March 04, 2003 : Time For A New Thread

Dedicated to the proposition that people take it all a little too darn seriously sometimes. Come on, give us a hug, pithikophile brethren!

Posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at March 04, 2003 06:27 AM

People have said these things about that :

..and sistren, too, of course. Rowr!

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on March 4, 2003 06:32 AM

Stavros, I could kiss you. That's probably the biggest laugh I'll get all day, and it's only 7:22 am here.
*puts black shades back on and slinks into the blue shadows*

Posted by: b***Yfire on March 4, 2003 07:23 AM

Happy Fat Tuesday, you sweet monkeys!

*gives doughnuts and kisses to all*

Posted by: tizzie on March 4, 2003 08:18 AM

I will keep up with this one. Damn, I'm moving to Korea if that's what the news is like. Did anyone else see the "monkey" issue of the New York Times Magazine on February 23? I'll compile some links from it soon.

Posted by: anathema on March 4, 2003 08:29 AM

Oh boy, am I glad to be back here! I think I still have blood running from my head after that shitfight. Sorry kaf and clav got dragged in.

**looks up winsomely with puppy dog eyes**

Forgive me?

Posted by: jonmc on March 4, 2003 08:52 AM

Wait a damn minute, did somebody say MARDI GRAS??

I gots me a shitload of beads here....

Posted by: jonmc on March 4, 2003 08:54 AM

Shitfight?

I don't even want to know.

Posted by: adampsyche on March 4, 2003 08:54 AM

Oh. That shitfight.

Posted by: adampsyche on March 4, 2003 09:04 AM

That was fucking nasty. And one of the reasons why I will always prefer monkeys to pancakes.

Now who's gonna give me some beads?

Posted by: romakimmy on March 4, 2003 09:58 AM

**swings beads wildly above forehead, smacking self several times in the process**

Posted by: jonmc on March 4, 2003 10:00 AM

why do i always miss the shit fights?

Posted by: witchstone on March 4, 2003 10:17 AM

I still don't know which shitfight you're all referring to... hope me!

Posted by: jpoulos on March 4, 2003 10:17 AM

P.U., that's some stinky fighting. C'mere and let me get that poo out from behind your left ear, Migs.

Posted by: tizzie on March 4, 2003 11:46 AM

*gingerly extends neck, whimpering for sympathy

Posted by: tizzie on March 4, 2003 12:09 PM

hey, what am I, chopped liver??

Posted by: jonmc on March 4, 2003 12:20 PM

I don't need no stinking beads. I remember what you have to do to GET them if you are female and over the age of consent.

I do miss them moon pie parades down in Pensacola.

Posted by: b***Yfire on March 4, 2003 12:21 PM

I think that whole thing was fucking embarassing, including some unnecessarily churlish behavior from people I thought would know better.

Posted by: kaf on March 4, 2003 12:25 PM

So instead of boobs for beads we get bums for baked goods? Sounds cool to me. My sister lives half an hour from Pensycola, I'll have to give her a head's up.

Posted by: ufez on March 4, 2003 12:27 PM

Or a bottom's up. Either way!

Posted by: tizzie on March 4, 2003 12:36 PM

God bless. Just read that MetaTalk thread.

*sigh*

I feel very sad for those who claim to hate an individual they know on-line. Very sad indeed.

Posted by: brittney on March 4, 2003 01:24 PM

Good god, that was one of the fugliest threads I've read since I-don't-know-when. Who peed in everyone's corn-flakes?

And why did the mask come off in that thread, where everyone was revealed to be a monster? It was such a non-event...completely bizarre. It was like a spontaneous vitriol contest.

I'm sorry all. That was very icky--I will apply first aid where necessary. Scotch, anyone?

Posted by: readymade on March 4, 2003 02:21 PM

I feel kinda guilty. It seems it was my (joking) admonition telling anapestic to relax that started the whole mess.

I feel like schleprock.

Posted by: jonmc on March 4, 2003 02:33 PM

How can one comment that is generally pretty rote there be the match that set the tinderbox ablaze? You may have made the initial comment, but you can't tell me that fireball was because you told someone to relax. People were positively begging for a fight.

But think of it this way: maybe it will be civilized there again now that the air has cleared.

Posted by: readymade on March 4, 2003 02:38 PM

"because you told someone to relax"

That's not really a true assessment of the situation, and surely not the words that were used. If you approach things in ganging up type of manner, and leap to people's defense merely because you are familiar with them, you are going to get responses like the ones seen in that thread.

People are resentful mostly because of this: Some posters have truned the place into somewhere to show off, to post things just to say they posted on MeFi. The site was meant to be a repository of stuff found while doing other things, not the whole point of surfing in the first place.

But,it grew too big, and became very inclusive. C'est la vie. The LCD wins.

Posted by: kaf on March 4, 2003 02:46 PM

I agree.

Posted by: ufez on March 4, 2003 03:03 PM

None the less, kaf, considering Miggsy's relative restraint as of late I found the vitrol from the self proclaimed Old Skool really fucking obnoxious. The innuendo, the bringing-up of old grudges, the general sentiment of "It's YOUR fault this site isn't what it used to be" blah blah blah in a post commemorating The Grey's creation (which, correct me if I'm wrong, was created to siphon off discussions over etiquette/bugs/etc from the Blue) was lame. Fucktasticaly lame. Self policing is one thing, but for the love of God's hairy nutsack, get over it.

[/end mini rant]
Jonmc gimme those beads before you hurt yourself, darling.

Posted by: romakimmy on March 4, 2003 03:16 PM

So I go down for a week with bronchitis, and to wake up to this ugliness... eugh.

All I see in that thread is a bunch of people who (apparently) needed to blow off some steam running into each other and having a little dustup. Yes, almost everyone stepped over the line (maybe more than) a little bit. Yeah, there was a bit of a battle royal there. But sometimes you need to just let the hate flow.

(And about the now-quite-unwarranted-far-as-I-can-tell Miguel hatred: like Mickey Rourke said in Barfly, "Hatred. It's the only thing that lasts.")

Nothing wrong in that. I didn't see anyone get really hurt, past a few bruised psyches and maybe some holes in the fabric of the little cliques between Blue and here and elsewhere.

Jon, Kaf, Mig, BF, let me top up yer drinks, and pull up a seat here and let those wounds heal. You'll be back in fighting (or loving, whichever) shape in no time, I promise.

Posted by: Chico on March 4, 2003 03:25 PM

Oh my god, how did I miss that Mormon thread, ufez?

Dammit.

I thought there was only one zealot on MeFi, but now I know there are two! Of course, there are a few of us exes there, so it's all good.

Posted by: witchstone on March 4, 2003 03:27 PM

relax v. laxative....at least they both have "lax" in them?

So it was a lame paraphrase, but the sentiment is still there: no matter how crude an admonition the initial comment was, that firestorm seemed somehow destined to blow up. People seemed to desire an excuse to let the bile flow freely. But again, maybe the air will clear, and the site will move on square wheels as usual.

I think that people make "cliques" naturally, and for people who post with regularity, you begin to learn which side of the fence you fall on and with whom. It's human nature to group. It may not be pretty, but I think it just happens, even if you try to be equitable and fair to all.

For me, other things have replaced MeFi more or less, and I never commented there much anyway, so it's academic to me. I just thought it was a sad display, and made me physically cringe. It reminded me of some of the first threads I read that made me question whether I would ever post there often. Over time, I've answered myself: no.

Posted by: readymade on March 4, 2003 03:40 PM

I'm with readymade. I was never much of a contributor at MetaFilter, and today's display is precisely why.

That said, I present the following highly humorous link in light of today's MeTa thread:

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on March 4, 2003 05:55 PM

Wow...that was really ugly. Glad I stayed out of it. I come bearing gifts of cognac and cigars to the wounded!

Hey, you know what would make you feel better? (Besides the girls "working" for Mardi Gras beads?) Baby pictures. Who doesn't feel better after seeing a happy baby?

Posted by: dejah420 on March 4, 2003 06:04 PM

I think that people make "cliques" naturally, and for people who post with regularity, you begin to learn which side of the fence you fall on and with whom.

I found some amusing thoughts from reading some of those comments involving cliques. Also cliques may be the problem they have, don't feel in one, so mad & no one else should have fun either.
It's the I'm left out of life adolescence deal.

Also, I'm wondering, really who & whom are looking to get laid through Meta-filter by posting on it. Then the whole google linking thing too, when did that game start, you're linking to get google points. I hope this an oversight of thoughts. But I have the feeling that some people who are living through their computers as a way to avoid people are now mad that it didn't work. The one's they avoided are now back for them to read their words through the net. This is what I'm taking when they say: the site is ruined by X.

To be frank, those who live through an internet connection have me re-thinking; maybe more of the weirdoes you see in public, need to logon.

Ps, I may be weird, lone in thought, but if posting will get me sex and linking will win me a computer, will some please let me know these things, so I won't go out in public.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on March 4, 2003 06:07 PM

I'm always looking to get laid on Metafilter. I thought that was obvious.

Posted by: anathema on March 4, 2003 09:01 PM

Under no circumstances should you leave the carafe out while brewing coffee. Sure, letting the water steep in the basket for a minute or two can help make your coffee a wee bit stronger, but spillage of a pot of coffee (my first coffee of the day, no less! aiee!!) down the sides of the pot and cupboards is a bitch to clean up.

Posted by: adampsyche on March 4, 2003 09:40 PM

that is, if you leave it there and forget about it.

Posted by: adampsyche on March 4, 2003 09:42 PM

Stavros, I love that monkey newscast! But I've been wondering all day - what does "pithikophile" mean?

Posted by: tizzie on March 4, 2003 10:11 PM

Tizzie, my guess is "monkey lover". As in "lover of monkeys", rather than "very hairy boyfriend".

Posted by: whatnot on March 4, 2003 11:08 PM

hello !
are we allowed to step on this hallowed turf ?
ach , we're not welcome , not anywhere , no one wants an old scottish japester playing his violin with his old crippled hands....i'll just shuffle off to this park bench and sit in the rain..nobody wants you when you have red hair you know....*sniff*

Posted by: sgt.serenity on March 4, 2003 11:51 PM

All japesters are welcome. Well, almost all.

Posted by: anathema on March 5, 2003 12:34 AM

I just read the thing, and it just seems a purer distillation of the amber bile thing that happens in nearly every thread, boiled out by the usual suspects. It's that same vicious rodentine ideologism that was always there, but really sort of bled out after 9/11, until now it's the dominant topos, the lay of the blue land. Why should we be so surprised?

Bah, let them sup on their own pus. I'd rather fling poop with you people than froggily "debate" with their best.

But I've been wondering all day - what does "pithikophile" mean?

Tiz, I'm glad you asked, because I had to googlesearch to confirm that the suffix '-phile' was indeed Greek, then track down the Greek for 'ape' or 'monkey' (pithikos, as in australopithicus and so on), then cunningly meld the two words together in a operation of great delicacy and care. I spent entirely too much time doing this, but was quite proud of myself in the end.

Pithikophile is kind of like baklava, but with more hair in it.

phile=philo?

Posted by: readymade on March 5, 2003 03:19 AM

Also, I stole the chimp newsreader from somewhere (or did it while I was hammered perhaps - I found it in the seldom-travelled stygian folder-depths of my hard drive), so I don't deserve much credit for the photoshoppery at all. Bad wonderchicken!

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on March 5, 2003 04:01 AM

Good wonderchicken! You liberated the chimp, and your fellow pithikophiles salute you.

Now I only have to use pithikophile in 4 more sentences today, heh.

In the words of Zelda Rubinstein: "Cross over, children. All are welcome. All are welcome. Come into the Light..."

Except John Ashcroft. He can go to hell.

You're not John Ashcroft, are you?

Posted by: jpoulos on March 5, 2003 09:51 AM

Wow. I just read that entire thread, and I'm glad we have Monkey Island as a refuge. I'm an outsider to the whole Metafilter thing, but there sure are some cranky bastards over there. Why don't the disgruntled few carve out their own slice of wwwebby pie like our heroic admins did?

I believe my little brother said it first on the mother thread, and here I repeat his words of wisdom:

Monkeys are funny.

As much as I'm (justifiably) disliked here right now, I don't think it's fair to say that other sites that may or may not have inspired 9622 are better or worse.

9622 is a great site and serves the same purpose other mefi spinoff sites do -- to reduce resource usage on the mothership so it can do what it does best, whatever it is that is.

You folk have a good thing here.

In Roman mythology, "lemurs" are the spirits of the departed.

Christ, you'd think the Oxford Dictionary could be a little more precise. I mean, that could be "the absinthe of someone who's left the room for a crap".

A note about posting images:

We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found here. Thanks.
