March 31, 2003 : Gooooooooooooaaaaaal!

We just can't wait til Saturday.

The MLS season is upon us. This again reminds me of a few things:

1. It's a small miracle the league's survived.
2. I am so glad it has.
3. it's improved US soccer no end, as evidenced in the last Cup, where we put "powers" like Portugal to shame (sorry, Miguel)
4. San Jose is far superior to any team you may personally support.
5. Womens be lovin' Landon Donovan.
6. We need more TV coverage!

Posted by kafkaesque at March 31, 2003 04:29 PM

People have said these things about that :

1. On the sixth day, Zod created Taylor Twellman.

2. Testify!

3. Forget Portugal, we practically put Germany to shame. And they won the damn thing.

4. The finest west of New England, at least!

5. And women be lovin' men who be lovin' Landon Donovan. At least that's what I'm banking on.

6. Seriously. Seriously.

Is it just me, or does it look like L-Do has shaved his legs in that pic?

Now to respond to dirty thread next door so those precious, patient, boring, baseball folks can have theirs back:

I do think that Harkes overreacted to his cut from the Nat'l team, which likely affected all of his play thereafter, unfortunately. He became quite bitter. But instead of laying the blame on the guy that deserves it, I'll slag on Arena instead.

I also saw earlier today that Carlo Valderrama got cut from the Rapids a few weeks ago. Fuckers. No rooting for them either this year. I really like the state of Colorado, but they always give me a good reason to hate their teams (I'm looking at you, Avalanche). So El Pibe is now teamless, and likely retiring.

Re: more TV coverage: totally agree. All of the Burn's away games will be broadcast locally (which is nice), but only two of the home games will be, and those are both on ESPN2. 2? Out of what, 14? Sheesh.

Oh, and Go Burn!

Posted by: ufez on March 31, 2003 04:47 PM

Yeah, um, really go burn!

Posted by: ufez on March 31, 2003 04:47 PM

Will he retire the 'do? Time will tell.

Posted by: jpoulos on March 31, 2003 04:48 PM

Forget Portugal, we practically put Germany to shame. And they won the damn thing.

Which World Cup were you watching, lupo? In the one I saw, Migs got his laughs in by at least having Portuguese exiles win. I know, I know, the early game times sucked balls.

Posted by: ufez on March 31, 2003 04:49 PM

Valderrama had that cool Harlem Globetrotters-hiding-the-team-bus-in-his-hair afro going on, but he's probably done. I'm hoping Stoichkov gets some more play time this year. He's great to watch, even though I get hoarse yelling "Dive! He's diving!" for 90 minutes (or the 35 he plays anyway).

Posted by: kafka the drum slowly on March 31, 2003 04:52 PM

I really enjoyed the few World Cup games I watched last year. I'm kinda interested in getting into the whole soccer thing but, to be honest, I don't really know where to start. Like telling someone who's never watched baseball, "you're supposed to hate the Yankees" kind of start.

Any pointers?

Posted by: Cyrano on March 31, 2003 04:52 PM

hmm, well Cyrano, I would recommend checking out some English Premiership games or European games to begin with. The MLS, while our league, is not the greatest soccer to start with.

check out soccertv for all US telecasts.

Posted by: kafka the drum slowly on March 31, 2003 04:57 PM

Cool beans. Thanks.

Posted by: Cyrano on March 31, 2003 04:58 PM

First, off, you're supposed to hate the Yankees, no matter which sport you're watching.

Um...where to begin. Where are you from?

Posted by: jpoulos on March 31, 2003 04:58 PM

...and when you do start watching the EPL, remember, Manchester United are the fucking Yankees of Europe (wink, wink).

Posted by: ufez on March 31, 2003 05:02 PM

That's right!

Sad and lowly Palace supporter here. But I support Arsenal just to go against Man U (and cause I love the French!)

Posted by: kafka the drum slowly on March 31, 2003 05:03 PM

So we Revs fan get a HUGE treat this year:

Barcelona vs. Juventus

Posted by: jpoulos on March 31, 2003 05:07 PM

Also the Man U v. Real Madrid Champions League matchup is coming up. I fear it's only on pay-per-view however.

Posted by: kafka the drum slowly on March 31, 2003 05:09 PM

It's hard to get Premiership games on our cable system, but if I suppose I'm a Newcastle fan.

Because of the ale.

I used to follow Chelsea.

Posted by: jpoulos on March 31, 2003 05:11 PM

A couple of years ago I would have glibly said "I prefer sports where you use your hands, like Thumb Wrestling or Slap the Shit Out of Carrot Top." But then I caught a few English Premier games on Fox Sports and I liked it. I think I remember rooting for Newcastle because of brown ale and the Hotspurs because I think they're named after a Shakespeare character. Can someone tell me what the nickname of Newcastle is, and where the Hotspurs play just so I'm not a total dumbass when the subject comes up again? Than Kew.

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 31, 2003 05:12 PM

If I typed faster, I would have had the ale comment first. Curse my twisted, gnarled fingers!

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 31, 2003 05:15 PM

United.

Tottenham.

Posted by: jpoulos on March 31, 2003 05:15 PM

Thanks, Lupo!

Go Tottenham!

(Although the Tottenham Hottentots would be the best sports team name ever.)

Posted by: Mars Crash on March 31, 2003 05:18 PM

Marty: Newcastle United (alternatives: Magpies, Toon Army (but I think Toon Army may just be their fans))

You should definitely go to those games lupo. One of the two soccer games I've seen outside of the States was in Newcastle when they played Juventus in a friendly shortly after World Cup '98. It was a great thrill. (As an aside, I spent that night under the bridge that you can see in the middle of Newcastle Brown Ale's blue star in their logo. The night before, when I had money, I slept in a hostel right across the street from the brewery. Unfortunately, they didn't do tours on the weekends (wtf?)).

I like Newcastle quite a bit, but I'm slowly starting to pull for Blackburn too, since they have Brad Freidle (who I love). For teams in the south, I'll take Chelsea as well. Cos Chelsea girls say Oi Oi Oi! Chelsea girls like skinhead boys!

Posted by: ufez on March 31, 2003 05:21 PM

And across the Channel:
Serie A
JUVENTUS

Bianconeri all the way, baby. And I am happy to report that gli Azzurri are finally (!) pulling their shit back together after the Cup.

And let's not forget the classiest, bestest player on the pitch.

Posted by: romakimmy on March 31, 2003 05:24 PM

Yes, but can he bend it like Beckham?

Posted by: witchstone on March 31, 2003 05:25 PM

Dunno Witchy, but I find that I have a weird fetish for his bald spot.

Posted by: romakimmy on March 31, 2003 05:26 PM

I went to Palace v. Wolves last time I was in England. Also got to see Aston Villa when they came to San Jose to play the Quakes (then Clash). After the game, we went and chatted with a few of them at the pub.

Posted by: kafka the drum slowly on March 31, 2003 05:26 PM

Hey Roma, is Torino still in position to be relegated out of Serie A?

*sniffs*

Posted by: ufez on March 31, 2003 05:28 PM

Yup. Sorry, Ufez. Napoli is also looking at being regelated to Serie C.

Posted by: romakimmy on March 31, 2003 05:31 PM

*cries*

Oh well, time to go get my car fixed.

Posted by: ufez on March 31, 2003 05:36 PM

Well, only this week Portugal beat the world champions, Brazil, 2-1; while the under-21 youngsters horsewhipped the English 4-2. Meanwhile, in rugby, it became the 2003 European 6-nation champion.

So let's have a little more respect, if you want to be welcomed here in 2004, as you so well deserve. ;)

Otherwise, I'm rooting for the U.S.A. all the way!

Posted by: Miguel on March 31, 2003 06:45 PM

Bear in mind we are a tiny country with only 10 million inhabitants and you can begin to smell the glory.

The fact that we pilfered Scolari, Brazil's winning coach, and that we are making great Brazilian players like Deco instant Portuguese citizens has nothing to do with it, you hear?!

And if it does, it is further proof of our cunning ways. A little Portuguese can go a long way - too far, I hear, under your foul minty breaths, you bastards say. :)

Posted by: Miguel on March 31, 2003 06:49 PM

I'm an Aresenal fan, but it's because everything I know about English soccer I learned from Nick Hornby's book, "Fever Pitch."

Last summer I found myself travelling across Europe without many plans, and ended up watching about a third of the World Cup games at overstuffed pubs and in 3am hotel rooms... Shit is way too addictive. I found myself one day standing outside a television store in Budapest in a crowd of about twenty people, rooting, I think, for Italy as they came back to tie in literally the last minute. Soccer rocks.

Posted by: kaibutsu on March 31, 2003 06:51 PM

Oh and here's a cure for bendy Beckham. (NSFW).

Posted by: Miguel on March 31, 2003 06:51 PM

Oh my dear sweet jeebus, miguel.

Posted by: ufez on March 31, 2003 07:10 PM

For the love of God, are you people ranting about soccer again? TAKE YOUR MEDS, MONKEY BROTHERS!

Posted by: Crash on March 31, 2003 07:20 PM

Why is it so difficult to find bars in NYC that sell Newkie Brown by the sixer?

I'm just askin'.

Posted by: jonmc on March 31, 2003 08:59 PM

Ufez, I join you in my everlasting hatred of the Avs.

Here's to one week left in the NHL season! *sniff*

Playoff time!

Here, for no reason at all, is a chimpanzee enjoying a quiet pot of yogurt.

Posted by: Miguel on April 1, 2003 01:03 AM

adam, if the Stars don't take the West (which, god-willing they will) then I'm cool with either the Wings or the Canucks. I love Chris Chelios, but I also love Trevor Linden (and the Wings have Hull pulling against them, in my mind). But whichever, Go Stars!

Tugnut for Queen!

Posted by: ufez on April 1, 2003 01:43 AM

He has one of my favorite hockey names, that Ron Tugnutt.

Portugal: "2003 European 6 Nations Champions"?

Bwahahahahahahhahahaha

So uhhh, what mighty rugby playing collossi did they face? Hmmm Russia, Romania, Czech Rep., Spain and... Georgia.

Dont mean to be a n0bber but thats a hilarious achievement. Still could probably give the Welsh a run for their money ;)

And the "Hotspur" from Tottenham Hotspurs comes from some old dude called Harry Hotspur who started some trouble hundreds of years ago, yeah he was in "Henry IV". They are generally referred to as "Spurs" [p.s. they sux0r].

If you wanna watch good football, support Arsenal.

Posted by: Lukeh on April 6, 2003 07:13 PM

Lukeh - don't mock. It's actually the best Portugal have ever done, by a long chalk. We've never been any good at rugby, so it's quite an achievement for us.

I also support Spurs - so I guess we must agree to hate each other's guts disagree.

Grrrr...

Still, do let me know if you'll be coming to Portugal in Euro 2004. There are quite a few Arsenal fans here (my brother, for instance).

In fact, I'm only being nice to you to welcome you to 9622.net. Next time, you'll find out how I really feel! ;)

Feeling very chirpy tonight: if Boavista beat Celtic (sorry, Sarge!) there could be an all-Portuguese UEFA cup.

Quite neat, that.

Seems like an awful lot of work to go to just for some comment spam.

Or at least it would be if any of the links were real.

Color me confused.
