Aye lads and lasses, it's St Paddy's Day. That means there's revelry to be reveled, pints to be hoisted, jigs to be danced and Shamrock Shakes to be drunk.
So top of the marnin' to ye and erin go braless!
Posted by jonmc at March 17, 2003 09:15 AMI'm Scotch-German. When's my holiday??
Anyone who say V-E Day is getting a noogie.
Posted by: Fes on March 17, 2003 09:57 AMLessee, Italian, Sicilian, Irish, English, French, German, and Norwegian. There's gotta be a holiday for that combination.
Posted by: adampsyche on March 17, 2003 10:09 AMI just had a Shamrock Shake yesterday. With McD's recent return to ice cream, I'm pleased to note that the shakes are much more drinkable than they were a couple of years ago. I would daresay it competed favorably with Denny's or Big Boy. And for $1.99 I got a 32 oz cup. If I'd coughed up an extra buck I could've made it a 44oz, but that seemed like a bridge too far.
Posted by: Britain on March 17, 2003 10:13 AMAny of you that don't have green on, consider yourselves pinched.
Posted by: b*nnyf*re on March 17, 2003 10:24 AMI am shocked and bemused that I missed this completely, and despite the fact that I have no classes to teach tomorrow, am totally sober.
What a poopyhead. What a Doody McPoopyhead, in fact.
Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on March 17, 2003 10:27 AMIreland is an old sow that devours her farrow. (James Joyce )
It's me and Lupo against the world, yet again.
Posted by: tizzie on March 17, 2003 10:36 AM**pelts everyone with corned beef**
Phooey.
Besides, I have a special reason for grabbin' me a pint or two tonight. Apparently, my branch of the infamous ranch is closing. Got out just in time I guess.
Posted by: jonmc on March 17, 2003 10:49 AMI've all but missed it already this year too. I've been entertaining friends from out of town all weekend, and they're non-drinkers, and so I've successfully avoided the green-beer-and-cabbage-milkshakeness of the season.
This fine eve, I, like all Irish and those who love them worldwide, shall be drinking herbal tea, listening to Charlie O'Mingus, and reading selections from Ulysses until our wee little voices give out. (mmmm. Pastoral, eh?)
Jon, have one for me tonight, mate.
Posted by: Chico on March 17, 2003 11:23 AMI have only one thing to say about this holiday:
Shite and onions.
Posted by: cowboy_sally on March 17, 2003 11:35 AMI hate the fucking Irish for having their fucking holiday on a fucking Monday when I have to be at fucking work instead of at home getting fucking drunk, the fucking fucks.
(How's that?)
Posted by: Crash on March 17, 2003 11:47 AMHowever, I will give the Irish credit for one thing: They're not the fucking French.
Posted by: Crash on March 17, 2003 11:48 AMThey had green bagels at the store today. I guess I should have had one, in lieu of partaking of green beer.
I gotta have corned beef and cabbage, if I'm gonna manage....
Posted by: adampsyche on March 17, 2003 11:56 AMMaybe just me, but green bagels make me think of mold, which makes me think I would not want to eat them.
Posted by: brittney on March 17, 2003 12:17 PMCome to think of it, they were kinda fuzzy as well.
Posted by: adampsyche on March 17, 2003 12:32 PMif it's green and it ain't a leaf or a bean, I don't eat it.
That's just good sense.
Posted by: Fes on March 17, 2003 12:40 PMWould you like them in a house?
Would you like them with a mouse?
I'll be celebrating, Jon - thanks to an Irish grandmother and a fondness verging on passion for the whiskey. So I'll be opening my last bottle of the Midleton and have already started on the dark stuff.
's lawnchair! :)
Posted by: Miguel on March 17, 2003 12:49 PMHowever, I will give the Irish credit for one thing: They're not the fucking French.
Crash, was this you?
Posted by: tizzie on March 17, 2003 12:52 PMTo All of you not celebratin' this fine holiday.
May snakes bite your arse.
Posted by: tj on March 17, 2003 01:02 PMFucking McDonalds on Varick Street don't make the Shamrock Shakes. Communists.
So here I sit with the traditional St Paddy's Day frappucino and pizza.
No matter, soon I will pouring guiness down my neck.
Posted by: jonmc on March 17, 2003 01:10 PMtizzie, that is the most pathetic thing I have read in the last, oh, 10 minutes! The country seems chock-full-o-shit these days.
Collective madness seems to be sweeping far faster than that new debbil-worshipping virus from China.
Posted by: readymade on March 17, 2003 01:23 PMI would like to say that I have ALWAYS been anti French, but get in the spirit of the holoday, and blame the English
Posted by: tj on March 17, 2003 01:27 PMIt's me mum's birthday today. 's a good thing she's not gettin' a war, like originally planned.
Posted by: eyeball skids on March 17, 2003 01:31 PMOn this day St. Patrick,
Surrounded by friends and more
Take that guy wearing a "Kiss Me, I'm Irish" pin
And throw him the hell out the door.
Why must people be so specific about what type of people they hate? Be democratic and hate all of them equally!
Posted by: readymade on March 17, 2003 01:57 PMThanks to a parade and block party I celebrated St. Paddy's on Saturday. I got drunk and sunburned, like a redneck family reunion at Lake Tenkiller. Now my face is peeling off and it's monday. At least my boss is gone this week.
Posted by: ufez on March 17, 2003 02:00 PM(I will say though, Saturday night I hung out wit dem Craddock boys in #mefi. They're fun to party with.)
Posted by: ufez on March 17, 2003 02:01 PMWow, tizzie, I grew up in that "quintessentially American subdivision." How lame.
Not the best thing to see when the lunch buzz is wearing off...
Posted by: Cyrano on March 17, 2003 02:16 PMCan I get a rollcall for the Saturday meetup? I requested offa werk, I did. Is witchy back in town yet?
Posted by: adampsyche on March 17, 2003 02:18 PMI am in fact Scottish, which means I'll be spending this St. Patty's punching the mailman in the throat.
Maybe these things aren't connected.
What's important is, my site is far more Irish that yours. And I like the French.
I'll be there.
BTW, is the ranch closing official, it's still listed on the site dude?
Posted by: jonmc on March 17, 2003 02:38 PMI bet it was closed because some unscrupulous staff kept making off with borrowing the merchandise.
Posted by: Ryan on March 17, 2003 02:47 PMSure an' be dong_resin, that's an Irish site. A tasteful celebration in plaid, if such a thing is possible.
Cyrano and Readymade, that article was another artificially-colored-with-red-dye #666 cherry-on-the-top of my american malaise sundae. Along with that beautiful girl being plowed by a steamshovel in Israel and our prez's warmongering, it's just one more global embarrassment. *sigh*
I hate this stuff. It's so wrong and I feel so powerless against it.
Posted by: tizzie on March 17, 2003 03:15 PMWell, today has been really cheerful. I'm gonna just finish my last hour and a half of work, find a bar, drink myself stupid and, if I'm lucky, get hit by a bus.
Posted by: jonmc on March 17, 2003 03:20 PM*dons party hat to cheer jonmc and gets appropriately pissed*I
*gets too pissed and flings brassiere on lamppost*
*dances naked in green rain puddles*
Posted by: readymade on March 17, 2003 03:40 PMHey, if there's naked lamppost dancing there ought to be photo evidence.
Posted by: Crash on March 17, 2003 04:23 PMwhat a great website this is. but wouldn't it be better if there were two versions and one or the other was served up randomly each time you visited? that would be so confusing.
Posted by: dontknow on March 17, 2003 04:44 PMThink of the drunken children and monkeys, don't know. Won't somebody please think of the drunken children and monkeys?
Posted by: ufez on March 17, 2003 04:59 PMTop of the day to ye all.
Leave it to jon, for this post. Thanks for reminding me the fun in St. Patties day, green shakes, mmm, now to hunt one down tonight.
Suggest something to spike it with, so to bring the red out in my nose?
Posted by: Thomcatspike on March 17, 2003 05:47 PMThose who get the Sundance cable channel in the US can at least watch The Shane MacGowan Story, which sounds inspirational. Sadly, I'm not so blessed, so I'll just stick to the usual punching people wearing green.

Erin go post!
Posted by: liam on March 17, 2003 06:02 PMJon! why shrug? Why not join in drunk naked green puddle dancing? I hear all the Irish are doing it! And, apparently Euro-mutts without a drop of Irish in them!
(and yes, it is so rain, Fes! Because otherwise, yeecchh!)
Posted by: readymade on March 17, 2003 06:13 PMI been drinkin' alll night. The whole world can kiss my ruddy red ass.
That is all.

True story: I was in DC for 4th of July, went down to the Washington Monument for the fireworks, it was great but hot-hot. Anyway, tings wrap up, everyone stampedes back to the Metro stations to get on the train. I finally get on the platform, it's wall to wall people, I mean, really REALLY crammed. I happen to look down... and the floor is soaking wet, like a quarter inch deep. My first thought is, don't slip, you'll never get back up. My second thought is, I don't remember it raining...? My third thought is, wait a sec, that's not rain... it's a quarter inch depth of HUMAN SWEAT!!
I was never so glad to have opted for tennis shoes instead of sandals in my life.
Posted by: Fes on March 18, 2003 12:07 AMSigh...March 17 marked the sixth anniversary of the day my glasses got broken in an impromptu mosh pit at a Shane MacGowan show. *smiles at the fond memory*
And apropos of nothing...
Posted by: Vidiot on March 18, 2003 06:21 AMI lost a creeper for a few moments at the Fall from Grace tour.
~And I lost my innocence at a Four Tops reunion.~
