June 16, 2004 : Finally A Chance To Arrest Them English Intarweb Hippies!

So who do you want to win? And who do you think will win Euro 2004?

Btw, the English fans have been praised by every editor, columnist, shoe-shine and housewife in the country - they've been great fun, all 30,000 of them, bar the dozen or so racist sociopaths who tried to stir things up and who, according to the police, aren't even football fans. It's been my first opportunity to watch English fans up-close and first-hand and, like everyone else here in Lisbon and Porto, I've found them charming, friendly and sceptical, leading me to think the whole hooliganism brouhaha is wildly exaggerated.

People have said these things about that :

Portugese cops are Guns & Roses fans?

Posted by: jonmc on June 16, 2004 11:20 AM

England will, of course, prevail.

Did it sound like I believed it?

Posted by: kaf on June 16, 2004 11:24 AM

I'm a Croatia fan myself. I have no reason to be other than I really enjoyed their ride to the Semis in WC '98, and I've kind of held allegience to them since. Unfortunately, their goalie's got a bit of a thigh problem, so I'm not holding my breath.

btw, for those trapped in the office, the Spain v. Greece play by play is here. If there's a winner, they get the first quarterfinal spot.

Posted by: ufez on June 16, 2004 11:46 AM

This all has something to do with this "footing ball" leisure activity I've heard so little about, doesn't it.

Seems kind of gay.

Posted by: dong resin on June 16, 2004 11:49 AM

Won't find any bodies trolling in an empty koi pond, ah reckon.

Posted by: dong resin on June 16, 2004 12:32 PM

Where are you going for a week, el dong? Hawaii? Lebowskifest?

Posted by: tizzie on June 16, 2004 12:57 PM

Not really going anywhere, I just know I won't be updating my blog for that length of time, and didn't want to keep annoying people.

I have at long last a little spare time, I'm going to see if I can learn to draw and do this comic strip type thing that I've had in mind for some time now.

Posted by: dong resin on June 16, 2004 01:14 PM

Despite the poor showing in the first game, I predict Italia will snatch victory from the jaws of defeat...

...unlike Euro 2000 where we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Forza gli Azzurri!

Posted by: romakimmy on June 16, 2004 01:18 PM

I thought it was annoying to people when you did update your blog.

Sorry, just kidding, I couldn't resist.

Since you and I are the only non-soccer-fans here, I can't afford to piss you off.

Posted by: jon "play an american sport, dammit" mc on June 16, 2004 02:00 PM

Is this "soccer" something I'd have to have a brain lesion to appreciate?

Posted by: Crash on June 16, 2004 02:35 PM

Go France

Posted by: thomcatspike on June 16, 2004 02:55 PM

I used to play soccer, then I hit a growth spurt, went up 7" in a very painful series of months. I guess my centre of gravity decided enough was enough, cause it left me somtime during that period and I haven't seen it since.

Which makes soccer a very difficult sport to play. DAMN YOU GENETICS!

Posted by: salmonberry on June 16, 2004 02:56 PM

Hey, 7" will hurt anybody.

Posted by: dong resin on June 16, 2004 03:50 PM

Ummm. Go Pistons?

...And we didn't burn nary a car.

Posted by: Mars Crash on June 16, 2004 04:57 PM

I once spent a night in jail after celebrating a Chelsea victory with a little too much exuberance. I have met many hooligans; indeed I have swum in the hooliganism brouhaha. There are more hahas than bruises, but the bruisers are very nasty people for real. They were smoking less pot in my day, though. That might explain the charm, friendliness and resemblance to Keanu Reeves, if not the scepticism.

Posted by: liam on June 16, 2004 05:03 PM

And allez Suisse!

Posted by: liam on June 16, 2004 05:04 PM

Hey liam, didja ever get that Gmail invite? I sent it about 30 seconds after I posted this.

I hear tell that the invites sometimes go into Yahoo's bulkmail folder automatically, so it may have gotten sorted into there.

Posted by: Vidiot on June 16, 2004 10:28 PM

Thanks, Sam. It did go into a bulkmail folder, but fortunately I didn't get around to deleting it. I hate yahoos. Com.

Posted by: liam on June 17, 2004 01:49 AM

SInce we're on the subject of yahoo, I have a question. Ever since i impulsively opened an aventuremail account, I am having trouble getting into my yahoo mail.

I eventually want to switch all three over to gmail, but I want to use the gmail acct for a little while longer to get used to it before I give up yahoomail entirely. To be perfectly honest, yahoomail is just fine - I'd contiue using it except that my work computer has it blocked. They haven't blocked gmail yet - they probably will as soon as I get eveything moved over to it, heh.

OK, the problem/question - why is my yahoo mail at home f00ked up now? Has aventure mail screwed it up, or is it just coincidence? Is anatomy destiny?

Sincerely yours,
Confused in Kentucky.

Posted by: tizzie on June 17, 2004 06:48 AM

tizzie, it may just be coincidence--yahoo just upgraded their mail service two days ago, and I think it's having some growing pains. Have you tried logging out, dumping your cookies, swimming in the brouhaha, etc?

Posted by: dana on June 17, 2004 09:59 AM

Thanks, honey, but yes. I have deleted, rebooted, chanted, and all kinds of other things that I know how to do. I keep thinking that there is something that I do not know how to do, like give a computer an enema. Which hole do you put the nozzle in?

Posted by: tizzie on June 17, 2004 10:21 AM

Yeah, Yahoo's fucked for me for the time being too. I'd give it a little bit before you in too much of a tizz...oh. nevermind.

Posted by: ufez on June 17, 2004 11:34 AM

Hey Ufez, tomorrow when I'm on my way to Louisville, you'll have to listen to this:

Lebowski Live Lunch - Noon EST - WFPK (91.9 FM) presents selected songs from the soundtrack covered by Louisville musicians including Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Paul K, King Kong, The Children, AM Sunday, SKL, The Debutantes, Gareth Jones, Gayle Wynters, and others. Founding Dudes, Will and Scott will host along with Jeff "The Dude" Dowd. The show will be broadcast live in streaming audio from WFPK.org

Jen and I are taking the camera for shout-outs, y'all.

Posted by: tizzie on June 17, 2004 12:41 PM

"That's fuckin' ingenious, if I understand it correctly. It's a Swiss fuckin' watch."

Posted by: Vidiot on June 17, 2004 01:28 PM

Tizzie: Roll a "X" for us...a gutter ball may be up our alley.

Posted by: thomcatspike on June 17, 2004 04:16 PM

What have I been thinking of, to have been away so long, ungroomed?

*grooms monkey-brethren, ducks poo ably flung*

Also, I'm drubk, and that should count for something umbilical in this world, should it knot?

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on June 18, 2004 10:12 AM

Stavros!! You wonderful, wonderful wonderchicken! Welcome back, you drubken hairy ape, you!
*smooooooooooooch*

Posted by: tizzie on June 18, 2004 10:39 AM

Sweet shot of the simian, stav. Seriously.

Oh, tiz, my sweet. I hope you wacky kids don't do anything Julianne Moore wouldn't do. Sadly, I'll be here, dreaming of duckpin-bedecked valkyries Saddamning their way through the pristine lanes of my mind.

I wish you turkeys and Caucasians galore. And no splits.

Posted by: Chico on June 18, 2004 12:31 PM

Mark it, dude.

Posted by: Vidiot on June 18, 2004 12:44 PM

"Caucasians galore"
In bowling, WTF is that?

Posted by: thomcatspike on June 18, 2004 12:57 PM

In bowling terms, a Caucasian is a drink with vodka, kahlua and cream or milk.

It tastes especially good if the Jesus is fucking with you, or if you've just thrown all your underwear at some nihilists.

Posted by: Chico on June 18, 2004 01:05 PM

Q: Are these the Nazis, Walter?
A: No, Donny, these men are nihilists. There's nothing to be afraid of.

Posted by: Vidiot on June 18, 2004 01:09 PM

I have no use for nihilists. Or, to put it more succinctly:

Say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, but at least it's an ethos.

Posted by: ufez on June 18, 2004 01:10 PM

and Aimee Mann is still cute. Even with nine toes.

Posted by: Vidiot on June 18, 2004 01:11 PM

What happened to Aimee Mann's toe??

Hiya Stav!

Posted by: Fes on June 18, 2004 02:08 PM

Apropos of nothing: why is there so little *smiling* in internet porn?

I'd be smiling.

Posted by: Fes on June 18, 2004 02:12 PM

Fes, man, it's their job. No matter what they're doing, some days it sure feels like work. Humping, humping, humping, sucky sucky fucky licky humpy doggy 1, 2, 3, aaaand finish, lather rinse repeat.

Or so I have read.

(And Aimee Mann was the one what lost her toe in the movie. You have seen it, eh? If not, you have a task for the weekend, my friend.)

Posted by: Chico on June 18, 2004 03:05 PM

Which is why amateur porn is best.

No star can compare to the sexiness of a housewife grooving on buzz of being desired.

Posted by: jonmc on June 18, 2004 03:29 PM

Anyone needing g-mail - not sure if anyone still needs an invite to g-mail - email me if you do {never knew to check my settings for the invites, dope}

Posted by: thomcatspike on June 18, 2004 04:33 PM

Thanks chico for the explanation. [looks at skin, licks] bluck!…damn freckles.

Posted by: thomcatspike on June 18, 2004 04:40 PM

For those of you following the Euro and it's attendant diva dramas, I give you Totti's Ultimate Spit Game (courtesy of matteo via my blog)

Now if someone would kindly find me a Flash game where I can simultaneously slap:

- Totti for being a pouncy diva
- Vieri & Del Piero for giving it away and fucking up more often than not
- and Trap for employing the spectacularly idiotic "Sit on a 1-0 lead 'til the bloody end" at the 76th minute

I'd be much obliged. [/cranky Azzurri fan]

i dont really mind who wins it migs , one of the purest joys of being a 'neutral' is the ability to support both teams during a match.
What on earth has happened to portugal ?
Lets hope they start a revival against spain.

Posted by: sgt.serenity on June 20, 2004 11:20 AM

Your wish is our command, Sarge. Spain has been duly sent packing! :)

Posted by: Miguel on June 20, 2004 06:19 PM

Sweet. However, I dunno where my loyalties will lie should Portugal wind up facing England--and more importantly, Calgary's own Owen Hargreaves. And my bandwagon-jumping muscles are a little tired after two months' worth of Stanley Cup playoffs...

Posted by: arto on June 20, 2004 07:05 PM

and the revival continues against england !

*dances highland jig with migs*

Why not join in and say something too?
