People have said these things about that :

Wow, that's one hell of an estrogen highball, Fes! Are you secretly, like me, not very fond at all of male voices, unless they're completely wasted (Dylan, Cohen, Young, Waits)?

Talk about good taste! As far as I can tell, only a dash of Laura Nyro is missing. :)

Posted by: Miguel on November 11, 2003 10:15 AM

I've always liked female singers. It's not that I don't enjoy male voices - my Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull collections are nearly exhaustive - but there is something about a woman singing that has a transcendant quality. One can imagine that she is singing to you, an angel wreathed in pale light reaching down to we mud-caked apes, as we hew our wood and draw our water, to show us a glimpse of a paradise we can never attain and only dimly see.

Beauty and the Beast, I suppose :)

*returns to the woods, axe over one shoulder*

Posted by: Fes on November 11, 2003 10:38 AM

Fantastic mix, UncaFess. It's always bothered me that too many mixes (mine included especially) leave the women short-changed.

Posted by: jpoulos on November 11, 2003 10:38 AM

I debated, also, adding a second disk to this swap, so many songs I had to cull. Vitamin C, Shemekia Copeland, Ani DiFranco, Neko Case, The Raveonettes, Detroit Cobras, Vanessa Paradis, Rhiannon Giddens, your Laura Nyro, Kate Bush... saving 'em for the Winter Swap, I guess :D

You want one, Lup?

Posted by: Fes on November 11, 2003 10:45 AM

I've got at least three female fronted bands represented on the mix. Considering that there are a couple of instrumental tracks, it ain't a bad ratio. Probably indicative of my listening habits.

Is everyone posting track lists? My discs should go out Thursday.

Posted by: ufez on November 11, 2003 10:48 AM

Track list posting is up to the mixer. In the past, people have posted their lists, allowing others from outside their swap group to see and, occasionally, request disks. It is, of course, purely voluntary.

Posted by: Fes on November 11, 2003 10:50 AM

Yeah, I just didn't know if everyone was going to wait until those within the group had received their's or not. I haven't swapped in a year, so forgive me if I'm a bit rusty.

Posted by: ufez on November 11, 2003 11:15 AM

Femal singers do know how to hit you just in the right place. It may sound strange, but along with Dylan and Pete Townshend, the rock star I related to most growing up was Janis Joplin. Her combo package of toughness covering up aching vulnerability really spoke to me as a teenager.

Posted by: jonmc on November 11, 2003 11:16 AM

Can I just say that I *heart* UncleFes??
Forever your girl!

And I had a Laura Nyro/Labelle tune on my last disc.

Posted by: tizzie on November 11, 2003 11:34 AM

And very good tunes, Fes, dear. My own opinion of Joan Osborne went way up after "Standing in the Shadow of Motown" - she was excellent.

Posted by: tizzie on November 11, 2003 11:42 AM

Allright, sod it all. Vidiot, Valerie, Brittney, Fesster, if you don't want to know, scroll down real quick. Here's my track list...

*backs slowly out of Swap group*

Posted by: Fes on November 11, 2003 12:16 PM

Kidding! That looks like a fantastic mix, lots of bands I've never heard. I look forward to listening to it.

also: thanks Tizzie *blush* I'd post for you anytime.

Posted by: Fes on November 11, 2003 12:19 PM

I tried to make it somewhat diverse, Fes, so that even if there a couple of songs you don't like, hopefully there will be some you do. More than anything, it's a mix for myself of some of my current favorite songs and some old lovers revisited. And all things considered, it's fairly mellow for me.

Why has this place seemed like an echo chamber lately?

Posted by: ufez on November 11, 2003 01:16 PM

Finished burning all the disks for "side one" last night. Tonight all the "side two" disks are on the agenda.

Now, to make origami double-cd covers.

Posted by: Crash on November 11, 2003 02:04 PM

origami? *nods approval*

You know, it has been a little quiet round here lately - lots of normally extroverted people keeping to themselves. Autumn malaise, perhaps. The leaves not quite a bright as we'd hoped, the sky a bit grayer than in our dreams, the work infinitesimally more difficult and less rewarding, the miles between us stretching out like spidersilk, to infinity...

Not wanting to have to follow a Fes Poetic Post™...

I kid because I love.

Who doesn't enjoy my purple prose? WHO??

Posted by: Fes on November 11, 2003 02:53 PM

I fear that my swap discs will be delayed one day. I'm burning at the moment, but I won't be able to send them out until Saturday. I just got really backed up this week (damn you Las Vegas!)

So, you gonna post a complete MeFiVegas report?

My track list is delayed, alas. I had a master, I swear! But upon listening, I decided that the track order needed some tweaking. But it's good stuff. (And not nearly as edgy/hip/with-it as my compadres, alas.)

Posted by: Vidiot on November 11, 2003 03:26 PM

I suppose there will be pictures eventually. I just have to get down to the drug store and get them developed. My wife had the fancy shmancy digital camera in Seattle.

Pink Frost!?!? Such a good track. Nice work, ebk.

Posted by: ana on November 11, 2003 05:21 PM

Autumn malaise, perhaps.

It's totally snowing here.

Posted by: ana on November 11, 2003 05:23 PM

It's totally 80 degrees here. But it was in the 50's for highs last week. And will be again by the weekend.

Posted by: ufez on November 11, 2003 06:13 PM

Pink Frost!?!? Such a good track. Nice work, ebk.

The first time I heard Interpol, I was desperately trying to remember what song most of their album sounds like (along with the obvious Smiths, Joy Division influences). Then, one day, "Pink Frost" came up in my Winamp playlist and it all clicked.

De-evolution (disc 1) On the driving side

1. Magoo Opening—Cornelius
Just a little intro by the famous Japanese ape aficianado. A little manic, but it does have a Planet of the Apes sample.
2. House of Jealous Lovers—The Rapture
The soon to be huge The Rapture comes out of the gate with a high-powered combo of Gang of Four, Jesus Lizard, and Television. How can you go wrong with a song driven by call-and-response, hand claps, and cowbells?
3.Lose Yourself—Eminem
Guilty pleasure. The only good thing about 8 Mile was the battle scenes. Horrible portrayal of women and way too many shots of Eminem staring off into space looking pensive. A tell-tale sign of bad acting. Perfect iTunes single.
4. Bib—Mouse on Mars
I am compelled to include at least one track out of Cologne.
5. Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough—Michael Jackson
This is in no way an ironic gesture. Off The Wall is a fantastic record. Michael’s songwriting combined with the Quincy Jones orchestration is pure magic.
6. RattlesnakesLloyd Cole and the Commotions
Killer song from a late `80s favorite. Nice guitar, tasteful orchestration, and an On the Waterfront reference in the chorus.
7. Electrologe—Troublemakers
Smokin’ low-end steady funk from France.
8. Are ‘Friends’ Electric?—Tubeway Army
Well, way more than Cars, this is Gary Numan at his prime. Lots of guitar and machines! So influenced by Burroughs and Philip K. Dick it’s scary.
9. Mucho Chupar—David Axelrod
Brilliant `70s producer recently rediscovered by the hipsters and beat merchants.
10. Purple Haze—Groove Armada*
This is such a mediocre song, so no cites. It’s just good to drive to.
*anathema, it’s parent and subsidiaries, in no way condones the behavior discussed in this song. Further, by playing this CD you hereby agree to hold harmless anathema, it’s parent and subsidiaries for any damages incurred by you, the listener, through behavior by you related to the views expressed in this song. Moreover, you agree to indemnify anathema, it’s parent and subsidiaries for any damages to third parties related to your public performance of this CD.
11. Lella Rani Ensaaf El Mektoub—Cheb Mami
A record collection without Rai is no record collection at all.
12. Animal Chin—Jaga Jazzist
Completely out there Norwegian sounds. Just put on the damn headphones!
13. Losing My Edge—LCD Soundsystem
The Williamsburg theme song, 2002-2003. I was considering making a mix that included cuts from every band mentioned in this song. You know there’s something wrong with you when you can actually do that.
13. Untitled (Track 1 E.P.)—Cherry
Another Brooklyn pop hit, summer 2003.
14. Ziggurat, Plain Gold Ring—DJ Rupture
Wasn’t sure about going out like this. Very dark, but I think it works. Nina never fails me.

De-evolution (disc 2) On the mellow side

1. Salud—Rjd2
One of the few to do something original on the decks.
2. Intro—The Isolationist
3. The Many and The Few—Matthew Herbert
4. Rondell Zwei—Pole
Micro-dub from Germany.
5. Binoculars—savath+savalas
My favorite of the many Scott Herren projects.
6. Fast Train—Solomon Burke
7. 1985—Tarwater
More Teutonic tunes, this time with an acoustic guitar!
8. Pacific Theme—Broken Social Scene
One of my new favorites.
9. Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl—Broken Social Scene
10. [Untitled]—Vladislav Delay
I’m a huge fan of all of Delay’s projects. This is just a little ambient interlude.
11. Hot—Boo-Bonic, Clipse, Pusha T, Roscoe P. Coldchain
& The Neptunes
Producers du jour, The Neptunes lay it down slow and low.
12. Smoke and Mirrors—Rjd2
13. Who In The Funk—Soul Center
Another German (Thomas Brinkmann), another incarnation. Repetitive, hypnotizing, infective.
14. Les Nuits—Nightmares On Wax
Painless lounge music with bass.
15. Silver Plane—Felt
One of my favorite `80s bands. Comes with the “Miguel Seal Of Approval.”
16. Outro—The Isolationist

Shit. I left out a track on disc 1. #2 is Cruiser's Creek by The Fall. I left it off the inserts too, so those who cloak themselves in nothingness will have to deal with it. Everything else is on the disc, it's just misnumbered by one.

In the 9622 tradition of talking about music and booze, who read this article in the NYT about digestifs? Intriguing! makes me want to go taste test the afternoon away....

Miguel? Are you free?

Posted by: tizzie on November 12, 2003 11:13 AM

Wheeee! I exist again! :)

I did too, Tizzie. I found it very sad that there were so few restaurants in the U.S. where people could linger over their cognacs, chatting away - it's the best part of the meal. Sometimes, if more than two hours pass, we order new desserts or some more cheese. And drink a lot of espressos. It's quite normal to dine at nine, order coffee and after-dinner drinks around eleven (a lot of which, like the Sidecar, the family of Alexanders and Stingers, the Rusty Nail etc. are American inventions) and sit around till the restaurant closes, at around 2 in the morning.

Although not as frequently as all that, many is the time I've had run-in lunches and dinners. Lunch at 1, coffee and drinks by 3, digestifs till about 6, then pre-dinner drinks, dinner at 9...until 2 am again. All without leaving the table.
Restaurants love this habit because they make much more money on drinks than on food.

Just another piece in my ongoing "You must come to Portugal" campaign!

Posted by: Miguel on November 12, 2003 12:03 PM

I used to drink Rusty Nails in memory of my father, but they can be brutal. Dad trained for years to be able to put that much scotch and Drambuie away! I finally decided that us kids should not try it at home.

And Miguel, your campaign is brilliant!

Posted by: Vidiot on November 12, 2003 12:45 PM

Fear not, Those Who Translate Light into Heat.

I am burning you mix swap goodness as I type. I have been avoiding this thread in earnest because apparently, NONE OF YOU LIKE SURPRISES.

I don't wanna see any tracklists until I have the earworms attatched to the titles in my grubby hand.

Posted by: brittney on November 12, 2003 01:48 PM

ana is right, my disks did not go out yesterday.

Probably tomorrow. Today I have bronchitis, says the doc.

Why does my doctor *insist* on a testicle check every time I go in? He's an ear-nose-and-throat man, for chrissakes. "Just a normal part of the diagnostic procedure" my ass! And I'm no physician, but I'm pretty damn sure there are less, ah, invasive ways of taking my temperature.

In other news, why do I always lose beautiful women to those continental writer-types? There's no shame in being beaten by a master, I suppose. Damn that Portuguese charm! *sobs quietly, coughs*

Posted by: Fes on November 12, 2003 02:03 PM

We Americans don't know how to live. Simple as that.

Posted by: Fes on November 12, 2003 02:07 PM

I can stay drunk all day and never leave the couch. Does that count?

Also, due to a combination of computer problems (a pox on you, CD writer!) and other issues (I suck) I may not have my disks out until Monday. I will now accept suggestions for penance.

Posted by: Cyrano on November 12, 2003 02:19 PM

No suggestions since I, a fellow Voider, am going to be a day late.

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 12, 2003 02:35 PM

Ha! I think I'm officially the first with the discs in the post office already. Britt and Fes, you might have yours by Sat. Vid and Val, early next week. Sorry for the shoddy liner note work, but, uh, .... well, that's about it.

Posted by: ufez on November 12, 2003 02:56 PM

The problem with cognac is that it's one of the few drinks where the very expensive ones (XO's and up) really are that much better than the rest.

I'm sure that a discussion of after-dinner drinks in a thread about mix tapes ought to have a joke about DJ Steve, but I can't find it.

I can predict a run on White Russians in Manhattan's Lower East Side around Thanksgiving.

My disks just finished burning (I finally bought blanks), but I may not get the chance to make fancy -ass covers. Those that cloak... should expect liner notes via email, uh, sometime.

Posted by: notsnot on November 13, 2003 11:34 AM

grrrr. i just discovered (on the way to work) that the master .wav on song #4 has a skip in it (the CD is old, and so is the computer, and I was taxing it mightily when I was ripping wavs). Y'all fellow dark-cloakers want me to re-burn, or will ya deal wit' it?

Posted by: notsnot on November 13, 2003 12:53 PM

My Morning Jacket! My favorite Kentucky musicians. Good pick, notsnot!

Posted by: tizzie on November 13, 2003 01:15 PM

wah, thahnk yew. I dig them pretty well, too. Their second album has accompanied me on a couple road trips, to my mood's delight.

Posted by: notsnot on November 13, 2003 03:38 PM

Skips is good. Half my songs sound like they have skips.

Posted by: ana on November 13, 2003 04:07 PM

I love "Pacific Street" and can't believe that Hem thought so little of it that it didn't end up on Rabbit Songs. That song is just beautiful.

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 13, 2003 05:27 PM

So... it's too late to get in on this swap?

Posted by: rocketman on November 13, 2003 05:39 PM

EBK - Then again, have you heard the *rest* of the Hem album? I was gonna put on "When I was drinking" or "sidewalk", but both songs are so difficult for me to listen to right now that I can't bear to sit there and make sure the recording is perfect.

Rocketman - I *believe* - this being my first 9622 swap - that after everyone posts their lists and stuff, you can beg and/or plead and/or bribe people to get their discs.

Posted by: snot on November 13, 2003 07:54 PM

Yes, I've heard the rest of "Rabbit Songs," hence the disbelief that "Pacific Street" doesn't appear on it.

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 13, 2003 08:30 PM

(and you're not the first one to include Pacific Street on a mix cd ;) )

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 13, 2003 08:36 PM

Wow, I feel like a dork for including it, since it's been done.

I tried mentally placing PS in between any of the existing songs on "Rabbit Songs", and can't really see where it would fit. And the rest of the album just flows together so well...do you know if they plan on recording another album?

Posted by: notsnot on November 13, 2003 10:12 PM

They're in the studio now. (which is the greatest news ever, btw.)

I just realized that "Beautiful Sea" isn't on Rabbit Songs either. Hem adds and pulls mp3s from their site all the time. So I ended up making a cd that includes all the songs from the site (which includes live/demo versions of "Half Acre," "Lazy Eye" and "When I Was Drinking."

What I need to do is get off my ass and find a copy of "I'm Talking With My Mouth," the cover ep with "Jackson" and their brilliant version of "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes." (some of which can be heard here.)

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 14, 2003 10:04 AM

Fear not, O monkeys who cloak themselves in nothingness: my CD burner is a-flickerin' away on my mix as we speak. I'd like to take this opportunity to kvetch about Easy CD Creator, though: If you're gonna put a "file not found" dialogue in, and give it a "Find..." button, shouldn't it launch the Windows "find" command? And once you've found the file (haven done a half-ass mp3 reorganisation since making up the tracklist), shouldn't you then take my word for it that it's the right file, even though the pathname is different? Yeesh.

So, uh, anyway, burning now, might need to wait 'till Saturday to mail 'em. And don't expect anything too fancy in the way of packaging, as I have no printer, but I'll put a tracklist and some half-assed cover art here.

to you grammarians out there: is it "half-ass" or "half-assed"?

Posted by: arto on November 14, 2003 05:19 PM

"half-assed", I'd think. And I'm a day late and a dollar short - my discs are all burned, but will mail tomorrow. Long week.

Posted by: vers on November 14, 2003 06:07 PM

Just got my mail, and ana's discs are here! I'll be listening to them a little later tonight, but wanted to give a shout of sincere thanks now.

Here's my little playlist FWIW:

American Music Club * The Confidential Agent
Breathless * Count on Angels
Golden Palominos * I’m Not Sorry
David Sylvian, Ingrid Chavez, and Ryuichi Sakamoto * Heartbeat
Brian Eno and John Cale * Spinning Away
Golden Palominos * Ride
Tweaker and David Sylvian * Linoleum
Nick Cave * The Ship Song
Jane Siberry * Calling All Angels
Al Green * I’m So Tired of Being Alone
Yo La Tengo * Our Way to Fall
One Giant Leap * The Way You Dream

Complaints cost $5.

What a nice mix, Vers. I think I put Spinning Away on one of my mixes a ways back. I'm surprised to see it crop up again.

Also, The Ship Song was my wedding dance song.

Posted by: kaf on November 14, 2003 06:23 PM

It came down to The Ship Song or I'm So Excited by the Pointer Sisters.

We had to flip a coin.

Posted by: kaf on November 14, 2003 06:31 PM

Thank you for the kind words, Mr. Kaf, and a happy though belated birthday to you. If I'd had a wedding song, it would have had to be "I Will Survive" - preferably Stipe's drunken rendition, so I admire your choice or chance of the coin.

"Spinning Away" kind of gives away my white hairs, doesn't it... but I keep hoping Eno and Cale will put their heads together again. That was a nearly perfect cd they did.

Posted by: vers on November 14, 2003 06:43 PM

I was kidding about the Pointer Sisters...

But yeah, another Cale/Eno would be good.

Posted by: kaf on November 14, 2003 06:47 PM

...

I know.

And I was kidding about "I Will Survive".

If there's stuff on my mix you don't already know, I'd be happy to send you a copy if you'd like. I've a hunch you're likely adventurous, though, so there may be nothing new.

Posted by: vers on November 14, 2003 07:02 PM

I so want Lyle Lovett's "She's No Lady" as my wedding song. Really.

Posted by: Vidiot on November 15, 2003 01:52 AM

Got my track list worked out, but I'm having burner problems. (Anyone ever gotten an "Unexpected Exception" error in Nero Express? Nero's web support is decidedly less than useful.) Will burn and mail soonest.

2. Seems So - Apples In Stereo
3. The Things That You Say That You Do - Dressy Bessy
4. Rudder - Bettie Serveert
5. Kinna Sohna - Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (remixed by Bally Sagoo)
6. Crazy - Dayroom

Having An Average Weekend - Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet

Yeah! Kids in the Hall! (flashes back to the glory days of the Chicken Lady, the Head Crusher Guy, and of course Gavin--"How much do you think my head weighs? If my head was made of veal, what would it be worth?")

All right, what the hell, here's my tracklist: (Avert thine eyes if you'd rather be surprised)

1. Huevos Rancheros -- Gump Worsley's Lament
Huevos Rancheros: Hometown faves, in fact I used to work with ex-bassist Graham "Thee Evster" Evans at the Ship & Anchor Pub a few years ago, now sadly defunct. Also, a pretty sweet-ass breakfast.
Gump Worsley: Goalie for NY Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota North Stars. Vezina Trophy winner, 1965-66 & 1967-68.
2. Tom Waits & Primus -- On The Road
Yep, it's Jack Kerouac, all right.
3. Buck 65 - 4-6-3
Halifax's best underground MC, now living in Paris and signed to Sony. Sometimes the good guys do win.
4. dsico -- Fateful Pavement (Destiny's Child -- Bills Bills Bills vs Pavement -- Silence Kit)
"Did you mean disco?"
No, my dear Google, I did not.
5. Sonic Youth -- Diamond Sea (edit)
The most beautiful thing they've done since "Expressway To Yr Skull".
6. Ben Harper -- Ground On Down
A funky beat, righteous fire in the lyrics and some seriously hellacious slide guitar. Yeah, baby, yeah.
7. Bill Withers - Who Is He And What Is He To You?
Wasn't this on the "American Beauty" soundtrack? Regardless, Bill Withers' name ought to come up every time people discuss '70s soul legends, but somehow it never does. Hell, I didn't know until about thirty seconds ago that he wrote "Ain't No Sunshine", either...
8. Oh Susannah -- Johnstown
A bit grittier and bluesier than the rest of the "Johnstown" album, but I'm a sucker for the murder ballads, and it certainly doesn't hurt to have sometime Blue Rodeo pedal steeler tearing huge electric slashes across the night sky with a Les Paul Jr. either...
9. Myles Cochran -- Getting Stronger
10. Tommy McClennan -- I'm A Guitar King
A little obscure Delta blues, anyone? The link calls him "not a very accomplished guitarist"--I beg to differ.
11. Minutemen -- Ain't Talkin Bout Love
Who was it that said every mix needs at least one cover version? Glam metal meets punk fury, consummates relationship, two minutes later it's over.
12. Dead Kennedys -- Too Drunk To Fuck
Whaddya lookin' at me for? Go ask Lee Harvey Oswald.
13. Pinetop Perkins -- The Hucklebuck
Hey, all my song transitions should rhyme! Oh yeah, Pinetop? He'd be a legend even if he didn't spend a coupla decades backing up Muddy Waters.
14. Bottle Rockets -- Radar Gun
Whaddya lookin' at me for? Go ask jonmc. And have you paid those speeding tickets yet?
15. MC Frontalot -- Crime Spree
Nerdcore hip-hop, rep-a-zent!
16. Sloan -- Everything You've Done Wrong
Nerdcore power-pop, rep-a-zent! And so we fulfill our Haligonians-in-exile content requirement.
17. Townes Van Zandt -- Dead Flowers
Big Lebowski flashbacks: Check.
Stones going country: Check.
Cover version from someone Steve Earle supposedly once called "America's greatest living songwriter" and promised to stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and tell him so: Check.
18. Fred Eaglesmith -- 49 Tons / Hey Sleepy John
You know, for best effect you ought to discover this guy by catching him at a folk festival, having never heard of him, and emerge in utter awe of his masterful songwriting, luscious harmonies and his way with anything from a one-liner ("Shame on you, son. 'Mighty Big Car' isn't a *love* song, 'Mighty Big Car' is a *gospel* song.") to an extended-length tall tale. But since you're not so lucky, you're gonna have to get by with the last track off his live CD, "Ralph's Last Show."

You had a baby and you're worried that your swap discs might be a day or two late?

JasnTMason, I absolve you. (Yeah, I'm not the Swapinistrator but that's a righteous good excuse.)

Hey! Congratulations on the little monkey!

Posted by: tizzie on November 15, 2003 07:34 AM

vidiot, you are one suave mofo. Maybe you should consult B. first. She might have other ideas.

Posted by: jonmc on November 15, 2003 12:55 PM

Thanx, tizzie

Worried? Nah, just didn't want to be considered a swap welcher. But I'm glad to hear I can finally take off the hair shirt for a reason other than that it's time to flog myself again.

Yeah, just call me "Poppa Love" now. No, no... you have to say it slow and deep, like Barry White. I'd post a picture, but we don't have any monkey outfits (turns out I'm partial to duckies anyway -- who knew?) in which to clothe her and the prehensile tail was trimmed before we could snap a Weekly World News worthy photo.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, my fellow void rending swappers will hopefully revel in the knowledge that I sent the discs today. They're coming from the San Diego area so do the mental math for approximate ETAs.

Posted by: JasnTMason on November 16, 2003 01:47 AM

Jamie Notarthomas? Haven't heard that name in a long, long while, JasnTMason. I drove him to a gig when I was doing college radio -- good songwriter, but COLOSSAL ego; he read positive reviews aloud from the stage in the middle of the show. Never seen that before...

And jon? I thought of several responses to your post. I'm not going to favor you with any of them.

Posted by: Vidiot on November 16, 2003 03:04 AM

ana, Jasn, arto: any chance I can get a copy of yr mixes for a copy of mine?

Posted by: Vidiot on November 16, 2003 03:15 AM

Sure thing, Vid, just email me with yr address:

harmonyarchtop65 [ at ] yahoo.com

Jasn: Way to make "I had to work all weekend and am basically lazy" seem like the pathetic excuse it is. Thaaaaanks.

Oh, and congratumalations.

Posted by: arto on November 16, 2003 07:14 AM

sure, vid.

Posted by: ana on November 16, 2003 09:04 AM

I'm a big fat liar.

My CDs are going out today.

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 17, 2003 03:02 AM

Vidiot,
Never did hear anything from Jamie after the early 90's, once I left upstate NY. I was going to school in Ithaca and since he was from Syracuse (I think?) he always seemed to be in town... same for Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors. I was working at WVBR then -- also local, very low wattage college station. That's where I got the cd. Gotta love free promo music. I got scads of cds that way.

Just send your s-mail to my e-mail (I just sent mine to yours) and the swap's on!

Posted by: JasnTMason on November 17, 2003 03:21 AM

My excuse for not sending out til today? I didn't have any paper for my printer. Does that count?

Posted by: notsnot on November 17, 2003 08:30 AM

Hmm. After reading everyone elses, I'm almost afraid to post my playlist (and there's no liner notes, either - sorry, fellow Void-renders).

Weather with you – Crowded House
Heavy Piano – from Saint - Germain - des - Prés Café II
Good Indian Girls – from Monsoon Wedding
Ode to my Family – Cranberries
Glider (pt 2) – from The Thomas Crown Affair She – Elvis Costello
Learning to Fly – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Silent Lucidity – Queensryche
Complime – Yann Tiersen
Champagne Supernova – Oasis
Quidam
Lemon Tree – Fool’s Garden
Too Much Love will Kill you – Queen
Beat of Passion – from Taal
Walking Ned Divine
Queen Mab Interlude – from Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo and Juliet

Posted by: Darsh on November 17, 2003 11:33 AM

Ah cool, Jasn. I was across town at WICB. Did you go to Cornell?

Posted by: Vidiot on November 17, 2003 05:47 PM

Well, they're finally in the (hopefully) capable (and far too expensive) hands of the folks at Mail Botches Excretera.

All except Vid's, as either he hasn't mailed me an address yet, or Yahoo deems me unworthy of reading mail from him.

Darsh: Big on the film music are we? Neat. I love the odd bit of Ennio Morricone or Lalo Schiffrin, at least in the films they're meant for.

Posted by: arto on November 18, 2003 12:11 AM

Yep, Vidiot, went being the operative word. I called it "Camp Cornell," as in one big party with a 15K cover charge.

Cool. We dug ICB. Even those of us working at VBR had to admit y'all had some cajones. We tried, but being beholden to commercial interests makes cajones rare commodities indeed.

You went to IC? Or just lived in Ithaca because it was "gorges?"

Posted by: JasnTMason on November 18, 2003 10:59 AM

Hey, thanks! We tried, and it was fun. I miss radio. (Yup, went to IC. TV/Radio '98.) I think it'll be time for a visit back once the snow melts -- like May or so -- I miss the place. And the Nines. Oh, do I miss the Nines.

Posted by: Vidiot on November 18, 2003 12:44 PM

Better late than never - I sent out my disks this morning, so, cloakers, expect your copy by the end of the week.

Posted by: notsnot on November 18, 2003 10:49 PM

Wow. The Nines. Haven't thought about that place in ages.

Our favorite place used to be The Dugout, but that placed closed down in the late 80s. Used to be 1 block north of the common. They had this thing called "Dimies" every Tuesday and Thursday starting around 6:00. Essentially, it was what it's name implies... 10 cent drafts. Yep, 10 cents. They were only 10 oz. ponies but still, do the math. 100 ounces of beer (swill, of course -- but seriously, would you have it any other way?) for a buck.

Who would have thought that fights were common, and then add to all of that a complete lack of ID checking at the door and not surprisingly, they were shut down. Temporarily a few times, and then permanently when someone being tossed out for being overly rowdy cracked his head open and died. Well, at least that was the rumor.

Mostly tho', we went for the cheap liquor and hot IC co-eds. Mmmm... IC co-eds. With 52 frat houses, Cornell had the party market cornered, but was sorely lacking in the female companionship department.

Meeeemooorieeees -- Like the corners of... nevermind. I plan to head back there and show my wife the beauty of fall in Ithaca. She only leaves California when pried away. I lived near Boston for four years and we've gone back to visit friends but just missed the peak foliage a few years ago. It's time again.

Posted by: JasnTMason on November 18, 2003 11:41 PM

vers, I got your mix yesterday (or the day before?). Haven't had a chance to listen, but it looks good.

Posted by: ana on November 19, 2003 06:51 PM

Hey Ana, thank you for letting me know that mix reached you, and I hope you find a couple new pleasures in it. Your mix is wonderful - great intro tracks, and Broken Social Scene is my newest favorite band - thank you!

Posted by: vers on November 19, 2003 08:36 PM

I just got your mix too, Vers. Smooth like velvet, and it kicks like a mule. Plus, you know, I always just get a kick out of getting stuff in the mail.

Posted by: arto on November 20, 2003 12:42 AM

JasnTMason, got your mix yesterday - enjoying it - and I think i'm going to explore some of the bands

Posted by: Darsh on November 21, 2003 05:04 PM

Cool, Darsh. :)) that you're enjoying it. Glad it arrived in one piece, too. I'm always suspicious marking something "FRAGILE," that it's really screaming for the USPS to finally find out how many disgruntled workers can dance on the head of my package.

Got yours, too, BTW. Exactly what I was hoping for. I'd like to think of my music library as eclectic... until I read others' playlists and don't know a single artist. Mind expansion time.

Speaking of which... EBK, got your disc yesterday. Only 5 out of 23 artists recognized. Woohoo! And dig that crazy artwork. Haven't had a chance to listen yet, tho'. Review forthcoming.

Posted by: JasnTMason on November 22, 2003 12:34 PM

Gives a shout out to Crash, Arto and Notsnot - your discs have all arrived - thank you - great stuff! I'll be listening to them today while I get some work done. It'll help drown out my grumbling.

Posted by: vers on November 23, 2003 07:40 AM

Those arrived for me too, vers. Nice treat getting back from the meetup to find that they arrived.

Posted by: ana on November 23, 2003 08:53 AM

I*do* believe I've received everything I'm supposed to receive. I've got Ana's disc 2 in the car right now...very right.

Posted by: notsnot on November 23, 2003 01:38 PM

*huge sigh of relief* You know, I was looking at the little "Honest Mr. Customs Guy, these ain't worth nuthin'" stickers on ana's and vers' envelopes, and hoping that my forgetting such a detail didn't resign my disks to whatever the inanimate object equivalent of the kleig-lights-in-the-face-rubber-gloves-and-sadistic-grin routine beloved of customs inspectors everywhere is, thus subjecting their arrival to a Trebek's lifetime worth of jeopardy.

That sentence didn't even make sense to me. Grammarian, please hope me!
