Help me pick a movie!

I can't decide what to go see this evening, so perhaps you have a suggestion.
Just view the options presented and pick your recommendation.
Thanks, monkeys!
one hour photo was pretty good. about five minutes into the film you forget that you're watching robin williams, which is a plus.
i'd probably see magaret cho. i ♥ notorious c.h.o.

I've not seen any of those, and it's a shame that Igby Goes Down isn't on your list, b/c I higly recommend that one. If it were me, I'd go for 24 hour party people, (not sure i'd watch red dragon alone) but like I said I've not seen any of those.
Posted by: Ufez Jones on October 9, 2002 05:05 PMOh, and this weekend I'll be seeing The Secretary and Spirited Away.
Yay!
red dragon scared the living shit out of me. i wasn't old enough to see silence of the lambs when it was on a big screen, and so i underestimated the scariness of this movie. like, "well, silence of the lambs was scary, but not like total freakout scary".
as a result of this miscalculation, i got to be the total loser that actually *screamed* at one point. i hate being such a pussy.
one hour photo was pretty good. it made me uncomfortable watching it, which is usually a good thing. it was a very very pretty movie though. really great color and cinemetography and all that.
Great, watch--Red Dragon will be the winner and I'll feel obligated to go see it after this whole production I've concocted, and I'll have nightmares for weeks.
I never considered it would be too scary to see by myself.
I too am a pussy.
If it wuz me, I'd see Miss Cho, but Red Dragon is not bad. It's worth it, if only for Emily Watson. I didn't really care for Nortonpal in it, but that's just me.
Oh, and it's got Phillip Seymour Hoffman in it. Yeah, you should see Red Dragon.
We expect a review.
Red Dragon is going to be on in the cinema for weeks. You should see one of the "last chance" choices.
[/voice of reason]
Spirited Away was AMAZING! Don't miss it.
I saw Heaven last night (Cate Blanchett, Giovanni Ribisi, Directed by Tom Tywker who did Run, Lola, Run) and that was great too. Intense, romantic, tragic, beautiful.

I don't get to see movies at the theater, so I'd recommend you do what I do. If you haven't already bought it, buy Bull Durham, put it in the DVD player, make a big bowl of popcorn, sit down on the couch and fall asleep before the opening credits are finished.
Posted by: Crash on October 9, 2002 05:30 PMOoh. New Tom Tywker. I'll have to see that, Gen. I really dug Winter Sleepers. It really resonated with me.
Posted by: kafkaesque on October 9, 2002 05:35 PMI want to go see what the people pick and will probably write a proper review of whatever is chosen...but should I count votes not shown in the poll (for instance, comments--not actual votes)?
This is the What to Think Network.
I say you go rent that Kirk Cameron apocalypse movie.
Posted by: kafkaesque on October 9, 2002 05:37 PMKirk Cameron appearing in a movie is one of the signs of the Apocalypse.
Posted by: Crash on October 9, 2002 05:51 PMI've got This Island Earth, Eegah! and Manos The Hand of Fate MST3K dvds. Let's party.
Posted by: eyeballkid on October 9, 2002 05:59 PMRed Dragon is winning, which is disappointing, which also means I should have picked my own damn movie.
Posted by: brittney on October 9, 2002 06:05 PM24-Hour Party People doesn't have much of a story, but is fun if you're into the '80s English music scene and watching floppy Brits with funny accents running around all fucked up. I enjoyed it, but I was there at the time and am probably too close to the subject matter to be a good judge of the movie.
Posted by: liam on October 9, 2002 06:05 PMI have the last two. And Pod People. Only on VHS though.
Fast, Cheap and Out of Control just came in from Netflix. Whee.
All I can say there is don't do 24 Hour Party People ... definitely a straight to video option, if you bother.
Posted by: walrus on October 9, 2002 06:18 PMWhat I should say there, is that it's not exactly a bad film ... more interesting for the subject matter than the slightly tired acting, but definitely not for the big screen.
Posted by: walrus on October 9, 2002 06:20 PMOh, and I decided to go strictly by poll results, so be sure to cast your vote officially.
Or don't, as I am not the boss of you.
Brittany by your own words, Red Dragon - I *heart* Ed Norton.
It may be too scary by yourself, but I'm a chicken too. One-hour photo, I keep seeing advertisements for it so I'm not sure. Flip a coin.
Go for the red dragon, I dare you.
I voted for CHO. Kafkaesque made a good point about catching a flick that may disappear soon.
Watch out for lighthearted lesbians at the theater, though.
Why isn't The Tuxedo on the list?
Are we too good to enjoy that nice Jackie Chan? He works so hard.
Also, I realize I'm in the minority here, but I find marget cho incredibly self-obsessed and not funny, and worse, one of those fat women who want you to believe that being heavy is some sort of statement of self, and that she didn't just end up that way through pop-tarts and apathy.
It's true. You should have had one terrible movie on the list, to make it more fun.
Has anyone here ever read The Dice Man? It's about a guy who decides to make every decision based upon the roll of a dice, and eventually founds a cult/religion type thing based on randomness. Neat book, if a little 70s.
I used to do that kaf, but I was a 15th level paladin with the Sword of Inequity.
Posted by: eyeballkid on October 9, 2002 07:45 PMHeh. Yeah I thought about that after I mentioned the book. This guy was strictly 1d6 though. [/painful geekiness]

i'm inclined to agree -- i saw this (24 hour party people) last weekend (and actually, uh, have some questions for miguel about it -- what the?) and it really is meant for the small screen (particularly if you occasionally have trouble deciphering the english accent -- i found myself wanting a rewind button at particular points). there's nearly no cinematic shots to the whole film, and uh, yeah, go for the video: you're not missing much (it *is* a film worth seeing, though the "historical re-enactment" style makes things often confusing -- there seem to be big gaps in the timeline).
that said, i've been on a herzog kick lately --within the last week i've watched: Aguirre, Nosferatu, Invincible, Fitzcarraldo and Heart of Glass (roughly in that order).
(they have a herzog rack at my local video store (which is endearingly "punk" -- racks of zines, free rentals of local artists, front door covered with flyers for rock shows), so i'm working my way through.)
Anyhow: Invincible (don't read the summary if you're planning on seeing it -- just go.) is the new herzog flick -- just now in theatres here (san francisco), and i highly recommend it if you can find it playing anywhere. great film: a little on the sappy side, so see it maybe when you're hungover (as i was), but -- beautiful film.

I saw Heaven last night...
Oh no, he's gonna tell us about his near-death experience..
I was gonna post this on the blue page, but I thought it was a little too whiney to put over there, so I'm going to put it here 'cause I know you're all my pals and will support me in my whininess:
The creators of Puppetry of the Penis will be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this evening,
just not in Utah. This follows a pattern of the LDS church-owned NBC affiliate being unwilling to broadcast material the church finds objectionable.
Are you upset that Utah doesn't get penis puppetry? You could take a marker and draw a smiley face on your helmet if you really need to see a meat muppet.
Posted by: MarsCrash on October 9, 2002 10:24 PMWell, you could have some out of state buddy tape it and mail it to you and you'd have a nifty bootleg video to pedle out of your greasy trenchcoat to the local youth, or you could go to the nearest public park and recreate it live and in person.
Expect all kinds of incoherence from me this evening. Something major is happening in the morning and I'm all antsy. I'd tell ya more but I don't wanna jinx things.
I have, on three separate occasions, on three separate weekends in fact, seen Margaret Cho riding an antique-y looking bicycle down Commercial Street in Provincetown, MA.
Thank you.
Also, I feel terrible that I've been out all night and missed the voting. Red Dragon won by a single vote and I totally would have swung it the other way. I would have taken a secret thrill in knowing that I decided what Britt did tonight.
Posted by: jpoulos on October 9, 2002 10:45 PMYou could decide what I do tonight! Stay in and put the finishing touches on the monkey mix, or go to a club where my friend is performing? A note about the performer, she ended up on the mix cd, so I guess that either way I'll be involved in six degrees of monkey.
Posted by: readymade on October 9, 2002 10:56 PM"Expect all kinds of incoherence from me this evening."
Does it tell you how tired my eyes are that I read that as "Expect all kinds of incontinence from me this evening"? Does it say even more about how tired my brain is that when I read it as incontinence it made perfect sense?
The Tuxedo it is! Jennifer Love Hewitt is a true craftsman in her field.
Actually, it's Red Dragon to which I may be late.
Thanks, ya'll!
"Are you upset that Utah doesn't get penis puppetry?"
I am upset, yes, but not because it's something I want to see ('cause it was on HBO the other night anyway, heh. Hamburger. Sheesh). I'm upset because every time something like that happens it just reinforces every stereotype people outside of Utah have about Utah and Utahns, which by default lumps me in there with the closed-minded polygamists in the funny undies.
*sigh*
So, Crash, what you're saying is, I should put the words "dong" and "resin" in as large a font as I can on the exterior of your mix CD's envelope.
Roger wilco.

I'm upset because every time something like that happens it just reinforces every stereotype people outside of Utah Texas have about Utah Texas and Utahns Texans, which by default lumps me in there with the closed-minded polygamists in the funny undies racist rednecks with their electric chairs and wranglers.
**feels crash's pain. takes another drink of beer. sighs.**
Me and the Pipster were watching Conan O'Brian do some really unfunny stuff the other nite. She turned to me and said, "Wow, he's not as funny as he used to be. He needs new writers[pause]He should hire you and that Kafkaesque guy and the rest of those monkeys to write for 'em!!"
He should indeed.
It was the Keith Richards thing, wasn't it, Jon.
Jesus, how many times can they make that fucking joke.
He's old! He didn't embrace healthy lifestyle habits! We get it already!
I'm back and it was good. It wasn't that scary.
*triple checks the bolts and eyeballs the carving knife and hammer just to my left*
*closes brittney's window and discontinues stalking now that she's armed*
Posted by: eyeballkid on October 10, 2002 02:39 AMI get the feeling Brittney will hate us all in the morning.
Posted by: Miguel on October 10, 2002 03:35 AMHow was it, Britt? Isn't Philip Seymour Hoffman dreamy?
Posted by: ColdChef on October 10, 2002 11:11 AMI was entertained and frightened. So there was that. (I am working on a review, actually.)
I was just beginning to think Hoffman is sort of cute in an overly-talented, disheveled sort of way until they panned down to the guy's feet during that wheelchair scene.
Philip has monster toes. Ew.
*whooshing sound of collective peeling of socks as every male monkey-lover inspects his feet*
Monster toes - great, thanks very much Brittney, one more thing for us guys to worry about.

I've never had hemroids, but if I did, I imagine they'd look like Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Very talented and sympathetic hemroids, of course.
Holy crap, brittney! You gotta warn a girl before throwing around toes like that! Ewwwww. And me just getting my first coffee of the day....
I don't think I need it any more; I'm quite alert now.
Those toes in the pic *above* look like they are wrapped in strips of flour tortilla, like a very nasty Halooween hors d'oeuvre!
Posted by: tizzie on October 10, 2002 03:54 PMAnd, since someone who shall remain nameless hot-linked the image, we can deduce that the actual recipe for these disgusting things is at http://family.go.com/recipes/special/recipe/famf0900montoe/famf0900montoe.html.
Icky.
It's a Disney channel! Disney channels can be hot-linked (it sez here in The Stavros Compendium Of Acceptable Bandwidth Filching)!
Posted by: Miguel on October 10, 2002 06:29 PMNay, Disney must be hotlinked. For they are evil and wrong.
Posted by: jpoulos on October 10, 2002 06:35 PMCocktail wieners
6-inch tortillas
Ketchup or mustard
I would rather eat actual monster toes than cocktail weiners with ketchup.
I would rather eat actual monster toes than cocktail weiners with ketchup.
You are lying.
I would rather eat actual monster toes than cocktail weiners with ketchup.
OK, Mr. Smarty Pants. I'll bring the toes.
That was a twenty-minute hiccup post.
Crazy insane!
They are, tizzie
Oh my gawd! I can't believe that! Miguel, I can't stop laughing. That's surreal!
A note about posting images:
We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys
wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone
else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts
on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found
here. Thanks.
