November 23, 2003 : CD Swap Reviews!

Since no one else has, I'll be the instigator.

CD swap reviews go here! Posted by mr_crash_davis at November 23, 2003 06:21 PM

People have said these things about that :

uh, crash... and everyone else who posts threads, you now need to select 'open' for allow comments when starting a new thread.

w00t! The mystery, she is solved.

Posted by: Crash on November 23, 2003 11:56 PM

Yeah, thought this was like the comment link on the White House web page for a bit. (Tell us what you think, and we'll cheerfully ignore you!)

Posted by: Vidiot on November 24, 2003 10:06 AM

In our group, I've only yet received Ufez's (I think, perhaps, holiday mailing has begun interfering with transport, and today's morning post might have a few packages in it...). Ufez's was, as expected, highly enjoyable. A LOT of bands I'd never heard of (always a pleasure to be introduced to new music) with a leavening of fresh chestnuts from familiar faces (Interpol, Pogues, Social Distortion, Bob Marley). A pleasure to listen to. Thanks, Ufez. [imaginary line break] In other news, have we solved the line break conundrum?

Posted by: Fes on November 24, 2003 10:13 AM

Still working on a fix, folks.

Posted by: jpoulos on November 24, 2003 11:21 AM

*wiggles provocatively in lucite box as a silent display of continuing thanks*

Posted by: Fes on November 24, 2003 11:27 AM

Fes, your Luomo motherlode is in the works.

Posted by: ana on November 24, 2003 03:13 PM

Glad to hear you got my disc, Fes. I was beginning to get worried. Also glad you're enjoying it. Lemme know if there's anyone you want further info on.

I haven't rec'd anything yet, but we'll see when I get my mail tonight.

Posted by: ufez on November 24, 2003 03:43 PM

EBK. Dude. Awesome! Totally. Well, other than my personal bias in the general direction of Rancid. But even that may change thanks to this compilation.

Favorites - Cero y Uno, National Disgrace, Cassavettes, Dress Sexy at My Funeral, Twilight

Shame I feel at being outmixed. Maybe my piddly offering becomes a xmas tree decoration? Being a Bengals/White Sox fan, I have practice at this: "Just wait 'til next year!"

*kicking at the ground, with sufficiently penitent look*

Posted by: JasnTMason on November 25, 2003 12:19 PM

Ana - In re: Luomo: thanks! Can I send you a copy of my mix by way of recompense?

Posted by: Fes on November 25, 2003 12:59 PM

EBK - got yours last night as well, and been listening to it all day. stupendous. Thank you

Posted by: Darsh on November 25, 2003 03:10 PM

Sure, Fes.

Posted by: ana on November 25, 2003 04:26 PM

I've gotten both JasnTMason and Darsh's cds. Both are very cool I've been getting through the work day with them. I hadn't listened to a lot of the songs on JasnTMason's cd for years (siouxsie, smithereens, the reverend), so it was nice to hear those again.

Darsh, your cd jumps all over the place, which is perfect for keeping me actively listening during the day. I just have one minor quibble... Silent Lucidity!?!?!? ;)

I'm glad you're both enjoying mine. There is a mistake in the liner notes. The Witch Hunter Robin soundtrack is by Taku Iwasaki, the song that is included, "Shell" is actually by a band called Bana who appears on the soundtrack. The freedb doesn't distinguish between artists and my cut and paste job of the playlist didn't catch it.

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 25, 2003 08:18 PM

ana, I have a feeling you're getting the short end of the deal on this one. That Luomo is very cool.

Posted by: Fes on November 26, 2003 01:19 AM

Fes! You sweetie pie! Thanks for sending your mix even though I was a non-participant. That was so thoughtful. Can't wait to play it!

Posted by: tizzie on November 26, 2003 03:50 PM

Okay, finally got the last of 'em. (Well, except Vid's, but I'm not expecting it for another week at least...)

In the order I recieved them:

vers - I've always been a sucker for the odd bit of lush melancholy. Must be all those formative years spent listening to Leonard Cohen and Simon & Garfunkel. *waves hipster cred bye-bye* How did you know I was thinking about the Golden Palominos a couple days before your mix arrived? Magic. Plus, anything with Al Green on it is just that much better...

ana - disk 1: Insane circus music! Planet of the Apes! Music to inspire the over-use of exclamation marks! (And that's just track one...) Probably my fave of your two, as it's a little more uptempo and accessible. And I laughed out loud at 'Losing My Edge'--"I heard you threw out your computer. And bought a synthesizer and a drum machine. Because you want to make something real--a Yaz record."

disk 2 - More mellow, more avant-garde, reminds me of the sort of trippy stuff David Wisdom used to spin on the CBC's (now sadly defunct) Nightlines. Nice, but the sort of thing you need to be in the mood for. (Which isn't a dis, just an observation.) I keep coming back to that Neptunes track, though--"I'm DaVinci, don't make me draw your pain."

crash (davis, I presume?) - Honestly thought you were joking about the origami CD covers. I'm impressed. (And, I hasten to add, I promise to find a proper printer for the next swap so's you guys don't need to decipher my horrendous chicken-scratch.) Love the whole "boy/girl" theme. Found the "girl" disc a little weepy for my taste, though--give it time--but the "boy" disc kicked azz.

And notsnot: Way to include the same Oh Susannah track as me, ya big copycat. (kidding...) About the only things missing for my idea of roots/alt-country/whatever heaven are Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miller and Blue Rodeo. Top notch fo' sho'.

Posted by: arto on November 27, 2003 03:06 AM

Tizzie my dear, no matter how the names line out, you are ALWAYS in my Swap Group :)

Posted by: Fes on November 28, 2003 01:01 AM

*swoon*
*thud*
You sweet talker!

Posted by: tizzie on November 28, 2003 01:22 PM

UncaFess was kind enough to send a leech like me a copy too. It's Fes-tastic. So much FUN.

Who's that gigolo on the street
With his hands in his pockets and his crocodile feet
Hanging off the curb, looking all disturbed
At the boys from home. They all came running
They were making noise, manhandling toys
That's the girls on the block with the nasty curls
Wearing padded bras sucking beers through straws
Dropping down their drawers, where did you get yours?

Thank you, Fester!

Posted by: jpoulos on December 1, 2003 09:48 AM

you are very welcome. I'm glad you like it :) Kick it old school, Lupo!

Secretly, I'm hoping that the adjective "Festastic" takes off in the general consciousness.

Sweet talk is only ONE of my skills, Tizzie my dear :D

Tallytime!

those who cloak themselves in nothingness
Sent: anathema, crash, notsnot, vers
Not Sent: arto

those whose clarity rends the Void
Sent: darshna, the Kid, jasntmason
Not Sent: cyrano, mars

those who translate light into heat
Sent: ufez, fes
Not Sent: brittney, valerie, vidiot

Less than pleasing, I must say. Burn and send, laggards!

Posted by: Fes on December 1, 2003 03:11 PM

I've gotten discs from everyone in my group, and am at the moment listening to "This Week's Solace", by notsnot. It's quite pleasing to the ear so far.

Last week I listened to anathema's dual-CD set. I enjoyed disc two more than disc one, but that's probably because I'm an old fogey (and don't much care for Eminem).

I also played and replayed vers' disc over the weekend, and if I had a CD player in my car it'd be in there pretty frequently, I suspect.

I have yet to sample arto's mix, but the night is young.

Posted by: Crash on December 1, 2003 07:11 PM

I want to give thanks and kudos for all who shared nothingness with me. All discs were received, and all are being enjoyed... including yours, Crash sir, though there are songs there that will make certain friends question my temporal sanity. It's good to be reminded sometimes. I'm grateful to know that a couple of favorite songs found a place with people.. thank you, Ana for being willing to entertain a down (I lurve disc 2 of your set) and you Crash for being openminded. Arto and Notsnot... you did good... Townes on one and Emmylou on the other.. thank you!

Posted by: vers on December 1, 2003 07:42 PM

Fes, arto did send his (or hers, whatever).

Posted by: ana on December 1, 2003 08:19 PM

I have to admit that I haven't listened to any yet. But I have finals to study for the next couple weeks so they'll be in rotation, with reviews to follow.

Posted by: ana on December 1, 2003 08:21 PM

Fes, I think that version of "Am I the same girl" is now my New Favorite Song.

And no way is Lucy Kaplansky too alt country. She is awesome.

Hey, anybody who's interested - Over the Rhine will be on World Cafe tomorrow. Their new "Ohio" album is incredible. Every song on it has merit, but the first cut, "BPD," is addictive.

No, I have no idea what BPD means....

Posted by: tizzie on December 1, 2003 08:57 PM

Fes, arto did send his (or hers, whatever).

And may I add, that cackling maniacly and intoning "Fly, my pretties! Fly!" on the way out of the post office is apparently the sort of behaviour they frown upon.

Oh, and the last time I checked, I still (as my dad used to say) posessed external plumbing.

Posted by: arto on December 2, 2003 02:05 AM

You use an outhouse? Oh, dear.

Posted by: tizzie on December 2, 2003 09:05 AM

arto: my apologies. Your timeliness and cackling have been noted. So: What's up with the rest of you?? Brittney, Valerie, Vidiot, Mars, Cyrano. These are the names I shall give to little Astarte, should the CDs not be sent at the earliest possible convenience!

Posted by: tizzie on December 2, 2003 11:37 AM

9622: moo, moo, my aching --

I just can't.

Here's a buggy question: Is anyone else missing the scroll bar at the bottom of the page? I'm only getting the latest tizzie-licious thread (in both IE and Safari), and everything else is in the ether, except for what I can navigate to via the "Recent Comments" list.

Also: Hi, everybody!

There have never been any other threads.

Same here in Safari. What the hell do we pay these people for, anyway?

Posted by: tizzie on December 2, 2003 01:48 PM

Vers, honey, never fear...I've got a Townes song on mine, too. (come to think of it, I've never made a swap nor regular mix disc that *didn't* have Townes on it. Sick, huh?)

SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP!!!!!!!!!

Got Cyrano's last night - and been listening to it since. I knew none of the artists/groups, but am loving most of the tracks

Posted by: Darsh on December 9, 2003 09:13 AM

Speaking of Swaps . . . isn't it about time for another? I promise not to back out this time.

Posted by: mikro on February 20, 2004 09:57 AM

It seems to me that once, long ago, a fellow named McNally was going to send me a disc.

It seems a distant memory now.

Posted by: kaf on February 20, 2004 11:26 AM

Who made me a great swap disc with "Instant Karma" on it? I've lost the sleeve. It's a great CD - the Irish music drives hubby batty.

Posted by: tizzie on February 20, 2004 08:51 PM

Eyeballkid makes the best mixes. There, I've said it.

Posted by: ColdChef on February 20, 2004 09:11 PM

*blush*

I was supposed to recieve two discs from some folks somewhere, but they never arrived. That may have been my last swap.

*sigh*

Why not join in and say something too?

A note about posting images:

We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found here. Thanks.
