March 25, 2003 : There is Now Only One Place Left on Earth Without Advertising

People have said these things about that :

I know he's got to pay the bills, but those ads are ugly as tits on a bullfrog.

Posted by: ColdChef on March 25, 2003 11:02 PM

I'd kvetch along, I hate advertising in general, and particularly on the mothersite, but I never managed to either donate or buy a text ad, so I think I'll just bite my tongue. It least it's not animated.

Posted by: dong resin on March 25, 2003 11:09 PM

I think it's interesting how he wrote an epistle about the server downtime and didn't mention the ads.

I'm with Dreama on this one -- I'd gladly pay $10-20 per year in order to have commenting privileges on an ad-free MeFi.

Posted by: Vidiot on March 25, 2003 11:24 PM

I never contributed a cent to MeFi or, more seriously, to 9622. As it is, I owe. In a big way. So I'd love it if a way was found to pay for it - or make some money for those who coughed up cash to make 96 happen.

Posted by: Miguel on March 25, 2003 11:27 PM

I did contribute (twice) to MeFi (so, my conscience is clean) and have asked how to do so around here; however, apparently them what run the place only trade in balls of dung, of which I am fresh out.

Posted by: yhbc on March 25, 2003 11:32 PM

you can pay me in booze at any time. But since I'm just the graphics monkey, I'll gladly work gratis.

Posted by: tj on March 25, 2003 11:34 PM

That reminds me, whatever happened with the brick?

Posted by: ana on March 25, 2003 11:53 PM

I skipped Mefi, but I'd pony up here. Sure there's no way we can set up a trust fund or something, maybe a line of credit at the local Plaza Liquors or something?

Posted by: Fes on March 25, 2003 11:56 PM

It's fugly, sure, but maybe he needs the ducats. I paid once for server upgrade, but how much does MeFi cost to keep up and running? Maybe it's a whole lotta dough. I have no idea...

Or maybe it's a subtle ploy to annoy people so that he can unload the site without feeling any guilt. If that's it, it's a very sly maneuver. Ol' tricky Matt!

Posted by: readymade on March 26, 2003 12:37 AM

I gave (quite a lot) in the hope of staving off advertising. Fuck it.

Posted by: liam on March 26, 2003 12:39 AM

And fuck the 9622 server too.

Posted by: liam on March 26, 2003 12:47 AM

After all I do for you, and this is the thanks I get?

Fuck you too, buddy.

Posted by: 9622 Server on March 26, 2003 12:59 AM

My butt is also completely free of advertising. Just sayin'.

*waggles it a bit*

Weddings, parties, anything!

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on March 26, 2003 03:46 AM

I was thinking about contributing to MeFi not so long ago, but then my debit card was rejected on an $11 purchase. So I don't mind the ads too much. In fact, my eyes already seem to be filtering them out.

(Maybe if we retroactively charged all users $0.50 per comment...)

Posted by: kaibutsu on March 26, 2003 06:40 AM

I contributed when he did the server upgrade. I figured it was worth it.

By the way, I didn't want to start a new thread for this, but here's some monkeys sitting in a bar, telling jokes. 1.5mb wmv file.

Posted by: adampsyche on March 26, 2003 08:45 AM

Kaibutsu: Now, see, THAT'S what I'm talkin' about. Charge per comment. Or, better, charge for posts. Charge double for double-posts. (Triple if your handle is... nah, never mind.) That way, all the people who post "TEH L8EST W4R N00Z (NYTimes link, free registration required)" just to see their handle at the top of the front page for a few minutes are paying for the privilege.

Hota, do you want your donation in person or is there an street address of a bar tab I should just apply it to?

Posted by: Britain on March 26, 2003 08:59 AM

My butt is also completely free of advertising. Just sayin'.

Lucky You stav.

Due to a drunken youthful liason with a skilled stealth tattooist, I have to serve as a posterior billboard.

Those playtex people are vicious. But I've helped their market share.

Posted by: jonmc on March 26, 2003 09:01 AM

The filter is accessible from home, but now I'm getting "page cannot be displayed" errors at werk. *sigh*

Posted by: adampsyche on March 26, 2003 10:36 AM

I checked it last night, same foofaraw different day. Some of the shrillness is subsiding, but the trolls are still out from under their bridges. Feed them at your own risk, else they come every night to your door to sup.

Posted by: Fes on March 26, 2003 10:48 AM

It's not just you, Adam.

*kaibutsu's name promptly added to ColdChef's the Killer's deathlist.

Posted by: Miguel on March 26, 2003 11:15 AM

I'd have paid a monthly fee for Mefi, back before it sucked.

Posted by: jpoulos on March 26, 2003 11:18 AM

I don't go every day like I used to, but it's still one of my favorite websites. I have fooled friends and enemies alike into proclaiming me a genius because of Things I Learned on Metafilter.

Posted by: witchstone on March 26, 2003 11:46 AM

Things I Learned on Metafilter

Now there's a tagline.

Posted by: adampsyche on March 26, 2003 12:00 PM

Are there ads on MeFi now?

post?

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 12:08 PM

Ugly, ugly, ugly, necessary ads.

Posted by: ColdChef on March 26, 2003 12:09 PM

Nice, Chef.

You can just call me "Fake Squeak" from now on.

Tell me of your homeworld, Fake Squeak.

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 12:09 PM

Oddly, enough, I've finally started to reach the "MeFi makes me wanna destroy civilization" phase, so maybe this couldn't have come at a better time.

Posted by: jonmc on March 26, 2003 12:10 PM

You can refer to me as "SPACED AH MY"

Posted by: adampsyche on March 26, 2003 12:19 PM

I never quite got the railing against ads on MeFi, when The Owie so obviously put a large amount of time and effort into the site. Text ads are very unobtrusive and in no way force you to pay attention to them. It's very easy to take the moral high ground against the evils of ads when you're not paying for the site.

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 12:22 PM

I guess CC thinks I'm YMCA SHAPED.

Posted by: adampsyche on March 26, 2003 12:25 PM

heh.

Posted by: ColdChef on March 26, 2003 12:28 PM

I'd like to interrupt this bitch session for some breaking news about one of your favourite bitches (i.e. me):

You know that feeling when you have a job that you hate that has nothing to do with the art that's burning deep (and I mean deep, baby) down in your soul and then you find out that you're going to have a chance to pursue that art and get an MFA out of it at a program that only accepts 3 women per year and this means that the end is in sight for the job that you have come to hate (hatred, like the kernel of popcorn that gets stuck between your teeth and your gum and you can't get it out) and every other minute or so the reality washes over you anew and you just want to run up and down the hallways of cubicles doing a little happy dance?

Well, that's how I feel. I'm so tempted to use emoticons right now, that's how far gone I am. It could get ugly real soon.

Back to the biyzzatching!

Posted by: witchstone on March 26, 2003 01:08 PM

Woo hoo, witchy!

Posted by: adampsyche on March 26, 2003 01:28 PM

I have no idea what you're talking about, but it seems positive, so large congratulations.

Sadly, my own anagrams include "ENDORSING" but happily, they also include "SEND GROIN" and "DINER SONG".

Posted by: dong resin on March 26, 2003 01:31 PM

Kick out the kernels, biyzzatch! Congratulations.

Posted by: liam on March 26, 2003 01:33 PM

My handle is too short to produce anagrams. I only have plain flavored chips in my lunch. And it's 3 1/2 hours before I can have a beer.

Bar the windows.

Posted by: jonmc on March 26, 2003 01:34 PM

Congrats, Witchstone! A rare boon for a rare gem. Tell 'em what you think! Then strut out like Catwoman.

But before you do that, you may want to load up your backpack with some office supplies. Hey, just because your brain is flooded with the heady endorphins of taking this job and shovin' it doesn't mean you should neglect practical matters.

Posted by: Fes on March 26, 2003 01:35 PM

unclefes = SCENE FLU

But what's it mean??

Posted by: Fes on March 26, 2003 01:40 PM

Witchy! Steal me some of those little stapler remover deals! With the teeth! I used to love playing "piranha"!

Posted by: dong resin on March 26, 2003 01:42 PM

Huzzah! Witchy, when your art gets you fame and fortune, don't forget the little monkeys!

We love you so much, we all want to hitch along for the ride on what I perceive to be rather delightful (and sexy) coattails!

Posted by: readymade on March 26, 2003 01:44 PM

Congrats, witchy!

Posted by: b*nnyf*re on March 26, 2003 01:50 PM

Well, let's not get carried away with the fame and fortune thing, it's just grad school.

But it's in San Diego! No snow for 2 years!

Posted by: witchstone on March 26, 2003 01:52 PM

Hey congrats, Witchstone!

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 01:53 PM

Congrats, witchy! Where is this program at? And what exactly will you be studying?

Would someone please congratulate my son? He doesn't have to enlist in the Air Force directly after high school graduation.(*mom wipes brow and throws poo*

If you need someone to sharpen pencils, fetch espresso and shoot trouble for you, I'm available. Fair warning: I'm somewhat expensive, but worth every penny. And I'll supply my own gun.

"... and it's bothering me. Would you...?"

"Of course, Ms. Stone. Consider the problem solved. Permanently." *buttons suit jacket, departs purposefully*

Congrats, jun*orf*re!

Although apparently, if I ever become a (consistently) working actor I'm no longer allowed to have political opinions.

Posted by: witchstone on March 26, 2003 02:04 PM

Of course you may have opinions, Ms. Stone. As your prospective troubleshooter, however, I would advise you to refrain from speaking your more ludicrous ones publicly... best to remain silent and be thought a nutcase, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt, no? Now, you prefer the Turkish cinnamon in your espresso, correct? And, please, allow me...

*flicks lighter*

But it's in San Diego! No snow for 2 years!

San Diego...shorts/sweatshirt weather year round...Witchy is going to San Diego, look out fast life her comes slow slow life & relaxing fun. Sure to see her hanging in La Jolla then weekend jaunts to LA, two hours away. Congrats for sure on your future endeavor ...

bunny that is outstanding about your son...not sure why said nothing then...wish I had been offered a similar program, Roger Staubach did something similar previous to the Navel Academy.

Holy crap! You're going to be a left-coaster? One more monkey that we can never plan meet-ups with! You'll be pretty close to Kaf, though.

*sniff*

Posted by: readymade on March 26, 2003 03:05 PM

Lock up your husbands, Mrs. -esque and Mrs. ballkid. Congrats witchy. Someday you'll have to drop by Dallas and hook up with the monksters here. After a SoCal meetup and us, you'd have met a good half of us at least, I'm betting.

Posted by: ufez on March 26, 2003 03:09 PM

Lock up your husbands, Mrs. -esque and Mrs. ballkid.

Hmmm. Perhaps it would be more appropriate for Mr. Esque and Mr. Ballkid to lock up their wives. I'm sure the reason that we don't see their female counterparts around 9622 is because they secretly fear these women are far more witty and debonaire than they are.

But thank you for the warm thoughts, everyone. You have now been added to my Oscar "Thank You" list.

Posted by: witchstone on March 26, 2003 03:54 PM

Wow. I go off and work for a few hours and all kinds of positive hell breaks loose.

How long you got left, witch, before that heartburn can be cooled off? We talking summer, fall, what? Because a going away party is definitely in order. Maybe a series of them.

And b****f***, that's really great news. That kid of yours can take all the time he needs to get into the Academy at this point. And I hear Alabama is lovely in the ... um, in the...

Well, it's close to New Orleans, anyway.

Posted by: Chico on March 26, 2003 04:14 PM

I'll probably be in the city for 3 more months.

Posted by: witchstone on March 26, 2003 04:23 PM

At least it's been established that mrs. psyche is far more witty and debonaire than I am. Don't bother me much, no.

Posted by: adampsyche on March 26, 2003 04:23 PM

Hey, I just woke up. I can actually breathe out of my right nostril. If that doesn't make me as excited as Witchy, it should.

Good going, hurrah! I think I may toast with some Nyquil in your honor.

And, there are no anagrams for tizzie.

Posted by: tizzie on March 26, 2003 04:30 PM

It's true. Mrs. Esque is far more more alluring and intelligent than me. But I drink beer way better.

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 04:30 PM

Make sure you imbibe the green NyQuil, first pouring it over a sugar cube. It's the poor, phlegmy woman's absinthe!

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 04:32 PM

Are you moving, witchstone?

Posted by: ana on March 26, 2003 04:45 PM

I prefer the Nyquil Spritzer. Yummy and fever-reducing!

Posted by: Fes on March 26, 2003 04:45 PM

Dood. That is such a, you know, doublepost Anathema.

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 04:50 PM

Does NyQuil make you guys sleepy? I hear all these jokes about how you'll pass out immediately... never really affected me that way. Of course it could be the effect of all the opium from my heady days in Shanghai.

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 04:52 PM

9622.net: I drink beer way better.

Posted by: ufez on March 26, 2003 04:54 PM

You can have mine...way too many, even for me to find a good one.

How about Tiz ez I; ez I Tiz; ez it iz
speaking of no bills, my grandfather brought me back from England a plaque like that...now heartbroken fondly remember the last time I saw my lil bro was for his funeral last may...*sigh*
Now remember finding that plaque in my brother's room when I packed up all his belongings when he moved back to Cali as a teen...little brothers what are they good for?

Posted by: Thomcatspike on March 26, 2003 05:01 PM

post no bills

Posted by: Thomcatspike on March 26, 2003 05:04 PM

huh. Best I got is "UK Bit US," though, like fez, (or should I say "Ezf?") I don't really know what that means.

Ah, yes, art grad school... Some of my best friend back East were of such a type. Cammilla, who was crazy, but it was okay because she was from South Africa... Matt Rogers, who was crazy, but it was all right because he was the human personification of wisdom, sort of like that Delphic Oracle... Ed, who was mad, but it was okay because he enrolled in a Master's program at 65, and his missing tooth was a beacon of hope to us all... And of course, Corey, who was, like the others, mad, but also from L.A., so it wasn't ok. But she made up for it with l33t skilz and a willingness to do things like skydive anytime, anywhere.

(fuck i miss boston.) *pours one for himself, one for, ah, Eastern homies.*

Good luck, witchy. In the words of my teacher, Represent.

Posted by: kaibutsu on March 26, 2003 05:18 PM

speaking of post no bills, maybe i'll go get witchy's name tattooed on my ass tonight.

Posted by: kaibutsu on March 26, 2003 05:20 PM

In case there is any confusion, I meant "art" as in acting, which I know some people don't consider "art." I don't really do anything with oils, marble or even elephant dung. You may rescind your "congratulations" at any time.

Posted by: witchstone on March 26, 2003 05:25 PM

I gotta read this shit. Congratulations witchy! I here they have a good zoo in SD.

Posted by: ana on March 26, 2003 05:26 PM

Darn, acting, I knew that, but thought art, nudes, Black Beach...

Posted by: Thomcatspike on March 26, 2003 05:34 PM

Yes, apparently I went there when I was 6 or 7. I have photographic evidence of me reaching out to pet a deer. There's a reason I only have 4 fingers on my left hand, you know.

Posted by: witchstone on March 26, 2003 05:35 PM

whoops left of a part of my post, black beach is a nudist beach outside SD.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on March 26, 2003 05:38 PM

Witchstone, that is super-badass.

Posted by: The Mens of New Yawk on March 26, 2003 06:04 PM

San Francisco is probably my favorite of all the cities I've lived in, with Santa Cruz a close second (although it was kind of a pain having those vampire Corys flapping around all the time).

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 06:06 PM

Are they somehow related to Corey Feldman or Corey Haim?

Posted by: witchstone on March 26, 2003 06:13 PM

Yeah...The Lost Boys was filmed there. We used to go down to the railroad trestle they were hanging from in the film and drink beers.

Life's rich pageant.

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 06:24 PM

And if you're referring to my laughable misspelling of the good Coreys' sobriquets, I can assure you that only their closest confidantes allow the deletion of the "e".

Posted by: kaf on March 26, 2003 06:25 PM

Corey Feldman or Corey Haim?

I share a b-day with one of those guys...embarrassing as only famous person born that day, lucky me. Seen both C's at Knott's flying while doing some film promo....really, with some additives to their blood.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on March 26, 2003 06:53 PM

You are so right, Mr. K. The red Nyquil tastes like ass.

Chasing it with scotch helps.

Posted by: tizzie on March 26, 2003 06:53 PM

chasing? hell, i just mix the stuff. in fact, that's not a bad idea... later, folks!

Posted by: kaibutsu on March 26, 2003 07:08 PM

Congratulations, Witchstone! I know just how you feel. I'm not an arty type but it felt good to go back to school.

I'm elated today because I'm moving. Not very far or anything (a little closer to Detroit), but the townhouse is much nicer than the apartment and about $20 cheaper per month with incentives. Beer money!

A friend of mine recently found a fine acronym for my full name: "Dr. Wino Manitoba." So when I start my Dictators cover band, I have a stage name.

I've been reading MeFi through an RSS reader for a couple of weeks now - no ads. No comments, either, but no ads!

Posted by: Britain on March 26, 2003 07:57 PM

I don't think you're missing much either way these days, Britian.

I don't really participate in the blue lady much these days, so I missed Cold Chef's anagramming my name over there, which makes my above comment in which I insincerly well-wish towards Witchstone only as a pit stop over on my way to anagramming myself seem a bit narcissistic, so I want to go for a do over, and wish Witchstone much congrats and good luck without mentioning myself. Pretty as I may be.

Also, I have never once taken a cold or headache remedy. Aren't I fascinating and healthy?

Posted by: dong resin on March 26, 2003 08:19 PM

And here's me proving that I can, in fact, spell "insincerely".
Or at least look it up.

Posted by: dong resin on March 26, 2003 08:20 PM

Congratulations, Witchstone! I would wax poetic about that Joseph Campbell "Follow Your Bliss" stuff, but the art deep down in my soul is paintings of sad clowns or matadors on velvet.

Also, anagramically speaking: Scram Rash

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 26, 2003 08:49 PM

Mmm, Nyquil and scotch.

Also, I have never once taken a cold or headache remedy. Aren't I fascinating and healthy?

Back in my piratin' days - yaar! - Dristan No-Doze and shots of rye used to be one of my favourite combinations when nothing more, uh, potent, was to be had. Worth a try!

Posted by: jonmc on March 27, 2003 08:14 AM

Yeah, there's probably only, like, 3 students at any given time at that school.

Kaf, I am shocked and delighted (and only slightly appalled) that when I teasingly suggested you were talking about The Coreys (if you recall, only Feldman allows the e dropping, Haim is much more uptight about the niceties), you actually were. I'd forgotten about them being in Lost Boys because back in the day I was always mooning over Keifer Sutherland.

No, but I didn't really know that many people. I'd just hang out Julio mostly, and some of my banana slug friends. It was kind of like Dune, excpt not in the desert and the worms were smaller and yellow.

The producers wish to state that they did in no way mean to imply that kafkaesque is a gay mormon actor. No sirree bob.

Posted by: witchstone on March 27, 2003 11:35 AM

It is true that while I am not a gay mormon actor per se, it has been foreordained in a prophecy gleaned from some alpaca entrails that one shall play me in a teevee serialization of my life.

Of course, alpaca entrails are notoriously untrustworthy, but there you go.
