OK kids. Sorry about the delay on getting the emails out to you on the swap dealio, but I've been having email issues.
I'll be finalizing the lists as soon as I hear back from the people whose addresses I don't have (PardonPronoun, and Ufez). For the record, it's not their fault.

People have said these things about that :

Possibly a really dumb Question:
I've made a lot of cds from mp3 files, and I pretty much understand that. But if I have a store-bought cd, how do I save tracks from it as mp3s to use on compilations? I usually use winamp to play music, and there's no "save as" option that I can see.
ps. tj - the lists look great. I'm proud to be a Zero ;)

Posted by: tizzie on October 6, 2002 04:05 PM

tizzie - you have to "rip" mp3s from your cds using special software. One that I use, which is easy & free, is CDex, but there are others as well - suggestions, anyone?

Posted by: scribblative on October 6, 2002 04:09 PM

And tj said we are all just prisoners here of our own device... ;)

Posted by: Miguel on October 6, 2002 06:42 PM

Tizzie, you need a program that both rips (reads the music files on existing cds and converts them into mp3 files on your hard drive) and burns (reads the mp3 files on your hard drive and writes them as regular music files on new cds). MusicMatch Jukebox does both just dandy, and it's free. You don't need to bother upgrading to the pay-for version, although they will keep pestering you to do so.

Posted by: yhbc on October 6, 2002 06:48 PM

Um, gang, I'm sorry...but I'll have to bail on the CD swap this time. A tragic dog meets CD burner incident has occurred...and a new CD burner isn't in the budget right now. (Baby clothes...you'd not believe how expensive those things are.)
I'm really bummed out about it, but with the due date sneaking up on me and the running around like a mad monkey trying to get the nursery ready and the house prepared for the invasion of the Mothers, I just don't see having time to budget a new burner, take my system apart and install a it. Especially since I made the fatal error of buying a Dell...and installing anything in them is a Faustian nightmare.
Drats, I was really looking forward to it too...I've even been working on a cover design for a while. Hmmm...maybe I'll just finish that, then post it and you guys can use it. :)

Posted by: dejah420 on October 6, 2002 06:49 PM

sad day, dejah.
tj - great work, but I'm gonna have to request some switcherooniness... ColdChef and I were in the same group last time, and I traded with p-lo in the MefiSwap, so it'd be swell if there was something you could do...
not that their music wasn't fabulous, but i like to get around, if you know what i mean...

Posted by: Marquis on October 6, 2002 07:02 PM

Marquis is trying to ingratiate himself into the Classic Rock Anthems group...

Posted by: Miguel on October 6, 2002 07:14 PM

I think I'm getting performance anxiety. How can I possibly make a decent mix for both a "dong" and an "ichthyophile?"

Posted by: readymade on October 6, 2002 08:15 PM

you think you've got problems?
well. you do.
my musical tastes are so fucking esoteric, that it's going to be practically impossible to please me, much less make me laugh, particularly since i'm rather down at the moment, having just lost 36 dollars at the track (a penance, really, compared to my friend who squandered $120, and also got shit on by a bird -- which happened just before the 7th, and really made it all worth it, actually; fortunately i'm young enough yet that i can laugh long and hard at such things. and others: a kid jumped into a idling golf cart and drove it into the BBQ stand. that ruled too, although i suspect it was rather a poor omen for winning money.)
also: i'm still threatening people with "CUTEST CD EVAR", and guess what -- i just found this fantastic track from the mid-60s haze by Clover called "Ice Cream Man" that has english kids singing about strawberries and chocolate.
so yes, yes, my fine readymade friend, you've got troubles (but no gull guano, so hey, chalk one up in the plus column).

Posted by: fishfucker on October 6, 2002 08:45 PM

Great work, TJ, thanks for all your efforts. Gee, Dejah, sorry to hear your dog ate your CD burner--bad dog! bad!

Posted by: octobersurprise on October 6, 2002 08:56 PM

Oh how I wish I could send you people some music. and if I could oh how I wish you could see your faces when you heard it.

Posted by: b****fire on October 6, 2002 09:12 PM

Heh, no...she didn't eat it...I was burning a Blue Man CD for my car and when I took the disk out, I left the tray out...and for some reason, my computer doesn't suck it back into it's spot if it's left out...anyway, Osa, (who is a very large chow/lab mix) came bounding into my office to show me her latest icky bone from the backyard and when she ran into the tray, it cracked it and pushed it off to the side...I made the mistake of trying to push it back into it's spot...and now the tray won't come out again.
Sigh...the perils of being careless around big dogs. :)

Posted by: dejah420 on October 6, 2002 09:39 PM

I promise that there will be no gull guano on my mix. I cannot vouch that there will not be, in your estimation, some sort of 'shite' on it. But thems the breaks, I guess...*starts furiously looking at mix to see how "esoteric" it is*
Crap.

Posted by: readymade on October 6, 2002 11:28 PM

If I might offer the likely too earnest advice of the veteran of exactly one of these swaps to any newbies facing pre-trade jitters, I'd say mix only to amuse yourself. This is more about a peek into each other's persona than about individual songs or being hip.
Also, yours may be the only mix that you like.
Now, neverminding all of that magnanimous turdhurl above, I pity you suckers in Jonmc's group.
What are going to do, kids, introduce him to something new?
bwuhahahahaha!
You're fucked.
Happy trails, buckaroos.

Posted by: dong_resin on October 6, 2002 11:34 PM

Oh but has jonmc ever heard Bob Lind's Elusive Butterfly?

Posted by: Miguel on October 6, 2002 11:41 PM

Mr. McNally, I want you to listen to each of the following questions and give them your full attention before you answer. Please remember that you are under oath.
Now, you participated in a "cd swap" with your little friends on 9622.net a few months ago, did you not?
(witness replies in the affirmative)
And one of those cds you received came from a person known to you as "yhbc", did it not?
(witness replies in the affirmative)
Did you listen to that cd in your car?
(witness replies in the affirmative)
Did the music eventually progress to a little ditty by a group performing under the name of "Throat Culture", and entitled "Easter Island Head"?
(witness replies in the affirmative)
And when that song came on in your car, was that the very first time that you, personally, had heard that particular song? And further, upon hearing said song, did you not spontaneously begin to laugh, in public, mind you, in appreciation of said song? I remind you, Mr. McNally, that you are not only under oath, but are also subject to being impeached by prior evidence preserved on the so-called "weblogs" you and your little friends propagate on this so-called "internet"?
...
I rest my case, your honor.

Posted by: yhbc on October 6, 2002 11:50 PM

Oh, I like that Easter Island Head song, too.
I heard it on that Garrison Keillor show a while back. Funny stuff.

Posted by: dong_resin on October 6, 2002 11:58 PM

The song was funny, rather, not A Prairie Home Companion.
I wasn't that drunk.

Posted by: dong_resin on October 7, 2002 12:01 AM

Don't be silly, Miguel.
But have you heard Tony Bennet's amazing take on the Beatles? or Mae West's? Or the acid-fried big band crooning of Arcesia?
Well, you have now. :)

Hope y'all like Italian cheese with a sprinkling of Arabic pop and mebbee a dash of Argentinian (have to finish listening to the cd first). I think the only song(s) on there in English will be a cover a friend of mine here did for a demo.
Singing along to languages one doesn't know is a hobby of mine...

Posted by: romakimmy on October 7, 2002 12:21 PM

I ain't got no meowing cats records, roma-k, but I do(no shit) have several records which feature barking dogs. We should keep 'em seperated otherwise they'd chase eachother.

Posted by: jonmc on October 7, 2002 12:26 PM

OT-
Speaking of all things weird in music, about two years ago I was in Budapest and our hosts took us out to a local discopub where they asssured us we would have a rollicking good time. I shit you not, all of the MTV top 40 had been 'dubbed' into Hungarian and the patrons were literally bouncing off of walls and each other in a surreal type of pop moshing. I am still kicking myself for not hunting down the dubbed copy of 'Oops I Did It Again,' if only for the pure schlock value.

Posted by: romakimmy on October 7, 2002 12:54 PM

FWIW, I use MusicMatch to burn CDs and it seems to work great. The volume leveling is probably the best feature so that tracks sound consistently at the same volume regardless of quality. Just a plug for a nice piece of software. I popped for the $19.95 full version but I believe the demo version does the same as mentioned earlier in the thread.

Posted by: KevinSkomsvold on October 7, 2002 02:21 PM

Question: Is there any way to rip an album?
I'm old (hikes up pants) and most of my favorite stuff is on vinyl. Is there was a to route a stereo signal to a laptop from a turntable through a receiver?

Posted by: Unclefes on October 7, 2002 02:30 PM

Fes, do you have a "line in" on your soundcard? a little jack hole that allows external sound, such as a microphone in (although mic in jacks are usually mono)?
If you do, you can simply record the track as you would using a tape recorder with the aforementioned musicmatch, by simply plugging your turntable/receiver into your laptop with a stereo cable.
Also, rommakimmy, the description of your mix sounds sweet.
I'm not too familiar with Italian cheese, but do enjoy a little indian pop.
My own disc will feature a bit of french rap and some Angélique Kidjo who sings pop songs in some West African tongue, which is not nearly as off-putting as it sounds.

Posted by: tj on October 7, 2002 03:30 PM

do you have a "line in" on your soundcard? a little jack hole that allows external sound, such as a microphone in (although mic in jacks are usually mono)?
I do, but I'm worried about the mono aspect. I have dual plugs coming out, and I wondered whether there was a specialty cable that maybe went into a USB or serial port, that could maintain the stereo signal...?

Posted by: Unclefes on October 7, 2002 03:35 PM

two great tastes that taste great together?

Posted by: tj on October 7, 2002 03:40 PM

Fes, is it a mic jack or a line in jack?
if it's line, it's most likely stereo.
I don't know about usb or serial cables for audio.
Group one is now to be known as the "splooge group".

Posted by: dong_resin on October 7, 2002 03:57 PM

Right on, thanks again, tj.
And is group 4 simply going to be known as "Jonmc and four others that aren't jonmc?"

Posted by: Ufez Jones on October 7, 2002 04:04 PM

I like "splooge." I really feel as though I'm part of something special now.
[When you put dong_resin and fishfucker's together, you get an amberglow. I don't know if it's a readymade, but I heard a concussive crash that came from roma indicating it was good none-the-less.]

Posted by: readymade on October 7, 2002 04:12 PM

There is a question mark after my name on the group list. I have been wondering about this. Should I be nervous?

Posted by: twos on October 7, 2002 04:23 PM

a sprinkling of Arabic pop
Dude, Daler. Dude.

Posted by: jpoulos on October 7, 2002 04:43 PM

With eye fuzzing from screen fatigue and too much Chinese grappa at dinner, I read the new monkier for group 1 as "spooge". So are we Sploogers, Sploogians, or Sploogites?
I'm off to (freeze my ass off in) Brugges 'till the 17th, but upon my return will be frentically burning and ripping to ensure I make the deadline. *throws slightly tipsy baci in general direction of all monkey brethren and sneaks a couple o' bum pinches in on the Sploogers*

Posted by: romakimmy on October 7, 2002 05:39 PM

I like it that it's a "monkier" rather than a "moniker." That's appropriate somehow.

twos-- you're cool that's a remenant from doing the list, wasn't sure which group to put you in.
I'm pushing everything back another week until we get who's in and more importantly, who's dropping out all set. I don't want to see anyone get hosed (unless, ya know they WANT to).

So why can't we copy and paste (unless we're in preview)?

what browsers are y'all using?

Posted by: jpoulos on October 8, 2002 01:32 PM

IE 5.1.3 (mac).
Indeed, I can't copy/paste from the thread directly, but have to preview first. Kooky.
Get thee posted, ye scoudrel server!

Posted by: readymade on October 8, 2002 01:36 PM

click three times. Not only will that enable you to cut and paste, but it will get you back to Kansas.

Posted by: b****fire on October 8, 2002 01:39 PM

I think we've discussed this before, haven't we? You can click-click-click to highlight the text, but you can't right-click to get a menu without making the highlighting go away. Oh, and the triple-click method highlights the whole paragraph. Double-clicking only highlights a single word.
The workaround I've been using is to triple-click, then go to the toolbar on IE and select Edit/Copy, then paste the whole paragraph into the comments box and delete the parts I don't need.
That's with IE6.0.2800.1106 on Win98SE, btw.

Posted by: Crash on October 8, 2002 02:07 PM

Crash, I'm using the same setup as you and that triple-click thing works, thanks. Quick tip: ctrl-c to copy and ctrl-c to paste. Avoids the whole menu trip ...

Posted by: walrus on October 8, 2002 02:10 PM

Alrighty--all you pc-ers have yer wacky right/left clicks, but as a mac user, I do the click-and-drag....I don't even have a mouse since I'm on a laptop, so I'm screwed.
The funny thing is, now I can't copy/paste at MeFi either, except (and this is really weird) in the sidebar. But I can copy/paste on MeTa. I asked my husband to confirm these anomolies, which he did on his own computer. It's not a terrible thing--slightly annoying perhaps, but not impossible to live with. *must remember that I am a part of the fringe population with the mac, and therefore must pay penance for going against the grain*

Posted by: readymade on October 8, 2002 02:38 PM

Re-set the trackpad to behave like a mouse with the clickin' and the draggin' so I can highlight a word or a line, but no paragraph.

Yeah, until they get MS-textDRM in place, then they can charge us for owning them too. And seeing them on the screen!

Ok I'm sure this is really interesting by now, but I have divined that it's something to do with the hack for the content div. There's no such hack on the preview page, which is single column.
There are two alternatives to that hack which you might try, but someone better email me about it cuz this is just too damn technical for a CD swap thread.

do tell, my tusky brother.

I'm going to play with the html files a bit, and email you later or tomorrow. If I can get it to work, it will save me the effort of explaining two or three ideas, when it might all end up quite simple. Course, I might not be able to fix it either ;-)

I almost wonder if this isn't a bug but a feature.
But it would only be a "feature" for this site. I can filch whatever content I want from the New York Times.....Not saying that the content here isn't far worthier of filching.

9622.net:content far worthier of filching.

I am perhaps a bit too pleased to be one of the Red Assed Baboons.
Mostly because it says "assed".

Posted by: dong_resin on October 9, 2002 11:08 PM

Me, too. I think any organization with "assed" in its name is splendid. Plus I get to send stuff to/receive stuff from Europe, which is probably as close as I will ever get to going there myself, so I will now have the chance to live vicariously through FedEx.

jp your spamtraps are rejecting my mail. Of course, this may be intentional ...
The solution I sent you won't work in Opera, apart from the other slight things wrong with it, so I'll keep looking. Starting to wonder if there even *is* a good solution ...

Posted by: walrus on October 10, 2002 11:59 AM

Ah, I keep forgetting about the spamtraps. My boss unilaterally decided to block all hotmail from entering this company. it was a very unpopular decision, but he is a very stubborn man.
regardless, though, i still got your email. my 9622.net address forwards to both my home and work accounts.
anyway, i haven't had a second to look at what you sent me, but i plan to mess around with it this afternoon. your help is very much appreciated.

As a lemur, let me just say, please consider me as a possible corporate symbol or mascot suitable and fine for any professional or semi-professional sport team.
Thanks, TJ.

Why not join in and say something too?

A note about posting images:
