September 18, 2003 : DUDS AND STUFF

All the fashion-conscious monkeys shop there
.

People have said these things about that :

They have nice women's stuff too.

Posted by: cowboy_sally on September 18, 2003 01:21 PM

I've never purchased a whole suit before.

I did once buy a jacket at Jay-See Pennais, though. (They're French)

Posted by: Crash on September 18, 2003 01:28 PM

Everybody gets their jackets at JC Penneys! OK, not everyone is psychologically prepared for Brooks Brothers right off the bat (sorta like learning how to deal with a sommelier). Try Men's Wearhouse. Good quality, good prices, low snootiness. They will cut the off-the-rack stuff to fit you (it makes a HUGE difference, trust me). It's a great place to load up on those basics I mentioned in the previous thread.

What Miss Tizzie wears to knock 'em dead.

Posted by: tizzie on September 18, 2003 01:34 PM

Cowboy_Sally, that hat looks good on you, grrrl!

Posted by: tizzie on September 18, 2003 01:35 PM

I miss my Brooks Brothers stuff... back when I had a career. The first time I went into one was a bit intimidating.

Posted by: tj on September 18, 2003 01:39 PM

Also: when you go to Men's Wearhouse, make sure when they measure you to write down your sizes. Most men have no idea what sizes they are in these things. If you're an easy size, you can go to Penney's or Famous or wherever and nail some good stuff without having to go through all the ringamarole. I *know* I'm a dead-solid 16/34 dress shirt, so I can go anywhere, open wide, and scoop.

Also: it always helps to have a general idea of what you need. Prioritize. Have a white dress shirt? Look for a blue one. Have gray trousers? Look for blue or olive. Have a floral tie? Look for a striped. Knowing that sort of thing ahead of time lessens the chance of the occurrence of you standing in front of a giant stack of clothes and not having any idea what you should get. At which point you remember there's a boxing match on later, and you leave with nothing. It may sound stupid, but I make a mental list of the things I want next. I get a few free bucks, I already know what I want.

I walked into Brooks Bros. once. They said, "Deliveries in the back, mister."

Posted by: jonmc on September 18, 2003 02:12 PM

Apparently, it's hard to cheat a monkey.

Posted by: adampsyche on September 18, 2003 02:13 PM

That's why I don't go into Brooks Brothers.

zing!

Posted by: Vidiot on September 18, 2003 03:03 PM

The only suit I've ever bought that fit off the rack. Lucky for me being in Dallas and wearing a size 37/38 short have trouble finding them so don't wear them that much...

Posted by: thomcatspike on September 18, 2003 03:10 PM

I had to buy a new suit recently. My old one didn't fit after the dropping of 50 pounds, and I had two weddings to attend this summer.

I absolutely hate wearing it, especially in Texas heat. It's nice though. Black Sharkskin, I think. And I do look fucking smashing in it.

If I had my way, I'd wear shorts and a t-shirt every day.

Posted by: ufez on September 18, 2003 03:49 PM

A little story: My husband was the best man at a super chichi wedding, and was getting a designer tux fitted for him (the groom was paying, even though my husband thought he was insane).

He went in for the fitting, they measured him, he left. Two weeks before the wedding, he went in for the final fitting, when he actually tries the thing on and they do last minute adjustments. The jacket fits perfectly, but the pants...he's swimming in the pants! The waist fits, but the legs balloon out and make him look like MC Hammer. He flags the woman down and says, "I don't think these fit me right."

She looks at him, and says, "Oh. Those aren't your pants, those are Arnold's," goes to the rack and hands him the correct pair.

That's right. My husband got into Ah-nold's pants. How many people can say that? Except Ms. Shriver, of course.

Posted by: readymade on September 18, 2003 04:01 PM

Based on that interview with Oui magazine, I'd advise your friend to get tested for STDs. Ah-nold gets around.

Posted by: Crash on September 18, 2003 04:06 PM

Husband, friend, whatevah.

Posted by: Crash on September 18, 2003 04:06 PM

I was an usher at my sister's wedding, so I wore a tux for the first time in my life. It was a plain old fashioned black one with a bow tie. With my height and complexion, I looked like Lurch.

Posted by: jonmc on September 18, 2003 04:10 PM

I happen to think Lurch is quite fetching!

Posted by: readymade on September 18, 2003 04:11 PM

Posted by: jonmc on September 18, 2003 04:16 PM

monkeys and fashion don't always mix. just be careful.

Posted by: phil on September 18, 2003 04:45 PM

Speaking of tuxes, I had to wear one when i was in the Young Catholic Musicians. Late 80's, early 90's, we still had to wear black pants, white dinner jacket, and fucking RUFFLES!

Posted by: notsnot on September 18, 2003 04:48 PM

They gave you potato chips with your tux?

Cool deal, man.

Posted by: jonmc on September 18, 2003 04:50 PM

It makes sense, since Ruffles are good with dips.

*rim shot*

Posted by: Crash on September 18, 2003 06:07 PM

I've lurched enough. I'm ready for my first 9622 comment.

I know an older gentleman who took a Brooks Brother blazer to one of the stores to get it relined. He bought the jacket 25 years previously and they relined his jacket at no cost.

That's service.

I recommend Brooks Brothers highly.

Posted by: Valerie on September 18, 2003 07:08 PM

Good debut, Valerie! Lurchers always welcome here.

Posted by: tizzie on September 18, 2003 08:21 PM

Thank you for the warm welcome, Tizzie.

Posted by: Valerie on September 18, 2003 08:55 PM

Tizzie. I was sorry to read about the loss of your uncle. My father is very involved in AMVETS and he works hard with his group to make sure that all veterans are well cared for and that people understand that you can hate the war but still love the soldiers and appreciate what they are willing to sacrifice to make sure our rights are protected and our homes are safe.

Posted by: Valerie on September 18, 2003 09:06 PM

Jeez Valerie, let someone else talk, would'ya?

Alla' time, yammer, yammer, yammer.

Posted by: yhbc on September 18, 2003 09:16 PM

Welcome Valerie, ignore yhbc... he's off his meds.

Posted by: tj on September 18, 2003 09:36 PM

Welcome to 9622, Valerie.

Glad to have you.

Posted by: kaf on September 18, 2003 09:37 PM

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Posted by: Valerie on September 18, 2003 10:00 PM

Ah, I still fondly remember the frist time I de-lurched.

Good to meet you, Valerie.

Posted by: Cyrano on September 18, 2003 10:47 PM

"first time" duh.

Posted by: Cyrano on September 18, 2003 10:51 PM

Good to meet you too, Cyrano.

Posted by: Valerie on September 18, 2003 10:51 PM

Yup, Fes - we must keep our head amidst these commie punks.

I'm a loyal Brooks Brothers customer - I wear no other shirts, boxers, T-shirts or pajamas. The cotton's soft and fresh and they last for years and years . I always buy Oxfords, either white or, when I'm feeling wicked, light blue.

I love American clothes in general. They're clean, honest, decent and cute. Of course, it helps that I'm the only one round here to wear them...

Posted by: Miguel on September 18, 2003 11:05 PM

I believe Migs and I have discussed BB previously on these pages. A lot of there stuff doesn't appeal to me but there is always something that is just about perfect. I know this sounds silly but wearing Brooks Brothers helps my confidence level. I know, I know, superficial and silly. But true. They have really good muted colors and the clothes are high quality. Classic.
I bought a suit at Men's Warehouse late last winter. It went well and even had some very small old man with an Italian accent measure me. It fits perfectly. The only problem is they really give you the hard sell with regard to all the peripherals. How many times do I have to say that I do not need a pair of suspenders! (Although I secretly do.)

Posted by: ana on September 18, 2003 11:12 PM

Whoa! I didn't even see your post Miguel.

Posted by: ana on September 18, 2003 11:13 PM

Cute?

(and anathema, I will gladly send you a pair of suspenders - I haven't worn them in over a decade) :P

Posted by: yhbc on September 18, 2003 11:14 PM

We part ways at the boxers, Miguel. I need more support as I get older and have moved into space-age synthetic materials. I swear by these. The blue band is a bit obnoxious but they are very comfortable.

Posted by: ana on September 18, 2003 11:19 PM

On a more relevant note, I will say that the best suit I ever bought I bought on our honeymoon in Dublin - it's a basic grey three-piece suit that looks like it should be too hot to wear in the summer but isn't. I paid (if I remember correctly) 100 pounds for it, and it shows no wear even today.

Even better, I can still fit into it, and I bought it in 1990. I should have bought three, then I'd never have to buy another suit.
