November 25, 2003 : Wait 'til you see his package!

With the holidays coming up and this thread putting me in a rare happy and giving spirit, I've got a modest proposal. How about a 9622 secret Santa/Satan/Hannukah Harry/Kwanzaa Keith gift swap? I'll even offer to admin it. Any thoughts?

Posted by ufez at November 25, 2003 12:03 PM

People have said these things about that :

Love it. I'm in.

Posted by: tizzie on November 25, 2003 12:14 PM

Sounds good. But first I have to (gulp!) get around to sending out my mix CDs.

Posted by: Vidiot on November 25, 2003 12:21 PM

Me too.

Posted by: Fes on November 25, 2003 12:22 PM

I mean, count me in me too, not I still have to send out my CDs me too.

*is that an icy demonic chill?*

Posted by: Fes on November 25, 2003 12:23 PM

I would love to participate, but I'm not even buying gifts for my family this year. We're all very broke, and I'm still trying to save up to buy a home.

Posted by: jpoulos on November 25, 2003 01:02 PM

Yeah. I don't think I'd be in that either.

Posted by: kaf on November 25, 2003 01:19 PM

Buncha scrooges!

Posted by: Ghost of Christmas Present on November 25, 2003 01:22 PM

I could do it if there is a cheap present ceiling (please to be remembering low Canadian dollar). One year I was in a gift swap where the deal was you couldn't send anything new, it had to be something you already owned, and wasn't a "re-gift". The idea being everyone got a little something of the other person. Then later names were revealed.

My only concern is that it might be a bit late to get presents sent from Portugal. Cause if I don't get Miguel as my secret Santa, I consider this totally worthless. I'm sure he has lots of unopened bottles he's just dying to get out of his cluttered wine cellar.

Posted by: salmonberry on November 25, 2003 02:04 PM

I wouldn't let salmonberry in. She's likely to send you some Canadian music.

Posted by: eyeballkid on November 25, 2003 03:29 PM

Or a toque. You know how them Canucks is about they toques.

Posted by: Crash on November 25, 2003 03:53 PM

Oh, it's a lovely idea. I'm afraid you'll have to count me out, as I, too, am broke. And cranky.

Unless we could all do something simple, like exchange Flooz.

Posted by: c_s on November 25, 2003 04:40 PM

*scratches ebk and crash off her christmas lists*

It wasn't like you were going to get Leafs toques. Sheesh.

Posted by: salmonberry on November 25, 2003 05:26 PM

Unless we could all do something simple, like exchange Flooz.

That sounds so dirty I can't stop trying to lick my nipples...

Posted by: Cyrano on November 25, 2003 06:36 PM

Maybe what we should do is try to have some kind of a cyber party - Pick a time, find a chat room and all pour ourselves a drink and then type christmas carols as fast as we can in unison.

Well, maybe not the last part.

And hold up cocktail napkins with each others' names on them, in front of our webcams.

No, not naked. It's quite drafty in here.

Posted by: tizzie on November 25, 2003 07:33 PM

Someone suggested that idea a while ago. I like it.

Posted by: Cyrano on November 25, 2003 08:02 PM

This is the third year I'll be sending out my Christmas mix (some of you were threatened with a copy two years ago here). If you'd like a copy, email me within the next week or so and I'll put you on the list.

I'll try not to be psychologically scarred when no one asks for one again this year.

Jolly hollydays!

Posted by: ColdChef on November 25, 2003 08:22 PM

where is everyone? turkey hunting.

Posted by: thomturkspike on November 26, 2003 12:16 PM

Wish I were. I'm at work today and tomorrow (they bring in a big catered feast and it's generally a fairly mellow day, so it's not so bad), but will be heading to see the family over the weekend.)

Posted by: Turkiot on November 26, 2003 03:49 PM

I've been to market and got the turkey. After all that talk on the blue, I'm brining the bird for the first time. I'll send out virtual leftovers!

Posted by: tizzie on November 26, 2003 03:53 PM

You people and your crazy November Thanksgiving. Canada had ours WEEKS ago. Did you see us make a big fuss over it? NooOooOOOooOooO. You people with your big balloons and parades. It's insane. Isn't Christmas enough for you?

Posted by: salmonberry on November 26, 2003 06:45 PM

"You people and your crazy November Thanksgiving. Canada had ours WEEKS ago. Isn't Christmas enough for you?"
Happy late: Remembrance Day November salmonberry then.
To the rest: Gobble Gobble & Turkiot & the rest whom may be working may I eat your pumpkin pie;P

Nice idea, but I'm broke as a joke.

Posted by: adampsyche on November 27, 2003 09:05 AM

Okay, here's the deal:

For those that want to participate, e-mail me at monkeyxmasAThotmail.com with your name and addy. Deadline to e-mail me is 5PM CST Sunday December 7th.

Let's stick to a reasonable price range: say $10-$20. If you want to go over that, then there's nothing I can do about it.

I'll send e-mails Sunday night with your respective (willing) receivees. I'd like the deadline for mailing out to be Monday, December 15th.

If you fail to mail anything to your respective receivee, then you really really suck and shall henceforth be ostracized by the entire community. For real, don't participate if you're going to waffle.

Any questions or suggestions? Amendments?

monkeyxmas@hotmail.com:

Heh. Rejected.

Anyway, Ufez, here is my reply:

I would love to do this - but if people want to go
with a lower $$ amount, homemade presents, or the
personal idea that someone suggested, I'd be down with that too. Ideally, I just want to give everybody a Porsche and a bottle of cognac, but my budget is more in line with the Matchbox car and can o' beer :-)

Posted by: tizzie on December 3, 2003 12:54 PM

Yeah, I don't know what happened. I created the account and now I can't log in. wtf?

Anyways, there doesn't seem to be critical mass, so I may just chalk it up to "An E for Effort and T for nice try".

I don't want to waste a perfectly recyclable thread though, so....

What's on everyone's gift lists this year? Peace and good will is implied for everyone except eyeballkid.

Posted by: ufez on December 3, 2003 02:01 PM

My grandma always gives me fifty bucks, which just feels so *impersonal*, ya know? The check always winds up in the bank, and doesn't become a present so much as a buttress to my checking account. SO this year i asked her to get me the Johnny Cash "Unearthed" box set. Other than that, I'd like santa to bring me some motivation to do something, some candy, and maybe a girl who'll put up with me for more than a couple months.

Posted by: notsnot on December 3, 2003 03:29 PM

If you're bringing her hot meals from her favorite diner, notsnot, I think it's the least she could do.

Posted by: ufez on December 3, 2003 03:39 PM

on preview, what eyeballkid said.

Posted by: ana on December 3, 2003 03:43 PM

Forget Santa, I want dong_resin in my stocking this year.

Posted by: Paris Hilton on December 3, 2003 04:50 PM

No, no, no, Ufez...That's my *ex*-g/f I do that for. Whuwait...how the hell did you know about that?

Posted by: notsnot on December 3, 2003 05:30 PM

No gift swap? Right then, I'm eating all these rum balls myself.

I win either way.

Posted by: salmonberry on December 3, 2003 05:40 PM

dammit! I want the rum balls! Have you no shame, woman?

Posted by: tizzie on December 3, 2003 09:47 PM

What's on everyone's gift lists this year?

Rum balls. And I want a gift certificate to go to one of those spas where you get a massage.

Posted by: tizzie on December 3, 2003 09:51 PM

Y'know, "Unearthed" is a really unfortunate title for a posthumously-released box set.

Posted by: Vidiot on December 3, 2003 10:10 PM

I guess you're not familiar with the LIberace "Autopsy" box set, then.

Posted by: kaf on December 4, 2003 11:34 AM

I'm not familiar with much about Liberace, and I'd like to keep it that way.

(By the way, kaf, how was The Bacon Hat this year?)

Posted by: Vidiot on December 4, 2003 04:29 PM

RUM BALLS: for you Tizzie, as per the Kraft Canada site.

Yield: 2 dozen rum balls
Ingredients

2 squares BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, chopped
1/4 cup each: corn syrup and icing sugar
1/4 cup dark rum or orange juice
2 cups CHRISTIE OREO Baking Crumbs
1 cup finely chopped pecans
chocolate sprinkles, coconut or sliced amonds

Directions

1 MICROWAVE chocolate in microwavable bowl on MEDIUM for 2 minutes, stir until melted. Add corn syrup, icing sugar, rum, crumbs and pecans; mix well. Chill until firm enough to handle, at least 1 hour.

2 Roll dough into 1 inch balls. Roll in chocolate sprinkles, toasted coconut or toasted sliced almonds.

3 STORE in airtight container in refrigerator for at least three days before serving to mellow flavours.

"mellow flavours" are for wussies, btw.

Posted by: salmonberry on December 4, 2003 06:56 PM

So's orange juice. Then they're "orange juice balls" which sounds nowhere near as appetizing.

Posted by: salmonberry on December 4, 2003 06:58 PM

Sadly, I overcooked the turkey. Of course my family were kind, but inside my heart I knew...knew I had failed them individually and as a group. Utterly.

Posted by: kaf on December 4, 2003 07:09 PM
Why not join in and say something too?
