March 05, 2003 : Can't stop the music!

It feels like it's been long enough...

Can we get another CD Swap going?

Also posed for discussion: (a) What are you listening to these days? and (b) what moldy-oldy have you dusted off lately? For me: (a) Twos' disk from the last Swap, it get better with each play, PLUS the James Bond theme, to put me in the right frame of mind to kick ass in the corporate arena, and (b) Ian Anderson's Walk Into Light, on vinyl no less

Posted by at March 05, 2003 10:23 AM

People have said these things about that :

Doesn't TJ still owe discs from last time?

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 10:33 AM

I think he still owes disks from the last couple Mefi swaps.

Posted by: Fes on March 5, 2003 10:38 AM

How about we all chew some gum, put it in an envelope and swap that instead?

Posted by: jonmc on March 5, 2003 10:47 AM

So, you're definitely in then?

Posted by: Fes on March 5, 2003 10:53 AM

I'm in.

Posted by: ColdChef on March 5, 2003 10:54 AM

Speaking from receiving one, The Commish, Rocks.
Plus it opened the door for me to also receive a 9622net lapel/badge pin, home-spun by him too.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on March 5, 2003 10:55 AM

Maybe we should do it differently this time.

We can set a date for discs to be done. Then, we'll see who's finished and decide then who swaps with whom. Only those who have a disc in hand on the day of the deadline will received discs. The deadline is final, and if you don't have a disc ready, you can't be part of the official swap.

Thoughts?

Posted by: jpoulos on March 5, 2003 10:58 AM

Sounds good to me. jp, since I brought it up, you want I should administrate?

Posted by: Fes on March 5, 2003 10:59 AM

I still want to see what kind of response we get here before committing to the swap, but yeah, you should probably administrate.

Posted by: jpoulos on March 5, 2003 11:04 AM

I thus name myself Administratator. I hope you'll let me call upon you for advice as needed...?

Posted by: Fes on March 5, 2003 11:05 AM

I'd like to be in. I hope TJ's slackerdom doesn't count against me.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 11:09 AM

I got a tj disk.

Posted by: adampsyche on March 5, 2003 11:27 AM

Yeh, I'd be up for it.

a.

some old Gun Club
Dead Man and Ghost Dog Soundtracks
70s Rolling Stones
Dirty Three (She Has No Strings Apollo)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Spoon
Blade Runner Soundtrack
Swans

b.

Flock of Seagulls - Wishing
Thomas Dolby - One of Our Submarines

and we went to hear a string quartet last night, which was very nice. Beethoven and Borodin.

I'm also all aquiver for the start of the baseball season, so I can sit rapt, listening to netcasts of my Giants again.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 11:34 AM

I'm in. I dig lupo's idea, but no lying, dammit. And I won't comment on tj's lack of swap cd's from last time. I swore I wouldn't bring it up anymore.

Posted by: ufez on March 5, 2003 11:38 AM

Yes on the pre-burning idea.

No longer will I have to howl my impotent rage into an uncaring night sky. Well, not about CDs anyway.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 11:44 AM

Also, I have gotten two great CDs from TJ. True, it was long ago, but they were indeed full of love.

Like me. I'm full of love. and Rice crackers.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 11:56 AM

I think I'd be into it, now that I have been given (unbeknownst to the powers-that-be at work) an imac with a cd burner. As long as we won't be judged on sound engineering. I'm still kinda weak at that. (Administrator, please hope me!)

Bring on the Gun Club!

Posted by: cowboy_sally on March 5, 2003 11:57 AM

I also have no clue about sound engineering. But I know a lot about rice crackers. I've found that this has helped me bluff my way through many potentially embarassing "technical" situations.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 11:59 AM

Speaking as your self-appointed Swapinistratator, you are definitely on your own, engineering-wise.

Posted by: Fes on March 5, 2003 12:01 PM

Oh yeah:

a)

The Echo & the Bunnymen box set
old mix tapes I found while cleaning my room
WXRT in Chicago (just got back a week ago, a damn fine station)
Howlin' Wolf
Radiohead

b)

Psychotic Reaction - Count Five
Love My Way - Psychadelic Furs

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 12:12 PM

Is there any extra material on the box set, or is it all the regular albums?

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 12:17 PM

I don't listen to music.

Posted by: jonmc on March 5, 2003 12:20 PM

There's a bunch of unreleased stuff, including a version of "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo" that's way better than the released one. Also two versions of a song called "Angels and Devils" that was recorded for "Ocean Rain" that I've been looking for forever. I had it on a bootleg, but the versions here aren't as good. Isn't that always how it goes?

A quick tally has fourteen previously unreleased tracks, but some of them are just slightly different versions of the ones on the album. It's worth it, though. The last disc is mostly live stuff.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 12:23 PM

...Also, I just popped in jpoulos' masterpiece "Falling In, Falling Out" while going through CDs to rip. Most excellent.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 12:31 PM

The early Poulos work shows great promise. Who would have predicted the eerie, chaotic backslide into the Counting Crows back catalogue? (I kid)

This time I'm really going to put some Ultravox on my mix. Then you'll be sorry.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 12:34 PM

I...oh, how do I say this...I...

I had "Reap the Wild Wind" on a vinyl 12-inch single.

Oh, the shame.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 12:38 PM

My brother!

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 12:39 PM

There's some people I'd like you to meet, Mars. We get together on the weekends and wear lip gloss and skinny ties.

Say it, Mars! I'm a New Romantic and proud!

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 12:47 PM

Woohoo! A new disc swap. Monkey Business, take 2 will soon be in tha making.

Posted by: Ryan on March 5, 2003 12:55 PM

...Now where did I leave that ruffly pirate shirt with the oversized sleeves? Oh yeah, I think it's in the bottom of the laundry pile. Or as I call it, "1983."

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 12:55 PM

So unplug the jukebox
And do us all a favor
That music's lost its taste
So try another flavor...
Antmusic!

*This earworm brought to you free of charge*

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 12:58 PM

Oh, all right. You know you're all jonesing for some more middle-of-the-road stuff.

Count me in.

Posted by: Crash on March 5, 2003 01:02 PM

Don't you ever
Don't you ever
Stop being dandy
Showing me your handsome

I wish more folks would sing in cockney accents.

Oh, and Mars? Somebody has been at your laundry.

Posted by: witchstone on March 5, 2003 01:10 PM

I thought I took care of the Ant problem at my house. Time to call Orkin again...

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 01:14 PM

Argh! You're, you're, you're dammit!

*implodes in grammatical fury*

Posted by: witchstone on March 5, 2003 01:15 PM

Ooooh. That had to hurt. She took it right in the apostrophe.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 01:18 PM

Adam and the Ants were one of the few two-drummer bands. I think Bow Wow had two for a while also.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 01:18 PM

or, you know, Bow Wow Wow.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 01:19 PM

a) Autechre - Confield
Sneaker Pimps - Bloodsport
Lo Fidelity Allstars - Don't Be Afraid of Love
Atari Teenage Riot - 60 Second Wipe Out
Meat Beat Manifesto - Actual Sounds + Voices
Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things
Meat Beat Manifesto - 99%

b) Bob Dylan - Infidels

Posted by: jpoulos on March 5, 2003 01:21 PM

I've just been enjoying some Meat Beat Manifesto off the site that shall not be named. My wife lives Atari Teenage Riot and Autechre.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 01:27 PM

She actually lives it?

You're a braver man than I am, Gunga Din.

Posted by: witchstone on March 5, 2003 01:30 PM

heh. Damn typos.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 01:33 PM

*pulls pants up to nipples in grandfatherly manner* The Grateful Dead also carried a two drummer lineup in the last few years.

Swapinistratively, we got:

me
chef
thomcatspike (inferred, since he's, as usual, nearly incomprehensible)
jpoulos
mars
kaf
ufez
cowboy_sally
ryan

Posted by: Fes on March 5, 2003 01:36 PM

I'm presently listening to Delirious.

On the other side, I like Enya.
(give me a break. I'm 44 and I like anything ethereal.)
So I'm sure you are all relieved I don't make discs, huh?

Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Plus Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow.
(a sausage biscuit to anyone who remembers THAT one.)

Posted by: b***Yfire on March 5, 2003 01:45 PM

Eddie Murphy's Delirious?

Guni Goo Goo.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 01:46 PM

*yanks fes's waistband down while yanking own up above head*

The Allman Brothers Band had two drummers (Butch Trucks & Jai Johanny Johannson) from the beginning. Little Feat had two drummers as well if you count congas.

As far as what I've been listening to lately. I like almost no new music that I've heard lately. I've been listening to the old standby's: The Replacements, The Ramones, The Who, Mott The Hoople. I've also discovered a sudden fondness for Dressy Bessy. Bruce Dickinson (of Iron Maiden's) classic scathing rip on Motley Crue, "Tattooed Millionaire" has been getting a lotta spins as well.

Last night I was feeling a might angry, so I cranked up some Black Sabbath, Exodus, Slayer and Anthrax.

I guess I'll be in the swap too. What the hell.

Posted by: jonmc on March 5, 2003 01:51 PM

If metrocake does it, she has to include one of her own songs.

Posted by: witchstone on March 5, 2003 01:52 PM

ok, can anyone else name a band with 2 bassists besides Ned's Atomic Dustbin?

Posted by: tj on March 5, 2003 01:59 PM

I think we should ALL include one of our own songs. I'll be doing my rendition of "Moon and New York City (Arthur's Theme)" by Christopher Cross.

I guess I'll be in the swap too. What the hell.

Sucker :)

Why on god's green earth woould you need TWO bassists?

Posted by: Fes on March 5, 2003 02:01 PM

Is it Hanson?

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:05 PM

No, I can't that's why I asked.

And Fes, chicks dig the low notes.

Posted by: tj on March 5, 2003 02:07 PM

DOS. Featuring Mike Watt and Kira Roessler.

Posted by: jonmc on March 5, 2003 02:08 PM

Girls Against Boys

Posted by: witchstone on March 5, 2003 02:10 PM

Don't Les Claypool's projects usually have multiple bassists? Or does it just sound that way?

Posted by: jpoulos on March 5, 2003 02:10 PM

Claypool sometimes lays down an extra bass track when recording, but other than that not really.

and thanks jon and witchy-- it was killing me that i couldn't remember

Posted by: tj on March 5, 2003 02:12 PM

Wow, can anyone name a moment in the past decade when anyone purposefully paired the words "Ned," "Atomic," and "Dustbin"? I hope those two bassists are grateful for the remembrance, wherever they are.

Eine kleine AntMusic for my homies.

9622.net: Watching us is stopping you from cruising Ugly Avenue.

Posted by: cowboy_sally on March 5, 2003 02:12 PM

And Fes, chicks dig the low notes.

Tis true, I have always had a thing for bass players. Well, since I was "of age," as they say. And chick bass players RAWK. Which I think was already discussed in a prior thread.

Posted by: witchstone on March 5, 2003 02:17 PM

Ah jeez. I was just going through some more stuff looking for songs to rip, and I found a Heaven 17 tape from 1982. I have really got to start throwing stuff out.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 02:19 PM

That's interesting: If you had two bass players, who would get less chicks?

The bass player phenomenon is interesting though, as they always seem to be the one guy that doesn't fit with the rest of the band.

Exhibit A: David J from Bauhaus.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:20 PM

Hey don't throw out Heaven 17! I love those guys!

What's next? Yazoo?

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:22 PM

Eddie Murphy's Delirious?

No, darlin'. Try the alternative Christian rock section.

Althought Eddie Murphy might be delirious, but there's nothing on Drudge Report about it.

Posted by: b***Yfire on March 5, 2003 02:23 PM

I'm in. (At least until the deadline).

Posted by: pardon me on March 5, 2003 02:26 PM

Hey, Bunny, have you heard of 16 Horsepower? They're a dark Southern sounding band, and the singer/songwriter is a major born-again.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:26 PM

I got a question for all the Adam Ant fans. How the hell can you stand him? I'm only half-kidding here, I've been hearing otherwise sane people rave about this yahoo for years and I still don't get it.

I mean I dont like the Smiths or the Cure or Duran Duran but I can see why someone might. As far as Mr. Ant goes I haven't the foggiest.

But then again I'm probably the only person east of the Mississippi and north of Kentucky who dug E*I*E*O, The Brandos, and Jason & the Scorchers so those are the vagaries of taste I suppose.

Posted by: jonmc on March 5, 2003 02:30 PM

You're absolutely right. No-one really liked Adam and the Ants. We're just messing with your head.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:32 PM

And Jason & The Scorchers are HUGE in Nevada.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:33 PM

Exhibit B: Michael Anthony

Posted by: jpoulos on March 5, 2003 02:34 PM

Try the alternative Christian rock section.

I got booted out of the alternative Christian rock section at Borders for whispering "Petra bites it" sotto voce.

Someone heard.

Posted by: Fes on March 5, 2003 02:35 PM

Jars of Clay may have produced the ultimate earworm with that 40 Days song.

Dear lord.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:36 PM

In my in-depth study of musicians, I've come up with a rough estimate of personalities:

Lead singer: major ego, feels tortured, drinks a lot
Guitarist: major ego with bitterness that lead singer gets more attention, also tortured and drinks a lot
Bassist: laid back, usually moderator in band fights
Drummer: fucking insane, anger management issues, usually starting fights with strangers, also drinks a lot

Posted by: witchstone on March 5, 2003 02:37 PM

Nope. No Yazoo, sorry. Could I interest you in some Lloyd Cole & the Commotions?

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 02:38 PM

I'll trade you for Kid Creole & The Cocoanuts.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:39 PM

I'll trade you for Kid Creole & The Cocoanuts.

Hmm. The server don't like this post.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:40 PM

But then again I'm probably the only person east of the Mississippi and north of Kentucky who dug E*I*E*O, The Brandos, and Jason & the Scorchers so those are the vagaries of taste I suppose.

there are lots of people with broad taste in music.

Posted by: jpoulos on March 5, 2003 02:40 PM

Oh, I realize that. I just never met anyone in my part of the country who liked that stuff at least not back when I was 16. Probably a big part of the reason I felt like a weirdo a lotta the time.

Posted by: jonmc on March 5, 2003 02:44 PM

Just jumping in with a "me too!" regarding the hots-for-bass-players discussion. Something about them laying down the beat, taking a back seat to the flashy guitar, and oh my, that bent wrist action.

Four strings is all you need, baby, all you need.

Posted by: brittney on March 5, 2003 02:45 PM

...Another thing I discovered while going through my music. You know that song "Free Nelson Mandela" by Special AKA? It worked! Those fellas oughta be proud of themselves.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 02:45 PM

Why I love Adam Ant:

a) the songs--they're fun, dammit! Adam Ant made punk fun! have you actually heard songs besides "Goody Two Shoes"?
b) the accent
c) the make-up
d) costumes! highwayman or pirate, you can't go wrong!

Posted by: witchstone on March 5, 2003 02:47 PM

thomcatspike (inferred, since he's, as usual, nearly incomprehensible)

Hey, I just gave a thank you out & it was not understood, gee thanks.

Guess I should have said not being a part of the swap(no burner to do it with) but receiving one.. I wanted to mention the positives of doing the swap, I received more.

I'm just so excited about the Stars/BlackHawk game I driving to on a doughnut for a tire that I'm being too brief. That after spendiong 250 bananas for tires I may see tomorrow:P

Posted by: Thomcatspike on March 5, 2003 02:48 PM

Word, witchstone. Plus, he was really cute. That helped. I wish I still had my Strip poster.

Posted by: cowboy_sally on March 5, 2003 02:50 PM

It's true. Adam & The Ants were great. Adam Ant solo, tragically bad.

Dirk Wears White Sox was a great album, as was Kings of the Wild Frontier.

Great great great

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 02:51 PM

Yes he was, although I liked him better with the warpaint.

Posted by: witchstone on March 5, 2003 02:52 PM

I've heard a bunch of his stuff and nope, I didn't like any of it. I suppose it's just lost on me.

Around age 9, I had a babysitter who was big into Adam Ant and Duran and stuff like that, so it musta grated on me after a while and turned me to heavy metal in desperation. Then about 4 years later a guy up the street in his twenties was giving away his old classic rock LP's so I inherited a pile and kept working backwords, destined never to be in style again... :)

Posted by: jonmc on March 5, 2003 02:56 PM

He was cute as a vampire too.

Posted by: cowboy_sally on March 5, 2003 02:56 PM

a) disturbed, the cd 'disturbed'
b) yes cover of 'america', a paul simon tune, the live version from 'keys to ascension'.

Posted by: quonsar on March 5, 2003 02:58 PM

I wasn't a huge fan of his music, but my girlfriend during my senior year was. There's nothing like having your girlfriend come back from a concert all hormonally charged up. I'll always have the memories, but the chafing mercifully went away.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 5, 2003 02:59 PM

I actually like his solo stuff, too.

Posted by: ufez on March 5, 2003 03:04 PM

Two bassists? What about Spinal Tap?

There was also this band (I swear I'm not trying to out-esoteric anyone, but) Big Pig, who were three drummers, a synth dude, a harmonica player, and a female singer who was all of four and a half feet tall. Oh, and they played in BBQ aprons and nothing else. They were really, really good. How would they fit into the whole who's hottest thing?

I guess I'm quite totally, totally in myself, if only to counteract all this Adamantia. I tried and failed to like the guy more times than I can count.

(And um, I can fulfill the one-of-my-own requirement if it comes to that.)

Posted by: Chico on March 5, 2003 03:05 PM

Uh, Jon, E*I*E*I*O is from Milwaukee and had a huge fan base here. Last I checked, we're both east of the Mississippi and north of Kentucky. Or did someone going changing my maps again?

Posted by: aine42 on March 5, 2003 03:05 PM

Spinal Tap was Derek Smalls on bass only, wasn't it?

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 03:09 PM

Oh but the Spinal Tap Mark II Jazz Odyssey thing was all bass.

Posted by: kaf on March 5, 2003 03:09 PM

All my life I've wanted to fly
Like the birds that you see way up in the sky
Making circles in the morning sun
Flying high in the sky till the day is done
I can't break away

They also had a song on the Young Einstein soundtrack. A movie few saw, and even fewer bought the soundtrack (guess who did both?).

i'm probably 'in', if you'll have me. and the pre-burning thing sounds like an excellent idea ("Twice burned...")

[a] the new Songs:Ohia, Damien Jurado and Dirty Three. Also playing the heck out of that Broken Social Scene record, and jesus christ the Postal Service album is catchy pop cool.

[b] Have any of you heard of this album called The Joshua Tree? It's actually good! Oh, and the Mark Hollis solo disc.

[sixteen horsepower] Last year's Folklore was pretty darn special! Though I can't quite imagine Bunnyfire listening to it...

Songs:Ohia ... Recommended starting point?

Hoo boy. Where to begin... Jason Molina & Co. are one of my favourite bands on the planet right now. Over the years, I've grown fond of the majority of their records, so it's hard to recommend one over the others.

Still, the album that got me hooked and to which I keep coming back is Axxess & Ace. This is Songs:Ohia at its most stripped down - mostly a man and his guitar. Very lofi, absolutely passionate, and unquestionably intense. One of my all-time faves. [full review]

Ghost Tropic is a much, uh, spookier record. More room to breathe, and lusher arrangements. It might be the best pick for you, Kaf, but I'm not positive. Standout: "The Body Burned Away".

The Lioness is the noisiest, most indie rock of the records. Some of the feedback stuff is hair-raising, especially coupled with Molina's voice. "Lioness" is the standout.

Last year's Didn't It Rain is a slow, quiet, lovely one, with some real bluegrass inspiration. Albini-produced. The standout is the title track. [full review]

Finally, Magnolia Record Co. (the new record), is a complete change of pace - a swing into midnight swamp rock. Kooky, but a grower. "Riding with the Ghost" is the highlight. [review]

They've done another five or six records, but these are the best places to start. :)

16 Horsepower?
Why would anyone think I wouldn't listen to that?
(Oh, and Petra was old back in the early 80's when I first heard of them.)

My main musical problem is that when you are feeding three hulking teenagers, there's not much dough left for CD shopping.

From the Folklore cd:

o sinnerman where will you run to
o sinnerman where will you run to
o sinnerman where will you run to
all on that day

run to the mountain
the mountain wont hide you
run to the sea
the sea will not have you
run to your grave
the grave will not hold you
all on that day

see sinnerman
mountains are falling
sinnerman
the sea it rages
sinnerman
the grave will not hold you
all on that day
run to the lord
lord please hide me
run to the lord

I'll sit this one out - I'm working too hard right now (thank God) to put in the effort it deserves.

I've got to put in a good word for TJ and Mars who both sent me superb double-CDs, very different and still very popular here. In fact, they're both prime record collection material.

In fact, I have to say that everybody I swapped with (Goneill took a while more but it was definitely worth it - and I got a book too), both times, gave much better than they got.

I think Lupo«s suggestion is superb. With most people it's a question of time/money/shit, not of spirit or delivering.

Perhaps (since we do have the Internet) people can all send their CDS at the same time. And, before that, harrass those who are late to hurry up and finish theirs.?

I'll definitely catch you all next time, though!

Posted by: Miguel on March 5, 2003 07:45 PM

This is just a thought, but what if we sent all our discs to Fes (or someone) who then would distribute them back out. That way there's no fibbin'. Or is that going too far?

Posted by: jpoulos on March 5, 2003 08:08 PM

Just means more postage. But I do like the pre-burn thing.

Hey, I love my swap goodies from last time, so sure, I'll do it again.

Posted by: tizzie on March 5, 2003 09:15 PM

Not that I'm far from it now, but it's kind of left the collection. Same with my Louder than Hell, No Remorse, and Heartwork.

Well that was theraputic...

Ahem. I emailed the FesTer (from work, I might add) to say that despite my temporary absence from active bantering duty around here, I'm in on the swappage thing. Apparently, our Administrator doesn't hope his email that often.

Anyway, count me in. There are always more show tunes and acappella bee-bop to share with your friends, ya' know.

And add another vote to the pre-burn idea, except here's a thought: if we don't know how many people are going to come through, how many cds will we know to burn?

Sorry everyone, I had to bail work early to buy presents for LittleFes, who turns a righteous three this weekend.

Here's what I was figuring: I'm collecting names -once everyone who plans to participate has weighed in, I'll list 'em and propose a deadline for CDs to be completed. At deadline, I will ask who's done, and that will become the master list of participants. I'll then get the last swap-group listings from Lupo, and correlate them against current participants so that repeat swapping is minimal (I'll try to get everyone in a group with people they didn't swap with last time) and notify everyone of number of dupes to make. I will also solicit playlists for people to requset copies outside their group and make their CD available to requestors.

Good?

Sounds jake to me, O Festiest one.

I've got this 6-CD song cycle worked out of various '70s sitcom stars paying homage to their favorite public figures you guys are just gonna love. I can't wait for y'all to hear David Cassidy do I Think I Love (My Local Bailiff). You'll love it.

Posted by: Chico on March 6, 2003 12:22 AM

Just to clarify, I'll send everyone their list of swappies when I send you the number of dupes to make.

Posted by: The Swapinistratator ("'tator" for short) on March 6, 2003 12:24 AM

I would do it if my idea for CD makin' weren't so inherently cruel: "A travelogue through the musical history of readymade."

It would be rambling, with no flow, some really BAD music interspersed with some really good music...it seems more like an exercise in torture than a good civic thing to do.

Maybe I'll just write up the playlist of my musical history, and we can experience it that way. That might be better.

Posted by: readymade on March 6, 2003 02:40 PM

But, readymade... some of us actually like really bad music. I have some real Grade-A High-Pile crap to offer, and I was hoping for some more back.

That is the point, right? Good Crap Hunting?

Posted by: Chico on March 6, 2003 05:05 PM

That is the point, right?

Please, don't put me in Chico's group!

Posted by: kaf on March 6, 2003 05:12 PM

Mwahahahahaha.

Actually, I've been working some track listings out all day today, and I'm feeling a lot better about my ability to contribute something acceptable than I did a few hours ago.

If that makes you feel any better.

That's 20 even. It's Friday the 7 of March in New York - so let's say, two weeks, everyone has to have their master burnt by midnight Friday March 21st?

Posted by: 'tator on March 7, 2003 12:45 AM

Then we'll see who has their burn done, and THEN I'll do the matchups. Good?

Posted by: 'tator on March 7, 2003 12:50 AM

And he saw that it was GOOD!

Posted by: kaf on March 7, 2003 11:31 AM

hey Tator, it may be a tad bit incomprehensible, but I'm pretty sure that TCSpike is not in.

I also notice that of my four recipients last time, only one (jonmc) is back. So either A) everyone hated my mix so much that it daunts their dreams and the thought of doing another swap sends little lightning bolts shocking their nether-regions (in a bad way) or B)My mix was so fan-fucking-tastic that they know there can be no better and the thought of my mix sends little lightning bolts shocking their nether-regions (in a good way). YMMV, of course.

Anyone else listening to the solemn beauty of Cat Power's new record, "You Are Free"? The whole thing is being streamed from her website.

It is overpowering.

Posted by: Miguel on March 11, 2003 04:31 AM

It is overpowering.

Tragically, Miguel, the past couple months of listens have made me feel that it's merely powering. It's a much easier record than the covers album or, my fave, Moonpix... That makes it great for casual afternoon melancholy, but as an artistic statement I think it's rather less meaningful. Less poingnant, less raw, less true. More approachable, certainly.

That said, "Good Woman" is one of the best things she's done... and "He War" is one heckuva fun song. But all of You Are Free's passion fades to grey when I follow it with Moonpix.

Enjoy it, though!

Posted by: Marquis on March 11, 2003 11:48 PM

Posted by: jonmc on March 20, 2003 09:35 PM

I'm going to try and get mine done tonight, though things are a bit hectic right now.

I guess it might be OK, though It probably won't be fuckin' sweet or anything.

Posted by: kaf on March 20, 2003 09:55 PM

Posted by: kaf on March 21, 2003 01:04 AM

WoooHOO! I woke up in the night and couldn't get back to sleep - and finished half my disc! Yay!

"Hot Monkey Love" - if the title's been used before, oh well, tough.

Posted by: tizzie on March 21, 2003 08:28 AM

Too bad aw isn't participating

in general, aw's participation in the 9622 shenanigans has been, of late, sorely lacking. This is a shame, as she is adored and beloved by all--even worshiped and obssessed over in a sorta creepy way by a few. Her absence causes us much soreness and chafing in the area around our monkey hearts.

Posted by: jpoulos on March 21, 2003 11:37 AM

It's the chafing that keeps us coming back.

Posted by: kafker on March 21, 2003 11:38 AM

You know, I just can't make a mixz that's not depressing. I listen to some mopey-assed music alright.

Posted by: kafker on March 21, 2003 02:24 PM

Aw has something in the works, if the damned DNS would only propagate correctly...

Posted by: adampsyche on March 21, 2003 02:32 PM

I don't think that chafing is in the heart area.
