July 13, 2003 : Tonight's the night I go to all the swaps down my street...

I wash my hair and I kid myself I swap pretty smooth...

We're a week past dead - it's time to burn, ya big apes!

Here we go: We had a total of 11 swappers (of 18) who reported having completed master disks or had master disks pending. Since 11 is an odd number and the rules state no groups over five, I have placed myself in both groups two and three. No one (including myself) is in a swap group with anyone they were in a swap group with during the spring swap, and no one is in a group with someone they have requested not to be in a group with.

Deadline for sending your disks is July 31. I'll be sending mailing addresses to the groups momentarily, probably in your mailbox by the time you read this. Anybody got any beefs? Email me.

Swappers One: "The Clint Eastwoods"

kaf
salmonberry
mikrophon
jonmc

Swappers Two: "The Lee Van Cleefs"

tizzie
vidiot
eyeballkid
fes

Swappers Three: "The Eli Wallachs"

cyrano
anathema
aine42
fes

On August 1, we'll post playlists and commence out-of-group (and out-of-swap, as needed) disk begging.

People have said these things about that :

Goodly fuck, after all the hellraisin' and lightnin' calling I forgot the friggin Commish. He replaces me in the Lee Van Cleefs.

Swapinistrator though I may be, I am proved yet human.

Posted by: Fes on July 13, 2003 01:12 AM

Most excellent work there, oh fearless leader! And may I just say that I hope all the Lee Van Cleefs enjoy my "Funky Monkey" mix as much as I enjoyed making it!

Posted by: tizzie on July 13, 2003 08:20 AM

July 31? If All goes well I'll have a new address by then. I find out for sure tommorrow night.

Posted by: jonmc on July 13, 2003 10:04 AM

If need be, Jon, I can receive your mixes and pass them on to you. Especially if you're gonna be living right around the corner. My only fee will be a copy of your mix (Consider this a preemptive beg.)

Hope my fellow Van Cleefs enjoy "Vidiot's Delight" -- and I'll post the track list and liner notes on August 1.

no one is in a group with somone they have requested not to be in a group with.

More monkey drama? Inquiring minds want to know the dirt.

The question is not if we should include a Joe Jackson opus, but how many to include?

Posted by: kafker on July 13, 2003 01:36 PM

I suppose now is as good a time as any to apologize for the total absence of Joe Jackson on my disc. I cleared it with Uncle Swapministrationist, but still find myself wracked with guilt. By way of compensation, I will try to provide access to both versions of Partytown Hospital's cover of "Steppin' Out" to any interested parties.

Word up and dig it. My shizzle's already burnded, so be on the lookout.

Posted by: mikrophon on July 13, 2003 02:08 PM

Alas, no Joe Jackson on mine either. (But Miguel isn't in this mix, so it should be okay.) Pssst! Send out Beer Nuts with your selections, just to make him really jealous!

Posted by: Vidiot on July 13, 2003 02:22 PM

Vidiot, BTW, living in your neighborhood may make me a spanakopita addict, man. Tis a scary concept.

Posted by: jonmc on July 13, 2003 02:31 PM

I'll also show you the little stand where you can get the best souvlaki in the city. And baklava. And lemon potatoes that go great with fish.

Posted by: Vidiot on July 13, 2003 02:33 PM

I specifically requested that I not swap with eyeballkid. Firstly it's because he keeps pinging me when I'm online and I'm not sure a married man should do these things, secondly because he and I were recently swapping disks through a different MeFi swap, and I'll admit to doubling up on a few of the songs.

Posted by: salmonberry on July 13, 2003 04:37 PM

No Joe Jackson on my disk either. And I didn't clear it first. I'm just a rebel that way, I guess.

Posted by: aine42 on July 13, 2003 05:31 PM

Fuck you all. You get double Joe Jackson on my disc, then, whether they go with the flow or not.

Posted by: yhbc on July 13, 2003 08:32 PM

salmonberry: SONG STEALER!

commish: I've already got one double Joe Jackson disc set. But then, one can never have enough of the man.

Also, there is no Joe Jackson on my disc. I promise that you won't miss him.

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 13, 2003 09:13 PM

So are we the Good, the Bad, or the Ugly?

Posted by: tizzie on July 13, 2003 09:26 PM

I dig the Joe Jackson myself, commish. No worries.

Also, if anyone has emailed me over the last couple weeks, I haven't gotten it because my nachtopus mail is down.

Nothin sadder than a downcast nachtopus.

Posted by: kafker on July 13, 2003 11:40 PM

So are we the Good, the Bad, or the Ugly?

depends on your swap group. You are in the Lee Van Cleef's so obviously, you must be "Bad."

There SHALL be Joe Jackson on my disk!

Posted by: Fes on July 13, 2003 11:52 PM

Joe Jackson is on my discs in spirit.

And they were mailed this morning!

Posted by: tizzie on July 14, 2003 07:57 AM

So are we the Good, the Bad, or the Ugly?

You could always be The Master Ninjas.

Posted by: Cyrano on July 14, 2003 09:04 AM

Okay, since other people are J.J.-free, I will not provide access to the Partytown Hospital covers. They suck.

Posted by: mikrophon on July 14, 2003 09:10 AM

Y'know who's really good? Joe Jackson.

Posted by: jpoulos on July 14, 2003 10:10 AM

Lupo, you just want one of my discs. But I'm gonna make you beg.

Posted by: tizzie on July 14, 2003 10:46 AM

I think it's his forehead that I like so much.

Posted by: kaf on July 14, 2003 11:20 AM

Ah! A fitting tribute to great forehead!

Lupo, you spoil us.

Posted by: kaf on July 14, 2003 11:58 AM

I propose that today be named honorary Joe Jackson Day, in the interest of repurposing Bastille Day.

Posted by: kaf on July 14, 2003 11:59 AM

It's also pips's birthday too. I suppose a big forehead vista would be an...interesting...gift.

Posted by: jonmc on July 14, 2003 12:04 PM

Joe Jackson looks a lot like the creatures who thought the hot blonde babe was freakish ugly in that "Eye of the Beholder" episode of "The Twilight Zone".

Posted by: dong_resin on July 14, 2003 12:04 PM

Joe Jackson looks a lot like Peter Frampton.

Unless it's just a syndrome where all old music guys look alike.

Posted by: tizzie on July 14, 2003 12:31 PM

The forehead-to-chin ratio has gone horribly awry.

Posted by: kaf on July 14, 2003 12:43 PM

Actually, speaking of foreheads, I think the scariest old musci guy picture I ever saw was one of David Crosby right after he was released from prison. they had shaved his beard and cut his hair short and he looked like my old gym coach only bigger.

But then again I imagine a whole lotta 80's and 90's folks are gonna look silly someday too. Imagine a 50+ Dave Grohl or a potbellied Robert Smith, even a balding pauncy Perry Farrell, age gets us all, its all you carry it I guess.

Posted by: jonmc on July 14, 2003 12:51 PM

Also, Phil Collins has just a giant, giant head.

Ms. Stone, I must inform you that today is Joe Jackson Day. Please ensure that future comments feature at least 35% JJC (Joe Jackson Content).

An example:

I saw Pirates of the Caribbean with Joe Jackson on Saturday and had a great time. Pirates and a monkey! Joe Jackson makes a great movie companion, by the way, and is available for post-movie critique.

Mr. Jackson also likes pie.

Luckily, buried somwhere on the Chrysler site, there was an ultra-extended 15 minute remix of Celine Dion's "I Drove All Night." All I had to do was just put it on the cd five times. They will be in the mail this week. Hope you enjoy.

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 14, 2003 01:59 PM

Did you know he was born in 1886 in Halifax County, Virginia?

I thought he looked old, but I honestly had no idea.

Posted by: Vidiot on July 14, 2003 02:01 PM

The real question here is "why doesn't Joe Jackson have his own post?!"

*prepares to remedy situation*

Posted by: kaf on July 14, 2003 02:07 PM

I thought it was understood that Joe Jackson escorted me to Pirates of the Caribbean. 95% of the time when I say "I went to XXXX" I am really saying "Joe Jackson and I went to XXXX." As my good friend Basquiat once said to me, when we were having lunch with Madonna, "I just think that it's tacky to name-drop. Can you pass the jalapeno cornbread?"

Posted by: witchstone on July 14, 2003 02:16 PM

Celine Dion's "I Drove All Night."

Is that a cover of the Cyndi Lauper tune?

Apropos of nothing at all, the names of "people" who've sent me spam in the past 24 hours or so:

Who comes up with this stuff?

Posted by: Vidiot on July 14, 2003 02:22 PM

And is "Joly" the last name of Julio, the Suicidal Bagel Shop Manager?

If you're sending out spam, Julio, then go ahead and off yourself. See if I care.

I just want to mention, totally off topic, that my reasoning for no longer wanting my next car to be a Chrysler 300M, a car I found to be sporty, luxurious and affordable, is the fact that Canada's most irritating export is now providing the soundtrack for their commercials.

I now want a volkswagen. At least they had the taste to use Moonpools and Caterpillars in an ad a few years back.

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 14, 2003 02:48 PM

I rented a 300M and while it drove well, the interior seemed like it was designed by a sightless cave fish who didn't need anything to be within reach or make sense.

Go VW! Jooooin us!

Did anybody get their swap discs from me??
*performance anxiety*

Posted by: tizzie on July 17, 2003 11:34 AM

I'm finally, finally burnt. Will post tomorrow.

What's the story with the track lists? Do we post them here, or would peopple prefer surprises?

I mean, who wants to know in advance that they're getting the Roxette B-Sides collection?

Posted by: kaf on July 17, 2003 11:38 AM

Originally, I posted that I would start a thread here devoted to tracklists and cover art on Aug 1, the day after the swap deadline. The idea being, all disks would be out, there would be no turning back, and the tracklists would be a sort of display for inter-swapgroup swapping. If poeple saw a disk they liked, they could petition the maker for a copy, that sort of thing.

I still plan on doing exactly that. I'll post my cover art and track list on Aug 1, two weeks from tomorrow, and anyone who wants a copy of my disk need only ask.

You all do like Journey, right?

Posted by: Fes on July 17, 2003 12:30 PM

UNLESS we are all going to have our disks long sent by deadline day, in which case we can post tracklists and such anytime we feel like it, I suppose. I leave it to the will of the collective!

Posted by: Fes on July 17, 2003 12:32 PM

My mix ("Monkey Can-Do") will likely post tomorrow. 22 flavors of rock music, dating between 1972 and 2003.

I left off the metal, the esoteric/experimental guitar rock instrumentals and the hip hop, but if anyone feels up to the challenge, let me know.

Posted by: mikrophon on July 17, 2003 12:35 PM

OK fine, then. But somebody better start a new thread about something! Isn't it anybody's birthday?

Funky and Sorta Punky Monkey Mix received from Tizzie! And it is indeed chock full of Rundgrenny-Westerbergy goodness!

However, my own most recent maggot opus will be a little delayed on account of my stupidly (and accidently) telling MusicMatch Jukebox that, yes, I wanted to upgrade to version 8, realizing my mistake and trying to cancel and then realizing that now I wouldn't have the old version, and would need to reinstall the whole thing over again ... this took a little time.

The whole pounding-the-head-on-the-keyboard thing also cost me some time. But everything seems to be working again now, bay-bies! Mail will be out hopefully by Tuesday next.

I just got back from a camping trip so I have to burn 'em and send 'em. As soon as I get my cover art done. Which I'll do once I find my tracklist. Which is somewhere with the masterdisc.

I should be able to get mine out this week. I'll get there. In the meantime, enjoy this picture from my vacation:

That's right. The sign, in effect, is telling you not to hit the bighorn sheep, cause that means there's less of them to shoot.

Western Canada is all about the fun.

Posted by: salmonberry on July 20, 2003 10:14 PM

Hi there swappers

I just got Mikrophon's mix in the mail, and boy are my arms tired! But I kid.

First listen, from the other room, while I ws doing the dishes, very very good. I have to say that some of the tracks seemed a little more beneficial than others in the whole getting-three-day-old-tuna-salad-off-the-plates thing.

I will delve deeper, ever deeper, as the days go on.

Then, one day, I'll be dead. And then where will you be?

Posted by: kaf on July 22, 2003 12:49 AM

I have recieved the cd of Tizzie and it was good. (more later, when i have a moment)

I may be repeating myself, but my cds are going out this week.

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 22, 2003 02:46 AM

I'm lame. I still need to finish burning. Will hopefully get them out sometime this week.

Haven't listened to anyone's yet -- still plowing my way through 10 MeFi mix CDs. (So much new and cool music to listen to!)

Posted by: Vidiot on July 22, 2003 09:21 AM

I, on the other hand, got the Kafker disque in the mail yesterday. My only windows for listening have been driving here and there, but so far, so good. I'm surprising myself with the tracks I'm loving.

Posted by: mikro on July 22, 2003 09:47 AM

My mixes are going out this week as well. You all DO like Journey and REO Speedwagon, right? I hope so. Super neat!

Here's a question: Since radio is so woeful, how do you all go about finding out about new bands? I mean, is there a place that one can go and say, well, plug in a band you like in one box, and out comes a list of Bands You Might Enjoy? OR do you all just ask Jon? Since I have a dialup at home and that's where I do most of my steal- downloading, I am somewhat reluctant to put a lot of time into trying out new bands straight. (Good example: Cat Power. GREAT buzz, and I love chick singers, but holy christ she's fucking depressing. I downloaded her cover of the Stones' Satisfaction, which I figured would be a nice peppy tune, and I wanted to slit my wrists lengthwise by a minute-35). These swaps do a lot of good (buckets of thanks to Twos for New Pornographers and to Chico for Bree Sharp!), but honestly, it ain't enough, and I'm a parochial enough to be particular about what I put in my ears.

Thoughts?

Posted by: Fes on July 22, 2003 09:55 AM

I hear about bands through friends, through internet acquaintances, etc. Mostly, I kind of explore one band and find others related to it. It's like with books. I never would have found my way to Knut Hamsun if Henry Miller hadn't been into him.

Also, Knut Hamsun plays a mean rhythm-master.

(And, FilePile helps)

Here's my badly pixellated cover.

And track list:

Pinback - Boo
Luke Haines - How to Hate the Working Classes
Big Black - Steelworker
Talvin Singh - Sutrix
Underworld - Two Months Off
Mercury Rev - Opus 40
The Long Winters - Mimi
Cat Power - Wonderwall
The Sea and Cake - The Colony Room
The Teardrop Explodes - Strange House in the Snow
Palace Music - Cat’s Blues
Magazine - I Love You You Big Dummy
The Long Winters - Stupid
LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
Eels - Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues

Posted by: jonmc on July 22, 2003 12:08 PM

haha. Not at all, Fes.

Besides, you know I love the wrist-slashing stuff.

Posted by: kaf on July 22, 2003 12:09 PM

It is indeed a Beefheartian effort.

Posted by: kaf on July 22, 2003 12:10 PM

Interesting Beefheart related story to tell if you wanna hear it.

Posted by: jonmc on July 22, 2003 12:12 PM

I love the eels. I think I may have to go see him (them) again, there's a show next Thursday.

Posted by: witchstone on July 22, 2003 12:14 PM

I almost did a theme disc around "beautiful day" tunes, either from the group "It's a Beautiful Day" or songs with that in the title/lyrics - including that Eels tune.

Good idea, lousy follow-through.

Posted by: tizzie on July 22, 2003 12:21 PM

I don't know the Eels all that much, really. The song I put on the comp was from another random swap (as, in fact, are many of the songs on my disc). I thought for a long time that it was Wilco (!)

Since, I have obtained one of their bootlegs, and like it very much. Some of the songs are really heartbreaking, which is right up my street...I have heard mixed things about their new album.

And, Beefheart away, Jon.

And that's another way I find good music. Swapping boots over the net.

Posted by: kaf on July 22, 2003 12:24 PM

Nothin' major, just an odd coincidence. About two months ago, I was at my after work joint the tile bar(where the alcoholocaust occured) and I noticed that the two mid-40's guys next to me where talking about Beefheart. I mentioned I was a fan and after the usual response of "where'd a young guy like you get into this" one of them handed me his discman, and told me on the DL that the Magic Band were gonna tour again without the Captain, and said the CD was a live recording. It was impressive, he told me that they might tour again and that he'd let me know (he holds up a stool at the joint as well, during the alcoholocaust, he came up and gave me 50 cents he claimed he owed me).

They next day at work, I was handed a book of new release copy data to enter and lo and behold, what was in it, but a live recording of the Magic Band without beefheart. What're the odds.

I feel so hep and in the loop I can hardly stand myself. But yeah I loves me the captain. I plan on playing "Abba Zabba" for my kids should I ever inflict my offspring on the earth.

I have 3 of their albums (beautiful freak, electroshock blues & souljacker) and i really like them, especially beautiful freak because it's like an old friend. electroshock blues is heartbreaking. e, who basically is the eels, lost his father at 19. then in 1996, after the first album came out, his sister (& his only sibling) committed suicide while his mother was dying of cancer. so EB is pretty intense. souljacker i haven't listened to as much, but there's some great stuff on there. i didn't even know that they had a new album, although a tour would seem to indicate that.

he sang a fantastic moogy 60's version of "get ur freak on" at the last show. loved it.

i try to put the eels on mix albums because not a lot of people know them and i think more people should. i'm like an eels missionary.

Posted by: witchstone on July 22, 2003 12:33 PM

Oh and also, my discs may be a bit late. I still gotta type up liners. Apologies.

Posted by: jonmc on July 22, 2003 12:34 PM

I should get some Eels, then. I'm all about the death.

I think what worried me was that I would get the "bad" album right off the bat and be repelled. But you think "Beautiful Freak" is a good starting point?

Posted by: kaf on July 22, 2003 12:41 PM

And maybe the "new" album I'm thinking of is "Souljacker".

Posted by: kaf on July 22, 2003 12:42 PM

no, they had one come out in june, apparently. shootenany.

Posted by: witchstone on July 22, 2003 12:45 PM

kaf, is your email working now? i remember you said something about problems with it.

Posted by: witchstone on July 22, 2003 12:48 PM

It's OK now. I just have to access it from the web front end.

Posted by: kaf on July 22, 2003 12:50 PM

You have a webbed front end?

Received Cyrano's mix yesterday. Haven't had a chance to listen yet. I still have extras if anyone wants a copy.

Posted by: ana on July 22, 2003 01:13 PM

Since radio is so woeful, how do you all go about finding out about new bands?

I heard an excellent tune at lunch today, and it was from "Circle" by Indigenous. On the not-woeful radio, heh.

Posted by: tizzie on July 22, 2003 01:27 PM

One of my best friends in high school founded Rykodisc. I used to write for the newspaper he printed in his basement, "The Big Times."

Posted by: tizzie on July 22, 2003 02:03 PM

I think I speak for all of us hear when I say to you, fair Tizzie, rad!

Posted by: kaf on July 22, 2003 02:08 PM

I'll take one of those extras, ana. Since I haven't burned mine yet I can add another to my list.

Posted by: salmonberry on July 22, 2003 02:29 PM

Holy Shit. We just had what looked an awful lot like a tornado go by. One of my co-workers had his head out the window watching the lightning started screaming "Holy Shit! It's a tornado" and freaking everybody the hell out. That caused more consternation then the weather.

Posted by: jonmc on July 22, 2003 02:42 PM

Try not to land on a witch, jon.

Posted by: tizzie on July 22, 2003 03:32 PM

Oh, but I'd look so fabulous in those ruby slippers...

Posted by: jonmc on July 22, 2003 03:33 PM

You should ask the boss for the rest of the day off salmonberry.

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 22, 2003 04:09 PM

That was very weird. I swear that I thought the mini tornado story was from sal and not jon.

Never mind.

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 22, 2003 05:17 PM

I ate a mini-oreo, and now I don't feel so well.

You're right ebk, perhaps I should ask the boss for the rest of the day off.

Posted by: salmonberry on July 22, 2003 06:07 PM

*asks boss for rest of day off*

*red-faced boss, neck veins bulging, orders Vidiot back to work*

*Vidiot trembles and hopes to escape the lash*

Posted by: Vidiot on July 22, 2003 06:40 PM

*writes a scrip for Vidiot's boss*

*writes a medical note for Vidiot*

problem solved.

My track list:

Edie Brickell - Good Times (with cameo by the late, great Barry White)
Todd Rundgren - I'm So Proud (Medley)
New Radicals - You Get What You Give
James Brown - Living in America
Laura Nyro & Labelle - Monkey Time/Dancing in the Streets
Paul Westerberg - Daydream Believer
Paul Westerberg - Knockin on Mine (SNL)
Replacements - Last Train to Clarksville with I'm In Trouble
Sex Pistols - (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone
Isley Brothers - Fight the Power

The Edie Brickell song is worthwhile anyway, but it's there because of Barry White. The first time I heard "You get what you give" I thought it was Todd Rundgren - anyway, I like it best in that context. I heard the James Brown tune on someone else's car radio recently while I was waiting at a red light and it got me to dancin'. Laura Nyro is someone I loved since I was a little girl. I always loved women who can belt out a tune, and it says 'monkey.'

The Westerberg/Replacement bits are odd ones that aren't from albums so I thought you might not have 'em. The Sex Pistols doing Paul Revere and The Raiders seemed like a fine idea, and the Isley Brothers recorded "Fight the Power" in Cincinnati. So there you have it - ten songs doesn't seem like much but hey, I grew up with vinyl.

Posted by: tizzie on July 22, 2003 09:48 PM

You Get What You Give is one of those songs that can always put me in a good mood. It's like music crack! Except without the giving blowjobs to strangers for money to buy more part.

Posted by: witchstone on July 23, 2003 09:46 AM

witchy, I can hook ya up if you want - with the musical crack, anyway. I've got 2 more copies.

Posted by: tizzie on July 23, 2003 10:04 AM

My cds are going out today. Unfortunately, I butchered one of the covers when I cut it. I'm not sure who got it, but here is a fresh version of the cd cover (which was not designed by me, but one of the other swappers (who was LAZY! and didn't include crop marks ^_^)) if you'd like to replace the butchered one.

Here's the playlist, for those who like that kind of thing:

01 the way we get by - spoon
02 brand new colony - the postal service
03 breathe in - frou frou
04 black heart - calexico
05 ballad of a sin eater - ted leo / pharmacists
06 fela mentality - mixmaster mike & mario caldato jr.
07 kalakuta show - mixmaster mike, lateef & the gift of gab
08 all our base are belong to them - the books
09 savory - jawbox
10 tell me when it's over - the dream syndicate
11 heaven sent - esthero
12 asia no junshin - puffy
13 zero point - the rogers sisters
14 o amor em paz - morelenbaum^2 / sakamoto
15 let's run - le tigre
16 show me - mint royale (with de la soul)
17 my roots are strong and deep - the microphones
18 sweet memory - the tindersticks
19 the likes of you again - flogging molly
20 hola adios - cafe tacvba
21 ??? (super secret song inside)

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 28, 2003 01:23 PM

If I had designed ebk's cd cover - and I'm not saying I did - I would take exception to that remark. I would say, "it's not my fault CERTAIN OTHER 9622 members don't select to print with crop marks."

If I were that designer.

Mine go out today as well. And my cover was also designed by another certain mystery swapster.

Posted by: salmonberry on July 28, 2003 01:45 PM

Did anyone get my cd?

Posted by: kaf on July 28, 2003 01:47 PM

The commish's disc is so fine! First of all, knock me over with the cover. I brought it to work today and the entire graphics department agreed that it is truly professional.

And the tunes aren't bad either (especially Joe Jackson :)

Posted by: tizzie on July 28, 2003 01:53 PM

I've seen the cover that someone designed for salmonberry's cd. It's pretty damned cool. The one that was designed for my cd, however, eh. @_@

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 28, 2003 02:46 PM

and i must agree about yhbc's cd. pretty cool looking. (though i haven't yet given it a spin)

Posted by: eyeballkid on July 28, 2003 02:48 PM

(oh, and i liked your cd tizzzzzzzzzie. you can never have enough paul westerberg, and that world party new radicals song has always been a guilty pleasure.)

Thanks for the sanzzy pen, Uncle Fes! Is that a picture of the interior of your car? Did I miss something, as usual?

Posted by: ana on August 4, 2003 01:53 PM

I did send you my address, salmonberry.

Posted by: jonmc on August 4, 2003 01:55 PM

Nah, that's the interior of one of the cars I wish I had (Audi TT). Seemed appropriate for summer :)

You're welcome on the pen :) I love those pens. I carry around a couple all the time. They have great heft and write nicely.

Why not join in and say something too?
