In anticipation of the upcoming monkey mix CD swap, of which I am disdainfully not a part, I wonder what my fellow 9622ers won't be subjected to in the following days. You whipped up your Sigur Ros and compiled your Yo La Tengo, but did you think once about adding that Kriss Kross tune that gets you every time? Too ashamed to add that Dixie Chicks ditty?
Dare to share the most embarrassing CD in your collection? Make it the one you'd never typically claim. The one that reminds you just how far you've come. It can't be the Tom T. Hall's Greatest Hits CD your father bought you, you gotta have chosen and bought it for yourself.
Here, I'll go first:

Oh man, I've got to go with Live Baby, Live by INXS. I bought it at a used CD store on a whim several years ago and still listen to it periodically.
Posted by: Ufez Jones on October 30, 2002 03:57 PMI bought it "for my son" - yeah, right! "off the wall" by the pale one himself, Michael Jackson.
*does the Moonwalk of Shame*
when i was a kid, me and my neighbor were huge milli vanilli fans. we were so fucking crushed when we found out they were fakers.
actually, having been a year or so older, we sorta just dismissed it and moved on to, uh, i don't know, let's say metallica.
personally, i blame it on the rain.
Posted by: fishfucker on October 30, 2002 04:14 PMThere actually is a Dixie Chicks song on my mix, thankyouverymuch, but it's from the pre-Natalie Maines incarnation.
Posted by: Crash on October 30, 2002 04:17 PMoh, but my true shame? i owned an mc hammer tape.
which, yes, many many many people did, but it affected me so dramatically that i can't listen to the "Chill" background music for Dr. Mario without humming in my head "WE GOT TO PRAY JUST TO MAKE IT TODAY! PRAY! WE GOT TO ..."
(really. they're the same song. i swear it. go get an emulator.)
Posted by: fishfucker on October 30, 2002 04:27 PMOh, that's right! I had a Shabba Ranks tape!
I suck!
Posted by: kafkaesque, esq. on October 30, 2002 04:31 PMNow see, if we're going old tapes, then that's a whole different ballgame. I had Rick Astley and Eddie Money.
Posted by: Ufez Jones on October 30, 2002 04:35 PMI'm a firm believer in the idea that there should be know such thing as a "guilty pleasure" in music, but I see what your driving at.
One tape(I realize I'm dating myself)in my rack, that does give me a wicked case of the what-was-I-thinkin's is this one.
Spiffy Pants.
Now if you'll excuse me I must work for the Weekend. ;)

Posted by: kafkaesque, esq. on October 30, 2002 04:45 PMMy Milli Vanilli story:
My first marriage - rounding the 10 year mark, things were not good. Husband was having an affair with his secretary, who was about 19. We had a bit of a fight at the dinner table, and he stood up to leave. I'll never forget what he said:
"I could have gone to see Milli Vanilli with Sherri tonight, but instead, I came home to this!"
As he slammed the door on his way out, I tried to get the last word in:
"Hey, they don't even sing their own songs!"
He shoulda listened, but nooooooo.
Oh wait ...the Swingers soundtrack.
I really really suck!
Posted by: kafkaesque, esq. on October 30, 2002 05:29 PMKitaro, Light of the Spirit.
And Cameo's "Word Up" is the first cd I ever bought.
Posted by: ColdChef on October 30, 2002 06:29 PMCameo's "Word Up" is a good record. You should be proud of that as a first purchase. (Mine was "Play me like you play your old guitar" by Duane Eddy).

Posted by: amberglow on October 30, 2002 07:38 PMOh, I never owned any Metallica! Even before the anti-Napster charade! I swear!
Posted by: Aw on October 30, 2002 07:39 PMThis so freaking weird. When I saw that pic, the first album that popped into my head was Steve Vai's Sex & Religion. Then I saw the title of your post and my jaw dropped. Syncronicity or what?
Posted by: KevinSkomsvold on October 30, 2002 07:46 PMHappily, the truly embarrassing stuff was left behind or lost several moves ago. This before the CD era. I mean, what was worse -- the Madonna, the Huey Lewis or the Heart? (Oh right, like my collection of Star Wars soundtracks makes me so superior.)
Posted by: mcwetboy, aggressor on October 30, 2002 08:04 PMSpeaking of the swap, I have an apology to make to those of you who are cursed with the group of UNRULY MONKEYBONERS:
(specifically, Aine42, Senator Ufez, Jonmc, TJ and Marquis)
I'm sorry. Time ran out on me and I didn't get a chance to make a cd yet. So, instead, I have sent each of you a copy of the mix cd that me and my lady made for our wedding guests.
I warn you, it's heavy on ballads and syrupy crap (you'll remember her love of Foreigner, Boston, Air Supply and the like), but there's a few gems among the rubble. It's sorta sweet and there's a goofy picture of us on the cover, so that almost makes up for the crap on the disc.
Fear not, though. I'm no welcher! A gen-yoo-wine mix cd is being formulated in my head and I'll send it after the honeymoon.
I apologize for any bowel discomfort that Rod Stewart may cause you. Use caution.
Posted by: ColdChef on October 30, 2002 08:38 PMOh, and if any of you other swapsters want a copy of the wedding mix, drop me a line and I'll wing one at you.
It's not horrible. It makes her giggle when I play it.
Posted by: ColdChef on October 30, 2002 08:39 PMHow dumb do I feel now that I realize I spelled Steve Vai's name wrong?
Posted by: brittney on October 30, 2002 10:40 PMThe first album I bought with my own money was The Go-Go's or AC/DC "For Those About to Rock." I can't remember which came first but it hardly matters as both are abominable. Now, if I had been cool enough to buy "Dirty Deeds" I would be WAAAAAY ahead of the game, but no. Shame.
Off topic completely, I'm dressed in a crinoline and a really cruel corset, with Marie Antoinette makeup and wig on, in expectation of going out to a club for Halloween. I can hardly breathe. Just thought you'd like to know. (I am aware that Halloween is tomorrow, but what can I say? I've just got to get more bang for my buck when it comes to costumes).

I actually paid good money for Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians' Shooting Rubber Bands at the Stars on CD, although mercifully I don't have it any more. The one CD that's still in the rack (not the main rack, the subsidiary rack) that stands out as an embarassment is Weird Al Yankovic's Greatest Hits, but I just can't part with it.
And ColdChef, I'd definitely be up for a Wedding CD, if only for the picture!
Posted by: yhbc on October 30, 2002 11:16 PMYHBC: we are brothers.
I also have Edie Brickell, but I'll take it one step further:
I was a huge HUGE fan of Edie Brickell. For my sixteenth birthday, my friends rented a bus and about twenty of us went to New Orleans to see her in concert (she was opening for...*shudder*...Don Henley). I stood in my seat (sixth row) transfixed for her entire set (which included Bob Dylan's "Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall"). When Henley came out, my best friend and I snuck out of the concert and onto her tour bus.
Her goofy ass drummer found us under the table in her bus and was just like, "Ummm get out, dudes." And we were all like, "Ummm, okay."
When she married Paul Simon, it was like my musical worlds converged. "Just you wait," I said to myself, "those two are going to put out some kick ass albums."
I'm still waiting, Edie.
Posted by: ColdChef on October 30, 2002 11:23 PMI always thought Edie was hot, in a spaced-out Ellen-whats-her-face-from-the-Mac-ad kind of way. Like, you could bone her one night, and the next morning she'd be all "Hey, did we like do it last night, and stuff?"
I really have no idea what that means.
Posted by: Crash on October 30, 2002 11:40 PMEdie Brickell? You call that embarrassing? Feh.
I have many, many cds. A disgusting number of cds, actually, and many of them are temporarily in storage. The most embarrassing one I have on hand right now is Boyz II Men "II".
I did *not* pay for it though. A friend was going to sell it for $1 to the local record store, so I took it off her hands. I'll never listen to it. Ever. But I like to have a well-rounded collection.
Still, I think it takes a real man to admit that he's got "On Bended Knee" at his fingertips.
Posted by: jpoulos on October 30, 2002 11:47 PMOkay, you're gonna make me actually get up and go look at my collection. Be back in a sec.

That's right, the guy from Dokken who used to wear the big gay pirate blouse... no, the other one, no, the other one, no, the other one, that's right, him, starts his own band with a cover that looks like this :

and a young dong_resin thinks to himself "This, Self, is the new White Album."
I just found too cds that are both so heinous...
The wedding may be off.
Kenny G and Yanni. Both hers.
Hey, brittney, feel like getting married this weekend?
Posted by: ColdChef on October 30, 2002 11:56 PMWhoa. I'm a Senator. Don't sweat it ColdChef, my girlfriend will love it. She's all about the Air Supply.

I go to the luggage area and there are literally four bellcarts full of Adidas duffle bags, satchels, and backpacks. I'm all like, "Who are these bags for? Run DMC?"
They're like, "Ummm, yeah. Run DMC."
I was starstruck! I brought the bags up to the room and I was all like, "Anything else I can do for you, Jammaster Jay?"
He kind of chuckled and said, "Just Jay is fine."
"Certainly," I said. "And if you and Darrell need anything, just call for me." I didn't get a tip, but I got to meet Run DMC on my first day at the job.
And that was even better. Rest in Peace, Jay.

Posted by: brittney on October 31, 2002 12:20 AMVery sorry about Jam Master Jay, and about your own cold feet, Chef, but can we get back on topic here? Mrs. Commish has just reminded me that she bought CDs by BOTH Jewel AND Paula Cole. They both got donated to the library very quickly.
Posted by: yhbc on October 31, 2002 12:25 AMI have been instructed to add that, of course said donations were to the First Public Library in the United States, so that's cool.
The story is actually pretty neat - back when the local bigwigs incorporated the Town, they thought it would be a dandy idea to name the Town after Ben Franklin, and to drop him a line letting him know about the honor (it was the first Franklin in America, also) and also to drop a few not-so-subtle hints that it would be really nice if Ben could see his way to sending a bell for the Church. Ben wrote back, saying that "sense being better than sound", yadda-yadda, I offer these instead of a bell. He sent a few cases of books from his own library. So, we made the most of it, and ended up with the first library in the states. True story.
Posted by: yhbc on October 31, 2002 12:50 AMRichard Marx's "Hold On To The Night" was the theme song for the 1988 Livonia Churchill High School Senior Prom. I wore a white tux with teal tie and cummerbund. My girlfriend at the time wore a teal dress. My wife teases me mercilessly whenever she runs across pictures. But at least I know, deep down, that I'm still "holding on" to that night,
Hold on to the night Hold on to the memory I wish that I could give you more.... Hold on to the nightBy the way, I don't think I can beat Chef (or Brittney), but I would throw in Steve Winwood, "Back in the High Life." This emphatically does not include my wife's CDs, or any of my daughter's Barney CDs.
Posted by: pardon me on October 31, 2002 09:22 AMI think we all need to wait for witchstone to weigh in before we declare a winner.
Posted by: jpoulos on October 31, 2002 09:34 AMAnd we should ask B****fire what her "Best" cd is. That would probably trump all of us.
Posted by: ColdChef on October 31, 2002 09:59 AMI think the first record I ever asked for was the "Mr. Jaws" 45. I thought it was a real step up from the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea book-on-record and folk-songs-for-children records I had until then.
The first record I ever bought with money I earned was Paradise Theater. I also owned Dingly Dell around that same time (and which I only admit to now, because the statute of limitations has expired) I still have on vinyl or tape somewhere, The Human League's Dare, The Planet P Project, Marillion's Misplaced Childhood, Asia and Kitaro's India, too.
Posted by: octobersurprise on October 31, 2002 10:22 AMPlease, you guys know that I'm the winner. Except, I guess I can't be a winner since I'm not embarrassed that I actually like stuff that I listened to when I was in 7th grade. There's nothing in my CD collection that embarrasses me(there's not a lot in life that embarrasses me). And I have about 850 CDs, so you know there's a lot of shit in there that the 9622 Indie Police would be embarrassed by, judging from comments in other threads.
This is probably all stuff that you'd make fun of. With the exception of Mariah Carey, I still listen to all of them. Take your pick:
Madonna (7 or 8)
Richard Marx (3)
Mariah Carey (1) - this one I actually never listen to anymore
Alanis Morissette (2)
Paula Abdul (first album)
ABBA (5)
Erasure (6)
Tears For Fears (3)
Duran Duran (4)
Boyz II Men - the one with East Coast Swing on it
Counting Crows (3)
New Radicals (1)
No Doubt (3)
Foreigner (1)
Metallica (1)
Ratt (1)
Def Leppard (4)
Journey (1)
Cinderella (3)
The Eagles (1)
Motley Crue (2)
Marilyn Manson (1)
Sting (2)
I could go on, but I'm getting tired, and so are you.
Oh, here's the clincher: I have 2 (TWO) of the Now That's What I Call Music albums.

Posted by: octobersurprise on October 31, 2002 02:31 PMAny one have children records like Disney's theme to DaveyCrocket and Swamp Rats to name a few.
Or worse a collection of Disney character voices singing songs.........
But I do have a Disney record with Elvis singing a Christmas carol.
Flesh For Lulu are featured on the Best Soundtrack of All Time (or pretty damn close).
Posted by: witchstone on October 31, 2002 02:46 PMAh, my bewitching cheese-metal komerad, everyone knows this is the best sountrack of all time.

This is the best soundtrack ever!

Posted by: jonmc on October 31, 2002 04:14 PMoh well, if we're talking cassette singles, how about a little LA Guns "Ballad of Jayne"?
Posted by: witchstone on October 31, 2002 04:25 PMI saw Pac Man Fever a little earlier and shuddered. TJ used to play the whole album of that for hours on end as a kid. Over. ...And over. ...And over.
I'm barely controlling the urge to light myself on fire just thinking about it.
As for me, I'm going to have to go with the duet of Lou Reed and Sam Moore (from Sam & Dave) doing "Soul Man" from the eponymous movie starring C. Thomas Howell. Simply atrocious all the way around.
Posted by: MarsCrash on October 31, 2002 04:41 PM* calmly walks in and throws down the trifecta *

Posted by: tj on October 31, 2002 04:42 PMI forget the 45 of Sussideo (?) by Phil Collins...
and...
Carribean Queen by Billy Ocean
Wouldn't best soudtrack be, one that is more than just some background music.
I had also Tin Tin Duffy, Kiss Me not just on Vinl but 12inch club version mix.
Posted by: Thomcatspike on October 31, 2002 04:46 PMAh, good old Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy.
Random trivia fact: he was the original lead singer for Duran Duran way back in 1979 or something.
Posted by: witchstone on October 31, 2002 04:50 PMhmm. well, i listened to stuff like this not so long ago; so i think i win, because any cheesy song you *may* own, or have liked, i liked too, except i liked it PLAYED TWICE AS FAST.
christ, the next generation is going to be all fucked up.
(yes. i was once a happy hardcore dj before i came to my senses: i think my favorite 12" was a remix of "(don't you) forget about me".)
Posted by: fishfucker on October 31, 2002 04:54 PMoh, and by the way, i linked that particular song because i happened to have it at the ready from making the mix cd.
yes, i pity you poor bastards in my group.
Posted by: fishfucker on October 31, 2002 04:56 PMSpeaking of lifestyles of the rich and Gen X, I was priviledged enough to catch a glimpse of Eric Stoltz this summer past riding in his car 'round Madison ave. It was real, man.

Posted by: Crash on October 31, 2002 05:15 PMYes, this is all very well. But those are all old records. And things bought/given to you in the past when young and foolish clearly doesn't count.
So without further ado I give you:
A record released yesteryear and so awful it boggles the mind. Pure venom.
Posted by: soundofsuburbia on October 31, 2002 05:46 PMYes, this is all very well. But those are all old records. And things bought/given to you in the past when young and foolish clearly doesn't count.
Give it some years, soundsofsuburbia, it's all I have, my past, who can buy afford new experiences unless their gifts to others........
Am I too late to add ELO's greatest hits and all of Journey's records?
Posted by: eyeballkid on October 31, 2002 06:07 PM* downloads, listens as well *
Is it too late to get on fishfucker's list? Coffee just ain't doin' it for me any more, and I'm getting too old for amphetamines.
Posted by: yhbc on October 31, 2002 07:07 PMJust imagine a capella music speeded up.
It's ...it's just crazy enough to work!
Posted by: kafkaesque, esq. on October 31, 2002 08:19 PMI actually keep my embarrassing CDs behind the shelf most difficult to reach. I've just gone and looked and I'm shocked:
Sally Oldfield; Sarah Brightman; Leo Sayer; Queen (I actually rescued that as I like them now); The Shirts; Ultravox (sorry K; but you know it makes sense); Bob Seger (I love you, brother Jon, but...); Spandau Ballet (every single one); The Best of the Grateful Dead (as if there were such a thing); Abba Gold; The Summer of Love anthology (though I still like Barry MacGuire's "The Eve of Destruction"); Echo and the Bunnymen without Ian McCulloch; The Pogues without McGowan; The Best of Wings; something instrumental and batchelorpaddish called "Music To Watch Girls By"; Wendy or Walter Carlos CDs; the original "Switched On Bach" by Jacques Loussier; "Roy Orbison En Español"; the first three Marilyn Mansons and, against my better judgement, every single product by Cat Stevens.
I expect you all to sever any connection to me from now on - though looking at your own admissions, I'd say I fit in. ;)
Posted by: Miguel on November 1, 2002 09:11 AMMiguel's Sarah Brightman reminded me that I have The Phantom of the Opera original cast recording (double CD).
Posted by: pardon me on November 1, 2002 09:26 AMMiguel, "Music to Watch Girls By" was in my parents' audio foreplay collection, along with the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass album with the naked woman in whipped cream on the cover. When those went on the turntable, the Crown Royal bottle came out of its purple bag and all the kids got put to bed early.
Posted by: tizzie on November 1, 2002 10:10 AMsomething instrumental and batchelorpaddish called "Music To Watch Girls By"
Miguel, I would have bet my last nickel that your music collection consisted solely of items such as that.
Pardon Moi's Phantom of the Opera reminded me that I had the Chess soundtrack on vinyl. And if that's not embarassing enough, I also produced a Chess stage design (while watching the Iran-Contra hearings. good times. good times.) for a theatrical design class.
Posted by: octobersurprise on November 1, 2002 12:35 PMI actually have the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack.
Could Mohammed move a mountain or was that just PR?
Posted by: kafkaesque, esq. on November 1, 2002 01:05 PMWow you all surprised me in your choices and being an individualist, off with my head for being like minded. Or at least my ears...
Posted by: Thomcatspike on November 1, 2002 01:25 PMIs it too late to get on fishfucker's list? Coffee just ain't doin' it for me any more, and I'm getting too old for amphetamines.
if you're serious, perhaps not. i did overburn one copy. overburn. sure. yeah. christ. i'm so fucking hungover from halloween.
managed to drink the whole bottle of my stage rum.
Posted by: fishfucker on November 1, 2002 01:38 PMKaf, I have JCS, too (movie version), but didn't mention it because it has a cool quotient exponentially higher than Phantom. Although it is somewhat disturbing that I have two Andrew Lloyd Weber soundtracks. At least I don't have "Starlight Express" (as far as you know).
And octobersurprise, I can't fault you for Chess. I still love it when "One Night In Bangkok" turns up on the radio.
Posted by: pardon me on November 1, 2002 01:39 PMfish, now i know i should stock up on E before listening to your cd.... ; >
I'd just like to take this moment to point out that Utah is in possession of the coolest radio station ever (click on the "Music" link).
Posted by: Crash on November 1, 2002 01:54 PMI *may* have a copy of Les Miz on CD somewhere. I know I had it on cassette.
Posted by: jpoulos on November 1, 2002 03:30 PMDude!
Just as no Good can exist without Evil, neither can I be this cool without just a little bit of cheese.
Posted by: jpoulos on November 1, 2002 04:39 PM9622: Can't be this cool without just a little bit of cheese.
I actually have the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack.
i have it too -- on vinyl. as well as the soundtrack to the beegees sgt. pepper's club movie.
Posted by: fishfucker on November 2, 2002 03:47 PMSomeday I'm going to have to open up the big box of LPs that I moved to Boston in 1988 and never opened. I'm pretty sure there's a JC Superstar in there as well.
Posted by: yhbc on November 2, 2002 05:09 PMYes, but are you going to see Sebastian Bach as Jesus Christ Superstar? As far as metal has-beens/Andrew Lloyd Webber combination, it doesn't get much better than that.
P.S. I saw him as Riff Raff in Rocky Horror on Broadway. Tee hee.
Posted by: witchstone on November 4, 2002 10:42 AMEvery time I see the title of this thread, I want to say:

Posted by: tizzie on November 4, 2002 11:35 AMHe's the former lead singer of Skid Row, a metal band from the 80s.
Posted by: witchstone on November 4, 2002 12:04 PMah, another tape i used to own.
really, judas gets all the rocking parts in JCS. i don't know why anyone would want to be jesus.
Posted by: fishfucker on November 4, 2002 05:59 PMYeah. Having your birthday on Christmas must really suck.
Posted by: kafkaesque, esq. on November 4, 2002 06:55 PMI think it would suck to have played Judas in the film and be playing it 20 years later opposite Sebastian Bach.
Kind of reminds me of that scene in Soapdish where Kevin Kline is doing a one man Death of a Salesman in Florida dinner theatre for old folks. And some old woman spills her coffee and starts bitching about it until finally he goes over and mops it up, still saying his lines.
Posted by: witchstone on November 5, 2002 10:28 AMJust so no one gets the wrong idea: I'd still sleep with Sebastian Bach. I just wouldn't see him in JCS.
Posted by: witchstone on November 5, 2002 10:30 AMI'd ask for full body armor and a 50 yard buffer zone, myself.
Posted by: pardon me on November 5, 2002 12:51 PM"an STD with big hair" may be the perfect description of all of the 80s.
