Lookit that hip li'l monkey with the ironic t-shirt. Let's give a big sal-ooooot to a man ahead of his time.
Happy Birthday, Uncle Fes! ::mwah!::
(cocktail napkin shoutouts forthcoming)
Posted by dana at October 09, 2003 09:17 AMHappy birthday, Fes....and here's hoping you get a napkin shoutout, you lucky man you.
Posted by: Vidiot on October 9, 2003 09:35 AMNapkin shoutout, hell. Let's all shave our heads and stick light bulbs in our mouths, in honor of the man, the myth, the legend, and one of my first buddies on the blue.
Happy Birthday, Uncle Fes!!
Posted by: jonmc on October 9, 2003 09:58 AMHow conveeeenient - Fes, Ufez and I are meeting up tomorrow afternoon! For his present, I'll replace the half-pack of smokes I bummed off 'im....
Happy Birhtday!
Posted by: notsnot on October 9, 2003 10:05 AMBoddhisatva Fes
Seek always enlightenment,
Suits, and finest Scotch.
Heh. That kid looks in charge.
Happy birthday, Fes.
A great, epoch-making birthday to you, dear Uncle Fes!
Thanks for a year of great, unrepeatable and inimitable prose, full of thought, fun and the best kind of idiossincracy. I single out your autobiographical accounts as among the best I've ever read, always well-paced, honest and richly stocked with detail, culminating in wise, often hilarious punchlines. I salute your political courage and nous. In sum, (Mmm...dim sum...) I bow to your philosophy of life.
This is one of the times I wish all this camaraderie could be translated into life and flesh could meet flesh in a pleasantly drunken embrace, after a deliciously heavy meal involving porterhouse steaks and much cognac-sipping.
Maybe next year!
I raise my glasses to you, till midnight strikes. Fondest wishes go out to all who share their lives with you.
Here is my present. It's a little lacking in design finesse but, like vintage port, it's full of promise and I hope you'll enjoy it, you young devil!
:)
Posted by: Miguel on October 9, 2003 12:12 PMDon't look now, but I think he started partying without us.
Happy birthday, dearest Fes! This girl is crazy about a sharp-dressed man!
Posted by: tizzie on October 9, 2003 12:40 PMHmm. Judging by the paucity of cocktail napkin shoutouts so far, I'm guessing y'all are assuming that I'm the one providing 'em! What, you think I'm at the bar at 10:30 am? (Don't answer that.)
In the meantime, fes, I offer you Sport Meiden! Dutch female tennis players+nudity=BIRTHDAY FUN.
Posted by: cowboy_sally on October 9, 2003 12:46 PMIt's really a dilemma, c_s. I have been sitting here at the office for about an hour thinking, "Who can I get to take a picture of the Fes tattoo on my butt?"
And nobody springs to mind!
Posted by: tizzie on October 9, 2003 12:55 PMHaha, Tizzie! Who knows if in a few years' time we won't be earnestly debating how the hell we can remove our Fes tattoos from our butts?
Posted by: Miguel on October 9, 2003 01:01 PMWe know you do, Jon. And I have the pictures to prove it.
(Sadly, I can erase them from the flashcard, but not from my brain.)
Posted by: Vidiot on October 9, 2003 01:24 PMI'd do some now, but someone could lose an eye. not to mention their lunch.
Posted by: jonmc on October 9, 2003 01:26 PMHappy Birthday, Fes!
btw, I had no idea you were a Luomo fan. Let me know if you want a copy of there latest, The Present Lover. Somehow I got ForceTracks to send me a copy at the beginning of the summer. It's not out here yet and I have seen imports of it around $30.
Posted by: ana on October 9, 2003 02:59 PMRight on, Fes. First round's on me tomorrow.
notsnot, I got your message, I think it's all good. See you tomorrow.
Posted by: ufez on October 9, 2003 07:11 PMHappy Birthday, Fes! Best regards to ufez and notsnot as well - have fun!
Posted by: yhbc on October 9, 2003 09:37 PMRight. Ufez & notsnot, I am looking to you two for memorable birthday booze up shoutouts.
Preferably involving a martini shaker, a marmoset, and a rather large ball of twine. Grommets are optional.
Auguri, oh Smooth Talking One.
Posted by: romakimmy on October 9, 2003 10:56 PMWhat is this, a scavenger hunt?
The twine and martini shaker are findable. The grommets, well, I'm not sure exactly *what* happened to that toolbox. And as for the marmoset, can i just paint my face? The local monkey-renting company's kinda pricey right now, what with West Nile and all.
Posted by: notsnot on October 9, 2003 11:09 PMWhat is this, a scavenger hunt?
Nah, I just figured those items would be easier to explain to Missus Fes than some toast and oodles of hentai.
Collective noun tangent: pride of lions. murder of crows. oodles of hentai. Fits, no?
Posted by: romakimmy on October 9, 2003 11:27 PMThank you, everyone, for your well-wishes on this, my 36th. As now the clock nears the end of the day, my little ones are asleep, my neck bare, my feet unshod, a heavy glass of Cutty in my hand (my grandfather's drink, a man whose name I carry), the woods quiet outside my open window, I am reminded of Shakespeare: "I count myself in nothing else so happy | As in a soul rememb'ring my good friends." The Bard always says it better than anyone.
It is a continuing honor for me to venture forth in the pleasant arrogance that I number amongst your peers. Thank you for that, and thank you all for brightening my birthday.
Finally, thundersluts may send celebratory post-Pilates birthday panties to my WORK address, not home. WORK. Please remember that. Thank you in advance.

Genius, romakimmy!
Posted by: Miguel on October 9, 2003 11:43 PMHeya, Miguel :)
I'm gonna take you up on those porterhouses and cognac in this life, Miguel, mark my words.
Posted by: Fes on October 10, 2003 12:17 AMalso: ana - damn right I want a copy! whaddya take in trade? you know how I got turned on to them? Your mix, man. I was coming back from a boys Friday night out, had it in the deck. It's late and I live in the sticks, fog's out, rain slicked streets. I got the speakers up, and the mix on shuffle when CLICK up comes Talk In Danger. What a great song, I felt like I was a sedan-sized shell shot out of a gun. I owe you for that.
Speaking of, Autumn Swap begins in three weeks! Start planning your master disks now.
Posted by: Fes on October 10, 2003 01:07 AMSorry for the tardiness, Happy Birthday Uncle Fes. Hope your brithday was all you wished for...cheers!
Posted by: Thomcatspike on October 10, 2003 12:17 PMThank you, gents. You can't imagine the physical and psychological changes! Yesterday? Youthful, virile, at ease in the world. Today? Up at 5 a.m., I kept a ball that went in my yard, voted against a school bond, drove 40 in a 65, and made plans for dinner at Shoney's at 4-ish.
I don't need to tell you how high my pants are hiked up today, now do I? Think nipples.
Posted by: Fes on October 10, 2003 01:30 PMAch, it's a tit bit nipply in here, but it's getting hooter.
Posted by: jonmc on October 10, 2003 02:39 PMLook at me, late as fuck.
I hope you somehow managed to still have a somewhat decent birthday without my totally uninspired birthday sentiments which are:
Happy Birthday.
May your hangover be slight and/or brief.
Posted by: brittney on October 10, 2003 03:25 PMI don't know you FES but for what it's worth you were an absolutely adorable child. (That is you above, right?)
Happy Birthday for now and forever, ever and ever.
Posted by: Valerie on October 10, 2003 11:00 PMThat's me all right. 1978. 25 years! Just a bit more than a quarter of a lifetime ago. Thank you, Valerie. And thanks, Brittney - better late than never, I say. Your way, my birthday lasts the whole week :)
Had beers with ufez and his lovely girlfriend Denise tonight! Not sure when shoutouts will be posted, we had to shoot flat stock, but notsnot has the camera. There will be photos.
Posted by: Fes on October 10, 2003 11:30 PMI wound up staying out til 3:30 that night, Fes. The drive to Tulsa the next day was long and painful. Thanks again, though! Looking forward to the pics.
Posted by: ufez on October 13, 2003 12:05 PMhappy birthday dear fester!
p.s. help me, i'm trapped in a state with arnold as its governor!
Posted by: witchstone on October 19, 2003 07:23 PMPataki and Bloomberg are looking better and better, eh Witchy?
