November 08, 2002 : Swap CD Thread Part Deux

Because 160+ comments are just too many to wade through, and there's bound to be a lot more.

To give proper credit, the picture was lifted from these folks' site. I can't tell if they're still actively doing the monkeymusic thing or not (copyright 1999 - bad sign!) but at one time they were, of course, some of Nashville's finest working musicians and singers. Rock on, Monkeytime!

People have said these things about that :

Sorry, I've been too busy invading a Nigerian governor's house.

Meanwhile, the securitymen at the Government House had banned workers in the office from drinking water from the governor’s source of water supply, apparently to prevent him from being poisoned.

That's Mr. Bello's middle name. His first name is Shiluvsyu and he has a brother named Zitininlalawaytinfomi.

I read it.

160+ comments are just too many to wade through...

A monkey must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This commish a long time have I watched. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh! Excitement. Heh! A monkey craves not these things.

You are reckless!

Posted by: yoda on November 9, 2002 04:02 PM

Yet more proof that the monkeys are taking over. I, for one, welcome our new monkey overlords, as long as they continue promising me a fiefdom.

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 9, 2002 05:20 PM

Paying them off, eh, eyeballkid? Bribing them? Empty banana promises! Hollow coconuts! I think it's all quite sad, really.

Posted by: tizzie on November 9, 2002 05:22 PM

Again, more proof of the monkey takover. Choose side people, the time draws near.

See, there's so many of them they report everything twice.

Posted by: readymade on November 9, 2002 06:16 PM

I received Kaf's CD last week and I've been listening to it all weekend. I'm delighted with it. Nearly every track is by a current or past favorite performer of mine--and in this case familiarity definitely does not breed contempt. I'd never heard of Jack Logan--surprisingly, now that I see he's an Athens boy and REM associate--and I don't have any Love Spit Love, either (also a little surprising, given I was once a big P-Furs fan) but both of them are going on my future acquistions list. And even Neubaten--which I can usually take or leave--works on the CD, staying with the autumnal tone of the whole but keeping it from becoming too mellow or dreamy. Finally, no need for apologies for the live Dead Can Dance track--I'm one of those quietly applauding fans!--(wearing black, naturally)--and the applause concludes the CD perfectly and really makes whole thing seem like a live performance. So, kudos, Kafkaesque! Thanks much!

In other news, once I print my labels, I'll drop mine in the mail. We now return you to your monkey militia reports ...

Posted by: octobersurprise on November 11, 2002 10:46 AM

This is getting serious.
I know you enjoy being rowdy, fellow simians, but biting local politicians isn't nice.

Posted by: b****fire on November 11, 2002 11:28 AM

Besides the ColdChef wedding album (which my girlfriend has stolen) the only swap CD i've received is Aine42's, which is very nice. Some stuff I'd heard before, some I hadn't, but it's very well-rounded and contains a lot of things I would normally never listen to. Big time kudos for the Iris DeMent song, which is soooooooo lovely. I want to skinny dip in the syrup that is her voice. And it sounds like absolutely nothing I own, so that's double good.

Other favorites are the Shellac song (Squirrel Song) that almost made it on to my disc, The Great Song of Indifference by the Boomtown Rats, the Grant Lee Buffalo track that I hadn't heard in over five years, and the Rev. Horton Heat song. You've gotta love the Rev.

Posted by: Ufez Jones on November 11, 2002 01:23 PM

Next time everyone gets mixes made on these.

Posted by: anathema on November 11, 2002 07:05 PM

You've gotta love the Rev

I don't know, man. I really dug their first three albums, but they seemed like they just mailed it in after that. Good live show after Martini Time though.

Posted by: kafkaesque on November 11, 2002 07:18 PM

Truth be told, kaf, I'm real hit or miss on their studio stuff. Some of it I just flat out don't like (aine put a good one on her swap though). But damn he puts on a hell of a show. Especially in the home town.

Posted by: Ufez Jones on November 11, 2002 10:39 PM

I just saw the Rev a couple of weeks back and as usual it was a great show, although this time he didn't pick out a guitar solo with his dick, as he has done previously. The recorded stuff may not be so special, but the song "One Time For Me" always puts a smile on my face.

Posted by: liam on November 11, 2002 11:00 PM

I've been listening to fishfucker's massive 2 disc mix for a couple of days now, and love it. CD For Children is the perfect name for this mix, which goes for a consistency in playful tone rather than genre. Another case of someone with tastes parallel to mine. I heard JJ72 on some faceless college station over the net, and was real pleased to hear this song again.
The Muffs and Blümchen on the same disc? You've got to love that .

Only at the last minute did I decide to avoid Sid Vicious My Way on my own mix.
It's fucking horrible.
Over all, a great tsunami of fine, fine tunes.
Plus, mine came with green tea and a pharoah's head with oozy head orifices. Both taste oddly similar. Much thanks, fish.

Posted by: don't touch that, it's dong resin on November 12, 2002 10:00 AM

My own domestic headed discs have been in the mail for a day now, and should hit fellow red-assed folk `bout thursday. Romakimmy and Miguel, yours will be a few days later. On the bright side, since mailing one disc abroad costs the same as mailing three, you're going to get as much dong as you can handle.

Posted by: dong resin on November 12, 2002 10:01 AM

Talk about great band names - "Asylum Street Spankers"! Where did you find them, Rak Daddy? That tune is hilarious. I'm liking your disc a LOT. Thanks!

I've got four "extras" on their way out to Witchstone, Brittney, Uncle Fes and the lovely and talented Dong Resin. Mmmmm, more swappy goodness.

Posted by: tizzie on November 12, 2002 09:14 PM

Yes, much as I (and my children) enjoyed both discs of the baiseur de poissons, we were all mesmerized by the goo-spouting sphinx head, which my youngest son immediately claimed for his own as his class is studying ancient Egypt.

I realize the connection between a goo-spouting sphinx head and ancient Egypt is fairly tenuous, but it's a public school.

Posted by: Crash on November 12, 2002 09:20 PM

It's better than the "green tea" and ancient Egypt connection, which could have been the other outcome. And I have to say that I'm glad that romakimmy's and the dong of resin's mixes haven't shown up yet; it spreads out the magic, like having your birthday for a week instead of a day.

Posted by: readymade on November 12, 2002 10:37 PM

See, I figured that because it had it's nose, it was a pharaoh head, rather than a sphinx. But then, it clearly says "sphinx" on it's rear in plain legible english.

What's important here, is it's eye boogers taste like citrus.

Posted by: dong resin on November 13, 2002 12:28 AM

i've never tried eating one, though i have broken several. i'm a jumpy, stressed-out kinda guy.

that is my favorite brand of green tea, though. just thought i'd share.

Posted by: fishfucker on November 13, 2002 01:42 PM

Aine, thanks for the cocktail monkeys in the disc, I haven't had time to listen yet, but it looks damn good from the playlist.

Marty has a story about one of the mokeys that he pilfered and some strange, scary, skanky drunk lady at the bar on Friday. Let's just say that the green monkey is no more, and we're down to four.

Posted by: tj on November 13, 2002 05:20 PM

Due to my tardiness, I will be sending out doubles. My brief is done, so I'll have some time this weekend. Sorry team. Hey, come to think of it, I've onlt received one mix.

Posted by: anathema on November 13, 2002 05:34 PM

aine42's mix is a tremendiffilous callback to the respectable music of the 80s with newer and fun stuff thrown in for fun. Given my own biases, she gets special points for the Shellac, (oldschool) Sloan, Alison Krauss, Joy Division, Rev. Horton Heat and Gomez tracks, though the version of "Detroit Swing 66" (off the lamentable In Our Gun) is woefully inferior to the live one. I like the track by OK Go, too, and will have to explore their infectious guitar nonsense. Points for flow and overall, um, cohesion!

ColdChef's wedding mix is sappy as all heck. And so: it's great!

I stumbled across this in my internet forays recently, and though I didn't want to post it to the Blue, uh, if you like Beat Happening or The Wipers, er...

"We have cameras."

That is, due to a drubken database entry guy or somethin',, Mediaplay is selling the Beat Happening and Wipers box-sets for $8.99 US. Yes, um, box-sets. The Beat Happening one is listed for $60 at the K Records website, so it is a bona fide bargain. Megabargain, even. Shipping's only $3 or so in the US, $10 for Canada, and outside of there, unless you have a North American credit card, you're (woefully) out of luck.

I already ordered the Beat Happening one, though it hasn't yet arrived. Hope this is of interest to someone in monkeyland... Otherwise I just wasted ten minutes that could have been much better spent writing a paper. :)

Posted by: Marquis on November 13, 2002 05:41 PM

your links are a little broken, for me, at least.

i got really excited about this, then realized i don't buy music, like the evil media pirate that i am.

but pirates are really coming into their own. i mean, dave eggers likes them.

Posted by: tj on November 14, 2002 10:11 AM

don't get me wrong, the iron-on looks to be of nice quality, it's just that i've got a high expectation of baseball shirts, because i've owned one for about 8 years now, and the fabric is softer than baby skin.

even them eatin' babies.

and the cafepress shirt is definitely.. well, no babies.

maybe i just need to launder it a trillion times.

dong_resin: I got your cd this morning and was charmed by both the graphics and the extra special surprise. To really make it fabulous you could have painted over the "pop" and made it "anthrocks." That would have been hi-larious, especially coming from FL. I can't wait to listen; it seems you and I hung in the same bad crowd as whippersnappers.

Updates, but not full reviews yet:

I just got the walrus cd from across the pond - exquisite packaging, which makes this a keeper all to itself! The content seems to be all about those "hippity-hop" things the kids are all riding these days, so after I give it a good listen I'll report further. Thanks, walrus!

Also, I too weaseled my way to receiving a fishfucker cd set, and have enjoyed them both - as well as the squishy sphinx head - immensely.

Posted by: yhbc on November 14, 2002 10:09 PM

Woops! I forgot to mention that I also received the RakDaddy cd yesterday, which is playing in the cd drive as I type. Great stuff, but who does the uncredited comedy skit in between the fourth and fifth tracks (the one about only Presbyterians going to heaven)?

Posted by: yhbc on November 14, 2002 11:08 PM

Cheers yhbc: it will give you a strong constitution ... I also got your disc, RakDaddy's and tizzie's one too. I love 'em all so far, and will write reviews here soon. On the other hand, jude seems only to have received kaf's so far ...

Posted by: walrus on November 15, 2002 11:20 AM

To continue the tradition of Marquis' cool internet stuff extravaganza (Part 1: The Oxford English Dictionary Online; Part 2: Beat Happening and Wipers Box-Sets!), by using the coupon code 617A, you can buy a pair of the superb Koss PortaPro headphones, direct from Koss, at 50% off.

If you're in the States, it comes to $31 USD or so PPD. Sources tell me that this is an astounding deal, and from what I've read around the web, the PortaPros - despite the geeky retro look - are some of the best portable headphones on the market, at least in the under-$100 market. I ordered mine today, and if any of you have been looking for some audiophile-worthy headphones to replace the shitty ones that came with your walkman/iPod, look no further!

Or do, but don't say that I didn't try to help.

Posted by: Marquis on November 15, 2002 07:39 PM

I'm rockin' to the Uncle Fes cd and it IS a powerful potion! Bluesy, funky and soulful so far. Will review after I'm further in.

I also got the Walrus' international shipment today and it is in line for later listening. This is a lotta fun.

Posted by: tizzie on November 15, 2002 08:38 PM

i didn't get yours yet either, dong...

fish's cd#2 rocks also by the way! that vampire song is great! (i'm unbelievably glam, i'm happy as a clam!)

(meanwhile, i already got a cd from the mf swap)

Posted by: walrus on November 16, 2002 05:21 AM

Thanks, Marquis. I for one needed better headphones for the ole ipod and will be walking around ubergeek style. I'm intrigued by the people who spend more than $100 on phones, though.

Then again: A servant to squeeze toothpate onto the brush, another to hold the specimen bottle for the urine sample?

Posted by: liam on November 16, 2002 12:36 PM

thanks for the heads up on the koss phones, marquis. do you know if those are cups or pads? it's hard to tell from the picture, but they look like open-eared pads (which i can't stand -- sound bleed everywhere) but if they're cups i definitely want a pair.

liam: anyone with any sort of home studio setup, djs, and audiophiles probably comprise the market for expensive headphones. i've actually got nice pair of seinhausers -- and when you're going to be wearing the things for a few hours, you want the quality ones. but yeah, i gotta agree, i don't take them outside: i prefer ear-buds for walking around because 1) you don't look like a space monkey, and 2) they do a good job of not broadcasting your music to the general populace, so you don't irritate people with hissing ride cymbals.

(yeah, i listen to music too loud in my headphones. on the plus side, i don't have to cover my ears anymore when a fire truck goes by.)

Posted by: fishfucker on November 16, 2002 05:00 PM

oh, and btw amberglow, the rest of the tracks on from 'future bible heroes' weren't quite as good, so don't go buying the cd. or do. i don't know. in other news, i went to go see "i am the wtc" (from the first disc) last night, and they're pretty decent -- kinda a karaoke show though really, not a lot of live performance except for singing. recommended live, i suppose. they probably play in ny quite a bit, as that's where they are from, along with the rest of the electro resurgence.

Posted by: fishfucker on November 16, 2002 05:05 PM

Mr Fish - your guess is as good as mine, but they look like pads to me. I've got some big honkin' cup headphones for when I utterly want to be in my own world, but Montreal's crazy crazy streets prevent this pedestrian from preferring them on the walkabout.

Glad nutmeg's still being enjoyed. Your mix, too, is utterly fab, walrus, and i've been mining it for my own mixing purposes.

oh - as for future bible heroes, i find most of their stuff yawnworthy, too. ditto for I am the WTC - apart from some Enon and er, other things, the whole casiopop thing just doesn't do it for me. (Though the Sexual Harassment song on your last MonkeyMix, fishfucker, kills.) Speaking of which, the new Cat Power record has a cut that's definitely groovin' on the electro revival. Okay, but not top-notch.

A friend saw Tara Jane O'Neil and Mick Turner last night. He said they sucked, and the set was only 30 minutes. You've been warned.

Posted by: Marquis on November 16, 2002 06:01 PM

I just received Walrus and Roobarb's package o' goodness.

I have to say the discs from Walrus have been my faves in our swaps: totally different from the band of morose banshees I usually listen to. I have so far heard all of your new mix, Walrus, and will get to Roobarb's tomorrow probably.

Even my wife liked it, and she has very strict tastes.

A blessing! A blessing!

Thanks to you both.

Ah. Glad they made it, finally.
Musical taste is subjective, but pop rocks are hard not to like.

I figure if a disc sent to "raj. (fishfucker)" can get where it's going, anything can.
I dig the US post office.

Posted by: readymade on November 17, 2002 09:19 PM

or help me in a porno interview, i don't know.

Posted by: fishfucker on November 18, 2002 12:35 PM

Posted by: dong_resin on November 18, 2002 12:52 PM

We always look forward to your mixes too kaf. This one was even more melancholic than the others, if such a thing is possible. But still roundly appreciated.

Posted by: walrus on November 18, 2002 01:26 PM

I do kind of dig the melancholy music I guess. I promise for the next mix I will force some happiness into it.

By the way, anyone else interested in an Xmas swap? The way you guys lag though, it might be more like an Easter Swap.

Posted by: kafkaesque on November 18, 2002 01:47 PM

Does that mean a swap of Christmas music, or a Christmas swap of music? While I enjoy a small sliver of cheesy Christmas/Hannukah music, I've never met a whole CD of it that I've wanted to spend more than five minutes with.

Posted by: Marquis on November 18, 2002 01:54 PM

Well, I agree that it's hard to find 80 minutes of Christmas Carols. I could probably find about 35 mins. How bout a holiday season type thing. Fall music, October People, that sort of thing?

And as far as pure Xmas music I confess it is difficult to find good stuff. I swear by The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole, and of course the Elvis Christmas Album. But it can be rough.

You can only hear "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" so many times before you want to reach through the ol' hifi and club Yoko.

Posted by: kafkaesque on November 18, 2002 02:00 PM

And if I hear "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" one more time, I'm taking a hostage.

Posted by: kafkaesque on November 18, 2002 02:01 PM

I got the dong's mix on friday, but haven't listened to it enough to make a review yet (i will play track 9 over and over before I do, though, Dong.)

I really enjoyed the Pop Rocks as well. Must to my girlfriend's chagrin, I decided to risk all and pop some into my mouth with a big gulp of coke diet Dr. Pepper. I did it because I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel. Nothing happened. No head explosions, no stomach rumbling, nada. The next day though, my shit had the consistency of Reddi-Wip. And it made that cool *kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiicsh* noise when it came out**. Thank you dong. Thank you.

As far as x-mas tunes go, for my money "Merry Christmas, I Fucked Your Snowman" is the gold standard.

I think a thread reviewing our clonic discharges would trump CD reviews real easy.

For example, I had my own pop rocks with coffee, and it made my poop more like those black ash snake things that come in little tablets which you set fire to.

Posted by: dong_resin on November 18, 2002 02:19 PM

I've never met a whole CD of it that I've wanted to spend more than five minutes with

what the hell are you talking about? clearly you've never given a listen to the "Christmas Rap" compilation. it'll change your life.

it changed mine.

and now it's only like $6 for the cd. i paid nearly twice that when it originally came out (it was worth it, i assure you).

Okay, everything has been posted. An extra has already gone to Marquis. If anyone else wants one send me an email or AIM: doubleatlaw
I apologize ahead of time for that crappy packaging, I scred the pouch on that one. I thought it was more important to get them out than to get tricky. I also remembered tj saying something about having them by Thanksgiving. roo, yours may be a few days late I presume.

Yes, readymade, I did (and I've listened to both discs). Thank you, thank you. I just feel bad because I haven't sent mine out yet -- I will mail it on Monday. (*frantically burns*)

And I also received Krimur's today. The Howler Monkeys are all settled up. What's our prize?

Obviously, the Howler Monkeys all have good taste, like Wilco, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, Jonathon Richman and the Modern Lovers, and always turn in their assignments on time.

We also tend to get poo flung at us by the lesser-socialized kids on the playground, but that's okay - we know we're good.

jonmc - still waiting! but with anticipation!

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 25, 2002 12:13 PM

Corinthian leather doesn't actually exist. This proves my theorem that Ricardo Montalban is an agent of an insane God.

Lengthy bio of Ricardo that mentions the nonexistence of Corinthian Leather.

And, coincidentally, you can get Corinthian Leather bible covers.

What does it all mean?

Posted by: kafkaluxinterior on November 25, 2002 12:13 PM

That is a paradox, isn't it? It doesn't exist, and yet you can buy it. Maybe it's just a state of mind -- like Ricardo Montalban himself.

Posted by: kafkaluxinterior on November 25, 2002 12:26 PM

Also, Chrysler had Montalban say "Corinthian Leather" in that commercial just to sound impressive, while actually being meaningless. It's kind of like a 70s meme. The term gained acceptance, and so Corinthian Leather was made acceptable because so many people believed it was real. It's like reverse engineering from UFOs or Bush's election.

Posted by: kafkaluxinterior on November 25, 2002 12:27 PM

I saw Montalban on Telemundo doing a "Save The Children" type spot in Spanish. Although I realize it's his mother tongue, I still found it a little brain-jarring.

Just think if Miguel started posting in Portuguese. Talk about brain-jarring.

The low swap mood mentioned above can't stand, because not only did the mighty Red Assed Baboons step right up the plate with timely and even swapping, but I got some stunning "outside" discs that I've got to give big mad props to, as the kids say:

First, from the mighty Ufez Jones, who kindly sent not only a begged for copy of showcase showdown's Appetite Of Kings (ass kicking and very much appreciated), but his own sweet mix disc chock full of stuff that (as seems to be a common occurrence this trade) feels like it came from my other collection of cds, the ones I don't own yet.
Brother Inferior? nice mix indeed.

Also did I receive Jonmc's usual Johnny Fever/that guy from Northern Exposure With The Hair, I Think His Name Was Chris chunk of goodness, this time featuring my new favorite song of all time, the Bellray's " Stupid Fuckn' People".
Raw genius.

Aine42 continues the theme of "shit dong really likes" and wisely included" dead souls" by joy division, and "lone star song" by grant lee buffalo, both tunes heard some time ago on better radio stations than I have now, and long since missed.

The mighty tizzie comes from the other direction with "shit dong has heard of, sorta, and really likes" with a disc chock fulla ass ponys.
Ass ponys.

once more...
ASS PONYS.

Great band, fun to type.

I hope I didn't leave anyone out, since your discs all arrived together, but so far out of about 9 mixes received I haven't been bored yet. I feel the need to say a massive heartfelt thanks to all who sent or swapped with me, because I'm loving the haul this go `round.

Tizzie, Jon, your discs are in the mail. (I don't know if my emails didn't get through or what, but I needed shipping adresses, which I got from from your packages.)

I think anyone (in the US) expecting a disc from me has it by now. If not, or if you just want one, let me know.

Commish-that group is Canada's own Frantics, known to everyone who listened to Doctor Demento in the 80s. They're the guys who did "Tae Quon Leap," better known as "Ed Gruberman Gets A Boot To The Head." Did I forget to write that one down? I'm a bad Howler Monkey...

And, Tizzie, the Spankers are an excellent band out of Austin. They play all acoustic versions of 20s and 30s jazz and bluegrass. Their first album, "Spanks For the Memories" is excellent. I'd be happy to send y'all copies of various Spankage in return for more of that groovy stuff y'all have sent.

Yay! More music!

It's another beautiful day on the mix CD race-track, with three new contenders who are not competing with one-another. Yes, these stallions will be running in completely different directions, ladies and gentlemen, avoiding each other for the most part, intersecting only in a spirit of whimsy, laid-backedness and groove.

anathema's "just another manic monkey" is a bip-bopping, foot-tappin', teddybear-stabbin' bout of energy. After a schizophrenic Kid Loco intro, the Jimmy Castor Bunch starts things up with the oompa-loompa strut of "King Kong". Over the next fourteen tracks (if my counting's right), we meet some of the big faces in today's IDM world - akufen, prefuse 73, squarepusher - as well as chill and cheese by everyone from Gil Scott-Heron to Freddy Fresh. I'd been itching to hear 2ManyDJ's, having read a lot about it (and being in love with the whole bootleg scene), but - to be honest - was sorely disappointed. Through there's a nice flow between dolly parton and royskopp, frinstance, it just felt too clubby and vapid for me. That doesn't take away from the total fun oomph of the album, however. props to anathema.

jonmc's "monkey mix" is a ton of fun. i really, really really like the Joe South tune that opens things up - like you wrote in your notes, a fine fine Van Morrison-meets-sitar number, with earnestness and yearning. The Court Jesters' "Roaches" is delicious, setting shoes pounding against the floorboard (props to the guy who does the weird sounds in the background). Though I'm a big Fahey fan, I hadn't heard his outstanding version of the now familiar (and loathed) "Layla". The disc's further excursions into R&B and indie punk, too, spread the smile across my face, though the Polkaholics tune failed to hold my interest. I prefer my kishke in the flesh, I suppose. "In Spite of Ourselves" was hysterical and sweet, the Collins Kids made me wish I was a 14-year-old band-member. phew. thanks so much, jonmc!

anathema's "Sunday Morning" is mellow and a touch melancholy, just as I like it. Particularly wonderful were the tracks by Nico and Manitoba. Much applause for the Talk Talk - the late-period work by that band (and Mark Hollis's wonderful solo disc) is one of my happiest discoveries of the past six months. All in all, the CD's relaxed, sky-blue IDM and crooning singer-songwriter stuff makes me want to shoot heroin or just take a long, sun-dappled nap. thank-ee repeatedly, anathema! this one's a favourite!

Posted by: Marquis on November 29, 2002 12:24 PM

Dong_resin: guilt really works for people like me. Here's a CD review for "Coffee and Asphalt:"

Let me preface this by saying that I love in-between soundbites, so you've already won me over. Those little segues make me so damn happy.

I think that of all the cd's I received, "Coffee and Asphalt" had the most songs from my own past on it, many of which I haven't heard since my misspent youth. Between Fishbone who I've seen a million times and Living Color who had a short but sweet career that I followed closely, I felt right at home. Punk rock in all forms (Black Flag, Ramones) reminds me of a lot of smoky parties where we were blotto, poor and happy. I thought the variance between the punk rock and the sweet melodies of Nina and Ray Charles (both of whom were on my disks, as you know) is the sort of counterpoint and contrast that makes a really interesting listen. I think some people think that it's off-putting to have such different sounds and styles right next to each other, but I think unexpected contrasts make a cd fascinating. The songs I knew I liked, and the ones that I didn't were much in my style (I don't have a genre that I listen to at all, so it's always a crapshoot).

The only song I can say I didn't like was track 8 (sixth sense), but it's redeemed by tracks 9 and 10, so no worries. Songs that sound like a drum machine was turned on and left on random-and-repeat bum me out. But overall I think it's a great mix; variation and comedy, or fast punk and slow grooves, two great tastes that taste....you know. I think it's a great mix.

Posted by: readymade on December 16, 2002 03:43 AM

You didn't like Josh Wink's Sixth Sense?!
Omigod, how can you be so negative, readymade? I looked really hard to find that particular version and you just massacre it like that? What the hell?
Look, you didn't have to say anything, but to go out of your way to write this big fake cushion of false enthusiasm for the rest of my disc that I slaved over only to make yourself feel better about the evisceration you knew you were planning... that's just so messed up. To build me up, then drop me like that.

Look, Josh Wink uses repetition like Coltrane did, only he's adjusted it for the current rhythms and electronic instrumentation that- oh, forget it. You don't care. you've heard it at least twice, that's plenty for you to just make up your mind, I'm sure.

Okay, look, not every song can be an easy-to-digest sugar coated pop nugget, okay? people (smart people) get bored. Sometimes you have to pole shift just to keep the mix interesting. Sixth Sense was the ONLY song that could fit that sonic space I'd spent 7 tracks building up to..how can that not be obvious?
You don't LIKE it? What if people didn't LIKE a little something called sand? Sand is pretty irritating at first, but if everyone just decided they didn't LIKE it, we'd never have silicone, or the very computer with which you pass such harsh judgment on those you think you're so much smarter than.
You didn't LIKE it.
Well, great.
I don't LIKE how uppity women are allowed to get in this "modern" age, but you don't hear me saying so. Next time I'll send you a disc that's nothing but the sounds of black people being oppressed in apartheid era South Africa, I'll bet you'll "like" that, won't you.

so, i listened to your lovely cd while whipping around the curves of highway 1 in the darkness, hoping to hell that i didn't run out of gas because i refused to be gouged by the bastard hicks who have full-service stations along that particular highway where gas runs from 2.50 to 2.65 a gallon, for basic unleaded.

your cd, dong, for the most part, kept me from falling asleep at the wheel and careening off some jaggy cliff just north of hearst castle, so i suppose you're due thanks from me and mine, and curses from the rest of the nation.

yes, twas a far sadder thing that your disc was not "lullaby for fishfucker", because then we'd all be spared forevermore the injustice of getting hit by wayward spittle when i'm talking excitedly at parties, which happened just last weekend. i was pretty embarassed, but then i remembered i could go home and rock the rocky rockety rock, and then everything just went south and i felt like i should probably stop typing and just hit post before i said anything more that was particularly stupid.

And did the lone Maldorian, Fett himself, not say : "That which you do for the least of my fishfuckers, that you do unto me?"
And yay, it was so, for all the fishes in all the seas would forevermore have gauge 14 poopchutes, and silent fishy screams, and tiny webed appendages would forever strum dueling banjos off in the inky void of the deep.

"If you have fucked even the least of these my fish brethren, ye have fucked me."

The brilliance of this is that you can take it two ways.

But posting images that reside on someone else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found here. Thanks.
