Just How Long Is Our Mailing List?

I'd just posted a link from Bifurcated Rivets, when I came across this little Flash animation. It seems only yesterday we started this little party and already everyone is jumping on the monkey wagon.

QUESTION

How pleased am I that anti.com is streaming the two new Tom Waits albums?

Answer: a lot.

Almost as much as the music, though, I'm intrigued by the cover art. Waits has always valued the art in which his work came packaged, but these two releases in particular make me miss the glory of a 12" record sleeve. I may buy them on vinyl just to hang on my wall.

We're Not Alone In Loving Monkeys

Although others may be quite sniffy about it. Multiculturalism at its best. A friend of mine, a famous Portuguese poet(who happens to be gay) thought for years that his favourite Henry James story was "The Best in the Jungle", until someone told him it was "The Beast in the Jungle". I was there when he was corrected and he said: "Oh, what's the difference?!".

P.S. Is it my impression or is there something slightly narcissistic, Louis XVI-like, about checking the "allow comments" box? It's the "allow" that kills me. It sort of sounds like "ok, ok, let the proles in; let them have their say; God knows their lives are miserable enough as it is."

the horror ... the horror ...

Knock it off with all the crab references. Apparently, they kill monkeys, at least if bizarre Japanese children's stories are to be believed.

and I DO believe in spooks I DO, I DO, I DO believe in spooks ...

Today's pointless origami monkey attempt

POST NUKE

Does anyone know anything about PostNuke, the open source weblog/content management software package?

A buddy here at work just switched over to it, and it looks great. I'm going to play with it this weekend, and maybe do the blogfucker site with it instead of Movable Type. But if anyone has experience with it, I'd love to hear about it.

PUNK KIDS MUST DIE

So I've just wasted the last 2 hours playing this damn spearchucking game that Brother Kaf posted on his blog. I was determined to make the high-score list which, when I started, ranged between 534.4 and 538.6 points (meters?). I hit 533.5 a few times and 534.0 twice. I was almost there.

All of a sudden, some pimple-faced punk-ass must have hacked the freakin' thing, cuz the high-score list only showed one name, with scores ranging from 576 to 621! I hate kids.

No antagonism!

Hey, maybe quit antagonising Rodii about thread banter?

The reason we made this place was to minimize that very thing, but it doesn't give us the right to tell others what to do.

Sorry. Don't mean to get preachy, but the last thing I want to see is any sort of ganging up.

I know you were just kidding, but many probably wouldn't see it that way.

Welcome to Monkey Island

And so it begins....

Let me just say right off the bat that Movable Type is the best blog app around. I had already installed it for my own site, and since 9622 is sharing that server, all I had to do was create a new blog and a new user. It took all of 20 minutes. Tell your family and friends.

I'm going to try to import the posts from 9622.blogspot in a little while. I'll be in touch with admins ASAP to explain how this will work.

This is gonna be fun...

OK, here's the deal on the color scheme that i kinda threw up with no regard to anyone other than myself... I figured it would be a temporary thing. to sort of ease everyone into this experiment. And, it was about 4 in the morning here. I got something super secret in the works and I'll let y'all know when its ready.

Miguel. There are some on

Miguel. There are some on your list I would definitely not invite. Obviously, this is a public site, so I am not going to name names. I guess i can email the core of people here and be more specific.

I kind of started with the base people, and others that want to join can mail and ask. A lot of the people that you named, Miguel, never participated in 9622 anyway, so I'm not sure how they would really like the vibe here.

And I think discretion is the better part of valor, as jp put it.

Votes: 1. On design, yes

Votes:

1. On design, yes to MeFi color accents, to visually express that it is a MeFi offshoot, but no to the complete package. It needs to be different enough to be recognizably a "different thing" but similar enough to be clear where it came from. Got that, designer-types?

2. Since I already got invited (thanks again, Kafkaesque) only let anyone else in on six personal recommendations and a pledge of their first-born child. Seriously, I think a membership screening committee of the five admins can vote on anyone else to invite.

3. No on any further "signposts" on MeFi or MeTa proper. Kafkaesque's grand announcement on 9622 is enough, and worked beautifully.

4. Yes on expelling Miguel. He chats too much.

KIDDING!

Posted by yhbc at 10:22 AM
I'd like to cast my

I'd like to cast my vote that this be "elitist, invite-only, Alabama country-club" type of site. Seriously (or rather, euphemistically) I think we should be cautious about who we let in. Establish a clandestine "moderators" committee. Have secret ballots to determine new members. Elect a Grand Poo-Bah. Work under the cover of bogus corporations in the Cayman Islands to bring down third-world governments. The works.

Oh, and Thursday nights are Ice Cream Nights.

I'll get to work on a design, since it will give me yet another excuse to postpone the relaunch of blogfucker.com. I hope others will too, so we can have a right proper vote.

Posted by jpoulos at 10:07 AM
It's cool how you can

It's cool how you can check out the latest post before it's been published.

I was thinking of ways we could use the small scale to our advantage. One would be to have links to people's blogs. For instance, I've always wanted to comment on K's blog - I now understand all those Clamato references - but there isn't a button there. Another would be to link to stuff we find interesting, in a casual, for-reading or for-fun way, with no threads. Music is an obvious common interest as there's overlap with the CD swappage. Perhaps a less taxing book club. Monkeys, of course. What about gorgeous women? For rating purposes only.

There's so much that doesn't fit in at MetaFilter, that would be selfish and cliquey to post there. Call me an optimist but I think K's idea will actually improve MetaFilter. the basic desire there to find out how you all are and read you is satisfied here, so banter is greatly reduced. And it must have been very irritating for others.

Meanwhile, I'm having trouble with ColdChef's e-mail address to. Should I look up that fancy-sounding surname of his? Or just send him a proper letter?

Perhaps it would be easier to ask Matt if it would be OK to post a simple comment on 9622 informing those who are interested of this weblog. I don't think we need a lot of people to attain critical mass - 20 regulars is ideal - but I agree with K that it would defeat the purpose of 9622 to make anyone interested feel left out.

Or a message left on 1142.net?

Just thinking aloud.

I'm assuming, of course, that this free blogger.com page can handle that many people.

It's all very exciting; that's for sure. Please don't expel me, you guys!

I refrained from reading the

I refrained from reading the Left-Eye thread, as I don't really know dick about TLC. Alls I know is that I don't get it on cable anymore, and I have to get the digital package if I want to watch junkyard wars. How's that for being out of touch?

But if there's a band called TLC and one of them is monocular and now deceased, then...umm... that's it really.

And to continue the inaugural flame-war, monsieur Poulos, you can go take a flying fuck at the moooooon, you stroker of clam nether regions, you.

Here's how I feel about

Here's how I feel about the color scheme: I think the accents of the MeFi colors would be a nice touch, but the exact same, like we have now, is a little much. Like I said before, why don't some people better at design than me have a go, and we'll vote on the designs?

As far as the invite thing, I think the dilemma is a microcosm of what Mathowie must have gone through. In theory, I want a place where everyone can hang out and talk about whatever the hell they want to, but realistically, there are a few of us that made this place...

I don't know.

Posted by kafkaesque at 09:39 AM

er...i mean "bottom-up works for me, if that's the consensus."

And, FYI kafkaesque, I happen to hold clams and clam by-products very close to my heart. The way you diss clams is dispicable. It sounds like the "Left Eye" Lopez thread in here. <---- (first flame of the new site)

Sorry about the "we". It's

Sorry about the "we". It's a Portuguese thing - it means "one"(third person)rather than the second person plural. So in English I never know how to say "one" as "one" sounds like feckin' Prince Charles, even more than the royal "we".

I agree it should be open to anyone who wants to join - but how would they know about 9622? Can I invite some of the members I like? You see, I feel like a guest. As I was a guest on 9622. So I'd prefer to leave it to you guys, as I'm afraid my excessive matiness might attract people the others don't like.

Posted by at 09:16 AM
Top-down works for me, if

Top-down works for me, if that's the consensus.

One small point--just thrown out there: I'm kinda torn about the mefi color scheme. While it certainly is comforting to be Back In Blue, part of me thinks we need to forge our own identity. Plus, it would be nice if, when my boss walks by, he'd think I was wasting time on a site that wasn't Mefi, for a change.

I've emailed Matt about archiving the threads.

I was going to email you today, k, and ask you to invite pikachulolita. She's a monkey-lover fer shur.

Posted by jpoulos at 09:13 AM
Top-down would make this 9622

Top-down would make this 9622 read more like the other 9622, but it would start causing problems when the blog gets archived. Each week there would be a different post on "top" of the thread, since blogger only shows one week of posts at a time.

Miguel, when do you sleep?

Both scrolling methoda have their merits I think, jp. I have often thought the same thing about my own blog, though. Like, I'm talking about something here that's off the bottom of the screen now...is everyone getting all confused?

And who the hell cares about clams anyway?

I emailed Matt to tell him about the MeFi theme over here and make sure that it was OK with him. Jp, if you want to ask him about putting a copy of 9622 on someone's server, that's probably a good idea.

I invited the Chef, but I think there maybe some sort of email problem going on. He seemed to want to join up, though.

As far as haikus go, let's include 11629 in here as far as I'm concerned.

And my MeTa post was what I really meant. I hate pissing people off. And I have felt more and more as if some of the veterans thought some of the jesting amoutned to peeing in their pool. Again, Miguel I would warn you against an exclusionary "we". Anybody who wants to can mail me and join up (except for a couple of people that I was discussing with Dong Resin, but we won't get into that here.) I figured the best thing to do would be to give the more vocal 9622ers the admin privileges and allow other people to join and post.

Of course, only 1 person has actually emailed asking to join (pikachulolita). I am going to invite her.

I'd prefer top-down too. Don't know where I got that habit.

John: that would be great, if only for all those valuable links *cough* pictures. The haiku thread should be preserved too. They would add ambiance and provide refreshment. I'll be sending ColdChef a weepy Alamo-type e-mail today. This is not as high-maintenance as MetaFilter so he might be able to swing it; let's hope.

What do others think about

What do others think about the way this page scrolls? I think I prefer a top-down approach to the bottom-up that we have now. Or maybe I just need to get used to it. Those who blog regularly probably feel more comfortable doing things this way. Thoughts?

Miguel: It's so very nice to share this space with you, my friend. To answer your question: linking to the mefi thread would tap its resources. But if we took the thread as it appears now and put it on one of our own servers, as a sort of historical document, it wouldn't. I'll be glad to put it on one of my sites, if people think it's worth it. I should probably ask Matt if that's kosher.

Also, would someone please hop on over to Austin, grab ColdChef by the short hairs and drag him over here? Where the hell has he been?

Hey tj, you heart-gladdener, you!

Hey tj, you heart-gladdener, you! I was on the mefi irc and insomnyuk told us about the Ann Arbor tête-à-tête *cue Bill Withers* , just the two of you. He forever confirmed you as a "really nice guy". Doesn't get any more chatty than this, does it? Can I put these letters after your name then, English-style? T.J.Craddock, RNG. People will think it's Royal Navy G????? something. And forget the cd! I was just searching for an alternative to "old reliable" so you don't keep asking me what that was all about.

I love the way this is a lot like MetaFilter, tag-wise. I'll now try to make a link. There's a bit of a contest to get the last comment on the mother thread - Mummy! Here's the monkey bridge Kafkaesque bravely built. Though I don't think Matt will close it down. He'd have done that before and it's not like someone misbehaved there.

Now for a stupid question: if we link to it from here, is it still bandwidth-sucking?

I agree with dong that we should post some sort of cryptic monkey bridge and not go about inviting any outsiders, hee hee. We don't want the character of 9622 changed. Let this grow naturally or forever bloom in all its tropical, misty atmosphere.

Yay!

John Sullivan's tirade that eyeballkid

John Sullivan's tirade that eyeballkid linked to illustrates a simple point, which I've been not making all along, since never.
Everyone has their own little idea of what something so interactive as MetaFilter should be, and whenever it veers away from that, they moan and whine like 12-year old hookers who want their pop-tarts at the end of a busy night.
Look, I'm not made of money, you bitches. I can't just be "Mr. Pop-Tart" simply because you did me a Blumpkin and feel all dirty, and now want to escape to when you were six and didn't know what a Blumpkin tastes like. Just back off. Daddy's broke.
What was I saying?
Right, how everyone else sucks because they all want things their way, and not like I want things, which is the right way : less self-centered.
When it doesn't go their way, they blame someone. They just loooove to pass judgement, those total dicks.

I'm starting to realize that

I'm starting to realize that I don't care much that we've been warned out of the cult threads. I totally understand Matt's, Skalla's and even rodii's complaints. But, on the other hand, I wish I could just recycle everything that kafka said (hey k, can I be your groupie?) about the site's evolution and pretend that I said it myself. I can boil it down to this, we were just having harmless fun.

The only thing I disagree with, having been lurking long before I ever wanted to sign up, is that the site has changed. I don't think it has. I think that with most of the regulars moving into MeTa, forcing a community to navel gaze with no less than three posts a day questioning community standards and rules, we suddenly had our own corral to meet and gunfight in. Then sides were chosen and very faint lines were drawn in the sand. Then the dashing Portuguese stranger came town and scared the locals. And those lines became gorges and now canyons. The stranger decided that it wasn't worth it to stay, but then heard the calls from those of us on the other side of the divide. Some people weren't sure about him (1,2)[i don't mean to single out y6,he's a cool guy, it's just that his posts prove my point]. And today's blowup at the Haughey Corral shows that this divide can't really be worked around. For what it's worth, I think that the site is a better place for Miguel. But Cardoso, my pal, to me you post quality, but for those who don't think so, you really can see how they'd be a little peeved at the quantity, can't you? No? Yeah, me neither. Fuck 'em.

It also seems that folks have gotten a bit hotter around the collar now. I know I've had my share of moments (*pauses to imagine settle's fat, scrawny, goth, punk, whatever neck snapping in his hands*), but I think that I'm dropping my MeFi cop badge. I'm also starting to see that many of the posters I like on the site are on the invite list here. At least I know we're not going to tear each other to shreds. Though that'd be fun. It'd add to my growing collection of ears from bar fights.

I'm not leaving MeFi myself. I am just saving the cult thread attitude for this page. MeTa, however, I'm going to do my best to just ignore. To me it's no less antagonistic than a Palestine v. Israel thread.

By the way, while I was writing this, the page went from a bright white to a homely blue. Thanks tj.

Oh, and don't defend rodii... that bastard talked me into having MeFi MI in Ann Arbor (an hour's drive) and didn't show up.

Well, Miguel, Skallas and myself

Well, Miguel, Skallas and myself can't both be too sexy for Metafilter, seeing as there has to be one standard by which to gauge these things, so I guess he losses out, there.
As for the running commentary idea, my original thought was to post a link to this site from the end of the 'cult' threads, since this seemed to be an extension of that, and would probably have the same sort of people trickle in as did find their way to those threads. Skallas's idea would open this site up to a larger, less select usership. Either way is fine with me, seeing as I (in answer to a sociological query posted at this site's inception) type mostly to amuse myself.
The real question is, what do we want to read, here?

Posted by dong resin at 11:59 PM
Dong: it was respect in

Dong: it was respect in the sense of "since you can't help the way you are, I accept you". That was the brilliant part. Like respecting the silent Cosmos or rabbits' habits or standing up for wheelchair ramps no matter how good a sprinter you are. It makes sense. MetaFilter was set up by and for admirable, educated webbies. Matt Haughey is that rare thing: a geek who loves reading, writing, photography and current events. The Mattfilter brought a lot of very diverse people in. I mean I'm an old Portuguese writer, on the antipodes of the 17-year-old Californian wannabe web designer but Matt's wide interests and tolerance(finally I'm free to ass-lick!)brought yje likes of me together with the likes of him.

Anyway, good old Mike Skallas, who we should amiably and respectfully invite, has just made a wonderful post in that Meta thread. I put it to K's consideration we should take up his suggestion right here. Instead of being just a 9622 extension, why shouldn't it be the "MeTalk" his typo invites? Sort of a running commentary on MetaFilter and MetaTalk, our common link? As I haven't yet mastered the linking mechanism here - much less the image-posting - here's his inspiring post:

"Miguel, I'm being completely serious. From what I can tell from others, including myself, the typical behavoir is to check out metafilter, post on all the threads you're interested in. Mosey on over to metatalk, post on threads you're interested in and then idle hands start doing the devil's work. Why not run a baby metafilter just for general bullshit? Here's what I'm thinking. I'm not sure if its already been done so apologies in advanced if I'm ripping anyone off:

1. Allow unlimited posting and comments using the same username you have here.

2. No rules, just free for all fun. Kind of like the discussions in filepile minus the [good] [bad] tags.

3. Make it truly meta. Post what you feel. "Is skallas too sexy for metafilter?" "Holy crap did today's batch of posts suck ass." "Anyone know where I can get a cheap 19" monitor?" "I have a few naked pictures of Iconomy, wanna see?" etc. I guess generally stuff that's really not appropriate for metalk, but something that others might want to chime in on.

Go crazy with it. It wouldn't be too hard to implement and it would take the strain off from the ancient cult threads. Heck you can probably run it for next to nothing using weblog software with a built in commenting system.

What do you all think?

Wow - K just weighed

Wow - K just weighed in and steam-rolled the opposition in the best way, by respecting it. I think he's absolutely right. But I agree with dong_resin that there's a moral issue here. I'm unable to be funny and witty in the way you guys are, but I think MetaFilter does risk becoming dour and geeky. We should hang in there - we do love the place. And not be cowered. Matt is a very intelligent man and he hasn't been at all critical of our existence - only of our excesses. Quite rightly. K's brilliant idea to syphon off - and liberate - our excessive high spirits(that rare and wonderful thing)via our own web site is just the ticket. Sort of like "haven't lost a daughter, but gained a son-in-law". Except, in 9622's case, we've definitely gained a daughter.

About the beer - what about an alcohol swap next time? I mean cds are all very well, but a bottle of something really says something.

I also just discovered the MeTa thread that was our genesis. I'm more than happy to be here. I never quite realized how much people actually noticed our little love-fest. Some of them are just being humorless fucks, but I know we never had any intention to strain MeFi's resources or Matt's patience. Rodii called it like he saw it, with due (if exasperated) respect. He's one of the good guys. The Mighty Mig needs to get his cult-novel-writing ass over here with the rest of the lower primates. It's all good, baby.

I don't believe that haiku

I don't believe that haiku cramming is necessary, this is 9622.blogspot.com, not 11629.blogspot.com. Had it been 11629.blogspot.com you, donger, would have been in violation and been in for the same senseless beating that other members of the community seem to feel when they see a cult thread and are way too frightened to participate. And just to make sure that my first post to this landmark site isn't all hostile towards those that choose to persecute us for our hot monkey love: here's the beginning of a beautiful romance.

(actually, for what it's worth, I am inclined to agree with Matt about the kind of weight that the cult threads generate on the server. a 30+ second query run a couple hundred times a day must just bog the shit outta little blue server)

Er, stress the "imagined", as

Er, stress the "imagined", as in what Rodii seems to have going on in his head regarding the exclusive nature of the "cliques" at Metafilter. He seems to feel left out, something I don't understand, given the almost ridiculously welcoming nature of anyone I've encountered at MeFi. Not that Rodii is alone in this, but it seems to be a re-occurring theme with him, particularly in regard to goneill. I don't want to mock Rodii specifically or be exclusive to anyone, (I am fond of him as well), but the mayrterdom on display at the metatalk thread that spawned this could use a a little mocking in some form. Made me all queasy. Aren't most of these people in their late twenties, early thirties? Older? Jeez.

Hmmm. I maybe think I'm venting steam that should go elsewhere.

Good lord, I don't have try to cram that into a haiku, do I ?
Frankly, I'm not that bright.

I may have to bow

I may have to bow to superior web knowledge on that one. I managed to get the header thingy (sorry if my web-guy banter is confusing for you) to #006699, but I am loath to mess with it too much more, for fear it will burst like an unfortunate egg yolk that ruins the rest of your Sunday.

And I certainly don't want any exclusion or elitism. I dig rodii. And I think he's probably right. Let's just keep our monkeys in this basket here.
