OK, the 2003 NYC Monkey Fest is this Friday. I'm trying to get an idea of who's going to try and show up about when. Roll call thread! (more inside)
Posted by witchstone at May 22, 2003 09:10 AMJust wanted to put more inside for the sake of mystery.
I think the plan so far is:
6:00 Cherry Tavern (6th St. between 1st & A)
7:30 or 8:00 Dinner (probably Indian Row since it's right there)
9:00 WCOU Radio (or "Tile Bar" to the locals) (115 1st Ave - Liam you'd show up so we don't get kicked out by your friend)
If anyone is going to be arriving late and would like my cell phone number, just send me an email, which I will, of course, ignore.
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 09:12 AMHere.
As if there is any doubt. I shall bring exotic (and monkey appropriate) snacks from far-off lands. I've expanded my palette of nations.
Posted by: jonmc on May 22, 2003 09:17 AMI will be there to rock readymade like a hurricane.
Posted by: cowboy_sally on May 22, 2003 10:01 AMWhenever you need me, I'll be there
Posted by: Vidiot's brothers Marlon, Tito, Jackie, & Jermaine on May 22, 2003 10:02 AMPhew! Glad I made it into the "Top 5 Weirdest Fuckers on the Planet" list again this year. The competition was stiff, but I'm pleased I made the cut.
Posted by: Vidiot on May 22, 2003 10:58 AMVidiot, with a little luck and some extra workout time at A Salt & Battery in the offseason, you've got it in you to be the Weirdest Fucker Anywhere by next year. Just saying.
So? How bad do you want it, bah-rutherrr?
(Oh, my bad self will be there tomorrow with bells on. I wouldn't miss this for anything.)
Posted by: Chico on May 22, 2003 12:20 PMI'll be there, and hopefully in time for dinner. I get off werk at The Ranch at 5 (but will probably cut out earlier), and will be driving in...can we nail down where dinner will be so I can go straight there if I'm that late? Not a biggie, but I'll shoot for Cherry Tavern.
Posted by: adampsyche on May 22, 2003 12:34 PMI don't know where the best place for dinner would be since we don't know how many people are coming yet (or how long they're staying, etc.) How about cell phone communication? This is what they live for.
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 12:40 PMActually, my phone lives for those moments when I clean it of dust and debris. It thrives on that kind of individual attention.
Ok, I'll call if I'm running late.
Posted by: adampsyche on May 22, 2003 12:53 PMThere's the whole row of cheap Indian restaurants nearby, of which Panna II is surprisingly good, given the kitschy chili-light decoration. Also nearby, the Three of Cups does good Italian food and can usually seat big parties.
Posted by: liam on May 22, 2003 12:58 PMI'll be there with something on--probably not bells, but maybe that bra jon was so eager to see.
I mean, I'll be there if my plane doesn't get hijacked this morning. It is a code "tangerine," after all.

(Should that have sounded cheeky and insensitive, it's a symptom of the fact that I hate to fly under any circumstances. Proceed with the light banter. Regardless, I will be there at the Cherry, after a nervous breakdown in my layover in Salt Lake City. Anyone you want me to greet, witchy?)

New York's emergency drill, by popular consensus: Make straight for a bar and hunker down.
Posted by: liam on May 22, 2003 01:13 PMWell, you could give a shout-out to Crash (who hasn't been seen around these parts lately, perhaps he has finally converted).
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 01:15 PMPerhaps someone could wear these..
Nice yes, but think, what's in a Snickers? Nuts. And nuts just ruin a woman if you ask me.
Posted by: jonmc on May 22, 2003 01:15 PMPanna II is the one one the right, n'est-ce pas? That's the one I usually go to, but definitely not good for a group of more than 4 people. There are bigger ones along 6th St.
I've only ever been downstairs at Three of Cups (my favorite Metal Lounge), but I've heard the food there is pretty great.
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 01:17 PMI probably shouldn't weigh in seeing as I'll likely only be on the cherry tavern leg of this shindig, but I think that the Gandhi (on 6th) is a good place for crowds. I just had a dinner with 8 people there a coupla weeks ago.
Panna II used to be better than it is now. I guess they changed chefs. The rivalry btwn the Panna II doorman and the other one is fierce. I once watched them get into a fistfight over customers. The Panna II guy took off one of his shoes and was hitting the other guy on the head.
I also like the downstairs part of Three of Cups for the music and the voyeurism. Perhaps you should all retire there after the Tile Bar....oh la la.
Posted by: cowboy_sally on May 22, 2003 01:35 PMI'll be at Cherry Tavern, but can't make dinner. :( So DRINK QUICK, everyone! :D
Posted by: metrocake on May 22, 2003 01:37 PM...and we do gots to get readymade her first deep fried mars bar at some point, the place is nearby. Trust me, it's worth the angioplasty..
Posted by: jonmc on May 22, 2003 01:51 PMI'll third the motion to rock out in the Three of Cups basement. What point is there in an East Village if you don't visit many different bars within yards of each other?
Posted by: liam on May 22, 2003 02:13 PMIf we want to do 3 of Cups, we'll have to get there before 10pm. Otherwise we have to wrestle the couches out the of the hands of the B&Ters (sorry Adam & Karen!).
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 02:23 PMThis 3 of Cups place isn't some kinda velvet rope type of joint is it? I never get let into those...
Posted by: jonmc on May 22, 2003 02:38 PMThis 3 of Cups place isn't some kinda velvet rope type of joint is it
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Did you miss the part where I called it a Metal Lounge? As in Heavy Metal.
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 02:45 PMIt has, unfortunately, become more popular with the gold chain crowd on the weekends over the past year. Because of a Time Out recommendation or something.
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 02:47 PMVidiot, with a little luck and some extra workout time at A Salt & Battery in the offseason, you've got it in you to be the Weirdest Fucker Anywhere by next year. Just saying.
Uh, thanks, I think.
Now that's a "workout" I can get behind. Or die trying.
Most likely the latter.
Posted by: Vidiot on May 22, 2003 02:54 PMI had a birthday party at Three of Cups once. They can certainly handle a group just fine. And the food is quite good. Decent variety, too, if I recall. We'll be fine there.
Posted by: Chico on May 22, 2003 02:57 PMLet's just put all the restaurants in a hat and then have a drunk person at the end of the bar choose one.
Or how about we just see what readymade wants to do?
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 03:07 PMWe could just wander (okay, okay, make that "stagger") around the corner and see what looks best...or let readymade pick.
("Let the girl with the spiky bra pick the restaurant"...advice handed down to me long ago.)
Posted by: Vidiot on May 22, 2003 03:14 PMOn a side note:
You ever been in the employee men's room and been checking yourself in the mirror, leaning up against the countertop that you didn't realize was wet? Then started walking back towards your cube, and realized you had a huge water stain on the front of your jeans??
All I gotta say is thank god this is a casual office, and I can take my shirt tail out otherwise the rest of the folks in the building would be all, "Isn't it nice that company hires the handicapped?"
Posted by: jonmc on May 22, 2003 03:26 PMRest assured that as you all are out partying and whatnot, I'll be sitting in a bar, watching the Mavericks game, writing down everyone's name on napkins dusted with teardrops.
Not b/c I'm sad or jealous or anything. It's more because the bartender where I go smells like onion piss. You know, if onions could piss.
Posted by: ufez on May 22, 2003 04:09 PMI'll save my pics for when dejah and tcs want to do a dallas meetup (hint, hint).
Posted by: ufez on May 22, 2003 04:22 PMOtherwise we have to wrestle the couches out the of the hands of the B&Ters
What's a B&Ter?
Posted by: adampsyche on May 22, 2003 04:35 PMYet another way for snarky Manhattanites to feel superior. Stands for Bridge & Tunnel -- i.e., what non-Manhattanites have to use to hang out in the exalted precincts of the East Village.
Feh. I LIKE my backyard in Queens.
Posted by: Vidiot on May 22, 2003 04:57 PMBut mostly means people from Jersey!
Actually, I use it to mean people who wear gold chains and who don't come into the city except on the weekends.
Or basically, anyone who annoys me. My best friends live in Brooklyn and Queens, I ain't hatin'.
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 05:05 PM: sniff : But I live in SUFFOLK COUNTY! I'm the ULTIMATE B&T!
Posted by: metrocake on May 22, 2003 05:18 PM*pets metrocake's head*
There, there. Just let it all out.
Posted by: witchstone on May 22, 2003 05:21 PMReadymade will be having 3.4 more drinks tomorrow night than she would do as an average non-New Yorker (in the US).
Posted by: liam on May 22, 2003 06:37 PMHuh. I thought they were usually referred to as "outlanders", but that works too. Does it count if you only go into the city for 9622 meetups?
Posted by: adampsyche on May 22, 2003 09:19 PMPhhhhbbbrtttt, adampsyche, I work in Manhattan. I'm there every day!
Posted by: roe/metrocake on May 22, 2003 11:13 PM3.4 more drinks per night than the rest of the nation? Jesus. Well, we do have 2.5 hours more bar time.
Posted by: witchstone on May 23, 2003 08:57 AMDoes that number take into account mooks like me who get liquored up on Metro-North?
Posted by: jonmc on May 23, 2003 09:17 AMOK, if you all are going to be running late (post-Midnight EST?), someone email me a number and I'll call up.
Posted by: Fes on May 23, 2003 09:44 AMTransit drinks are liquor loopholes that don't go down in the alco-counting column, the poor man's Bermuda.
Posted by: liam on May 23, 2003 10:21 AMAlso, drinking out of a paper bag on the street doesn't count.
Posted by: witchstone on May 23, 2003 10:54 AMhey new york folk, just wondering if any of you have any info on open mic nights around the city. i have a friend who is a performance artist and she's got a piece that she's doing at the FUSE festival on june 20, but she'll be in town the week before and would like to either do something at an open mike, or find a venue to do the show at additionally.
any ideas? got to be a place that LGBT-issues friendly.
you can check out her website here.
come on, 9622, it's time to start giving back.
Posted by: witchstone on May 23, 2003 12:36 PMA friend of mine does similar stuff. I'll drop her a line.
Posted by: Vidiot on May 23, 2003 12:42 PMgah! i'm not going to be able to make it.
(i'm sure you're all just so disappointed)
anyway, just pretend that the weirdo at the bar is me, and introduce yourself.
Posted by: Ryan on May 23, 2003 02:35 PMUh...Fes...wait just a sec. If you're going out to dinner for your anniversary, then shouldn't you be...uh...workin' a lil'magic afterwards? Not calling monkies after midnight? Hmmmmm? :D
Posted by: metrocake on May 23, 2003 02:43 PMdinner at 8, home by 10:30... by 10:40, I'm seeing what's on HBO.
It's been 15 years, people. I know where the buttons are, and how to hit 'em.
Posted by: Fes on May 23, 2003 02:47 PMPlus Aunt Flo's in town, anyways.
God fes, but you are one suave mofo.
Posted by: cowboy_sally on May 23, 2003 02:53 PMHome by 10:30, HBO by 10:40?! Fes, babe, that's not even a minute for every year you've been together. You can do better than that! :)

It precludes certain services I very much enjoy performing, signorina.
I just got off the phone with Chico, Witchy, Readymade and Vidiot, and they sound like they are having a great time. I wish I was in NYC. Salut!
Posted by: Fes on May 24, 2003 01:01 AMI left the group at 8:30-ish -- got home at 11:00pm. I'm glad they're still out there...damn my commute!
(T'was fun, though!)
Posted by: roe/metrocake on May 24, 2003 01:28 AMJust home now. Pics prolly not up till tomorrow afternoon (gonna sleep the sleep of the dead/drunk, then I have plans, THEN I can put up pics.) 'Twas fun indeed, and Fes is a good sport for deigning to talk with inebriated monkeys.
Posted by: Vidiot on May 24, 2003 03:28 AMmarty & I mjust got home.. I can almost guaratee we got drunker than you NYC peeps
Posted by: tj on May 24, 2003 03:37 AMPics here. More to come, most likely, from other monkeys. (I don't think I got all the shoutouts, f'r instance.)
Posted by: Vidiot on May 24, 2003 05:29 AMThe pics (again) are GREAT.
I love every shot. I just can't decide who's got the best smile - y'all are so cute!
And I think it's very resourceful that you sold readymade and witchstone to the sailors in order to pay for the evening. That's good thinking, there.
Posted by: tizzie on May 24, 2003 08:48 AMHeh. Pictures (and yes, a brief movie) later. Gotta go to werk at The Ranch and cuss out some customers.
Posted by: adampsyche on May 24, 2003 08:54 AMDear NYC monkeys,
You are a bunch of the most suave and charming bastards I ever met. Smart, funny, hot, funny, powerful drinkers, funny, kind, etc....I had a great time. The bars were awesome, the food was great, and the company was divine.
There was not even one incident of public lice-picking. I was completely impressed! Plus, you are far too generous, buying this country girl a lovely meal.
The only concern I have is that I left without proper goodbyes--I was a little addled by the end, and hope that I made myself clear about how great it was. If I didn't,
DAMN, BUT YOU ARE SOME FINE MONKEYS! I had a wonderful time. It exceeded all of my simian expectations. And I hope that most of you aren't suffering the powerful effects of the debbil hangover.
And Fes, thanks for the call. It was lovely to have another symbolic monkey at the bar.
(Do you realize I didn't get one single photo? What a maroon!)

But hey, it's always great to meet a fellow monkey from far off, and to put a face to the nickname. We certainly had a wonderful time too...and thanks for spending part of your vacation with us!
Posted by: Vidiot on May 24, 2003 03:00 PMCome back again, and we'll getcha a Deep Fried Mars Bar. Has to be experienced. Doubt they have anything like THAT in Oregon.
(And if you want to get one before you leave town, it's this place.)

Readymade, it was a gas last night. I'm glad you got a reasonable taste of how it's properly done. A lovelier and more engaging guest I could not imagine having the pleasure of helping to entertain.
And I only got three pics last night myself, for some reason. Here they are:
ThePhil's partner, Witchy & Readymade
And it was great that everyone got to wish Fes Happy Anniversary too. (And we get to do this again in a couple of weeks? Jeezus. I better rest up.)
Posted by: Chico on May 24, 2003 06:22 PMIt was great talking to you all, thanks for the anniversary well-wishes, and foto shoutouts galore! Thank you all, especially Chico, Witchstone and Vidiot. Readymade, I'm glad they showed you a good time, and it was a treat to talk to you.
I gotta get back to New York.

And don't you make me beg for more
Give a little bit of heart and soul
Better late than never, I suppose. I spent yesterday white-knuckled on 1-95 in the torrents of rain surrounded by a convoy of mentally challenged thrill-seeking SUV drivers.
But I did want to say that I had a lovely time on Friday. So psyched to finally meet readymade and to hang out with the usual suspects. I brought my corn lolly home for an unsuspecting mr._sally who sadly didn't enjoy(?) it as much as I did.
Also, how jealous am I to have missed this photo op?
(Very.)
Posted by: cowboy_sally on May 27, 2003 09:18 AMYou'll also notice that you don't see me in any pictures after that one. I mean they had to settle the bar tab somehow.
But it's OK. The sailors treat me gently and I only have to wear the mermaid costume on saturday nights.

"can weed be scored here"
"I wunder what the barmaid looks like nekkid?"
perhaps better safe than sorry.
Also, a co-worker has complimented me on my new haircut, and I havent cut my hair in 2 months.

I sincerely hope you mean the trucker-hatted one (she saw the light and took the damn hat off) at Cherry Tavern, and NOT Tom at Tile Bar. I wouldn't call him a barmaid.
