Ha HA! First post!
Wait, where am I? Oh yes.
::dons lampshade::
Happy Birthday Ufez! Take it easy and try and enjoy this year. You still have one more year before anything you say will be taken seriously, so laff it up. (Oh, who am I kidding. I'm 4 years older than you and still nobody takes what I say seriously.)
monkeyshines?
**grabs orangutang and decanter of turtle wax**
gimme a minute.
Oh happy 24th, ufez. and don't worry, not being taken seriously is a blessing.
Posted by: jonmc on June 24, 2003 09:45 AM24 years old, 24 beers in a case...
Coincidence? I think not.
Happy Birthday, Ufez. Keep in mind: all those times when you think, "I wish I knew then what I know now..."? You know now! So go get 'em, tiger.
Posted by: Fes on June 24, 2003 09:53 AMhoppy burtday, ufez.
Let's go, let's boogaloo till we puke:
Happy birthday, Ufez. May the demon vomit fairy not sully your anniversarial hootenanny.

Posted by: riffola on June 24, 2003 01:05 PMUfez, Happy hour Birthday to you. Toasts to you and your merry day.
Happy b-day, Ufez!
24's a great age. I think. I seem to have vague memories of it being fun. (You have to cut me some slack here. There were a lot of beers in the years since then. Everything before 30 is a bit fuzzy.)
Posted by: aine42 on June 24, 2003 01:16 PMI enjoyed being 24, but I've noticed in the mumblemumble years since then that as one ages, the angst goes away a little bit, and the alcohol tolerance goes up. Which is nice. So I can safely say it gets better from here on in.
Felix Cumpleaños, my most excellent friend!
Posted by: Chico on June 24, 2003 01:28 PMThanks everyone for the well wishes and cautionary warnings. I'll be heading to this shisha bar right after work for happy hour. After that, I just hope to make it into my bed. My boss already asked me if he could expect a call in the morning. I told him more than likely it would be tonight and really slurry. This is going to be the longest afternoon ever.
And don't worry sally, I rarely expect to be taken seriously.
*drops pants, does hokey-pokey*
Posted by: ufez on June 24, 2003 01:49 PMUfie!! Happy Birthday, buddy!
I'm not sure why, but your being younger than me makes me feel all big and proud, like I've got a little brother, since I only ever had a little sister, which is stupid, but true all the same.
Happy day, kiddo.
Posted by: brittney on June 24, 2003 02:12 PMI'll be heading to this shisha bar right after work for happy hour.
Just sent you an e-mail(not sure if I have your current address); may stop by...give you a real toast.

So THAT'S what it's all about!
Happy Urp-day, dear Ufez. Why, you're almost half of a half a century old!
Posted by: readymade on June 24, 2003 02:41 PMAnyone else dropping in on Ufez? He said he is bringing a camera.
Posted by: Thomcatspike on June 24, 2003 03:44 PMWhat's a shiksa bar?
I hope you are having a fabulous day, young Jedi.
Posted by: tizzie on June 24, 2003 04:18 PMWell, "shiksa" is yiddish for a gentile, that is, non-jewish female. To Lisa's relatives I am a shikso, or would be if yiddish was a romance language.
The concept of serving gentile broads in a bar setting is unusual but novel.
Posted by: jonmc on June 24, 2003 04:36 PMShiksa = what jonmc said...
Shisha = hookah = middle eastern water pipes. Think the catepillar from Alice in Wonderland. It's tasty stuff. All kinds of flavors. I'm almost out of here... I apologize in advance if I post anything horrible whilst drubk later tonight or hungover and cranky in the morning. If I crawl in to work, that is.
Posted by: ufez on June 24, 2003 04:50 PMWhen I was in the Middle East, we could never remember the Arabic name for the water pipe, so it was demoted to the "hubbly-bubbly." Pretty soon all of our bilingual Arab friends were calling it the hubbly-bubbly too, and even some who couldn't speak a lick of English and didn't know what we said were known to stumble through "hubbly-bubbly."
Cultural imperialism at it's finest.
Posted by: readymade on June 24, 2003 05:13 PMThe filter that has been blocking my access to 9622.net at work for the last several months now says, when I do forget and click on the 9622.net link on my blog:
ACCESS TO THIS SITE HAS BEEN BLOCKED BY SONICFILTER. GET BACK TO WORK, PHIL
Okay, it doesn't actually say "Phil", it says "GET BACK TO WORK. LOVE, BIG BROTHER", but the point was still startlingly made. So, the sysadmin does have a sense of humor. He hasn't blocked my access to MeFi yet, but he did delete all my cookies so I'll need to be careful there too.
All of which is a long-winded way of apologizing for not being around much lately. BUT HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANYWAY, UFEZ!
Posted by: yhbc on June 24, 2003 09:35 PMCommish, you just described my waking nightmare.
We need a loophole, dammit. Isn't 9622 an important part of our mental health support system? Or typing practice, even.
Posted by: tizzie on June 25, 2003 07:54 AMHappy birthday, Ufez.
You've only got 50 or so years left, bet get crackn' on whatever seems important.
Thomcat did show up last night (let's see if fotolog will let me bring this image here)...
If that doesn't work, or only works for a little while, you can check it here.
I hope he got home okay last night.
Posted by: ufez on June 25, 2003 10:17 AMIs anyone but me looking at that picture and having a Hall and Oates moment?
Posted by: Fes on June 25, 2003 10:57 AMSpeaking of Hall and Oates, here's a swap update:
Number of masters done so far? 3 (me, salmonberry and anathema; salmonberry's mix is excellent, btw)
Number of people who's email address I need? 2 (dogmatic and mikrophon)
Number of people who's mailing addresses I need? 4 (jpoulos, dogmatic, liam and mikrophon)
Number of people who touched my butt last night on the train? 1 (didn't catch your name, mister!)
Number of stupid questions from colleagues fielded this morning? 2 (notable: "Is it possible to use all the hours from an AOL disk in a month?" For the record, it is possible, but you'd have to stay online for like 11 hours a day)
Volume of new tunes downloaded last night? 15.9 megabytes. (Notable? Yes, "Yours Is No Disgrace." All 9 and 3/4 minutes of it.)
Current pucker factor? 6.5 (normal: 5.0 on a 10 scale)
Posted by: Fes on June 25, 2003 11:27 AM"Yours Is No Disgrace?"
**prepares anti-Yes inoculation**
Posted by: jonmc on June 25, 2003 11:29 AMFor the record, AOL is currently offering 1045 hours over 45 days. That works out to 23.222222222 hours (23 hours, 13 minutes) per day. And is ridiculous.

Posted by: jonmc on June 25, 2003 12:28 PMI have at least written a couple of names down on a piece of paper, so my master is almost complete I guess. I'm pulling no stops, see.
SPOILER!!!
On my disc there will be nothing but swedish artists. And I'm not talking about The Hives, Sahara Hotnights, Roxette and ABBA - I'm talking underground, baby. I may even include some communist prog rock on it. But I think "may"'s the key word.
/SPOILER
Speaking of Led Zep, here there and everywhere, funny thing is that Sweden was totally unaware of them at the time. The Mighty Zep means nothing over here. I think I heard »Stairway To Heaven« for the first time when I was nineteen.
And why oh why do I always post here when I'm drunk? I suppose that's a confidence question.

Wow, 1st time out on a work night in some time, guessed it showed. But how trashed was I, think some of it was due to smoking a hookah loaded with jasmine tobacco which made me feel stoned & dopey, because it really kicked my ass. Made it home ok, and took a two day vacation on top of it. Have to say Ufez hangs with a cool crowd in cool bars, and I was glad to be a guest to it all. His hot/sexy bartender that night bought him a drink even, thought he was sooo cute but she couldn’t decide what to make him. So she asks me, which I replied, make your favorite drink for him. Now she's the only bartender working and had those 70's side pony tails going on and she says to me; don’t have a favorite, I just tend bar and not being a drinker, don't know what they taste like. I’m guessing she just does the hits/draws at the Bar she tends: hits/draws the hookah.
PS the birthday celebration ran the place out of this beer which says a lot for the drinking.
