in that picture looks. I mean, shit, I once had a dream that things like that were living under my skin.

sorry to interupt the thread,Did Cold Chef weather out the hurricane,? If in another thread, then please direct. back to your program.
Ps, Kaf your burning up in Southern Cal, I saw the fires, and the Santa Anna winds, they suck.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on September 26, 2002 03:20 PM

I also had a dream that monkeys like that were living under Lupo's skin. It was terrible. There was no rent control and prices were skyrocketing. Then, the garbage men went on strike.

Posted by: kafkaesque on September 26, 2002 03:28 PM

Here come those Santa Anna winds again
We'll jog with show folk on the sand
Drink kirschwasser from a shell
San Francisco Show and Tell
Well I should know by now
Like a Sunday in T.J.
That it's cheap but it's not free
That I'm not what I used to be
And that love's not a game for three

It's true though, Thomcat. The air is thicker than usual, and I could see a demonic-type smoke cloud in the hills the other day.
Grievous things are indeed afoot.

Posted by: kafkaesque on September 26, 2002 04:20 PM

I don't care if they seemed really happy, this is not cool.

Posted by: anathema on September 26, 2002 06:04 PM

Shit anathema. That sucks (for the monkeys, I assume you mean, the kids can do it to themselves all they want). Three times a day for how long? The day after coming down off of x is bad enough, but to do it every morning, only to start rolling again? That's horrible.

Why not join in and say something too?

A note about posting images:

We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found here. Thanks.
