May 18, 2003 : Country Monkey in the Big City

Beware! Monkey tourists in New York! Readymade, bumpkin extraordinaire, is making the crass assumption that you chic and metropolitan simians might enjoy meeting the country monkey. And throwing fruit at her.

Witchstone casually threw out the May 23rd as an evening for gathering; would others be interested? Ideas, thoughts for times, cruel hazing rituals for the hayseed? (I've heard rumors that Jerry Seinfeld lives there; is that true? Could we drop in and say hello to him?)

Posted by readymade at May 18, 2003 12:18 AM

People have said these things about that :

Quick suggestion: We comment in this thread and ask jpoulous to kill the thread's doppelganger, so comments won't be spread across two threads.

Posted by: Vidiot on May 18, 2003 12:27 AM

Errr, make that "jpoulos." Sorry.

Posted by: Vidiot on May 18, 2003 12:28 AM

What? What doppelganger? I don't see anything! Heh. Damned server, embarrassing me like that!

No worries, I don't usually drool on myself in public, so when I come to New York, you won't even have to dress me in a bib. Probably.

Posted by: readymade on May 18, 2003 12:34 AM

May 23rd sounds good to me. As for ideas and times: anytime on Friday or Saturday is good for me. We could let Jonmc suggest places (but make sure you know what you're getting into.)

What sort of thing are you after? A long boozy evening in one place with lots of monkeys? A long boozy evening visiting many bars, burget joints, Japanese snackfood emporiums, et cetera? A long boozy evening in a high-class joint? A long boozy evening in a dive? (I'm starting to sense a pattern here.) Other thoughts?

Apparently Seinfeld lives somewhere on the Upper West Side. Haven't spent too much time there except for going to see movies at Lincoln Center or buying cheese at Fairway or drooling over gourmet stuff at Citarella.

Dammit! I hit "refresh" and everything, and it didn't show the first time.

Posted by: Vidiot on May 18, 2003 12:38 AM

C'mon, after seeing the pictures of various meets, you think that drooling on yourself in public is out of the question for this crowd?

Posted by: Vidiot on May 18, 2003 12:41 AM

That Seinfeld. All being uppity with his Upper West Side. Pshaw! We don't need him anyway.

I'm up for anything. I can sit in one place for a long time, but quests for alarming food are good too. I mean, we would be with the Masta after all. Maybe quest first, and sit after? Depends on how many are interested. I imagine not all are intrigued by the quest for congealed arteries, although that's practically like calling yourself Maoist commie pinko scum. Or worse, unsimian.

Posted by: readymade on May 18, 2003 01:07 AM

I lived on the Upper West Side during my abortive college career, it was OK then, it's yuppie hell now. If were looking for locations, the Cherry Tavern-where me and vidiot did tequila shooters & tecate after miss sally left- ain't a bad place to start. The booze is cheap and we're within walking distance of all kindsa cool shit. the Tile Bar, which is where we started is a great bar but not so good for big gatherings. The Cherry has a good jukebox too, anyplace that has both "Alex Chilton" and "Mama Kin" has gotta be good.

Posted by: jonmc on May 18, 2003 10:46 AM

As luck would have it, the bartender at the Tile Bar on Friday nights is a friend of mine and would take good care of us (ie. push the "value rating" up to 11, or even 13). The Cherry Tavern is a fine institution, too. Both are close to cheap eats from around the world.

Should anyone have energy later on, this should be a lot of fun. Eugene Hutz is a lively and eclectic dj, as well as the leader of the rambunctious Gogol Bordello.

Posted by: liam on May 18, 2003 11:23 AM

I just saw that the NYTimes described Gogol Bordello as "Iggy Pop meets Kafka". Now if that doesn't sound like a recipe for fun...

"Ukrainian Gypsy Pogues" works too.

Posted by: liam on May 18, 2003 11:30 AM

I can vouch for Eugene's chops. Unfortunately I rarely ever made it to the bulgarian bar-- I'm usually asleep by the time such merriment gets into full swing. Seeing as his new locale is a strip club, I'm sure I will be *even more* rueful at begging off early.

However, I'd be delighted to meet ms. readymade and our local monkeys for drinks on Friday night! Bring the pain and pocky!

Posted by: cowboy_sally on May 18, 2003 01:18 PM

Strictly speaking above a strip club; the upstairs is just a lounge. But I'll grant t'aint no nunnery neither...

Posted by: liam on May 18, 2003 01:46 PM

huh-huh...he said "taint."

Posted by: Vidiot on May 18, 2003 02:32 PM

I'm sorry I can't make it out there. Things are crazy at work right now, and I have another project in the works that will probably require my full attention for the next few weeks.

But PLEASE post pictures. And maybe these could include actual people instead of just, y'know, products on store shelves and stuff. :-)

Posted by: jpoulos on May 18, 2003 03:26 PM

I'll try to do more people, less pocky. But I want other folks to bring their digicams, too.

Posted by: Vidiot on May 18, 2003 04:35 PM

And in the comment above, please substitute "take pictures of" for "do."

Posted by: Vidiot on May 18, 2003 04:36 PM

Errr...substitute "take pictures of" for "do" in the comment above.

Posted by: Vidiot on May 18, 2003 04:43 PM

Except, of course, for the "more people" part.

Damn double posts! I waited seven freakin' minutes and it still didn't show up.

Posted by: Vidiot on May 18, 2003 04:45 PM

I have one of them digitable cameras, but nowhere to host the pictures. Anyone know of a (cheap) solution to said problem?

And while I am fond of product shots, I promise to take photos of the wildlife. If I remember to take any photos at all, which I usually don't.

The Tile Bar sounds like a gem: funky, cheap, homey, homely...all the best qualities of a bar one might look for in a "home away from home."

Posted by: readymade on May 18, 2003 05:17 PM

But on a Friday Night it's reeeealy tight in there is my only concern.

Posted by: jonmc on May 18, 2003 05:23 PM

It's usually ok until around 11pm. The East Village keeps late hours.

Posted by: liam on May 18, 2003 07:35 PM

I also think it would be great if the female simians would wear these. Perhaps the males too.

Posted by: jonmc on May 18, 2003 09:13 PM

d00d! Only if you wear this.

As to establishments, I'm not picky and know nuthin' from nuthin.' So I lay my simian experience at your feet, fellow NY monkeys.

Posted by: readymade on May 18, 2003 09:40 PM

And.....post.

Posted by: readymade on May 18, 2003 09:40 PM

I'll be glad to host your pics for you, readymade. You've got my email. Send them along when you have them.

Fes, you and me both. What can we do? Last minute Greyhound? Car pool? Out-of-body experience?

Posted by: tizzie on May 19, 2003 08:19 AM

I was going to orchastrate a series of kidnap...uh, I mean Unauthorized Physical Relocations and bring the party to me. But then I realized I was out of bean dip.

Posted by: Cyrano on May 19, 2003 09:08 AM

I think astral projection is probably the cheapest and safest way to go.

Perhaps some dinner before drinking? How about Indian food?

Posted by: witchstone on May 19, 2003 09:12 AM

Witchy! Welcome back.

Posted by: jpoulos on May 19, 2003 09:14 AM

Thank you. Notice anything different?

Posted by: witchstone on May 19, 2003 09:38 AM

aside from the third eye, no.

Posted by: jonmc on May 19, 2003 09:41 AM

Please please PLEASE make it Saturday the 24th? It's my second saturday off in 7 months, and I work Friday night until 8.

If not, I'll just have to settle for the next one when ebk swings into town.

Posted by: adampsyche on May 19, 2003 09:59 AM

That is, settle for one instead of both. Ah, you get the idea.

Posted by: adampsyche on May 19, 2003 10:15 AM

I can't do Saturday night, but perhaps readymade is up for multiple parties in her honor.

Posted by: witchstone on May 19, 2003 10:19 AM

*tries test astral projection, fails*

Shit. Kaf, what am I doing wrong here? Center chakra? check. Open eye? check. Scan the spheres? check. Project? nothing! Silver cord is intact, so Sons of Gith...? I can't figure out what's wrong.

Posted by: Fes on May 19, 2003 10:25 AM

You forgot to put the bra on your head, fes. That's crucial.

Posted by: jonmc on May 19, 2003 10:29 AM

Fuckity fuck. And that's the FIRST thing they teach you in astral projection class at boddhisattva school. I'm such a mek. My Master is probably laughing his ass off. Welcome to Monday. ~:o

Posted by: Fes on May 19, 2003 10:49 AM

grr. methinks i'll have to rearrange me schedule. what time friday, now?

Posted by: adampsyche on May 19, 2003 10:59 AM

Fes: Is that the emoticon for having a large gash in your forehead, or just feeling unkempt? If the former, get well soon.

Posted by: liam on May 19, 2003 11:03 AM

i'm thinking:

7:30 pm dinner
9:00 pm drinks

what say you, mistress readymade and the gentlefolk of new york?

Posted by: witchstone on May 19, 2003 11:13 AM

Maybe a little earlier, some of us gots long commutes home.

Posted by: jonmc on May 19, 2003 11:14 AM

But somes of us have long commutes in.

Posted by: adampsyche on May 19, 2003 11:23 AM

That time sounds fine, if I can make it at all.

Posted by: adampsyche on May 19, 2003 11:23 AM

Earlier would be better for me as well--I've got a long-ass drive ahead of me Sat. morning--what about early drinks at 6:30/dinner at 7:30/later drinks at 9? That would satisfy those of us who need to skedaddle early/don't do that *eating* thing you humans do.

readymade, do you feel like Princess Grace or what? We're all angling for an audience with you.

Posted by: cowboy_sally on May 19, 2003 11:24 AM

the drinks/dinner/drinks triple combo always works for me.

Posted by: witchstone on May 19, 2003 11:27 AM

~:o = I'm steamed (a wisp of steam is coming off my head, see?)

Weren't you ever on AOL, dude? You gotta know this stuff, if you're going to make it in the big bad internet.

the drinks/dinner/drinks triple combo always works for me.

*winces* OK, it's official, I hate you all. Damnable great plains!

Posted by: Fes on May 19, 2003 11:33 AM

whabbout locale? are we doin' Tile Bar or Cherry Tavern? Me and vidiot(9622's answer to Norm and Cliff) like the Tijuana Special...

Posted by: jonmc on May 19, 2003 11:54 AM

I vote for Tile Bar.

Posted by: witchstone on May 19, 2003 12:05 PM

I've been uncharacteristically lurky lately thanks to work kicking my ass the last couple of weeks, but I'd like to add my name to the list of people what are stoked about the Friday thingee.

And the Cherry Tavern is a stellar place to start a potentially messy night.

(I love it when we make the out of towners jealous.)

Posted by: Chico on May 19, 2003 12:06 PM

But Tile is fine too. (He added.)

Posted by: Chico on May 19, 2003 12:06 PM

I'm cool with either one, so cool you could store meat in me for a month, baby...

Posted by: jonmc on May 19, 2003 12:13 PM

Norm!

Posted by: Vidiot on May 19, 2003 12:16 PM

Maybe we can start at Cherry and go to Tile after dinner?

Posted by: witchstone on May 19, 2003 12:17 PM

You're Norm. I'm Cliff.

I guess that would make j-po Sam Malone and witchy Rebecca. cowboy_sally could be Carla and kafka woody. Chico's frasier.

Now get me a beer.

Posted by: jonmc on May 19, 2003 12:19 PM

Cool. I get Bebe Neuwith and the hit spinoff. Awright!

Posted by: Chico on May 19, 2003 12:28 PM

Actually there Normy, the ancient Romans...

Posted by: Cliff on May 19, 2003 12:42 PM

Anyone want to meet even earlier for pre-drinks? Say around 5? Then we can have the before-dinner drinks at 6:30, dinner at 7:30, and the after-dinner drinks at 9 or whenever.

Yes, I'm a lush.

--Norm

Posted by: Vidiot on May 19, 2003 12:45 PM

Ok, I got another tortured soul to cover my Friday night shift, so as long as I get dino-sitting, I'm in (and kc too, though she doesn't know it yet).

There'd better be lots of pictures. Video would be even better.

Posted by: romakimmy on May 19, 2003 12:59 PM

I'm all for Cherry, then Tile. Tecate is one of my favorite beers so the Tijuana special works fine. Also the CT jukebox is stellar, and the bar is usually empty early evening. And my buddy only starts at the Tile at 8pm.

Posted by: liam on May 19, 2003 01:40 PM

Okay, whoa. Mondays are active around here. I'll do whatever is fine for everyone else.

But up to now it looks like: cocktails at Tile Bar first, food (Indian), then cocktails later at some other class 'A' establishment? What time is this illustrious gathering starting?

Should I still swing by your work, jon? And for me, 6:30 is 3:30 pm, so I should be good and perky for you all.

Posted by: readymade on May 19, 2003 01:58 PM

Eh, meet me at the bar.

Posted by: Flyover Monkey on May 19, 2003 02:16 PM

I am also being winged away to the NYC area in June. Please plan on heavy drinking and/or debauchery.

Posted by: high-balled-keeeedo on May 19, 2003 02:20 PM

6:00-7:30 Drinks at Cherry Tavern
7:30-9:00 Some sort of sopping up of alcohol involving food
9:00-?:?? Drinks at Tile Bar

This is the plan thus far, non?

Posted by: witchstone on May 19, 2003 02:29 PM

I'm sorry--is it Cherry first, Tile later? I gotta get my ducks in a row. Anyone have an address for the Cherry? Are all these places in/near the Village, or is it an evening of trekking?

Could I ask any more questions? Why is the sky blue? Why is daddy wearing mommy's undies? Why doesn't Lupo get MY name tattooed on his ass? Huh?

Posted by: readymade on May 19, 2003 02:37 PM

Just give us an address, we'll be there.

Posted by: adampsyche on May 19, 2003 02:39 PM

All in the East Village. I thinks we need an official thread making the announcement.

Posted by: jonmc on May 19, 2003 02:42 PM

I ♥ flyover monkey. He speaks for me too.

Posted by: ufez on May 19, 2003 02:43 PM

And anyways, dejah, TCS, you guys want to do a Dallas Monkey gathering?? Can you leave the little one at home and come out for a drink or twelve Dej?

Posted by: ufez on May 19, 2003 02:45 PM

When exactly will you be in town, ebkiddo?
(and when will you be free?)

Addresses and links:
Cherry Tavern (I agree that this would be good for pre-dinner drinks, since it's roomier and Liam's pal won't be on at the Tile till later):
441 E. 6th St (betw 1st Ave & Ave A), http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7098749/
or
http://www.newyorkmetro.com/pages/details/4175.htm

Tile Bar aka WCOU Radio:
115 1st Ave (at 7th Street), http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/11350316/

And readymade, when we get there, I'll show you my ass tattoo. Suffice it to say that it puts the napkin shoutouts to shame...and there's room for EVERYONE's moniker, alas.

Posted by: Vidiot on May 19, 2003 02:51 PM

WooHoo! I love embarrassing ass-tattoos! Maybe, if it's a successful evening, everyone will have a tattoo on their ass by the end of it.

Mine will read EH*H, in honor of the Teletubbies.

Posted by: readymade on May 19, 2003 03:19 PM

Posted by: metrocake on May 19, 2003 05:21 PM

Sure it counts . . .

Posted by: metrocake on May 19, 2003 05:27 PM

c_sally, since I don't want to leave The Ranch on bad terms, will you urinize on my boss' computer for me?

thanks.

Posted by: adampsyche on May 19, 2003 06:57 PM

Given the accuracy she's claimed before, she could probably even hit it all the way from Tile Bar...

Posted by: Vidiot on May 19, 2003 06:59 PM

metrocake, how about "Ye Olde Farts and Tarts?"

I think we could do a whole "slatternly wench" thing with that that would have a certain appeal.

Posted by: tizzie on May 19, 2003 09:16 PM

Tizzie -- agreed! I'd love to be a slatternly wench! Hell, we could start a chain, make it a thundersluts franchise. :)

But is "slatternly wench" the way to go? What about "saucy trollop?"

Posted by: jonmc on May 20, 2003 09:04 AM

Yes, I think jon and I could tag-team your boss' computer what with our amazing bladders. Kinda like that scene in Strange Brew where Bob and Doug put out the fire, eh?

Rest assured I shall bring a league of nations of snacks...

Posted by: jonmc on May 21, 2003 09:03 AM

Also ya think we can get the Migster or the Uncle to call somebody's cell phone??

Posted by: jonmc on May 21, 2003 09:09 AM

I'll be there, but a little late, as I get out of work at 5, and have to traverse the Hudson River. I think I'll swim this time.

Posted by: adampsyche on May 21, 2003 11:38 AM

6:00 pm-ish it is! My cell bought the farm yesterday, so I'll try to get it replaced today, but perhaps I shall be cell-free.

I might bring a stand-in for my husband, since he's going to be working all night. It will be great fun, GREAT FUN, I tell you!

(Is it okay that I'm nervous that you're all on the brink of discovering what a yutz I am?)

Posted by: readymade on May 21, 2003 01:19 PM

Don't worry: at the last minute none of us will show up, so your secret will be safe with you.

If we're talking about this Friday, I am incommunicado, for it's my 15th annivesary and MissusFes and I have reservations at 8 here.

If we're talking about some other time, let me know and I'll slip someone a number. Or someone can slip me a number. Whateva.

Posted by: Fes on May 21, 2003 01:25 PM

What? Anniversary? What-EVUR. As if that wife of yours deserves your attention more than a bunch of reprobates do.

C'mon. Give us a number. We'll call you right in the middle of dinner.

Posted by: readymade on May 21, 2003 01:32 PM

Fat chance I'm posting my cell number HERE. Next thing I know, Kaf will be calling me collect, asking me if my refrigerator's running and giggling madly. Wouldn't matter anyway: my phone will be off during dinner - not just because it's the law in this schmancy joint, but because it's the right thing to do.

When you reprobates start snuggling up against me at night, I'll consider rethinking my priorities. Until that time? Have a great evening, and take lots of pictures :D

Posted by: Fes on May 21, 2003 01:42 PM

I'll have the Risotto with Lobster!

They have fantastic risotto, don't know about lobster, though. It's too spidery for me to eat (bleh). I think I’m having the Medaglioni Alla Zingara, but I’ll see for sure when I get there. Often as not, I ask the waiter for his recommendations, they ALWAYS know something good that’s not on the menu. The waiters at this joint rule.

A note about posting images:

We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found here. Thanks.
