Now that I've gotten some swap discs from you all and have an idea of what most of the monkey musical tastes are like, I think it's time for a list of Desert Island Discs. If you don't know the DID rules, they are as easy as this: 10 cds you can't live without. That's all, that's it. Mine will be on its way shorty.
And yes, I did mean to call you "shorty."
Posted by eyeballkid at August 14, 2002 08:23 PMSee, this changes from week to week. Or, if you are talking about 10 CDs, you are talking month to month. I'll put up a list shortly, though...is this for life? For a month? For six months? Am I asking too many questions? I have played this, and my interrogators asked what 5 disks I would have in case I was on a desert island...you are most generous, Mr. eyeball! You allow us 10!
Posted by: adampsyche at August 14, 2002 08:46 PMdude, awesome topic!
(in no exact order)
1. radiohead, ok computer
2. paul simon, graceland
3. neutral milk hotel, aeroplane over the sea
4. wilco, yankee hotel foxtrot
5. flaming lips, the soft bulletin (or possibly yoshimi battles the pink robots - just got it yesterday so i'm not totally sure which one is better)
6. eminem, marshall mathers lp
7. joni mitchell, blue
8. weezer, pinkerton
9. blur, the great escape
10. modest mouse - the moon & antarctica
I don't have any CDs yet, other than monkey mixes. (I'm waiting to see if they're going to stick around or just be a flash in the pan, like DAT was.)
This list of cassette tapes goes to eleven:
Couldn't Stand the Weather - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Violator - Depeche Mode
Mechanical Resonance - Tesla
Pulp Fiction Soundtrack - Various Artists
Strong Persuader - Robert Cray
Appetite for Destruction - Guns'n'Roses
Metallica (the Black Album) - Metallica
Indigo Girls - Indigo Girls
The Wall - Pink Floyd
Abbey Road - Beatles
Lullabys Legends and Lies - Bobby Bare
Enya's greatest hits, 2nd album put out by Delirious, 2 CDs by Eden's Bridge,Ramsie Shick's live cd...and a few more you never heard of.(not that I expect you have heard of any of this besides Enya.(Something by Vangelis might be nice.)
Posted by: b****fire at August 14, 2002 09:02 PMIn no order for me, too:
i. Songs:Ohia - Axxess & Ace
ii. Cat Power - Moon Pix
iii. The Beatles - The Beatles [White Album]
iv. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
v. Radiohead - Kid A
vi. Gomez - Bring it On
vii. REM - Automatic for the People
viii. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
ix. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
and, on a whim,
x. Tom Waits - Alice
I can appreciate the Modest Mouse, Weezer, Joni Mitchell and Wilco sollections, pikachulolita, but the Eminem, I'm afraid, opposes the very core of my being.
Posted by: Marquis at August 14, 2002 09:03 PMActually, I gotta nix a couple things on that list; we need Getz/Gilberto and the Rostroprovich recording of Bach's cello suites.
Posted by: Marquis at August 14, 2002 09:04 PMMan, I always change my mind on these from week to week; if I were stranded today, the list would be:
I picked 15, and you'll just have to deal with it.
Lou Reed - New York
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
David Byrne - David Byrne
Replacements - Tim
Prince - The Hits/B-Sides (yeah, three discs, i'm cheating)
Elvis Presley - The King of Rock 'N' Roll: The Complete 50s Masters (Obviously cheating again. Bite me.)
The Orb - The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld
Aimee Mann - Whatever
Massive Attack - Protection
James Brown - 20 All-Time Greatest Hits
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville
Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
Orbital - In-Sides
Ani Difranco - Not a Pretty Girl
Miles Davis - Porgy & Bess
aw shit. I would need REM's Murmur too. So 16.
Posted by: jpoulos at August 14, 2002 09:30 PMoooooo goddamn you, poulos! i forgot about exile in guyville!
Posted by: pikachu lolita at August 14, 2002 09:31 PMWarning: I am a good swimmer and would go back for more.
The soundtrack to Oh Brother Where Art Thou
The Beatles White Album
Elvis Costello Brutal Youth
Ella Fitzgerald Cole Porter Songbook
Over the Rhine Films for Radio
Liz Phair Exile in Guyville
Patsy Cline Heartaches
Hot Tuna Hot Tuna
Paul Simon Graceland
Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
10. X - Under the Big Black Sun
Reminds me of L.A., a city I hate and love dearly.
9. Ben Fold Five - Ben Folds Five
Reminds me of my wife, who I love dearly.
8. Moondance - Van Morrison
My favorite Van Morrison.
7. The Very Best of - The Pogues
I can't choose one Pogues album because any with Shane are amazing. This one has Rainy Night in Soho from the impossible to find (and stolen a few years ago from my car), Poguetry in Motion.
6. Source Tags and Codes - And you will know us by the trail of dead
The only recent entry on the list, edging out TMC's Filigree and Shadow. This album is everything I could ever want. Too bad the band is a bunch of egotistical fuckheads.
5. Blues and Roots - Charles Mingus
[deleted]
4. 24hr Revenge Therapy - Jawbreaker
Jawbreaker is the music I turn to when things aren't going my way and I need to listen to someone who shares my pessimistic/humourous/sarcastic view on life.
3. Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy - The Refreshments
Roger Clyne is king.
2. Black Love - Afghan Whigs
The Whigs are one of rocks most underrated and under-recognized bands. Greg Dulli's music is black and twisted soul. Beautiful and wicked and evil and wrenching songs about Dulli and his demons.
1. Come on Pilgrim / Surfer Rosa [original double cd release] - The Pixies
The greatest album by the greatest band ever. EVER.
just off the list:
I was saying to kaf recently that doing a cd swap with him or jpoulos is like making a cd for yourself. your list proves it j.

I know that these lists are pretty fluid. I was just thinking that if you ask me in two years what my top ten was, there's a strong chance that Hem's Rabbit Songs would have snuck in there.
Posted by: eyeballkid at August 14, 2002 09:46 PMUm.
West Side Story-Original Soundtrack ("Hey, Officer Krupke, krup you!")
Sergei Prokofiev-Romeo and Juliet
Al Green-Greatest Hits
Pixies-Surfer Rosa
Billie Holiday-The Complete Billie Holiday on Verve (If I had to pick one disk off of it, Disk 7)
Peter Gabriel-Passion
David Bowie-Hunky Dory
Nick Drake-Pink Moon
Buena Vista Social Club
And ma husband's old band, Grotus-Slow Motion Apocalypse
Can't I just take my iPod?

Posted by: adampsyche at August 14, 2002 10:23 PMI thought about paring down this list, but sue me:
Johnny Cash - Live at Folsom and San Quentin (The gretest live album ever recorded)
Velvet Underground - 3rd Album (Pale Blue Eyes. Enough said)
This Mortal Coil - It'll End in Tears (As soon as it ends, I need almost pathologically to hear it again)
Einstuerzende Neubauten - Strategies Against Architecture II (Haus Der Luge, Yu-Gung, the Jordache commercial, Sand...everything you need)
Leonard Cohen - Songs (Suzanne, Sisters of Mercy... Cohen's broken voice like something dying)
Tindersticks - 1st Self-Titled (Find this album. It's the red one with the flamenco dancer on the cover.)
Sparklehorse - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot (So nice and tender and sad)
John Cale - Fragments of a Rainy Season (Cohen's Hallelujah, Fear Is a Man's Best Friend, bits of Songs for Drella...all live)
Wings of Desire Soundtrack (this is cheating because I get Nick Cave's The Carny, From Her to Eternity, and Crime The City Solution's Six Bells Chime on the same disc)
Dead Can Dance - Toward The Within (Almost too moving. Surprising too at times with American Dreaming and Don't Fade Away)
The Pogues - If I should Fall from Grace With God (The quintissential Pogues for me, though the first two are close. Brings back seeing this tour live every time)
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (If only for Desolation Row)
Cowboy Junkies - Trinity Sessions (her voice on Sweet Jane)
Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands (good memories. It makes me want to drive into a summer sunset)
Mojave 3 - Excuses for Travelers (Cool and nostalgic)
Pixies - Come On Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa (Matt calls 'em as he sees 'em)
Rolling Stones - The London Years (3 disc set, maybe 2 plonkers in the bunch)
Swans - Omniscience (Overpowering)
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One (Just great)
Tom Waits - Small Change (Bad Liver and a Broken Heart to Pasties and a G-String...ahhh)
Underworld - Everything, Everything (A man's got to dance on a desert island too)
Roger Waters - Amused to Death (monkey content. And it makes ya think)
Peter Case - The Man with the Blue, Postmodern, Fragmented, Neotraditionalist Guitar (This is now out of print, but probably one of top three albums I can name. btw, he was the Plimsouls singer)
hmmm
1.Verve Jazz classics: best of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fizgerald
2. Best of Velvet Underground
3. Ned's Atomic Dustbin - God Fodder
4. Echo & The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
5. Fugazi - 13 Songs
6. Radiohead - OK Computer
7. Radiohead - Kid A
8. Love & Rockets - Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven
9. Replacements - All for Nothing/Nothing For All
10. Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
I had a big boat, OK?
Posted by: kafkaesque at August 14, 2002 10:26 PMI Can Hear the Heart Beating as one is my #11.
I *heart* "Autumn Sweater."
Posted by: brittney at August 14, 2002 10:26 PMI cheated by using a lot of best ofs...
Posted by: tj at August 14, 2002 10:28 PMKAF!
Peter FUCKING Case! Sings Like Hell is one of my all-time favorites.
There was a time when I wanted to be buried with a Crime and the City Solution CD in my hands. Yeah, it was a pretty shitty time. :-)
And I couldn't decide between Rain Dogs and Small Change. Small Change was the first Waits album I ever heard. You can actually get cirrhosis of the liver just by listening to that album.
Posted by: jpoulos at August 14, 2002 10:34 PMI love that Peter Case record. Two Angels, Entella Hotel, Poor Old Tom (poor old tom, he don't know, why his teeth gotta rattle, shiver and shake. at night tom's free to do whatever he pleases, tom's free to walk til the cold day breaks....). That's one that comes out to play once or twice a year. I didn't realize that it was out of print.
Also, Psychocandy by the Jesus and Mary Chain. is a near perfect work.
Posted by: eyeballkid at August 14, 2002 10:36 PMTJ: For two years in college, I was awakened every Sunday morning with Stone Roses' "I Wanna Be Adored". I love that album.

King Yellowman- Yellowman (because Iggy Pop says so too)
Back Home Again- John Denver
Live At The Roxy- Social Distortion
Songs the Lord Taught Us- The Cramps
Big Lizard In My Backyard- The Dead Milkmen
Asha Bolse's Greatest Hits- Asha Bolse (Amazon doesn't carry)

*Any James Brown
Oh, and there's so much more...
Posted by: Aw at August 14, 2002 10:37 PMShit. You guys are reminding me of all these other awesome albums. I think my desert island is going to have to be near your desert islands so we can make rafts and trade.

Posted by: jpoulos at August 14, 2002 10:43 PMOh and Brittney, you're the Twin Peaks Freak, right? On Tindersticks' "Curtains" album, the singer does a duet with Isabella Rosselini on "Marriage Made In Heaven".
Ask for it by name.
Posted by: kafkaesque at August 14, 2002 10:44 PMThis was an easy assignment.
1. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
2. The Beatles - Abbey Road
3. Big Audio Dynamite - This is Big Audio Dynamite
4. The Story of the Clash (cheating with a greatest hits collection, and a double CD to boot)
5. Prince - 1999
6. The Proclaimers - Sunshine on Leith
7. R.E.M. - Eponymous (also cheating)
8. If I Was: The Very Best of Midge Ure and Ultravox (ditto)
9. Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
10. The Who - Quadrophenia
The unasked question - do we get a CD player on this desert island, or do we all have a nice set of silver drink coasters?
Posted by: yhbc at August 14, 2002 10:47 PMAnd Lupo & Eyeball, I emailed Peter Case at vanguardrecords.com, asking him about that disc. Apparently there's some bad mojo with Geffen. He answers his email personally by the way, which is ultra cool.
I mentioned a show I had seen of his in San Jose in 90 or so, when he was quitting smoking and yelling at the sound guy. He laughed about it, and Hemingway punched me in the mouth.
btw, his last disc, Flying Saucer Blues is grrreat. The first one of you that asks can have a gratis copy, too. I had a copy and a pal of mine got me a new signed one.
Posted by: kafkaesque at August 14, 2002 10:48 PMYHBC.....you're...you're....a fellow Ultravox fan??
I have the rarest Ultravox collectible in history. Worship me!
Posted by: kafkaesque at August 14, 2002 10:49 PMKaf, Ultravox (as well as Midge solo) is one of those bands that I didn't know I liked until the missus brought home the aforementioned CD and I realized I not only knew almost every song on it, but that I liked them all. Hence its inclusion on my list. Make fun of "Vienna" all anyone wants, it's still a beautiful song that I don't think I'll ever get tired of. There's also a lot more songs that most folks either forgot about, or didn't realize who they were by.
And, I'll bite. What's your worship-inducing collectible?
Posted by: yhbc at August 14, 2002 11:01 PMman, readymade and I appear to be the only classical/musical theatre queens here... I almost said "West Side Story", rmd, but I just love the energy and purity of Julie Andrews at her peak, and it's worth the price of admission just hearing Rex Harrison trying to croon.
And Marquis, I also love Are You Feeling Sinister, but Tigermilk has sentimental associations for me, so it won out :)
(BTW, where's jonmc? I thought he'd be on this thread like white on rice)
Posted by: scribblative at August 14, 2002 11:10 PMWhat? No one has any XTC?
Kafka, I'm buying you another beer for including the Man in Black on the same list as Underworld. I shot a man in Reno, just to see him shake that booty...
1. XTC - Skylarking
2. American Music Club - Mercury ('cause it's gonna be depressing on that island every now and then)
3. Robyn Hitchcock - Eye
4. Dave Brubeck - Time Out
5. Nobuo Uematsu and Marie Braetnach - Celtic Moon
6. Tom Waits - Nighthawks at the Diner
7. Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman
8. Miles Davis - 'Round Midnight
9. Rollins - Human Butt (just for the Sky King story)
10. Lyle Lovett - Joshua Judges Ruth
God, I love this game...

5. My Fair Lady (original London recording)
6. The Otis Redding Story (it's a box set)
7. Carl Orff-Carmina Burana
8. Janet Jackson-The Velvet Rope
9. Woody Allen-Standup Comic
10. A second copy of My Fair Lady in case the first one gets scratched.
Oh, and Jimmy Buffet's "Songs You Know By Heart". It's an island, for fuck's sake.

Posted by: RakDaddy at August 14, 2002 11:19 PMOff the top of my head, and in no particular order:
Spirit "The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus"
Big Star "No. 1 Record/Radio City"
Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"
Rolling Stones "Let It Bleed"
Liz Phair "Exile in Guyville" (Yeah, me too.)
Elvis Costello "Imperial Bedroom"
Big Dipper "Heavens" (Never released on CD, which is criminal)
XTC "Black Sea" (Oooh, thanks for the reminder, RakDaddy)
Cheap Trick "Heaven Tonight"
X "Wild Gift"
I reserve the right to change my mind tomorrow. And yes, I am older than dirt, thank you for asking. I remember when dirt first became available; my friends and I laughed. We thought it would never be accepted. Man, if we'd gotten in on the ground floor of that dirt thing we'd be rich, I tells ya, rich!

5. Sting-Hits from the 80's (I think that's what it's called)
6. Aretha Franklin-Greatest Hits
(I'm lame, but I love "greatest hits")
7. Sarah McLachlan-Surfacing
8. Love Song Mix from ColdChef (I love him so)
9. U2- The Joshua Tree
10. Journey-Greatest Hits
Actually, the collectible is...wait for it...
The original pressing of Vienna, with the title "TorquePoint" and the same songs in different order. My sister was living in England and had some tenuous connection to Steve Lillywhite's wife or something. So she sent it as a bday present.
I've felt out the Extreme Voice fanclub for worth...last go round they offered one hundred pounds.
Posted by: kafkaesque at August 14, 2002 11:23 PMKafkaesque, I don't remember if I included any Cat Power in my mix, but you definitely need to give her a listen, if you haven't already. I think you'd dig.

Posted by: readymade at August 14, 2002 11:30 PMI saw Rod Stewart in concert, as well as the Police (that's the band that Sting was in first, remember?) I also like Prince (see above), Aretha Franklin and James Taylor are both sui generis, but Journey?
Wheel in the sky, keep on turnin'....
Don't know if I have an original thought ....
Oh well, we all have guilty pleasures.
If kevinskomsvold ever shows up, I understand we're likely to have a double helping of Foreigner on his playlist, so you never know.
I question the taste in men, too, though (unless that's just another guilty pleasure).
Posted by: yhbc at August 14, 2002 11:31 PMFor RakDaddy and readymade:
I lay all my problems
at Johnny Mathis' feet
I said Johnny, Johnny tell me,
can you tell me how to live
All my hopes are unravelling
And I just lost my lease
For my house without love
Doors, windows, without peace
With a wave his jewel-encrusted hand
Across a glittering Las Vegas scene
He said, "you've gotta learn how to disappear
In the silk and amphetamines..."
Johnny looked at my songs
And he said at first guess
"Never in my life have I seen
such a mess
Why do you say everything
As if you were a thief
Like what you stole has no value
Like what you preach is far from belief?"
With a wave of his wide blue hand
'Cross a glittering Shepherd's Bush scene
He said, "you've gotta learn how to disappear
In the silk and amphetamines..."
Johnny looked at my collection
Of old punk rock posters
Anonymous scenes of disaffection, chaos, torture...
And he said, "well, you were on the right track
But you're a lamb jumping for the knife
A true showman knows how to disappear
In the spotlight,
In the spotlight,
In the spotlight,
In the spotlight,
In the spotlight".

Posted by: readymade at August 14, 2002 11:36 PMWell, I know what I'm going to listen to when I get home tonight, good mood or no:
Lazarus wasn't grateful for his second wind
For another chance
Watch his chances fade like the dawn and leave
I can barely tell you just how pale I get
Without you
I've been a mess since you've been gone
What were the first words that crowd heard him speak
I bet he was cursing at the sky
I bet he wasn't turning no other cheek
And was there still hope and desire left in his heart
For the last word in love
I've been a mess since you've been gone
Your beauty is just a slap in the face
That's gonna bring me back to life
Back to another sky that's blue
It's gonna turn me into another great American zombie
So hungry for you
I've been a mess since you've been gone

Speaking of Lyrics:
A Rainy Night in Soho
By Shane MacGowan (1991)
I've been loving you a long time
Down all the years, down all the days
And I've cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways
We watched our friends grow up together
And we saw them as they fell
Some of them fell into Heaven
Some of them fell into Hell
I took shelter from a shower
And I stepped into your arms
On a rainy night in Soho
The wind was whistling all its charms
I sang you all my sorrows
You told me all your joys
Whatever happened to that old song
To all those little girls and boys
Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
But there's a light I hold before me
And you're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams
Sometimes I wake up in the morning
The gingerlady by my bed
Covered in a cloak of silence
I hear you in my head
I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the fist time
I never think about the last
Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
You're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

Posted by: ColdChef at August 14, 2002 11:53 PMOh, and should I go insane on this island, I'll trade all my discs for some Wesley Willis cds to see if they make more sense.
Posted by: ColdChef at August 14, 2002 11:56 PMI have a signed copy of Wesley Willis in my collection. Very confusing, very hazy night in The Empty Bottle in Chicago, and I walked away with PURE WESLEY GOLD!
Posted by: readymade at August 14, 2002 11:58 PMOh, and ColdChef, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who would bring a comedy CD... I don't have any Woody Allen, but I would probably try and smuggle in some Lenny Bruce in addition to my Izzards...
Posted by: scribblative at August 14, 2002 11:59 PMOK, after much thought and pangs of betrayal, here are my ten, no cheating, no compilations, no boxed-sets (what agony!). I chose the ten records I couldn't live without, rather than those I think are the best or those I most enjoy listening to.
Leonard Cohen - Recent Songs
Morrissey - Viva Hate
Frank Sinatra - At The Sands
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Primal Scream - Xterminator
Mary Margaret O'Hara - Miss America
Echo and the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
Joni Mitchell - Hejira
Astor Piazolla - Sur
Amália Rodrigues - Com Que Voz
If allowed the Lupo Extra Five Dispensation, I'd also have:
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and The Lash
The Velvet Underground and Nico
Radiohead - The Bends
Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come
Ella Fitzgerald - Live In Rome( but only because the Duke Ellington Songbook has 3 discs)
I would be very, very miserable though!
That said, I'd love to live on many of the islands so far, except Commish's and Crash's... ;)

Posted by: eyeballkid at August 15, 2002 12:02 AMIf you're gonna bring up Wesley, we need to dish some lyrics:
Superman thought he was bad
He was messing with my girlfriend
I caught him in my room kissing her
I took a rubber hose and flogged his rump
I whipped Superman's ass
I whipped Superman's ass
I whipped Superman's ass
I whipped Superman's ass
Rock over London
Rock on Chicago
I saw Wesley Willis here at the palace in LA once. Opened for Sublime, I think. He was fun to watch, but I've never been able to get into him on cd.

Posted by: yhbc at August 15, 2002 12:12 AMLyrics from my top ten-er:
If you don't mind why don't you mind
Where is your sense of indignation
You are too kind Much too kind
Where is the madness that you promised me
Where is the dream for which I paid dearly
When things go wrong I sing along
It is the nature of the business
But you're not here
to make my sad songs more sincere
No one will ever love you honestly
No one will ever love you
for your honesty
No one will ever love you honestly
No one will ever
love you for your honesty

Young Loud & Snotty - Dead Boys

(And it's not the particular albums, it's the vibe. You have taste, my friend, unlike these Wesley Willis liking folks.)
Wesley Willis is actually on the list of artists you would have to pay me to see. I believe the price I quoted my girlfriend was $8. For $8 (including ticket), I'd go to a Wesley Willis concert and pay (some) attention. $5? Nope. $7? Nuh-uh. Give me $8 and a comp, and i'm there - but no less.
He's quirky, sure. And briefly - very briefly - funny. But, I'm sorry, he's also positively atrocious. And this coming from someone who enjoys the entire Gary Davis record.
Posted by: Marquis at August 15, 2002 12:51 AMYhbc, I was allowed only 10 choices. But say for instance, a stiff wind came along and blew one of my CDs away, and then good ol' Apostrophe' floated by my island. Well I'd welcome it with open arms.

That's been part of our worship team repetoire for a long time. Doesn't show off our lead guitarist as much as a lot of the others though.
The cd I have been listening to constantly is a live performance cd recorded in Northern Ireland. Nontraditional worship stuff done in the Celtic sound. It would have to come with me to the desert island for sure.
Too bad I can't mail you each a Ramsie Shick cd. That gal gives Janice Joplin a real run for her money...about as nontraditional as you can get.Let's just say I doubt HER stuff would be sung in church-altho I wouldn't object if it was!

On reflection, it's not a very esoteric list. I have a lot of less popular music, but my enjoyment of those CDs tends to burn hot and cold. These 10 11 are probably the most reliable in my collection.
btw, Summer, I love your choice of the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack. Easily the best Andrew Lloyd Webber soundtrack -- and the movie soundtrack is far better than the cast recording (imho)
Posted by: pardon me at August 15, 2002 10:02 AMPardon me - I have the video. I watch it every Easter to celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord. I think I'd be a Christian if Jesus had a rock opera voice and looked like Ted Neeley.
Posted by: Summer at August 15, 2002 10:10 AMThese cd lists make me feel so OLD. The vast majority of them I have never even heard of...
My son prefers classical, when he even bothers to listen to music, and the girls are into christian contemporary, which-with the exception being Delirious-I haven't usually heard of either.
If any of you are from Great Britain, perhaps you can clear up something-it's my understanding that Delirious plays or has played in bars- in other words, out where folks actually listen to good bands. Anybody out there ever heard of them?

Posted by: b****fire at August 15, 2002 10:15 AMThis thread makes me cry. Many, many moons ago I left my 250+ CD collection at my sister's house when I left to backpack around Europe. Her f*ckwit of a (now ex) boyfriend sold them all and bought some coke.
I am slowly rebuilding my collection. Extremely slowly. CDs here cost a mint. Which is why God invented CD burners and WinMX *grins*
jpoulos, if you like Ani DiFranco, Living In Clip is the best of all worlds, followed closely by her new release(s) Revelling and Reckoning, IMO. And I am surprised by how much touring that girl does on this continent. 3 shows in the past 2 years.

This will make you laugh ... about, oh, 5 years ago a touring show of JCS came to Detroit starring ... Ted Neely and Carl Anderson. It was really cool. Ted's voice was a little shaky, but Carl's was still smooth as silk. The most humerous part was when Ted was lifted up on the cross at the end ... he'd put on a few pounds since the 1970s, and didn't exactly fit the "emaciated Jesus" look. I don't know what it is ... JCS has that kind of kitch/hippie/art vibe that is pretty unique. And I'm not a Christian either. Hey, b****, how come this one wasn't on your list?

in no particular order:
Exile on Main Street-Rolling Stones: meant as a chronicle of end of the '60s exhaustion but it really can apply to anyone anywhere feeling worn down and beaten. And no record expresses that better
Born to Run-Bruce Springsteen: The opposite end of the spectrum. This man could find the hope in anything, and "Jungleland" may be the best "epic" rock song ever, just for the sax solo.
Let It Be-Replacements: Talk about your vocies crying out in the wilderness. This album let a very confused 15 year old know he was not alone.
Who's Next-The Who: The Best Drummer, the best songwriter all at the top of their game.
Midnight Roads and Stages Seen-Jason and the Scorchers: Double Live album of one of the most criminally underrated bands of all time.
Master of puppets-Metallica: Best. Metal. Album. Ever.
Beg Scream and Shout and Loud Fast and Out of Control: Two amazing box sets covering '60's R&B and 50's Rock(two eras near and dear to my heart)Expertly picked by fans not bean counters, you can tell.
The Band-The Band: the tightest and pound for pound the most musically talented rock band ever. A record you can never completely get to the bottom of.
Rubber Soul-the Beatles: post-yeah,yeah,yeah and pre-acidhead tomfoolery. plus "I'm Looking through You" and "In My Life" are my two fave Fab 4 tunes.
Pet Sounds-Beach Boys: Nobody does male vulnerability like Brian Wilson.
Rocket to Russia-Ramones: Rock and Roll distilled to it's absolute pure essence.
Live 1966-Bob Dylan: Rock and Roll as combat, plus the Band are in fine form backing him up.
Answer the Phone, Dummy-Fast backs:Best pop/punk album ever because it scarifices the purity of neither side of the equation.
24 Hours a Day-Bottle Rockets: the great lost album of the ninties. Smart economical roots rock played from the gut.
There you have it: the master hath spoken.

Posted by: tizzie at August 15, 2002 01:51 PMMr Jones, do you honestly prefer Fevers and Mirrors to Letting off the Happiness? Wow. I find the former so much more truthful and fresh - F&M is a little precious.
Conor's playing in Montreal in September. Hooray!
Oh - and if you haven't heard it yet, I found the upcoming album (Lifted) to be rather the disappointment. Certainly no new ground covered - it made me especially frustrated as the recent EP had me so excited.
Posted by: Marquis at August 15, 2002 01:54 PMPink Floyd's The Wall hits a wee bit too close to home. But i agree it rocks...
Anybody old enough to remember Renaissance with (I think) Annie Haslam?
Posted by: b****fire at August 15, 2002 01:57 PMAh, I forgot to put Monk on my list. I have a nice comp called Genius of Modern Music which would be a nice addition.
Posted by: kafkaesque at August 15, 2002 01:58 PMAgree with vacapinta, a thread too good not to delurk.
I've seen most of my list included in others'; forgive the repetition, for this is something I must get out. A sentimental romp thru the Canyons of My Mind.
Double Nickels, The Minutemen. (Though I like What Makes a Man Start Fires more, Double Nickels is longer, thus better suited for exile.)
Wanted!, The Outlaws. Waylon, Willie, Jessie, Tompaul. One of the best records ever made, IMHO-- the 20th anniversary edition has lots of new tracks, too, making it very, very long. This record was my childhood. Well, that and...
...Equal Rights, Peter Tosh. Envision an 8-y-o toehead intoning, "I'm a stepping razor, don't you watch my size, I'm dangerous." I listen to this record at work when I'm secretly fighting the downpressor man.
Any Buddy Holly collection.
George Best, Wedding Present. Just the best collection ever of poppy, adolescent longing (though if you'd asked me 10 years ago, I would've said Sebadoh's III, another lengthy album, but no longer).
toss-up between Can I Say and Wig Out at Denko's, Dag Nasty. Can I Say was my first-ever punk album, I think. Though it might have been...
...The Clash. Not the British version, though, 'cause I like Clash City Rockers too much.
The Early Year, Scud Mt. Boys. Actually a compilation of their first 2 albums, so this is a cheater. Creepy country plus a straightfaced cover of Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.
In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up, Ministry. I haven't heard this album in 10 years, but it was so freaking good when I was a teenager, especially the time I was listening to Stigmata in my friend Julie's car and we came up over a hill and almost bought the farm head-on stylee with a NYSEG cherry-picker truck.
69 Love Songs, Magnetic Fields. Again, a cheater, but in my mind one of the most perfect concept albums ever (with the exception of 1/3 of the 3rd disk--what up with that?).
Runners up:
City Jump vs. Country Jump, various artists. This is actually an illegal bootleg which isn't widely distributed but is indeed the best collection of jump blues classics. (I got mine at Wowsville Records.)
Fear of Music, Talking Heads.
Doc Watson and Son.
Anthology of American Folk Music.
*Whew.*

Posted by: ColdChef at August 15, 2002 02:04 PMyeah, Marquis, Fevers and Mirrors just hit me at the exact right time. One of two albums (along with SDRE's Diary)that'll I'll be teary eyed after two songs. Letting Off the Happiness is probably an all-around better album, but I don't have that emotional attachment to it like F&M. And they're playing dallas in October. Haven't heard all of the new one, i'll probably go ahead and buy it before the show, just so i'll know the songs, but what i've heard of it, and what most everyone has said, follows your opinion of it.

Posted by: adampsyche at August 15, 2002 02:23 PMGeorge Best, Wedding Present
OMG I used to love that. I saw the Wedding Present at the Cambridge Corn Exchange about half a century ago. I was in the front row being crushed to death by moshers so the lead singer (I forget his name) gave me his plastic glass of water. I kept that for years. He was on the radio the other day. He has another band but I can't remember what they're called.
Posted by: Summer at August 15, 2002 02:30 PMhey adam -- did SY play any songs off of Dirty when you saw them? I saw 'em in Austin, and not a single one. Pretty much the only old song they played was "Silver Rocket". Just curious

Ufez: They did not, until the encore. Karen and I stayed to see if it was a song I wanted to hear, and it wasn't, so we started to leave, and it wasn't until we were damn near close to Central Park West that we heard them playing Drunken Butterfly in the background...one of my favorite songs. Why couldn't they have told me they were going to do a multiple song encore? Bastards...I wanted to hear Orange Rolls, Angels Spit...they did play Kool Thing, though...

Posted by: Unclefes at August 15, 2002 02:49 PMSongs:Ohia is some of the most whinsome, sad and empassioned music ever recorded. It has more energy than Palace - though it's a similar mix of guitar and noise - and the melancholia positively burns.

Escape (The Pina Colada Song)
Rupert Holmes
I was tired of my lady
We'd been together too long
Like a worn-out recording
Of a favorite song
So while she lay there sleeping
I read the paper in bed
And in the personal columns
There was this letter I read
"If you like Pina Coladas
And getting caught in the rain
If you're not into yoga
If you have half a brain
If you'd like making love at midnight
In the dunes on the Cape
Then I'm the love that you've looked for
Write to me and escape."
I didn't think about my lady
I know that sounds kind of mean
But me and my old lady
Have fallen into the same old dull routine
So I wrote to the paper
Took out a personal ad
And though I'm nobody's poet
I thought it wasn't half bad
"Yes I like Pina Coladas
And getting caught in the rain
I'm not much into health food
I am into champagne
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon
And cut through all this red-tape
At a bar called O'Malley's
Where we'll plan our escape."
So I waited with high hopes
And she walked in the place
I knew her smile in an instant
I knew the curve of her face
It was my own lovely lady
And she said, "Oh it's you."
Then we laughed for a moment
And I said, "I never knew."
That you like Pina Coladas
Getting caught in the rain
And the feel of the ocean
And the taste of champagne
If you'd like making love at midnight
In the dunes of the Cape
You're the lady I've looked for
Come with me and escape
Anymore of that and I swear I'll post the lyrics to Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch", and then you'll all be sörry. Sorry, "sorry".

Posted by: b****fire at August 15, 2002 10:58 PMI'm assuming you mean Scott Ian, rhythm guitarist and songwriter, goneill. Scary as it may seem to some, me and my crew considered him the shit back in my high school days. Some of his stuff still kicks ass now. You gotta love a headbanger with the balls to do a duet with Chuck D on PE's "Bring the Noise", right?
Posted by: jonmc at August 16, 2002 12:47 AMyeah - i mean i'm down with chuck d. I just have seen the behind the musics with him, and could only cast the judgement that I casted. But, I considered Olivia Newton John's Greatest Hits Volume 2 to be the inspiration that I would need to become a famous roller skater - so I would understand you and your hessian friends to be somewhere approximating normal.
Posted by: goneill at August 16, 2002 10:27 AMOh, whatever with Scott Ian. Anthrax tried to copyright "NYHC." As if Anthrax ever was NYHC. That, and his preference for goofy facial hair, completely overrides any potential for coolness he or the band ever had.
To quote Leeway (who I also dislike, but hold in relative high esteem in comparison to Anthrax), snitches get stitches. Ian, stay away from Greenpoint, yo.

It was creepy and wierd, and we must try to forget it. Whatever happened in bars was tangential. The hipsters were all standing under the crucifix in the church basement.
