January 16, 2003 : OK, seriously....

Who would win?

Posted by jpoulos at January 16, 2003 03:35 PM

People have said these things about that :

Mankind.

Posted by: ColdChef on January 16, 2003 03:40 PM

Atom Ant would rain down upon Underdog with furious vengeance. Unless Underdog had his Macy's Day Parade balloon of himself with him. Then it might get ugly.

Atom Ant is super-strong and good and clean-living. Underdog, I submit to you, is at this very moment probably fighting a guy for beer money in a dive bar.

Posted by: kafkaesque on January 16, 2003 03:40 PM

Wonder Dog, because he lasted longer, the cartoon time, if I recall correctly.

You had a part I & Part II,...no.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on January 16, 2003 03:46 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Underdog gets his powers from taking a pill. Isn't that kind of thing frowned upon nowadays?

Atom Ant is apparently a double amputee, being an insect with only four limbs. There's also the possibility that you can take him out with a can of Raid.

Hmm. Tough call. They could both beat the living crap out of Aquaman, though. Unless he was telepathically controlling Jabberjaw.

Posted by: Mars Crash on January 16, 2003 03:51 PM

Don't even mess with Aquaman. Unless you want a herd of Brine Shrimp knockin on yer door.

Posted by: kafkaesque on January 16, 2003 03:52 PM

There's also the possibility that you can take him out with a can of Raid.

I always assumed that he was "Atom" Ant because radioactivity had given him his superpowers. I seriously doubt that anything in an aerosol can is gonna phase him. He thrives on that shit.

Posted by: jpoulos on January 16, 2003 03:54 PM

I'm sure that you meant to type "sea monkeys" instead of "brine shrimp," kaf.

Posted by: Mars Crash on January 16, 2003 03:55 PM

Underdog, no contest. He had the voice of Wally Cox.

No more odd couple could be imagined than the mousy Wally Cox and his life-long friend and one-time roommate Marlon Brando. The two roomed together when Brando came to New York to study with Stella Adler, but Cox ultimately moved out because he could no longer stand Brando?s pet raccoon. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Cox sprang into the nation?s consciousness when he was cast as school teacher ?Robinson Peepers? in the 1952 TV series Mr. Peepers...

Boxing or street fight?

Posted by: Unclefes on January 16, 2003 03:57 PM

Looka the bazooka on that guy! Whadya mean, who would win?

Posted by: readymade on January 16, 2003 03:58 PM

Shrimp don't scare me none. I've got batter and a Frybaby and I'm not afraid to use them.

Posted by: jonmc on January 16, 2003 03:58 PM

Hong Kong Phooey would win.

Posted by: adampsyche on January 16, 2003 03:59 PM

Adam Ant's gotten a little boobalicious since I last saw him.

Posted by: Unclefes on January 16, 2003 03:59 PM

I can't believe it's even a question:

I rest my case.

Posted by: readymade on January 16, 2003 04:08 PM

sorry readymade, the Grapeape would just be saying "sorry, beagliebeaglie"

Evil Gleek on the other hand would kick their candy asses with his marital aid of doom.

Posted by: tj on January 16, 2003 04:13 PM

Dudes (and dudettes), they would all so totally get their asses kicked by the coolest agent ever:

Posted by: Crash on January 16, 2003 04:25 PM

Yes, yes. I'm sure it would be all fun and games until this lil' guy shows up and kicks some ass:

Posted by: pardon me on January 16, 2003 04:27 PM

twice

Posted by: jonmc on January 16, 2003 04:27 PM

This is the coolest secret agent ever.

Posted by: Mars Crash on January 16, 2003 04:29 PM

But if were talking tag teams, I gotta go with these guys

Posted by: jonmc on January 16, 2003 04:33 PM

i think eyepatches are cool, myself.

in fact, i've been trying (rather half-heartedly, i suppose) to lose an eye -- just the one, mind you. i work in the metal shop without safety glasses, i run with scissors, and i molest pigeons at nearby parks.

it's just a matter of time, really, before i'm DANGERFISH! DANGERFISH! DANGERFIIIIISHH!

Posted by: fishfucker on January 16, 2003 05:22 PM

This whole site just broke the first two rules of hypothetical cartoon fight club.

I hit post once. interesting.

Posted by: dong_resin on January 16, 2003 05:24 PM

hiya, fucker. Eye patches....anyone see Living in Oblivion?

Posted by: anathema on January 16, 2003 05:27 PM

you guys sadden me.

Igoo rules all!!!

Posted by: ufez on January 16, 2003 05:29 PM

I've seen Living in Oblivion. That was me all addle-brained in film school a few years ago. Why do you ask?

Posted by: readymade on January 16, 2003 05:51 PM

speaking of eyepatches:

apparently Aquaman is an even bigger wuss as a villain

Posted by: evil tj on January 16, 2003 06:01 PM

Hey, look, Aquaman just hurt his eye being all manly and saving some fine, fine ladies from certain inconveniece, aided by a crafty shrimp cocktail and 3-Pc Fish and Chips.

Posted by: kafkaesque on January 16, 2003 06:40 PM

Speaking of TV superheroes, is anybody going to watch Anil Dash and Oliver Willis on PBS tonite?

Posted by: tizzie on January 16, 2003 08:23 PM

I made a post linking to that pbs thing last night, with only the words 'Oh, fuck off.'

Then I deleted it.

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on January 16, 2003 08:27 PM

Who?

(heh heh).

Posted by: readymade on January 16, 2003 08:29 PM

Do you think it'll be a waste of time?

I'll fall asleep after i finish this brandy anyway, so it's a bit of a moot point, but I'm curious.

Posted by: tizzie on January 16, 2003 08:34 PM

Posted by: tizzie on January 16, 2003 08:35 PM

I am curious. Twice.

Posted by: tizzie on January 16, 2003 08:36 PM

Things are getting curiouser and curiouser.

Posted by: readymade on January 16, 2003 08:39 PM

I dunno, tiz. It might just RAWK. Perhaps it's sour grapes, a bit, at seeing others recognized and wishing it were me (although I'd show up for any interview drunk and wearing Groucho glasses, and insist my name was Corky The Magic Paperboy, and curse and fart and abuse the interviewer, just to be difficult), perhaps it's fear that the co-optation has begun in earnest.

Congrats to Oliver and Anil, of course (the other two are mysteries to me), but I find it somehow a confirmation of my most pessimistic convictions about all of this that OW, who has so consistently and shameless begged for this kind of recognition, to the extent that I stopped visiting his site because it embarrassed me to read the 'please please please put me on TeeVee' posts and schemes, has finally been...put on TV.

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on January 16, 2003 08:41 PM

That said, though, it's clear I'm not really sure what I think about this, because I just posted this related semirant on linkwhoring etc at Shelley's a short while ago.

Sorry to go all serious, monkeys. Spank me!

..please?

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on January 16, 2003 08:45 PM

I'm thinking it's a safe bet that it won't rawk, heh.

I'm fascinated that they wound up with two Mefi bloggers... just a roll of the dice, I suppose.

Posted by: tizzie on January 16, 2003 08:46 PM

Bend over, sunshine.

Posted by: tizzie on January 16, 2003 08:47 PM

Roxanne, you don't have to wear that dress tonight, walk the streets for money, who cares if it's wrong or if it's right....

Posted by: tizzie on January 16, 2003 09:01 PM

I can't watch it. Neither of our two public stations are carrying it.

Fuckers.

Posted by: Crash on January 16, 2003 09:17 PM

Hey, as long as we'reI'm tossing about epithets, it's a good time to urge you all to go find your Dutch porn star names.

That link is SFW, regardless of what the URL leads you to believe.

Mine's Teunis Van Dijck.

Posted by: Crash on January 16, 2003 09:25 PM

So is this like a blogger reality show? Do they have to complete arduous tasks while sharing a single jug of coffee, one cold pizza, and a dial-up modem, or risk getting voted off the internet by their peers? Will there be hot interblogger sex?

Posted by: Nico Coppels on January 16, 2003 09:32 PM

Oh, wait...it's PBS. Nevermind.

Posted by: liam on January 16, 2003 09:34 PM

I like Oliver personally, I genuinely wish him all the success he can grab, yet at the same time he has succeeded in his quest to make me think of him as Oliver Willis®.
His every utterance seems Fox News-like in it's prepose and depth.
He belongs on TV, with the other brands.

Posted by: dong_resin on January 16, 2003 10:14 PM

Most definitely, I hasten to agree, lest I come off as a total parade-pee-er-oner.

Posted by: stavrosthecrankytrousers on January 16, 2003 10:25 PM

Wilhelmus Van Dyke.

I guess Dick's gone into porn.

Posted by: jonmc on January 16, 2003 10:34 PM

Heh. Dick ...Porn. I just noticed that. Oh man I'm fuckin wasted...

Posted by: jonmc on January 16, 2003 10:35 PM

A cultural void has been filled.

Posted by: jonmc on January 16, 2003 11:10 PM

jon, I thought you quit the sauce?

Do you remember Dermot Mulroony's character, "Wolf" from that film, ready?

Posted by: anathema on January 16, 2003 11:11 PM

I quit quitting. Don't mind me. I'll be fine. I don't wear puritanism well.

Look Kotter comix!!

Posted by: jonmc on January 16, 2003 11:18 PM

Even the comix version of Gabe Kaplan looks like an ersatz porn star.

Posted by: dong_resin on January 16, 2003 11:27 PM

hunh hunh hunh

Posted by: horshack on January 16, 2003 11:40 PM

I just saw the PBS media matters peice.
I say all four came off very well, and this was the best piece on webblogs I've seen yet, but extra big fucking kudos to Anil Dash for succinctly making the delineation between culture and commerce.

Posted by: dong_resin on January 16, 2003 11:56 PM

Elecktra Van Longwijk

seeks other Longwijk for meaningful all-niter. hyuck, hyuck.

Evidently, my Dutch porn name is døng_resin.

Posted by: døng_resin on January 17, 2003 12:20 AM

When, shortly after receiving my teaching certification (a not very cunning ruse to remain another coupla years at university and drink with my buddies and buddettes some more), I returned to my hometown to begin a four-month teaching contract at my old high school, I was serenaded with the Welcome Back Kotter theme by my first grade 12 class, and greeted with a 'Welcome Back Kovacs' banner.

It was touching, in a terrifying kind of way.

Teunis Cockelspel

Posted by: anathema on January 17, 2003 07:32 AM

Minnii Baerbajk checkin' in here on the female side.

Dutch porn and masturbating cats (other thread) - I clearly have to start staying up for the night shows around this place.

Posted by: boomchicka on January 17, 2003 07:33 AM

* Ahem. * Back at the ranch, I'd say "Underdog" -- he has the better theme song. C'mon, do YOU guys hum the "Atom Ant" theme on a regular basis?

Do ya?

Uh...oh...

(And even though this question is in context, it seems curiously out of...so DASH DASH DASH! There, that's better.)

Posted by: roe/metrocake on January 17, 2003 07:35 AM

Gah!

Messrs. Ant and Dog would stop their deathmatch in midswing and band together with the cartoon Sweathogs, the cartoon Globetrotters, Oliver the TV Personality, blind Aquaman, Cool McCool and the metaphorical Magilla Gorilla on jonmc's back to get that dude a robe or a big blankie or a date or something.

(I'd bet.)

Why not join in and say something too?
