November 28, 2005 : A Contest

As well as the 9622.net site design has served us, many of us agree that it's time for a change.

To that end, unless there are howls of objection, I hereby announce the 9622.net Monkey-See Monkey-Do Monkey-Redesign-A-Website Contest

Here's how it will work:

1. The contest is open to all primates.
2. Judging will be conducted via online poll, and the identities of the designers will be kept anonymous.
3. I will contribute a $25 Amazon gift certificate to the winner. (Other incentive donations are welcome.)

I'm thinking a 12/10 deadline for submission, with judging to begin 12/12 and end 12/16. That way we can get it in place for January 1. New year, new beginning, and all that. But deadlines are up for discussion.

RULES
-----
1. Initial designs need not be coded in HTML--a "picture" of the design done in Photoshop, etc, is enough to vote on. But...
2. ...the winner must do the HTML coding her/himself before launch.
3. The design must be compatible with MovableType 3.x.
4. All artwork must be the designer's own original work, or royalty free.
5. To enter, send me a link to the design (blogflicker AT-SYMBOL gmail).

DON'T ANNOUNCE ITS LOCATION HERE. In the interest of fairness, I think we really need to keep these anonymous until the winner is announced.

Any questions, thoughts or suggestions?

People have said these things about that :

How do you feel about designs with blinking, scrolling marquees? In Comic Sans?

Posted by: dana on November 28, 2005 01:52 PM

I once had a nightmare that Comic Sans was chasing me down a dark hallway. And all the doors were locked.

*shudder*

Posted by: jpoulos on November 28, 2005 01:56 PM

That sounds complicated. Let's just nuke the site from space.

Posted by: ColdChef on November 28, 2005 04:11 PM

It's the only way to be sure.

Posted by: Crash on November 28, 2005 05:30 PM

But first, let's have sex with it.

I don't know nothin' about birthin' no websites.

Posted by: tizzie on November 28, 2005 09:18 PM

Can we get a "Boobies" tag?

Posted by: Fes on November 29, 2005 02:01 PM

Now that's a fantastic idea. I'm thinking of using it in the "Posted by" line:

Of this I heartily approve. This layout wasn't meant to last anywhere *near* this long!

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on December 1, 2005 07:32 AM

Wha? I say I say I say... wha?

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on December 1, 2005 07:33 AM

Damn it! Where have my sweet, delicious comments gone? I want them to sing to me as I read them, in angelic counterpoint with little harpsichordy sounds, by christ and by crikey!

Posted by: stavrosthewonderchicken on December 1, 2005 07:34 AM

for those interested in using Bingo the Bad Habits Monkey, I can prolly make the orginal files (smoking and smiling, smoking w/martini and questionable other hand placement) available. (if I can find em-- it was a few computers ago)

Posted by: tj on December 1, 2005 05:26 PM

Is anyone going to try their hand at this?

Posted by: jpoulos on December 3, 2005 12:11 PM

I was all set to take a crash course in website design, and then I realized that the prize was not a date with you, Lupo. I'm not putting in the effort if there's no hot monkey sex involved. Sorry.

I planet a seed of the apes in my yard - hope to see the new site this spring.

Testing for boobies tag...testing...testing

Posted by: witchstone on December 8, 2005 10:46 PM

I know nothing about web design but everything about judging other people, so I say: go for it!

Posted by: witchstone on December 8, 2005 10:47 PM

Well, the deadline has come and gone and we plenty o' nuthin'. Someone bang that gong and break out the big hook on this one. (I'm as guilty as anyone. I never came up with a design either.)

Let's not let a lack of site design proposals ruin our little contest, though. Instead, let's judges each other's sexual peccadillos. Who's first?

Posted by: jpoulos on December 12, 2005 11:09 AM

Sex with an armadillo? Sure, we've all done that.

Posted by: ColdChef on December 12, 2005 06:34 PM

Sex with an armored dildo?

Posted by: tizzie on December 12, 2005 08:21 PM

Once again, Miss Tizzie out "Nasty"s me. I bow before her majesty.

Posted by: ColdChef on December 12, 2005 08:42 PM

Shoot. And I was ALMOST done with my design, too. I just had to learn HTML coding and I would have been so there.

So, can I have the gift certificate, anyway? It would have looked real nice, with lots of animated monkeys doing nasty things over and over and over again and scrolling up and down the page. And blinking.

I think that's worth a lousy 25 bucks.

Listen, I've been working on my design for the Victorious Army Group. They've extended their deadline, so I don't know why you can't extend this one.

Do you think it's easy designing a site "worthy of the group's reputation and the reputation of the jihad and the mujahedeen," PLUS making it web standards-compliant?

Posted by: dana on December 13, 2005 10:04 AM

"The winner is promised 'Bingo the Bad Habit Monkey's blessings' and the opportunity to fire their feces at a Mefi member of his/her choice."

Posted by: jpoulos on December 13, 2005 10:48 AM

Oh, and all I want for Christmas is a set of "instant" bootlegs from a bunch of 50 year old Goth Rockers.

Posted by: jpoulos on December 13, 2005 10:51 AM

May the Bingo of Jihad shine upon you, and may the nastiness of my majesty light up your night.

Or something like that.

Why not join in and say something too?

A note about posting images:

We encourage users to post images, especially those hilarous pics of monkeys wearing dresses or programming for Linux. But posting images that reside on someone else's server is considered by many to be bandwidth theft. Our thoughts on the matter, along with some solutions to the problem, can be found here. Thanks.
