December 21, 2005 : The Good Thing About Being Unemployed

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
The transit strike is just part of my vacation.

On another vacation note, what's everyone doing for the holidays? I'm going to Hawaii for the first time. And spending 8 days with my entire family (15 people and counting). I haven't spent that much time with my family in probably over a decade. Will we all survive intact? Only time will tell.

Posted by witchstone at December 21, 2005 12:48 PM

People have said these things about that :

I'm with you on that, witchy. After all the shit I've been through, this year, I refuse to put yself through that hell just for my stupid job. But that's just me.

Also, An Evening With Wild Man Fischer is available for download (in full) at PCI Linkdump. And that should be enough to make any reasonable person happy.

I'm doing the homophobic-antisemitic-extended-family thing (again) then I'll probably either:

a) enjoy a late dinner with my best friends (who are, fancy that, lesbian jews) or

b) climb a bell tower somewhere...

Posted by: jpoulos on December 21, 2005 01:27 PM

Going to Napa Friday for wining, to sister's Saturday, mother-in-law's Sunday, finally having our own xmas on the 26th or 27th, and then hosting a New Year's eve party. Along the way I will indulge in my Christmas traditions of playing nine-ball with my best friend on Christmas Eve and watching Phantasm with my family Christmas night.

Posted by: kaf on December 21, 2005 01:32 PM

jeebus, jon. you had a kidney stone. you make it sound like this was the Year My Family Was Killed by Packs of Wild Possums, or something.

Posted by: jpoulos on December 21, 2005 01:36 PM

(Um...your family wasn't killed by possums, was it? Cuz if it was, I'm gonna feel like an asshole.)

Posted by: jpoulos on December 21, 2005 01:37 PM

Actually, I quite enjoyed my walk today. But going home in the dark, carrying Xmas presents, will be less fun.

My company's strike contingency plan was "Make sure you get to work on time." And, liking groceries, I complied.

Posted by: Vidiot on December 21, 2005 02:01 PM

Not possums, poulos, BEAVERS! Hordes and Hordes of Dam-Building Beasts!

I kid.

There was a lot of other money and other work related woes (too complex to go into) that occupied the last half of these year, so that's why I'm in no mood to bust my ass for those people.

Posted by: jonmc on December 21, 2005 02:13 PM

There are so many asses out there; why bust your own?

Posted by: kaf on December 21, 2005 05:28 PM

Master Po said that to Kwai Chang once as they dallied in the garden.

Posted by: kaf on December 21, 2005 05:29 PM

Why bust an ass when you can tap it?

Posted by: witchstone on December 21, 2005 05:40 PM

Master Ron Jeremy said that to his DOP one day on set, as he lolled about on his fake bed.

Posted by: witchstone on December 21, 2005 05:43 PM

I'm going to actually bite the bullet and attempt to walk over the hills and through the projects across the bridge and downtown to work tommorrow. If I die en route, make me a nice memorial, willya?

Posted by: jonmc on December 21, 2005 06:05 PM

Is there really no other way to get into town? Are the ferries and the trains affected by the strike too? I guess the ferries only work for Staten Island?

What about bikes? Unicycles? A brace of strapping lads to bear you in a litter?

Posted by: kaf on December 21, 2005 06:41 PM

How was San Diego, anyway, Witchstone? Did you learn lots of stuff? Did you have fabulous exploits? Are you writing a book?

Posted by: kaf on December 21, 2005 06:51 PM

There's a water taxi down in Long Island City. According to mapquest that's a 3 1/2 mile walk from my house. That'll get me across the river, but it lets me out on the east side at 34th street. I work on the West Side about 40-some-odd blocks downtown. I might just walk to Queensboro Plaza and try to share a cab across the bridge with somebody, since according to mapquest the total distance from Mc Central to the Job is 8.something miles. I'm mainly doing this just to show the employesr that I made the effort.

I don't own a bicycle or a unicycle and while there's plenty of strapping young lads around, most of them in these parts are more likely to turn you into litter rather than bear you on one.

Posted by: jonmc on December 21, 2005 08:13 PM

Vidiot's photos of his walk to work made the whole ordeal look quite charming. And I'm sure it would be - once. After the first time, not so much. If it rained, not-at-freaking-all.

Posted by: tizzie on December 21, 2005 08:20 PM

San Diego was great in a lot of ways and terrible in others. I guess that's about par for the course for graduate school.
I did manage to finally make it to the Casbah in my last month of living there. It was the one bar I'd heard of before I moved there and it took me over 2 years to get there.
Although the weather in NYC sucks right now, I am happy to be back in my city. San Diego is a little too comfortable. I could see myself avoiding life very nicely there for a long time. So, I threw myself back into survivor land.
And a shoutout to jpoulos for visiting me while I was there.
Can you believe it's been 2 1/2 years since I was a regular monkey?

Posted by: witchstone on December 21, 2005 08:41 PM

Two and and half years, and not regular? Man, that's no good. Monkeys gotta POOP.

Posted by: yhbc on December 21, 2005 10:04 PM

You must be flummoxed by all the changes that have taken place in two and a half years, eh Witchy?

Posted by: Fes on December 21, 2005 10:59 PM

I mean here, not with, you know, life and stuff.

Posted by: Fes on December 21, 2005 10:59 PM

Ugh - I was originally planning on going to my favorite establishment's Xmas party tonight, but my partner in crime is in surgery right now to put her elbow back together. (I told her not to wear figure skates- stupid toe pick).

So it looks like I'm finishing my christmas shopping up tonight then retiring for a night of video games instead of shenanigans.

Other than that- I'm looking forward to a long weekend and not thinking about work for a little bit.

Posted by: tayhota on December 22, 2005 04:00 PM

hah, just realized how depressing that sounds (almost like it should have the sad Charlie Brown Christmas music behind it)

Posted by: tayhota on December 22, 2005 04:02 PM

Skelly?

Posted by: Fes on December 23, 2005 01:05 AM
