August 24, 2004 : Shameless Self-Promotion

Since my blog is still on extended hiatus, please indulge me a little and let me use this space for a little self-promotion. A buddy of mine is a comic book writer in LA. He and some friends have created a book called "Tex: George Bush and the Fine Art of Character Assasination". It's Bush as a satyrical superhero, and it's hilarious. I've created a little animated trailer/music video to promote the book, and I'm pretty proud of it. The music is by a band called Jacaranda, and it's part of a soundtrack CD that comes with every comic book.

You can see the trailer here: http://bushcomic.com/trailer.html.

People have said these things about that :

Awesome! I want a copy!

Posted by: Ryan on August 24, 2004 10:54 AM

Wheee! I enjoyed that very much.

Now I'ma go back to being miserable.

Posted by: dana on August 24, 2004 11:07 AM

But at least your chocha is clean...

Posted by: jpoulos on August 24, 2004 11:20 AM

The stage is set for revolution! Go Lupo!

Posted by: tizzie on August 24, 2004 11:37 AM

that was fantastic

Posted by: adam on August 24, 2004 01:24 PM

That's real sweet, lupo. The animation (to a good song!) kicks solid bum. Although:

It's Bush as a satyrical superhero

If Mr. Flight Suit is gonna be getting his satyr-action on, I might just wait for the sanitized TBS version.

Posted by: Chico on August 24, 2004 03:32 PM

wy kant jonny spel?

Posted by: jpoulos on August 24, 2004 03:39 PM

Actually, I thought the flightsuit bulge was wayyyy too generous.

Not that I would know first hand. Ewww. *shudder*

Posted by: tizzie on August 24, 2004 04:02 PM

jpo, i thot u ment ezakly wut yu rote. also ew.

Posted by: Chico on August 24, 2004 04:10 PM

Tiz: The artist is well-known in the gay erotic comic world--hence the bulge.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 24, 2004 04:40 PM

Now I'm gonna be singin' 'La La La' fer days!

But seriosly Dude, that rocks!

Posted by: towerbrave on August 24, 2004 08:43 PM

Well, okay - you've been doing important stuff, then.

I won't complain about the comment spam, then. We must have our priorities!

Posted by: yhbc on August 24, 2004 09:04 PM

I just realized today how bad the comment spam has gotten. I'll see if I can fix it tomorrow.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 24, 2004 10:50 PM

Lupo, I know we don't always say it in so many words around here, but I was kidding. There. I said it.

Also, I love the work, and am doing my part to patriotically email it to both partisans and non-partisans. Thanks for sharing, and your effort!

Posted by: yhbc on August 24, 2004 11:44 PM

Mad prizzops, Lupo. Supercool.

Posted by: kaf on August 24, 2004 11:44 PM

I don't really want to jump on the back-patting bandwagon, lupo, so I guess I'll just have to cop a feel up front. Well done, sir.

Posted by: ufez on August 25, 2004 12:24 AM

Man, you had me at "Giant homicidal zombie baby." A chicken in every pot, and a giant homicidal zombie baby in every garage! Giant homicidal zombie babies of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose except your diminutive stature, passive nature, and non-undeadness!

And as for the comment spam: I think somebody oughtta fix the comment spammers. You know, in the Bob Barker sense.

Posted by: arto on August 25, 2004 01:07 AM

That fuckin' rocked, j-po! Pimp-rockets, engage!

(PS Hi y'all. I've been spending the last coupla months dead for tax purposes. That wonderchicken at MeFi is a bot.)

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on August 25, 2004 08:34 AM

Good morning, Mister Wonderchicken!

Actually, I thought the flightsuit bulge was wayyyy too generous.

[redacted comment about large bulges and inchoate arrogance which really, really didn't make any sense]

Wheeee!

Posted by: dana on August 25, 2004 10:23 AM

commish: yeah, I know you were kidding. I was mortified when I logged in and saw all the shite.

MT users out there, can't I just change "mt_comments.cgi" (or whatever) to "mt_nospam_comments.cgi" (or whatever)?

Posted by: jpoulos on August 25, 2004 12:55 PM

yes, jpo, but there's something tricky involved that I'm just not figuring out. But ">this looks helpful.

Posted by: dana on August 25, 2004 01:36 PM

ah, I meant this. (Another way to trick spammers is to force them to preview, like I didn't do just now....grumble grumble...)

Posted by: dana on August 25, 2004 01:37 PM

This one: 10) Close old comments. David Raynes' plugin allows you to close entries to comments for any entries older than a given number of days (defaults to five). was the only solution I had ever heard of, but that article has a lot of others.

I vote for whatever is easiest for you administrator types.

Posted by: tizzie on August 25, 2004 02:02 PM

This looks like a good solution as well, but I can't get the damned thing to load.

Posted by: dana on August 25, 2004 02:57 PM

I say we just give up and shut the site down. or not. ya know, whatever.

Posted by: tj on August 25, 2004 03:23 PM

Yes, perhaps we should abandon 9622 and offer its fertile crevasses as a habitat for spammers. Like when they sink boats off the coast to help the ecosystem.

Posted by: dana on August 25, 2004 04:20 PM

I'm running the MT-Blacklist plugin, but it doesn't seem to be working. I may need to update it. I'm running MySQL behind this site, so that MT-Close won't work. Still, keep the ideas coming.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 25, 2004 04:42 PM

What about this?

We've got to do something to keep this place alive!

Posted by: dana on August 25, 2004 04:50 PM

First cute puppies, now KITTENS. And kittens looking on helplessly. My. heart. can't. take. it.

Posted by: salmonberry on August 25, 2004 05:29 PM

Not to mention sexy, compassionate firemen! You can rescue me anytime, Baby!

Oh, um... if anyone wants to see more comic madness, check out Stripfight -especially Ive Sorocuk for Super-villain cuteness. My stuff (Maggie) isn't great, but it's getting better.

Posted by: towerbrave on August 25, 2004 06:06 PM

MT users out there, can't I just change "mt_comments.cgi" (or whatever) to "mt_nospam_comments.cgi" (or whatever)?

Well, at least change it to fling_poo.cgi! (Note: Skot at izzlepfaff changed his to flipwilson.cgi, as I recall. Send him a mail, if you can't find a primer on what to do, mebbe....)

Also, I run MySql and use Mt-Close, no probs, at the Bottle.

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on August 25, 2004 07:24 PM

Dana, that fireman is my new hero.

No, wait, you are.

Aw hell, I'm easy.

And we've got another batch of puppies coming through tonite! It's Puppy Grand Central at Chez Tizz.

Posted by: tizzie on August 25, 2004 07:52 PM

OK, I implemented Dana's latest suggestion. I'll look into MT-Close

Posted by: jpoulos on August 26, 2004 10:53 AM

Hmmmm....stav: I guess I was referring to Mt-Close2, which is what Dana linked above. I tried Mt-Close (the original), though, and I can't get it to work. I'm getting an Internal Server Error. The permissions are OK, and there doesn't appear to be anything to configure. I don't know. I'll keep at it.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 26, 2004 11:12 AM

By the way, John, you really know how to have a hiatus. I've tried a couple of times and I just can't match your tenacity. Bravo, sir. Bravo!

Posted by: kaf on August 26, 2004 11:26 AM

I have been in the office for three hours and I still smell like puppy spit.

You would not believe the crew we have. We always come up with temporary monikers for them, and this time it is a heavy Sopranos theme since they are gangstahs. The really itty bitty chihuahua mix we are calling Big Pussy. The two youngest, who have absolutely no scruples and climb over all the rest, are Tony and Junior. God knows their lineage - I could not guess. Perversely, we have named the all white one Sooty and the black one Snowy. There is a little red cocker spaniel who is too skinny by half and blind in one eye. We haven't named her yet. There's a brown object we've taken to calling Chocolate Biscuit, and a truly homely pit bull (god forbid) mix - Igor. Does that come to eight? Yes. *sigh*

Posted by: tizzie on August 26, 2004 11:28 AM

Hubby just sent pics. Here and here.

Posted by: tizzie on August 26, 2004 11:48 AM

jpo, I had trouble getting mt-close to work too. it was timing out. mt-close2 worked fine, though. So far, no spam. I am so happy.

I dibs Big Pussy, btw.

Posted by: dana on August 26, 2004 12:10 PM

Igor is a most excellent dog's name.

And those pictures are almost pr0n. For the heartstrings.

Posted by: Chico on August 26, 2004 12:31 PM

The hiatus is nearing an end. I just need to find a couple of days to finish the redesign. In typical me-fashion, I've also decided to chuck MT altogther and write my own content management system.

Posted by: jpoulos on August 26, 2004 02:33 PM

I'm dealing with puppy overload here. I thought my pet rabbits were cute, but that is teh ubercute. How can you stand to watch them go, tizzie?

Posted by: salmonberry on August 26, 2004 02:53 PM

Salmonberry, I'm not sure. I get really attached to them!

But do I want to be thought of as the little old lady that gets dragged out of a smelly house filled with teeming hordes of animals and surrounded by scowling neighbors?

Nah, I'd rather be thought of as "the one with the drinking problem."

Posted by: tizzie on August 26, 2004 03:05 PM

well tizzie, if I get to play with the puppies, I promise I'll make you a great enabler.

Posted by: salmonberry on August 26, 2004 03:45 PM
Why not join in and say something too?

A note about posting images:

We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found here. Thanks.
