September 19, 2003 : Avast Ye Lurkers!!!

Olly olly oxenfree!
Come out come out wherever you are!

We know you're out there, checking in every day--or every week. You've learned our names, our favorite books and movies and drinks. You know our darkest secrets and Jpoulos's most perverse sexual quirks. We know you've been lurking there all along.

Now it's time to make yourself known. Pop in and say hi. For one thread only, we'll waive the humiliating initiation ritual. We won't ask any embarrassing questions, or splatter you with anything...unwholesome. We just want you to make yourselves known.

Let's hear from the lurkers!

Posted by jpoulos at September 19, 2003 10:58 AM

People have said these things about that :

(Of course, all the regulars are welcome here too.)

(Also, just for the record, I think this whole talk-like-a-pirate day is stupid, but I'm trying to be less cynical and play along.)

Posted by: jpoulos on September 19, 2003 11:03 AM

OK. I guess it's time for me to break the silence. Hi everyone!

Posted by: D.B. Cooper on September 19, 2003 11:56 AM

I think we should have an MIA thread too. Find out where all those AWOL people went.

I could also use a shot of Jager if anyone has one handy.

And the ability to shrink to the size of a Micro Machine at will.

*props up a box with a stick*

*ties a string to the stick*

*puts a beer under the box*

*hides*

I'm gonna catch me a lurker!

Posted by: Cyrano on September 19, 2003 12:05 PM

I used to be able to post some, but now I have to lurk, ever since they moved my boss into the next cube. *sob*

Looking busy all the time is a pain in the ass.

And I owe ColdChef a CD. (I may owe others CDs too??)

And now that I've double posted, I guess I need to go back to lurking once more.

Posted by: krimur on September 19, 2003 12:18 PM

OK, who changed the post to "Jpoulos's most perverse sexual quirks"? Why I oghtta...

Posted by: jpoulos on September 19, 2003 12:21 PM

But I thought unwholesome humiliation was the whole point! Monkey poo and beer!

Posted by: towerbrave on September 19, 2003 12:28 PM

oops, sorry about that... too much coffee this morning.

Posted by: towerbrave on September 19, 2003 12:31 PM

Boss-lady is out sick today - so it's a festival of web-related misbehavior, till quitting time.

Posted by: krimur on September 19, 2003 12:33 PM

I am not aware of any post-changing activity, and even if I were aware of any such activity, I would not be at liberty to discuss it. Sir.

Posted by: kaf on September 19, 2003 12:44 PM

The database is being a total asshole today, so double postings are going to be common.

Posted by: jpoulos on September 19, 2003 12:46 PM

At quittin' time, my week off begins. Woo-Hoo!!

Posted by: jonmc on September 19, 2003 12:47 PM

So, you will be off to Brooks Brothers around five-ish then?

Posted by: kaf on September 19, 2003 01:04 PM

Jon, just go down to Century 21 across the street from the trade center site and get yourself some cheap Helmut Lang. They have the CK Tech skivvies there too.

Posted by: ana on September 19, 2003 01:13 PM

I shall be parking myself on a barstool, my good men. Someone has to keep them on the ground in these troubled times.

Posted by: jonmc on September 19, 2003 01:26 PM

I don't lurk here, but I'm a banner MeFi lurker. Does that count? I haven't even bridged the 100 comment mark over there.

I think I should get a gold star!

Well, there's no disguise for that double vision...

Posted by: foriegner on September 19, 2003 01:56 PM

Posted by: peaseblossom on September 19, 2003 01:59 PM

Long time reader first time poster love the new format.

Gotta say: What a right handsome chap up there. Strapping lad. Not too gamey-looking, all told, which I hear is pretty rare.

I might posit that he swabs a mean deck. If you know what I mean.

Posted by: Chico on September 19, 2003 02:06 PM

Posted by: notsnot on September 19, 2003 02:41 PM

I've been trying to get my cubemates to talk like pirates. They say if I don't cut it out, they're gonna make me walk the plank out our 8th floor window.

Arrr.

Posted by: jonmc on September 19, 2003 02:47 PM

"Come on out and introduce yourself." Man, I ain't fallin' for that one, that's the oldest trick in the book. I'm just gonna sit right back and enjoy this beer some sucker fool left under this box. This now rapidly descending box.

Posted by: arto on September 19, 2003 03:01 PM

I've been trying to buck the trend and make today Talk Like a Wino Day.

Posted by: adampsyche on September 19, 2003 03:13 PM

I managed to talk about both pirates AND monkeys in Greek class today. I'm very proud.

*re-lurks*

Posted by: Herbert Herbert on September 19, 2003 03:21 PM

adam, everyday is Talk Like A Wino Day.

Posted by: jonmc on September 19, 2003 03:29 PM

You kids are so cute.

Posted by: mate Thomcatcross&bones on September 19, 2003 04:16 PM

Posted by: ufez on September 19, 2003 04:23 PM

Arr.

And stuff.

Posted by: Dirty Jack Cash on September 19, 2003 04:23 PM

Well blow me down, I un-checked the "remember me".
[Ye goes back to my bung hole]
[before leaving]: Avast...need more Rum and a Beauty.

Posted by: mateThomcatcross&bones on September 19, 2003 04:24 PM

Mr. Catspike is perhaps the greatest of the surrealist pirates.

Or was it Jean Arrrp? Max Arrrnst?

Salvadarrr Dali?

Posted by: kaf on September 19, 2003 04:26 PM

Also, on the piratical wavelength, I think the best pirate humor ever was Monty Python's football match between the gynecologists and the Long John Silver impersonators. Every time I see it I cry with laughter.

Posted by: kaf on September 19, 2003 04:27 PM

Might ye be considerin' a career change, landlubber?

Naw ...never ye was a landlubber til being ship wrecked in ye Dallas. Actually thee rum in me is a talk'in...the rum I wish was in thee me...ya mind if fired me cannon through your porthole?

Posted by: mateThomcatcross&bones on September 19, 2003 04:29 PM

Not if ya talks dirty ta me, first, matey...

Posted by: jonmc on September 19, 2003 04:33 PM

ya mind if fired me cannon through your porthole?

I'm not sure what that means, but it sounds like it would leave a mark.

Posted by: Fes on September 19, 2003 04:35 PM

Piratically speaking, I can't help but feel like a potential victim of the Crimson Permanent Assurance today.

*pulls letter opener from desk, places it in easy reach*

Posted by: Fes on September 19, 2003 04:36 PM

Aye, Black Cat Tommy McSpike might be one of the half-dozen most eloquentest waterlubbers in all the lone starrr state.

But I'll be goin' to Davy Jones' locker this very evenin' before I follow his knave self back to his bung hole.

Unless of course there be rum there, at least enough for him, me, an' Gertrude (me parrot). Then we're talking a whole bung o'fun. Arr.

Posted by: Chico on September 19, 2003 05:05 PM

Lupo is sexually perverted? Wow, miss a day and you miss a lot here.

Crash, let's roast up them lurkers. I'm a bit peckish.

Posted by: tizzie on September 19, 2003 05:06 PM

I hear that pirates enjoy popsicles.

Posted by: krimur on September 19, 2003 05:08 PM

But they don't especially enjoy being chained up (or do they?)

Posted by: krimur on September 19, 2003 05:10 PM

When I was a kid, my favorite dinner was a peculiar variety of teevee dinner called Pirates' Picnic. I don't remember much about it now, except that there were pictures of pirates underneath the apple cobbler.

In some odd way this is associated with a coffee cup my dad had that had a naked lady at the bottom.

I'm all messed up inside. But that was some good cobbler.

Posted by: kaf on September 19, 2003 05:24 PM

1) I came out of hiding yesterday.

2) Our weekly famaily treat, when I was a kid, was Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips on Long Beach Blvd. in Oceanside then Nathan's across the street for the Video Arcade.

Somehow I posted twice. It was an accident. I'm not hungry for attention.

No. Really.

Posted by: V on September 19, 2003 06:07 PM

Salvadarrr Dali?

Ya know, a part of me is going, "boo! hiss!" on this, but most of me is clapping like one of those Queer Eye dudes after seeing Madonna win a lifetime achievement award for something.

Posted by: Cyrano on September 19, 2003 06:13 PM

Remember ye mateys..if ye be singing "take me out to the ball game" tonight...make the last line: drink some rum...in loving memory, Harry Carey.
A vast ye pirates, dead man can still tell tales...hiccup.

Posted by: mateThomcatcross&bones on September 19, 2003 06:49 PM

Hey, readymade -- if you get the gold star for MeFi lurking, I can't wait to see what I get. I've got way fewer posts and comments than you do.

And I'd lurk less, but then I'd be at work forever. (It's already 8pm on a Friday and I'm still here. Clients. Feh. It's too bad they pay the bills so nicely.)

Also, yarrr.

Posted by: aine42 on September 19, 2003 08:55 PM

Yarr!!! Another lurker here. I've got the 9622 RSS feed, even though I don't usually have much to say.

I NEVER kiss on a first keel-hauling.

I hope all the east-coasters handled Isabel okay.

Posted by: britain on September 19, 2003 09:39 PM

I got a GOLD STAR! I'd like to thank the committee for recognizing a great non-performance in the field of MeFi lurking, all of my non-fans, and, of course, the little people.

aine42, does this mean it's going to be an All About Eve thing? Am I going to have to be a jealous and bitter old has-been lurker?

Posted by: readymade on September 19, 2003 10:53 PM

Yo ho ho.......good night.

Posted by: Valerie on September 19, 2003 11:50 PM

yo ho ho....

Do I only get a green star, instead of gold, if I've been drinking Old Crow (and pibb) instead of rum?

Consolation prize- somebody "borrowed" my drink, and refilled it with rum'n'coke instead of the usual. So it was refreshed with Pibb and Crow.

PUI, can you tell?

Posted by: notsnot on September 20, 2003 01:44 AM

Haven't you gotten the e-memo from the Ceneral Server?
Monkeys are out.
Lemurs are in.

PUI = Posting Under the Influence

Also known as Drunk Surfing.

Posted by: notsnot on September 20, 2003 11:46 AM

I'm not a lurker or a plank-walker; I'm just blocked from posting at work.

And there are quite a few lurkers around here, aren't there?

Posted by: yhbc on September 20, 2003 12:57 PM

When are you going to make partner and make 9622 required for the associates?

Posted by: ana on September 20, 2003 03:36 PM

Re-lurking.

Posted by: mikro on September 23, 2003 09:38 AM

The Autumn 9622 Swap is slated for just before Thanksgiving. Probably start around Halloween or so...?

Infernal forces are marshalling against jon for his negligence. You think that toothache just happened? Bwahahahahahahah!

Posted by: Swapinistratator on September 23, 2003 10:20 AM

It's not me, I was never here. You didn't see me, see?

Posted by: Dejah420 on September 25, 2003 11:50 AM
Why not join in and say something too?

A note about posting images:

We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found here. Thanks.

In an effort to help eliminate spam (and to preserve the sanity of the 9622 Volunteer Simian Spam-Cop Brigade) all threads older than 30 days will now be closed to comments.
