June 04, 2003 : I Went Out to the Ball Game

Yeah, sportsfilter... but it sure was an interesting nite at the old ball game!

Posted by tizzie at June 04, 2003 08:16 AM

People have said these things about that :

Lupo, I gotta tell you, Major League Baseball is so two-faced.

As far as I know, Pete is still banned from the game, right? But you would not know it in that new stadium. They have quotes from Pete posted on the walls, and pictures of him everywhere, and a bar named the "4192 Club." Hello??

Plus beers cost twice as much as they did at Riverfront, and hot dogs are $5.

Posted by: tizzie on June 4, 2003 08:21 AM

And Peter Frampton sang Take me out to the Ballgame at the 7th inning stretch. I'm not making this up.

Posted by: tizzie on June 4, 2003 08:22 AM

Am I the only one who sees a resemblance between former EPA head and former NJ governor Christine Todd Whitman and Brenda from Six Feet Under?

Posted by: adampsyche on June 4, 2003 08:51 AM

Adam, I'm pleased to see that you've decided to keep me company over here in the "I ain't tellin' about my sex life on the intarweb" thread, heehee.

Posted by: tizzie on June 4, 2003 09:34 AM

It was an interesting night at this ballgame, too. Which is worse, using a corked bat to gain an advantage in a game, or illegally gambling on one's own team? I don't necessarily know the answer to that question, but it seems the punishments (fine for the former, banned for life for the latter) are grossly disproportionate.

And adam, there is a resemblence, but at least Whitman smiles once in a while. Even when Rachel Griffiths smiles, it's really just a smirk (not that that's a bad thing).

Posted by: pardon me on June 4, 2003 09:36 AM

Christie Whitman always frightened me for some reason.

Posted by: jonmc on June 4, 2003 09:41 AM

I'm enjoying the irony of a baseball thread to take one's mind off a sex thread.

Posted by: Cyrano on June 4, 2003 09:42 AM

The first time I saw Rachel Griffiths (in Muriel's Wedding, which is one of my favorite movies) I thought "It's the Australian Juliette Lewis!" That was when Juliette Lewis was still around and not playing retarded people.

And tizzie, I caught the end of the game last night and thought of you.

Posted by: witchstone on June 4, 2003 09:43 AM

Muriel's Wedding! That's it! I knew I had seen her somewhere before!

Witchstone, thank you for clearing up that little mystery, which I could have cleared up on IMDB but forgot all about it.

Posted by: tizzie on June 4, 2003 09:52 AM

Can we get a local roll call for the meetup this Friday? I don't think kc's gonna make it, but I will.

Don't look so disappointed!

Posted by: adampsyche on June 4, 2003 10:32 AM

I'll be there.

Posted by: Vidiot on June 4, 2003 11:05 AM

Me Too.

Posted by: jonmc on June 4, 2003 11:08 AM

christ, adam! derail the thread a third time, why don'tcha.

yes, frampton interrupted my baseball broadcast last evening. truly truly frightening.

but not as frightening as a $5 hot dog.

Posted by: Ryan on June 4, 2003 12:12 PM

The whole "Great American Ballpark" thing was very Disney-fied. We had totally incredibly excellent seats that my company gave me - but they were $50 seats! The guy sitting next to me had 3 little kids, and I felt like asking him how the hell he could afford to bring them!

I used to go to lots of games at Riverfront at the last minute - walk over, go to the window and get a red-level seat for $5 (honest!) and have a $2.50 beer and a $1.50 hot dog. Yeah, they had goofy stadium organ music and not hip-hop tunes, and no big-screen graphics and all that, but who needs that stuff, really?

Posted by: tizzie on June 4, 2003 12:18 PM

That was confusing - the Frampton tunes were seperate from the hip-hop. Each Reds player had an individual "signature" h-h theme that went with their on-screen video for each at bat.

It was like the MTV baseball awards.

Posted by: tizzie on June 4, 2003 12:21 PM

Sad, yes. But necessary if they're gonna pay Griffey and Dunn and Kearns' salaries in a few years. Unfortunately, even baseball has moved into that elite bracket of sports where it's damn near impossible to take a family out. Football and basketball I can kind of understand, but with 162 games, I don't see why MLB teams can't thank their fans with affordable seats -- and food.

It's one of the reasons that for a few summers I swore by the local non-affiliated team. You could get tickets for less than $10, in a nice new (but small) ballpark, get decently-priced food, and watch an ok game. What more do you need?

Posted by: Ryan on June 4, 2003 12:35 PM

I'm enjoying the irony of a baseball thread to take one's mind off a sex thread.

Wait, this thread and the thread that turned into you sexual ventures have a lot in common: How far on base you've cracked you bat.

"I don't think kc's gonna make it, but I will."

And what about the Sunshine Band?

Posted by: Crash on June 4, 2003 12:42 PM

Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand

Posted by: Crash on June 4, 2003 12:44 PM

What more do you need?

Biscuits?

Posted by: ufez on June 4, 2003 12:53 PM

ryan, you inspired me to look up tickets for the brooklyn cyclones out on coney island. sadly, they are sold out through the end of july, so i won't be able to go to a game.

Posted by: witchstone on June 4, 2003 12:56 PM

witchie -- that's a great idea.

an even better idea? schedule a meetup at a game. food, drinks, and something to do/watch/talk about for those not entirely interested in eating or drinking. plus, if we gathered enough people, we could probably go as a 'group' and have 96622.net flashed on the scoreboard in between innings.

anyone else interested?

Posted by: Ryan on June 4, 2003 02:02 PM

9622.net even.

(tho it would be fun to confuse those silly patrons who would do something as silly as look us up after the game)

Posted by: Ryan on June 4, 2003 02:03 PM

dammit, i can't go! i'm moving!

you're all bastard people!

Posted by: witchstone on June 4, 2003 02:19 PM

Welcome to Flyover Country, Witchy.

Posted by: Cyrano on June 4, 2003 02:25 PM

*sniffs*

I'd hardly call San Diego "flyover country," Cyrano.

*adjusts sunglasses and fake breasts*

Posted by: witchstone on June 4, 2003 02:35 PM

My definition of "Flyover Country" is pretty much "Not NYC."

And I was born in San Diego, so if you drive by Mercy Hospital give it a wave for me, por favor.

(Also, that first gust of cool, Pacific air as you walk out of the airport terminal is just sublime.)

*ogles fake breasts*

Posted by: Cyrano on June 4, 2003 02:46 PM

Love the minor league ball. (Used to work for this team, and caught a LOT of games.) There are the Staten Island Yankees too, if you can't make a Cyclones game.

Posted by: Vidiot on June 4, 2003 03:03 PM

The whole point of the Cyclones, though, is the trip to Coney Island--which is neither coney, nor an island: discuss.

Posted by: witchstone on June 4, 2003 03:15 PM

A "coney" is a rabbit, and if there are lots of rabbits on an island, they just take over (see: Australia), which is what happened for years at Coney Island when the teens would get all hot and heavy on the Ferris Wheel. They met, mated, multiplied, repeated the cycle, just like coneys!

Really, it's so obvious.

Ranger's have a team up the road from Dallas, in Frisco, which is closer than Arlington for me.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on June 4, 2003 03:37 PM

Our Lowell Spinners is considered by many the most successful (financially and attendance-wise, not necessarily on the field) minor league team in the last decade. NPR did a little story a year or two ago about the franchise.

Posted by: jpoulos on June 4, 2003 03:42 PM

Here's the NPR piece (four years ago--times flies) about "Birth Night" at the ballpark, one of many popular promotions the club runs.

See my new site, yet I may be moving...if pitas will fix my problem.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on June 4, 2003 08:02 PM

I'd like to out myself as a homosexual now.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on June 4, 2003 09:35 PM

Hey, Common if your going to imitate me, especially coming out of a closet, do a better job dressing up my words than this, please...oh stop it, it tickles.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on June 5, 2003 07:36 AM

The guy who sat beside us had one of those digital camera cell phones and he took our pic. What a bad pic, but what a cool toy!

Note: my friend is single. Matchmaking service is available.

Posted by: tizzie on June 5, 2003 08:36 AM

She's cute, but she's probably a Pete Rose fan. :-)

Posted by: jpoulos on June 5, 2003 09:20 AM

It's rainy here in Dallas, nice to see some cute smiles to start the day.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on June 5, 2003 09:55 AM

What do Danny Aiello, John Leguizamo & Benecio Del Toro all have in common (besides their last names all ending in o)?

Posted by: witchstone on June 5, 2003 10:59 AM

Oh, it's Triva Thursday, by the way.

Posted by: witchstone on June 5, 2003 11:19 AM

Cool pic, tizzie.

Where do we sign up for the matchmaking service?

Posted by: Vidiot on June 5, 2003 11:50 AM

What do...
Thier names all sound the same with marbles in one's mouth.

Posted by: Thomcatspike on June 5, 2003 11:55 AM

they all have restraining orders against Rosie Perez?

Posted by: ufez on June 5, 2003 11:57 AM

Haven't they all appeared in drag?

Danny Aiello was in Broadway Danny Rose, John Leguizamo in To Wong Foo... and Benicio Del Toro in...um...something?

No! Wait! Is it Madonna videos? I know Aiello was her dad in Papa Don't Preach, and Del Toro was in La Isla Bonita...Leguizamo must have been in one too.

Posted by: kaf on June 5, 2003 12:31 PM

"In 1984 John landed a bit part in the Madonna video for "Borderline" playing the friend of Madonna's boyfriend."

That would seem to be it. I had Madonna in my head for some reason too, but I was thinking it was movies.

Posted by: Cyrano on June 5, 2003 12:38 PM

Wow! That was some sleuthing. And the Scooby Prize goes to Kaf & Cyrano! It is indeed Madonna videos. Although I like the Rosie Perez restraining order idea. Maybe I should start stalking celebrities with nothing in common, so that I can become the answer to a trivia question.

Kaf, I think you're the only person who remembered Benecio in the La Isla Bonita video. I don't think he even remembers. Or, did you consult our good friend IMDB?

Posted by: witchstone on June 5, 2003 12:54 PM

IMDB? Why, I would never! I've never heard of it! In fact, I don't even own a computer or have fingers!

Posted by: kaf on June 5, 2003 12:57 PM

Benicio in "The Usual Suspects" looks nothing like Benicio in "Snatch." I am sure I would not recognize him in a Madonna video unless he had a nametag on.

Posted by: tizzie on June 5, 2003 12:57 PM

Nobody looks the same when they're in snatch.

Posted by: jonmc on June 5, 2003 12:58 PM

AHA!

Which explains you not knowing John Leguizamo in Borderline, since they don't have him listed.

Posted by: witch"inspector clouseau"stone on June 5, 2003 12:59 PM

My girlfriend has made it very clear to me in the past that she would gladly allow Benicio to do any number of unsavory acts to her person.

She's also made it abundantly clear that she would not permit John Leguizamo perform said unsavory acts, although if he wants to watch, he'll have to pay $100.

I do not know where she stands on the Danny Aiello question, although I'm hoping for the best.

Posted by: ufez on June 5, 2003 01:08 PM

I'm pretty sure that any act DelToro performs is unsavory.

Posted by: jpoulos on June 5, 2003 01:13 PM

I guess eyeballkid is in new york, now.

I have this look up downtown alleys, yelling "Eyyyyeeeballll..."

Posted by: jonmc on June 5, 2003 01:13 PM

put "urge to" in there somewhere

Posted by: jonmc on June 5, 2003 01:14 PM

I'm pretty sure that any act DelToro performs is unsavory.

Oh, I certainly hope so.

Posted by: salmonberry on June 5, 2003 04:13 PM

You know what's interesting about Washington? It's the kind of place where second-guessing has become second nature.

Why not join in and say something too?
