My list is almost ready. How 'bout all you other swappers?
Posted by tizzie at February 07, 2005 08:06 AMMy draft disk is in my car CD player, being judged over a period of days for quality, style, seamlessness and danceability. Soon I will begin penning those adorable little vignettes for the tracklist that people seem to love so much, and once that's done it's burn, baby, burn.
iirc, we're supposed to start mailing Valentine's Day, correct? the changeover from hotmail to gmail, ah, realized some archival losses.

In the name of traffic safety, I have to strongly urge you not to dance in your car, sir.
Posted by: officermc on February 7, 2005 10:03 AMI promise to confine my automotive dancing to incidences of traffic-safety-minded buttwiggling, Officer.
Posted by: Fes on February 7, 2005 10:08 AMHmph. Since I missed this swap I shall just be very jealous instead.

You guys really just use the swaps to show off your indie cred, don't you?
Come on, it's all right to admit it.
Posted by: Crash on February 7, 2005 03:23 PMWell, Vidiot does, but I sure don't! My mix has Sister Sledge's "We Are Family" on it fer chrissakes!
Posted by: Fes on February 7, 2005 03:31 PMIf by "indie cred" you mean "massive collection of Paul Anka recordings", then yes. Yes, I do.
Posted by: bmarkey on February 7, 2005 03:56 PMIndie cred? Me? Pshaw.
I probably didn't buy four new CDs in 2004.
Posted by: Vidiot on February 7, 2005 04:01 PMI'm totally not posting my track list because I want it to totally be a surprise.
Totally.
Lot's of "Destiny's Child." All I'm saying.
Posted by: ColdChef on February 7, 2005 04:05 PMMy swapmix, if I were making one, would be entirely Marshall Tucker Band and Molly Hatchet.
Posted by: dana on February 7, 2005 04:32 PMThis is all purely hypothetical, though, Chico.
[Vidiot: I love Shadowy Men! Have you ever heard Crash Kills Five?]
Posted by: dana on February 7, 2005 04:43 PMNever heard of Crash Kills Five -- tell me about 'em!
Dim the lights, chill the ham, yo.
Posted by: Vidiot on February 7, 2005 04:50 PMI don't know a lot about CK5, other than the fact that they released a single, *amazing* 7-inch, and later on part of the band went on to form Shadowy Men. This is about all I can find about them. I have two of their songs, via the Hyped2Death comps. I'm on a quixotic mission to get a copy of the original record.
Workin' on the final mix of the CD. That's tonight's plan: finish it up so I can start burninatin'.
vidiot -- Those are some fine track lists y' got there.
Posted by: aine42 on February 7, 2005 06:32 PMAch. Hatchet and Marshall Tucker are yesterday's news. I'm into this Frijid Pink and Andy Pratt phase, now.
Totally different head.
Posted by: jonmc on February 7, 2005 06:41 PMActually, even though I like those two groups, y'know what I've *cough* beenobtainingthrucompletelylegalmeans *cough*?
Early 70's jazz fusion. Bitches Brew,Larry Coryell, Herbie Mann, John McLaughlin,Sonny Sharrock, Billy Cobham. I'm not sure why. I mean it sounds great, the best of it. And nobody talks about it much, so I figure the getting is good. And as a book I read once said, "whenever there's a blanket condemnation of something, there's something deeper going on."
So maybe I'm behind the curve. So far behind that I've come out the other side and I'm ahead again.
Posted by: jonmc on February 7, 2005 06:47 PMAin't no curve, jon. I always figure that if it's new to me, it counts as new. Be sure to check out Weather Report and Return To Forever while you're doing the fusion thing.
Posted by: bmarkey on February 7, 2005 07:08 PMbmarkey, what I've heard of both knocks me out even though I'm a novice. Do you have any titles of signature songs to help me in my *cough* search?
NTM, Coryell and McLaughlin's playing on "Spaces (Infinite)" is fucking amazing.
Posted by: jonmc on February 7, 2005 07:13 PMOooh, that would be casting my mind back to a time when I had many more brain cells than I do now... Weather Report did a nice cover of "Birdland", as I recall. I'm drawing a black on Return To Forever at the moment, though. Let me poke around on teh intarweb for a moment
Posted by: bmarkey on February 7, 2005 07:26 PMDon't recall the specific piece, but Romantic Warrior was definitely the album I played most often. You might also dig Jean-Luc Ponty. You might recognize the name from a few Zappa albums he played on.
Posted by: bmarkey on February 7, 2005 07:32 PM"Return to Forever" - Chick Corea.
Oh my god, how many layers of brain dust was THAT buried under? I used to listen to that album in high school with my one and only sophisticated friend.
Posted by: tizzie on February 7, 2005 07:35 PMand Mahavishnu John McLaughlin. Wow.
It's true that if you were really there, you can't remember it. Except the odd word that bubbles to the surface when you least expect it.
Posted by: tizzie on February 7, 2005 07:40 PMSome days are better than others for dredging up that sort of thing.
I was a teenage prog-fusion head. I think I might even still have a few relics from back then. I'll have a look when I get home.
Posted by: bmarkey on February 7, 2005 07:50 PMBirds of Fire and Inner Mounting Flame were almost popular music at one point. Radio was just so much more daring then - really, that's not nostalgia talking. They would play some truly eclectic stuff.
And bmarkey, if you like old Zappa, I absolutely love that jewel-encrusted shite. Bongo Fury - every weird, twisted moment is still there, somewhere. I can't hear the word "anchovies" without "George Duke," and that is really bizarre.
Posted by: tizzie on February 7, 2005 08:00 PMI bought a copy of Birds Of Fire at a yardsale after reading George Pelecanos' book King Suckerman in which the black owner of a funk record store secretly admits to his buddy that whiteboy McLaughlin is his favorite guitarist. I was not disappointed by the quality.
Coryell I looked into because, when I was 12 I took guitar lessons for five minutes, and the teacher had a poster saying "Larry Coryell does Jazz," but Coryell looked like a rocker. I didn't think of it till years later when I was hankering for something new. If you liked Mahavishnu Orchestra, Coryell is right up your alley.
Posted by: jonmc on February 7, 2005 08:05 PMI should be able to mail by Monday, but I may need an extra day or so. I don't think I've seen any addresses sent my way, and I just now blew that as the perfect excuse for my delay.
Posted by: adam on February 7, 2005 08:47 PMSo, with regard to playlists: do people want to see them beforehand? Or would y'all rather wait until all discs have been mailed?
Personally, I like surprises. Up to a point, anyway - cockroaches left in my shoes are not appreciated in the least.
Posted by: bmarkey on February 7, 2005 10:03 PM"Never heard of Crash Kills Five"
Oh, the band Crash Kills Five!
Whew.
*carefully checks the local news headlines, notes he has yet to be found out*
Posted by: Crash on February 7, 2005 10:49 PMoops, sorry bmarkey.
And if it had said "Crash Cavorts With Monkey, Shocks Millions", then we'd know it was you.
Posted by: Vidiot on February 8, 2005 12:17 PMFinished off my disks last night, so I'm hoping to send them out this week. (I'm actually early with a swap. Quick -- someone check the thermometer in hell.)
If the rest of my group would rather be surprised, I can wait to post the track list. If not, I can post it now.
Anyone not in my group who'd like a copy, lemme know and I'll send one your way.
Posted by: aine42 on February 8, 2005 12:23 PMHey, I'm good either way. Knowing what's on the disc merely builds anticpation for its arrival. (That is a mighty fine set list you've compiled, vidiot. Any chance I could get a copy of the overdue disc, too?) I was just tryin' to get a feel for concensus.
And, of course, anyone who'd like a copy of mine has but to ask. I couldn't fit everything I wanted to use on one disc, so it's a double-album extravaganza. Disc One is kinda loud & shouty, while Disc Two is more, uh, "mellow". If you have a preference, I can easily send one or the other, or both. This goes for folks in my swap group, as well.
Posted by: bmarkey on February 8, 2005 01:47 PMAnd if it had said "Crash Cavorts With Monkey, Shocks Millions", then we'd know it was you.
And if it had said "Crash Cavorts With Millions, Shocks Monkey," then we'd know that you lead a secret life as noted prog-rock singer Peter Gabriel.
Posted by: jonmc on February 8, 2005 07:35 PMMy discs is real close to bein' done. If anyone wants to see the purty cover art and track list, I stuck it over here, so you can choose if you want to know or not.
Vidiot, I am sooo, lookin' forward to that disk!
Posted by: towerbrave on February 8, 2005 07:50 PMTowerbrave's track 1 is one of my most happiest, favorite songs of all time, which - non-coincidentally - I'd never have heard if not for an old monkey swap. Such a fantastic song.
My status? Well, I've been busy, but it's looking pretty mellow for the next few nights, finally. I'll bang something out soon.
Oh, also, for my group, disregard the 2nd addy (although if stuff get sent there, I'll still get a hold of it). My damn lease doesn't run out until end of April.
Posted by: ufez on February 9, 2005 01:34 AMI've almost finalized a tracklist, it's mostly Moby remixes of Ashlee Simpson songs. Mostly. Mine will be in the mail on Monday. I'll keep the tracklist to myself until then. Needless to say, there is Hem.
Posted by: eyeballkid on February 9, 2005 03:03 AMOh, shit, eyeball, not you too!
Alright, I'll go back to Plan A, then: tissue-and-comb versions of my favorite disco hits. mmmmmmmmmmmffffffffffvvvvvfffffvvvvvvvmmmmvvvvvvvv.
Posted by: Chico on February 9, 2005 09:15 AMWow, I totally remember getting into the whole "tissue and comb" scene back in college. Luckily I went to a barber college so there was plenty of comb action. I'll take a punky indie tissue and comb garage band over some manufactured, over produced, American Idol tissue and comb pop star any day of the week. Just talking about this makes me want to break out my old issues of Maximum Tissue and Comb and reminisce.
Posted by: Slack-a-gogo on February 9, 2005 09:52 AMYeah, I remember those days. We didn't even have our own combs. We borrowed them from some other band. My first comb was a second-hand Ace with half its teeth missing.
It was Ian MacKaye who gave me that comb!
Posted by: dana on February 9, 2005 10:45 AMAh yes, I remember fondly my days playing in Barbicide, the punk tissue-and-comb pioneers. With Kleenex Razorstrap on lead comb.
Posted by: Vidiot on February 9, 2005 10:47 AMI wonder if I still have my T&C RULES OK t-shirt with the comb-devil-horns on it that I got at the Kazoozoo '87.
(Yeah, that's right, I was there. Santana, Li'l Softie, Buddy Hackett, Charmin Ghia, Hootie and the Blowfish (back when they literally blew instead of just figuratively)... shee-it. I had the best peyote high of my young life... remind me to tell all of y'all about it sometime.)
Whoa, man. Does that ever take me back.
Posted by: Chico on February 9, 2005 10:53 AMShit, dude, you were in Barbicide?
I remember seeing you guys when Simon le Bon was still your lead singer! You guys were SICK!
Posted by: Chico on February 9, 2005 10:56 AMFYI -- looks like the track list for my mix will be a surprise. I was going to post it today, but I decided it would be way more fun to break my wrist instead this morning, so I did that. Suffice it to say, I'm typing a wee bit slower than usual.
But I will post it sometime soon.
On the plus side, my cast is black, which is kind of cool.
Posted by: aine42 on February 9, 2005 07:15 PMDamn, you're still visiting the monkeyhouse with a broken wrist? That's the kind of dedication that us former members of Barbicide appreciate.
Feel better.
Or we'll all be forced to show up at your bedside for a reunion concert.
Posted by: Vidiot on February 10, 2005 09:33 AMLight, fluffy, thin layer of snow + ice underneath = hidden slippery spot on driveway on way to car. I fractured one bone, broke the other and tore a tendon. I'm very slowly learning to be a leftie. I'm terrible at it right now, but fully intend to be Queen of the Left-handed when my six weeks are up.
And thanks for the reunion concert offer, but I've been comforting myself by listening to my Barbicide bootlegs.
Posted by: aine42 on February 10, 2005 11:05 AMaine, I hope the hospital gave you some good painkillers, or at least a scantily-clad manservant to feed you grapes during you recovery.

Posted by: tizzie on February 10, 2005 09:49 PMCB Song - The Legendary Shack Shakers
Uh. Weird. I had that exact song on my shortlist for swappable tunes. Guess I'll use a different Shack Shakers song.
(oh, and tizzstress, I'll toss a copy of mine in with the other shit I have to send you. whether you want it or not)
Posted by: ufez on February 12, 2005 09:52 PMUncle Cracker? Eeeeewww . . .
On the topic of the Shack Shakers, they've been knocking around Nashville for a decade or so, and if you have the chance to see them live, do not miss it!
Posted by: mike on February 14, 2005 02:50 PMDo you hate Uncle Cracker? State why in two sentences or less.
Posted by: tizzie on February 14, 2005 03:48 PMI don't hate him.
I'm not a huge fan but "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah," was a good single. And having one good single in you is not a capital crime, and it's one more than many critical/hipster darlings have in them.
Posted by: jonmc on February 14, 2005 08:53 PMOk, dammit, I changed it. But it wasn't just because of the taunting, no. I just found something else I like better in that spot. So nyah nyah nyah.
And I'm not telling what it is.
Discs will be burned this Thursday night! Tomorrow is my drinking night, errrr, prayer meeting. OK, yoga class. That's the ticket.
Posted by: tizzie on February 15, 2005 09:39 PMIn my house, drinking is prayer. It is yoga, too, for that matter.
Booze: is there anything it can't do?
Posted by: bmarkey on February 15, 2005 09:57 PMi'm finished.
i've been sick.
post office on saturday.
mix in your hands by next week.
Any chance of a spare for a SoCal expatriate, Meester The Ball?
Posted by: kaf on February 17, 2005 12:10 PMMy mixes will be going out soon. They've been done awhile, but I was having a little trouble with the "holding a pen" thing, so I haven't been able to address them. (Yes, I'm aware they have these new-fangled "label" things you can put through the printer now, but I'm out of them and haven't been to the store.)
The delay in sending results in me finding my swapmates a swell little trinket, though, so it all works out nicely.
I'll try to get them in the mail be Monday at the latest.
Posted by: aine42 on February 17, 2005 12:34 PMExpect discs no later than June. I'm a lazy fat fuck.

Crap, crap, crap.
You know how once you FINALLY get your track lineup set you find a song that you just HAVE to include? Well, I don't have room for this one, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't share it.
For your listening pleasure:(NSFW)* Nina Gordon's cover of "Straight Outta Compton"
*Not Safe for Whitey
Posted by: ColdChef on February 18, 2005 08:40 AMCrap, crap, double crap! I feel the exact same way, because if I'd known I coulda bought the CD with this on it tomorrow, I would have added it to my discs - that I burned last night!
But, noooooooo.
So, here, for your listening pleasure, are The Screaming Mimes with "TV."
Posted by: tizzie on February 18, 2005 01:05 PMDon't question the mix. It only leads to heartbreak.

Notes
1. is a non album track. Hard to find at the moment. 2. reminds me of Romeo Void, but that's not why I like it. 4. this song is 20 years old, could have come out yesterday. 5. i like this better than the original. 6. I know. I know. I should be shot for including a band on the Garden State soundtrack in a mix. I saw them open for The Shins. They were good. The Shins? Not so much. 7. my wife said to me, "You have to listen to Mew." I did. She was right. 8. I saw Pink Martini at the Disney Opera House on New Year's Eve. This song, as I found out, is about a shopping mall. It's my favorite on their great new cd. 9. I do all of these things. This song obviously isn't about me. 14. It looks like Sony is going to keep this album shelved. Fuckers. 16. Great track from an amazing, yet-to-be-released cd. 17. The guitarist for this band had to take some time off to tour with some group called "Pixies" or some such thing. 19. Ronny James Dio sued Dios. They changed their name to Dios Malos. Fucker. 22. Awesome cover. 24. a snippet from DJ Shadow

Disks are going in the mail on the way home tonight. Yay!
Posted by: aine42 on February 25, 2005 07:39 PMI finally decided that you'd probably rather get the discs in this lifetime than have a clever cover. So they're going into the mail in the morning, in paper sleeves.
It doesn't mean I love you any less.
As a matter of fact, I'm even sending Surprise Bonus Discs! WoooHOOO!
Posted by: tizzie on February 25, 2005 09:35 PMI recieved Towerbrave's outstanding disc yesterday. It's got a slightly bent Saturday afternoon vibe to it - kinda offbeat, rootsy stuff. Very nice indeed.
Posted by: bmarkey on March 3, 2005 01:56 PMAll your discs are belong to me. I've received three in the mail, and decided that mine sucks. So there's some tweaking. After that tweaking, there's the burning, and then the posting. I know you are all deeply concerned. Deeply.
Posted by: mikro on March 11, 2005 05:24 PMBurned. Awaiting the printing of the sleeves. Taking a page from the McSweeney's crowd, I'm having the CD sleeves printed in Iceland for no reason. Take that, Eggers.
Posted by: ColdChef on March 11, 2005 05:46 PMI don't care about that - Did You Like Mine??? C'mon, validate me!!
Posted by: tizzie on March 11, 2005 08:34 PMCDs burned, labelled, and mailed. And may god have mercy on your souls.
Posted by: ColdChef on March 14, 2005 02:33 PMI'll be posting reviews of the ones I've received soon. Hey, maybe someone should start a new "review" thread. Someone smarter than me.
Which means pretty much anyone.
Posted by: ColdChef on March 14, 2005 02:36 PMI have, this very day, recieved le disque du Chef Froid. Haven't had a chance to give it a spin yet, but that Icelandic printing sure payed off.
Posted by: bmarkey on March 16, 2005 08:16 PMHeh, awesome! Yes, I love the whole CD. Heard you live on WNKU, and bought it at Phil's Records in Latonia. Thanks for stopping by the Monkeyhouse!
