I got some pictures developed the other day. It turned out to be an old roll of film from last summer. Amidst these nostalgic photos appeared:

I have no idea what the fuck this is (more inside).
Posted by witchstone at July 23, 2003 10:18 AMBefore it is a picture of a friend in California and after it is this lovely picture of our favorite 9622 couple at a show in Central Park about a week later:

I am baffled.
Posted by: witchstone on July 23, 2003 10:20 AMIs it on your negatives as well? Maybe you just got an extra photo.
Either that or Satan is stalking you.
Posted by: ColdChef on July 23, 2003 10:37 AMGood thinking. I'll check the negatives when I get them (you receive the pictures online first). Maybe it's like The Ring. If you see the scary witch picture you die within 7 days. Now I've involved all of you in my curse.
Posted by: witchstone on July 23, 2003 10:41 AMIn this episode of 9622, witchstone denies her cosplay past.
Posted by: jpoulos on July 23, 2003 10:59 AMAlso, if you're having any trouble with your coworkers, just imagine them dressed as Sailor Moon. It passes the day nicely.
Posted by: kaf on July 23, 2003 11:13 AMThat was me dressed as my alter-ego. I'm sorry. I don't mean to alarm.
*twitch*
*spasm*
trip out.
kind of reminds me of the monster thing in Spirited Away. Except dressed in red. With white dreadlocks.
Posted by: phil on July 23, 2003 11:35 AMThe scary thing is, I can't even tell which direction it's walking.
Maybe it's an omen, witchy. Telling you that these are the sort of people you can look forward to meeting in San Diego.
Posted by: readymade on July 23, 2003 11:38 AMFreshly dead Afro-Cuban sensation Celia Cruz never pops up in my B Roll.
Witchy gets all the cool shit.
Posted by: dong_resin on July 23, 2003 11:53 AMhey phil, how fortuitous that you appeared in this thread as there is also a picture of us on the roll. i'll send it to you forthwith.
Posted by: witchstone on July 23, 2003 12:10 PMLooks like a red-witch in meltdown, it looks too that the feet and head don't match, like the torso is twisted 180. But you can see the bend in the elbows to know only the face is backwards.
Posted by: Thomcatspike on July 23, 2003 01:53 PMHey, that's me and k!**
*runs off to work again*
**there may be more pictures this coming Saturday as well, at the Boss concert
Posted by: adampsyche on July 23, 2003 03:45 PMI don't know why, but I think that photo is extremely scary.
Posted by: insomnyuk on July 23, 2003 03:54 PMkinda looks like daffy after he swallowed the nitro glycerin and swallowed a lit match while wearing the devil suit. does anyone else remember this?
Posted by: whatnot on July 23, 2003 04:12 PMkinda looks like daffy after he swallowed the nitro glycerin and swallowed a lit match while wearing the devil suit. does anyone else remember this?
Posted by: whatnot on July 23, 2003 04:12 PMHmm, that photo is giving me some ideas for my Halloween costume. Lord knows if I spend Halloween in SF as planned, I'll have a tough time outdoing F. Fucker, Esq.
Posted by: salmonberry on July 23, 2003 04:13 PMWait a sec!
Witchstone, you could sell that pic on eBay! "The Haunted Photo!"
--Since this photo has come into my possession, my blender turns to the frappe setting all by itself, when I only want to liquefy. Plastic Fisher-Price letters on my fridge rearranged themselves to spell out demonic instructions.
This is not a joke! Do not buy this photo for a large, large sum of money because YOU WILL DIE!
kinda looks like daffy Remember too the cartoon, but when did daffy go old-timer reggae.
Posted by: Thomcatspike on July 23, 2003 06:19 PMTime to start another urban legend, I see. Its clearly the mysterious Ho-bum of the East-river, after a fresh kill. Duh!
Posted by: quixoticlife on July 23, 2003 10:02 PMA dern fine lookin' couple that is below, if I do say so m'self!
Posted by: quixoticlife on July 23, 2003 10:08 PMThat's the only photo witchstone took at the burning man! What a festival, huh?
Still can't seem to recall being there?
BoooHa!
Definitely a slip up at the 1hr. photo....
still,.... one can't help wondering!
Posted by: alicesshoe on July 23, 2003 11:04 PMWitchy, when are you actually *going* to CA? I thought it was in July?...
[Insert Led Zep joke here]
Posted by: roe/metrocake on July 24, 2003 01:22 AMRoe: Originally I was going to be leaving this month, but then with the surgery and the whole "poor" thing, I decided to stay and work a bit longer. I'm now leaving August 9.
Adam, great link. "Their dumbness killed them." Oh, if only it were always that easy to get rid of peeps!
Posted by: witchstone on July 24, 2003 09:13 AMOh. My. God. I did go to high school in Maryland. In fact, I was there last weekend--just a few days before receiving the pictures!
Posted by: witchstone on July 24, 2003 11:20 AMIt's nice to see peep film satire brought to such dizzying heights of technical artistry.
Posted by: kaf on July 24, 2003 11:57 AMThat picture of Bob Dylan on the front page of Salon today - is that meant to echo a classical painting?
It reminds me of somethng, but I can't remember what.
9622.net: It reminds me of somethng, but I can't remember what.
Also, so has witchy put us all on the express lane to hell now with this pic viewing? I'm confused...
Posted by: Cyrano on July 24, 2003 01:26 PMTo me, it seems reminiscent of a Rembrandt self-portrait (like the 1959 one), but I could be mad.
Posted by: witchstone on July 24, 2003 01:27 PMyeah, the golds and reds are reminding me of Rembrandt, but I can't find the original.
Posted by: whatnot on July 24, 2003 01:32 PMI don't think you're mad. I thought it was somebody Dutch.
Posted by: tizzie on July 24, 2003 01:33 PMIf it's haunted like a 1959 Rembrandt, I'm truly terrified.
It also looks like a John Wayne Gacy special. Very, very scary indeed.
Posted by: readymade on July 24, 2003 01:37 PMHow's that leg/hand of yours, anyway? Are you all put back together good and proper?
Posted by: readymade on July 24, 2003 01:45 PMThe one from the movie is a lot scarier, readymade. How about those shoulder bones?
Posted by: tizzie on July 24, 2003 01:46 PMHand is mostly healed and functional, except it sometimes grabs my neck and tries to strangle me at inopportune moments.
Foot is healing very slowly. I graduated from the massive boot/removable cast thingey to a surgical shoe, which just means that it's easier for people to step on. I'm hoping for the sneaker upgrade soon.
Posted by: witchstone on July 24, 2003 01:55 PMI think the real question is: how are the new boobs doing?
Posted by: Cyrano on July 24, 2003 02:23 PMPlease give your answer in the form of a picture. *wink*
Posted by: tizzie on July 24, 2003 03:07 PMFashion consultation folks:
I recived a small monetary gift from my Nonna last night, and today my sneakers quit on me. Looks like part of the gift is going towards new footwear. So plain black chucks are my usual. I'm contemplating getting ones with hot rod style flames kicking up the side, or should I just accept the fact that I'm over thirty and forgo chucks entirely?
You decide.
Posted by: jonmc on July 24, 2003 03:25 PMAs someone your age currently wearing flat black chucks and who has a pair of flame-licked ones in my closet that I wear mostly to gigs and other places where I'm really trying to bring the indie mack, I'd say:
Two words. Kenneth Cole.
Posted by: Chico on July 24, 2003 03:38 PMBut I don't wanna blow the whole gift..and I do work in a casual office, so it's gonna be tennis shoes of some sort...
Posted by: jonmc on July 24, 2003 03:39 PMKenneth Fucking Cole.
(or some mad Sketcher knockoffs)
Posted by: ColdChef on July 24, 2003 04:03 PMNAME: Big Apple

sporty sneaker
Athleisure leather lace up sneaker with stitching detail, textured rubber toe, leather lining and rubber sole.
Kenneth Cole with jeans added flannel, you’re sure to get in a club swanky bar than in sneakers. Plus sneakers do no good when kicking the fuck out of Kenneth.
Posted by: Thomcatspike on July 24, 2003 04:09 PMI was just at the Kenneth Cole site. Waaaay outta my price range. Tryin' a keep this below $50. Plus that looks suspiciously golfy.
Posted by: jonmc on July 24, 2003 04:10 PMI concur. Kenneth Cole is all kinds of good.
In a pinch recently I bought a pair of Skechers that didn't say Skechers all over them.
Posted by: kaf on July 24, 2003 04:15 PMjon buy your expensive shoes at Norstrums then when they are about worn out return them or trade them in for a new pair, some people do. Did it with a pair I wore brand new out of the box to break them in before gaduation, yet breaking them on a sea-jetty is not something I would encourage.
Posted by: Thomcatspike on July 24, 2003 04:19 PMWe don't have Nordstrom's in NY, thom. And Nonna only gave me $100, most of which I planned to spend on beer.
Keds, perhaps?
Posted by: jonmc on July 24, 2003 04:23 PMI guess thongs are out then, too. (Golfy. Nice word.)
I was kind of kidding, but only kind of. (I have, like, eight pairs of shoes, including two pair each of K.Cole and C.Taylor. I feel so... sexually confused all of a sudden.)
You know, at Payless, the shoes are basically disposable, but that's also reflected in the price. So hey.
(And you can always get a pair o' Docs for 50 bucks on Canal Street. Also, check the weekend flea markets. They always got cool cheap crap.)
Posted by: Chico on July 24, 2003 04:23 PMMy main rule in sneakers is that I want as much black as possible (none more black) and as little white as possible. Without looking surpremely dorky. It's surprisingly difficult to match these criteria, especially in women's shoes. They seem to think all women are into pastels and neon colors. My current sneaks are Skechers. Black with shiny silver, rather like a pair of badass rollerskates. I quite fancy them.
Hey, if you like the Chucks, stick with the Chucks. I like them, but they have no arch support and it felt like every stone in the road was pushing into my foot when I used to wear them back in high school.
Posted by: witchstone on July 24, 2003 04:27 PM...but yeah, the only real sneakers I have, besides tennis shoes, are Adidas Sambas.

(OK so I stole bandwidth)
Posted by: kaf on July 24, 2003 04:27 PMHey, if you like the Chucks, stick with the Chucks.
Hello, I'm jon, I fear change.
I actually figure if I dress this way long enough, there'll be a 90's revival or something and for a brief moment I'll be fashionable again.
I have a feeling it'll be chucks after all..
Posted by: jonmc on July 24, 2003 04:30 PMHmm, I thought for sure we'd have the answer to what the picture is by now. I mean, taking into account the massive audience we reach here at 9622, you'd think someone involved with this photo would have piped up by now.
I lie in wait, trembling.
Posted by: witchstone on July 24, 2003 04:35 PM you'd think someone involved with this photo would have piped up by now.
You mean piked, it's a head on something.
Our audience is huge. Everywhere you look, people are talking about that clever web site, you know, the one that's all about coffee and shit.
Oh, wait. That's dong's blog.
Posted by: tizzie on July 24, 2003 07:23 PMI'd just like to point out that it's officially after midnight in Portugal and therefore...
Miguel's Birthday.
If I FedEx a cocktail will the cubes melt?
Posted by: ColdChef on July 24, 2003 10:50 PMI have a pair of Chucks with the hot-rod flame on the side. I also am a big fan of indoor soccer shoes, like the Sambas kaf is shilling above.
You can't go wrong with adidas. As wise men once said....
Now
me and my Adidas do the illest things
we like to stomp out pimps with diamond rings
we slay all suckers who perpetrate
and lay down law from state to state
we travel on gravel, drit road or street
I wear my Adidas when I rock the beat
on stage front page every show I go
it's Adidas on my feet high top or low
My Adidas..
My Adidas..
Doctor Marten's
Doctor Marten's
Doctor Marten's boots!

Posted by: kaf on July 25, 2003 12:58 AMJon, I'm with you on the Chucks. I've got my black ones on today, and last time I was a the mall, I saw a new plaid pair I'm now coveting.
Posted by: aine42 on July 25, 2003 04:50 PMI'm scared of that picture.
Jonmc, there are a lot of new shoes on ebay.
Posted by: lilbunnyhead on July 26, 2003 12:55 AMMy beloved and ageless-despite-constant-hard-wear-for-over-a-year Doctor Marten's 8761s have to be recommended here.

Them's some groovy hooves.
in sync, we fight crime
the Batboots and I, that is
mostly by drinking joe
jonmc, I say get the red pumps and shut 'em all up.
Who'll dare say they don't go with plaid?
Posted by: alicesshoe on July 28, 2003 01:32 AMin sync, we fight crime
You just know that's a cartoon show concept in development at Disney right now.
Posted by: Chico on July 28, 2003 10:59 AM...for which the pilot episode is entitled "drinking Joe".
Posted by: dong_resin on July 28, 2003 05:49 PMLatest update: I got the pictures in the mail and to my horror, the freaky one atop this thread was contained in my negatives.
After much straining of my mental faculties, narrowing the time frame down to August, and the appearance of another picture with weird costumes that was too dark to show up online, I remembered that I'd gone with a friend to this park in Brooklyn where they were having a Panama Festival. So, the costumes were slightly less weird in context but not really. The guys dressed up would go around slapping each other on the legs with sticks.
I just thought you might be relieved that the mystery was solved.
