Thanks to circumstances too complicated to explain, I've been given the opportunity, in exchange for blogging, of choosing a computer system (including monitor) not more expensive than $2500-$3000 tops. Please help me decide, monkey-bruthas and sistas who know about these things!
My instinct tells me to go for a Mac - they were my first computers and, before the present nondescript PC (which I have to return), I owned and enjoyed a Cube. Also, I like Macs, they're cute, they cheer me up and help me write.
My needs are purely webby - I want something as fast and easily watchable/hearable as a cable connection will allow. It would be nice if I could burn CDs for swapping purposes, if this is possible, but my main requisites are surfing speed and easy, hassle-free operation.
Any ideas? Prices are about the same in Portugal as they are in the U.S., after industry discounts.
Thanking you in advance - and apologizing for the abuse of 9622.net...
Posted by at November 28, 2002 07:30 PMdual G4 and as big a monitor as you have $ left over for...
Posted by: just some turkey on November 28, 2002 08:01 PMI stay as far away from peecees as possible. You could do the 17" imac w/ superdrive within that range. Okay...I've waited almost a week to tell...my fiancee made me get a 20 gig iPod last weekend. It's amazing. Starting to get into the new Apple apps too. isync and ical with the iiiiiiiiipod. Simple and very useful. I look at peecees now and I'm just amazed and wonder why anyone would put themselves through that torture. Oh...happy Thanksgiving everyone. I'm stuffed, sitting in from of mom's fireplace. Peace.
Posted by: anathema on November 28, 2002 09:17 PMmore lower-end than that one: like this one-- only 1700, then you can get a studio display or something....
Posted by: some turkey/amberglow on November 28, 2002 09:18 PMor you could go much cheaper with an emac (just $990-ish lately)...if you're only going to be writing and posting on it...
Posted by: amberglow on November 28, 2002 09:29 PMThanks, anathema and amberglow! So I guess it's either a 17" imac or a dual G4 with a 17" display. The imac is so much cuter and the large screen hides the base. But I suppose it's underpowered compared to the ugly-looking G4.
Ah, decisions...decisions!
Here in Portugal, all my friends said if I buy a Mac I won't be able to see half the Web (and not see it much more slowly), send attachments with my e-mails to my friends...
[You're right, Brittney - I am sounding very camgirlish!)
Posted by: Miguel on November 28, 2002 09:58 PMMiguel, your friends are fibbin'. You'll be able to see everything on the Web that you can see now.
Join us. Become one of us. You know the Mac is calling you.
(I might be biased. I've been on 'em for 15 years.)
Posted by: aine42 on November 28, 2002 10:03 PMyou can expand the g4 and/or upgrade to a g5 chip when they come out (next year), but with the imac or emac you supposedly can't upgrade them....and you can hide the g4 box on the floor anyway....
oh, and spring for the double your memory deal for $40--they never ship with enough memory....
: > (hoping apple sends me a check...)
Posted by: amberglow on November 28, 2002 10:05 PMI haven't yet bought the thing and already I have to upgrade?
I guess my only question is for writing and surfing, do I need whatever the G4 has that a 1 GB imac hasn't? I have no films to make, no photoshopping ambitions, nothing remotely graphic-related I'd like to do. But, if g4 it is, then g4 on the floor sounds good.
Thanks so much, dear aine42 and amberglow!
P.S. This would be the anathema-inspired imac set-up I'd go for. It also looks like I'd be able to burn 9622 CDs "in loco", without buying anything else...

Posted by: quonsar on November 28, 2002 10:56 PMI guess I'm the lone dissenter here. I'd build my own Windows box, similar to this Dell Dimension 8250.
Macs just ain't got the horsepower, my simian siblings. That 133mHz bus is a HUGE bottleneck, especially for a dual-processor system.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. Whatever floats your boat.
Posted by: Crash on November 28, 2002 11:02 PMMacs are for doody-heads!
Blow the money on booze and drugs and loose women, and hire a kid for peanuts to type up your wacked-out screeds instead!
Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on November 28, 2002 11:56 PM...er, not that your screeds are especially wacked-out, of course, but after all those chemicals, they just might be.
Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on November 28, 2002 11:56 PMNo, I can't take the money, Stav. It's the computer or nothing, not a sausage - something to do with tax.
Besides, I've always used Macs, apart from the last two, rather miserable years. For writing, this noisy, ugly thing in front of me, even though it's supposedly stacked and the Nokia screen is very big, is depressing.
I suppose I want to go back to a single, does-everything, self-sufficient object, like my first and latest Mac. It's more like a proper pen.
PCs look like...offices and small firms and spreadsheet thingies.
Posted by: Miguel on November 29, 2002 12:10 AMThough I admire the way you sound just like Doctor Hunter Thompson at his very best! ;)
Posted by: Miguel on November 29, 2002 12:12 AMMy advice: Macs are pretty.
Sorry, I'm not very technical.
Posted by: shane on November 29, 2002 12:20 AMd00d--One of us. One of us.
Mac all the way, babe. You can buy yourself a titanium, and have a secondary monitor when you want to use it as a desktop, or you can carry it with you when you go on outings. For instance, when you show up in my bathtub, you can write your errata and credos and screeds while you wait for me to roll in from an all-nighter. You'll be so portable. And then you can hop on the Airport and send everything lickety-split to those yokels over the pond who read your prose.
OR! you can buy the iBook for much less money, still have a secondary monitor (although it will only mirror your laptop screen). And then you can spend the rest of the budget on printers and Airport cards and other necessary items. Mac Mac Mac.
(Although I still think OSX sux).
Posted by: readymade on November 29, 2002 12:30 AMWell, I recommend against the Dell machines. First, they don't have a real reset button, so you have to hard reboot if windows freezes...which of course, it will. Second, they load it with all kinds of crap that takes forever to get off the box. Third, they're slow performers. My Dells have been nothing but trouble, I really regret buying them.
Recently, we've been swapping our Dells out for Alienware boxes, and I swear by them. They are truly amazing bits of machinery.
Posted by: dejah420 on November 29, 2002 12:55 AMI've also heard Alienware machines are the goat's testicles.
Uhh, meaning they're good, I should probably say. But do they ship to Lisbon?
Hey you bastards! Wake up, dammit! I've got a skinfull and I wanna talk about nebuchadnezzar and the Power and Beauty of 'It's a Mad Mad Mad MAd Mad Mad Mad World'.
Fuckin' timezones.
Ha! No more than one "l" in skinful, my beautifull, hopefull, willfull, wonderfull sackfull of offall! ;)
Posted by: Miguel on November 29, 2002 08:11 AM I wanna talk nebuchadnezzar
Did William Vollman ever make any of our lit lists? There is an amazing retelling of the Nebuchadnezzar story in his book Rainbow Stories. If you haven't read him, this is a good place to start. I think over the winter break I might start his historical novels about the populating of North America. Highly, highly recommended author.
Migs I also suggest a powerbook. My only machine is a clamshell iBook 466MHz DVD, 320 MB RAM, Airport, running OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). Incredible machine. The only problems I have had are ones that a caused myself, screwing around with hinckey software. It took a while but I swear by OS X. Unbelievably customizable and totally intuitive. Networking is a breeze. Wireless rocks. Don't believe a word about macs being slower or not able to do certain things. Total uninformed lies. Support is good too. If you get a laptop (see recent article about scorched scrotum) portable machine, you should get the extended three year Apple Care plan, just in case. Maybe for desktop too.
The thing is Miguel, you say that you only have modest needs but as soon as you get one of these machines you will not be able to keep yourself from trying everything out.
Anyone get my mixes yet?
Yo, yo, yo...wait just a cotton-pickin' minute here, shouldn't we be keeping it in the family here? Give cow-monkey brotha adampsyche a call here and just make monkey-noises into the phone...
Posted by: jonmc on November 29, 2002 09:32 AMMake Mine a Mac.
I've used them for all of my computing years and I've never done wrong. Right now, I have an ugly brown G3 (from right before the return of Jobs), 333mhz, 6 gig drive, 92 megs of ram. Yeah, it's not pretty, but it does what it's supposed to.
Miguel, also consider that you can keep the mammoth screen you have now and just buy a $20 converter to use with your mac.
Also consider the following purchases (you know, for "Work" related stuff):
* Make sure you can burn cds with it
* Get them to throw in a small digital camera
* A cheap scanner would be nice
Your friends were half-right: .exe attachments will not open on your Mac, but since half of them are the computer equivalent of "the clap", who cares? You can still open dirty pictures, you can still watch little clips of monkeys drinking their own urine.
*Oh, one more thing, make them get you a high speed connection.
Posted by: ColdChef on November 29, 2002 10:13 AMI have have never been sent a .exe attachment that was necessary. CC is right though. they will not open and thank god they don't. So migs, is this a loaner or are they going to let you keep it forever?
Posted by: anathema on November 29, 2002 10:24 AMFunny, I'm dithering over the same choice as Miguel is: top-end iMac or low-end tower. (I'm currently using an iBook 600/combo/12", love it to pieces.) I can see a use for a DVD burner for myself, but that's probably overkill in Miguel's case.
Being a builder of peecee boxen, and worked on maks. Go with whatever you're the most comfortable with and think you'll have the least issues with.
that said. Alienware PCs fucking rock.
Posted by: tj on November 29, 2002 10:27 AMJust to clarify, I was absolutely not suggesting buying a Dell (no way would I want anyone I know to fund any more of their asinine commercials), I was saying I'd build my own, similar to that Dell, specs-wise.
Now my conscience is clear.

Posted by: mcwetboy on November 29, 2002 11:08 AMWow, talk about support!
Anathema, it's a loaner-keeper, if I keep up my end of the bargain - tnen I can buy it for peanuts.
I guess my quandary now is:
1) Do I go for the ugly, uncoordinated, slightly more expensive basic dual G4 (which is expandable)with the 17" display;
or
2) Do I go for the purty, coordinated (but not expandable, RAM apart), slightly cheaper 800/80 imac with the 17" display
or
3) Do I get drunk and buy one of those massive teenager's wet dream Alienware monsters?
I'll ask in the shop. Wish jonmc went back to sales for one day... he'd sort me out. Wooncha? I don't want a portable because I write enough as it is. And I hate batteries.
Mucho thankeroos, amigos and amigas!
Posted by: Miguel on November 29, 2002 11:23 AMMcwetboy: let's keep in touch about our common dilemma, OK? First guy to buy the ???? (whatever turns out to be the best choice next year when Macs get their 64-bit IBM chips) wins! ;)

I'm astonished (and pleased) to see that the erudite men and thundersluts of 9622 are, by and large, of the Applish persuasion. Hurrah!
Merry Hannukah to you all. Especially the Jewish ones. Anyone have good websites for Jews who stopped believing in God, erev Rosh Hashanah?
Anathema - your mixes arrived a couple of days ago. Have now listened, and am prepared to do a report. Ditto for you, jonmc. Please navigate to the reviews thread, and thank-you so much, once again!

As so it was like beep, beep. And that's when I decided to switch to a Mac. They don't have any exposed orifices for our long skinny friends to crawl into.
Evidently Macs are critter-proof.
Stavros:
The original 'It's a Mad(etc) World' was great. I could swear it had 5 'Mads' in the title, though. I remember counting everytime I watched it as a kid. But now I think it has been shortened to 4. They pruned it of a 'Mad'! Am I right? The new version doesn't really compare, Mr Bean or no.
Posted by: shane on November 29, 2002 02:31 PMApropos of absolutely nothing my local classic rock station is doing a top 1043 songs of all time countdown. Most bipolars hate Christmas. Christmas cantatas, presents to buy, stuff to cook, sappy christmas songs, and Wal-mart (or is that Wall-hell? I HATE crowds.)Not to mention having to spend spend spend.
Besides, Jesus was most likely born in March.
And pleeeeezzzze don't make me watch any version of "It's a Wonderful Life".
The only thing that I can stand is "A Christmas Carol". From Mr. Magoo to George C. Scott to Kermit the frog...I just love any version I see.

We're looking at getting Dell systems now, just because we've waited too long to upgrade and can get the machines we want under a grand each.

through an employ purchase plan, with 2 year payback plan: I can purchase an IBook G3 800 for $1860.00
or
new Imac with 17" for 2034.00.
Not having anyone around my parts who use one, your assistance would be appreciated. I've only worked on IBM pcs. I first used a computer for engineering needs, like fortran. so I'm a newbie to apple, but as I would I would use it more for media & writing I take it this is the way to go.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on January 31, 2003 03:36 PMthom, see if you can get a deal on a emac...lower end than those, but G4 chip like the imac, and only like a thousand bucks....
If you're not using it for highend stuff it's a good starter mac : >
Yes amber with some research, I've noticed they are hosing me with the price, but then agian it's an iterest free loan. But a G4 would be a better buy.
Ana the 17"Ibooks not on the list for me to buy, that is why I've e-mail HR to find out when they will update their list of available products.
They have some nice Dell, which I think would be a waste even though the Dells on paper look like a better buy.
Thanks for the push to Apple. Hope to update you soon with the outcome. This thread has served some purpose.
Dude. The Dells are hella cheap, yo.
I just picked mine up for about 750$. Sure, it may not look like a lamp or whisper soothing cultist anthems, but it works!
